Champion Matchups

Introduction

Oh hai there.Been a long time since i updated my guide(since the Garen remake some months ago actually),and since season 3 has really started i decided to remake it.
As his name implies Garen is the strongest champion from Demacia.He is a pretty masculine guy and wears a fuckin scarf!How badass is dat mang?Well put aside his looks he is one of the stronkest solo top champions in the game,yet he is kinda looked down and underrated by most of the LoL players.I mean what else can you ask?High mobility,silence,stronk early/mid game and decent late game,tanky,executioner AND A FUCKIN SCARF.
So what are we waiting for lets go out on the fields of justice and own some little fuckabishes with Garen,The Might of Demacia.

Masteries

I decided to change my masteries build to 9-21-0 (http://www.finalesfunkeln.com/s3/#73Uq7nMa6xATvd) emphasizing on extra health,CC reduction and resistance from champion autoattacks since 80% toplaners are physicall damage bruisers(swap MR with Armor depending on the matchup btw).On the offensive tree we just get some extra cooldown,the improvement on ignite cuz it is good early and its a nice boost to our already stronk early game and some armor pen%.Since my item build is emphasized to do more damage since Garen is an offtank i find the extra defensive stats really helpfull since they also help our lategame.This really depends on the guy playing so feel free to use your own masteries for him.For example other masteries i should use on him are:
21-9-0 balls deep for mid Garen(really stronk vs melee casters like Pantheon,Talon,Diana etc...)
or maybe 14-16-0/14-15-1 or generally whatever you feel suits your playstyle better.

Runes

My new rune setup as opposed to the old one(Armor pen reds and Quints,Armor seals and flat MR glyphs) is quite similar since i changed only the reds and Quints with flat Attack Damage.The reason i do that is since in season 3 the armor penetration i am gonna build is close to the cap(League of Cleavers :3) i really think that the flat armor pen is not gonna make much difference especially since riot decided to nerf it: and will make any champion cry from the armor shred so it's more than enough(supposing the enemy team is stacking armor).
The armor and MR are pretty self explanatory.The reason i use flat on both and not scaling is that they are more usefull on Garen early on since his scales great Lategame since they changed it to increase the % of your defensive stats.

Top lane match-ups

:Akali is a generally a good matchup for Garen.If you can silence her before she uses her Twillight Shroud you will push her out of lane pretty fast,even kill her very easily.If you can't silence her before she uses Twillight Shroud she will only mitigate some of the damage with the bonus armor and MR her W provides but still you will outtrade her hard.After 6 just be carefull of the enemy jungler but I'm pretty sure she cant kill you unless you get 3man ganked.
Difficulty:3/10. Do regular build.

:Cho'gath's damage early on isn't high and his survavability only depends on his lasthitting.He can't trade with you even with his minions and the only thing he can do is sustain from creeps.Our job is to deny him from farming and abuse our early game advantage over him all the time.If for whatever reasons we didnt dominate him early game and the lane is pretty even try to roam on drake fights or push him out of lane and get turret with your jungler.
Difficulty:3/10. Do regular build.

:This is a VERY tricky lane.GP can always keep a distance from bruiser tops like Garen with his Q and has a very good farming ability with it.You should try and zone him from farm and trade with him whenever you get the chance cuz he will lose all trades with Garen at all staged of the game.Thing is, if he maxes Q or E to kite you and be able to trade with you Garen will outsustain him pretty much and if he maxes W for more sustain he cant trade at all so he will lose the lane either way.
Difficulty:5/10 rush a [imgext=] if ahead or a couple / if for whatever reason you fall behind early levels.

:Gragas cant do very much against you because once you silence him he will only QQ and do nothing.His Q cant negate you early because all of your dmg comes from your spells.Easy lane for us,just be aware of him after level 6 because a gank with his ulti can wreck you.You win in sustain and damage always but you wont really see a top gragas than often.Only thing he can do is not die after 6 so just farm your lane and push his turrets/roam after 1st turret is down.
Difficulty:Difficulty:3/10. Do regular build.

:Another tricky lane for Garen.Irelia has good sustain even after the nerf and can pretty much counter ANY of your burst attempts with her annoying Equillibrium strike.You have to play this matchup smartly and avoid gettin stunned.After you combo her retreat to your minions or brushes or turret and she wont have the time to trade back with you.If she manages to stun before you silence tho her damage will hurt alot so be extra carefull.
Difficulty:7/10.Start with then rush.

:Thing is am a little sad whenever i confront this champion on toplane because he is a demacian bro.Oh ,well.A good jarvan with either keep some distance from you with his combo and harass you whenever he can or simply try to trade with you with his combo and his E passive.If he keeps his distance just farm safely and wait for him to make a wrong move,then use your combo on him.If he tries to trade you win in terms of damage unless he is running some crazy armor runepage or something.Only way to outsustain you is to poke you with flag whenever your passive kicks in so be carefull with that.A lane that is not hard neither easy for us but you cant kill J4 easily.
Difficulty:6/10 since we cant kill him.Do regular build.

:Another very tricky lane.If he can activate his dodge before you silence him he will mitigate some of our damage because his dodge reduces the dmg he takes from AoE abilities.generally speaking he can harass you with E then jump to his own minion for safety.If he goes in an all out trade you win even after level 6.Be carefull for early ganks with his jungler and you should be ok.
Difficulty:6/10.Start ,rush .

:Garen really struggles with high mobility champions at toplane.After the nerfs to Lee's Safeguard/Iron Will skill tho he lost some of his early power in lane.The thing is he won't try to trade with you since he can't kill you so he will try to farm from a distance with his spells.Try to deny his farm and he tries to come near you unload your combo on him.Lee can kill you early with help from his jungler so try to keep off cooldown as much as possible.
He cant kill you,you can maybe get a kill or two in the laning phase.Difficulty:6/10.Deny him early and do regular armor based build.

:Malph has a really hard time with casters and Garen can punish him for that.Only drawback for Garen in this matchup is that malphite scales with armor items so he will become unkillable after some point and unable to push out of the lane.Also his teamfight is alot better than your's so try to avoid pickin Garen vs Malphite if possible.If he picks after you then you will most prolly win the lane by cleansing his slow or unleashing your burst on him whenever he tries to farm.But it is high likely that you lose the lategame most of the time,depending of the team compositions.
Difficulty:5/10 in lane 10/10 in teamfights.


:Mordekaiser es #1...NOT.One of my fav oponents as Garen.He will either use his E to farm or harass you so stay in the side of your minions.You can just walk up to him whenever he gets close to the creeps,and do your combo on him because he will be helpless against you.
Difficulty:3/10.Rush to help you snowball agains him,then regular build.

:Garen is a very good counterpick to Nasus.All he needs to do is farm him Q and Garen can very well prevent him from doing that early on,making him plain useless.Sometimes you might wanna rush a AND so you can laugh at his early attempts to coutner you with a or.Be carefull and try not to roam too much so he cant comeback with AFK farm on his Q.Just tell your jungler to never gank your lane and babysit other lanes.If nasus plays with TP just push his lane whenever he is away.When you get ganked save for his wither and you should be okay.
Difficulty:1/10

:Hmmm i think this is a very interesting matchup.A good olaf will keep distance from you but generally speaking every Olaf player will try to trade with you whenever he comes close to you.This is when we are gonna win the lane because our early game damage is much better than his.Since your only disable you got is your silence you can easily make short work of him after 6.
Difficulty:5/10.Get these item from left to right: and you pretty much won the lane.Also might be a good buy.

:I think Garen is one of the few counters to Mr. 300.Whenever he thinks hes safe with his passive(it can block your Q) close the distance to him and use the autoattack--> combo.Then hes at your mercy.Rush .
Difficulty:5/10 because the jungle gank hurts with Mr. 300.

:Hmmm two of the most fearsome top laners clash into an epic battle.Both champions have high harrass but its basically a race of your Q and his W.Renekton's harass is really quick while our harass is more sustained.Be carefull after he is lvl 6 because he can easily counter our with the extra hp he gets.
Difficulty 8/10

:Just like Garen is gonna struggle from her high mobility.BUT,Riven can only harass you in MELEE range so you can punish her for that.You win in an all in fight so try to be aggresive and deny her early game.Take advantage of the fact she cant sustain like you can and win the lane.
Difficulty 5/10 because you cant kill her,basically.

:This is one of the lanes that you either snowball or get snowballed hard.You can fuck up Rumble 1v1 easy.But if he gets camp by some gay Shaco and gets the 1st 3 kills on you without sweating he will snowball you hard.You can try and surprise him with your combo when he tries to harass you with his Flame shit then walk away from his Harpoons.Annoying lane tho.
Difficulty:7/10 rush early MR via

:Another one of those lanes that we cant kill but cant kill us.Maybe @ level 6 you can force a kill on him with combo and all of your spells.Be extra aware of jungle ganks.
Difficulty:5/10 PUNISH HIS ULTI'S BY SPLITPUSHING.

:Derp the usuall troll Singed.Just fuck him up before level 6 but you will have to rely on your farm because he will go where he pleases later on.
Difficulty:2/10 pre-6 8/10 after 6.

:I dont see many udyrs at toplane recently but he is generally a good champ to pick against Garen.He got high sustain with Turtle Stance and can effectively kite you with Bear stance.
Be carefull of him early on and try to get some strong teamfight items for lategame becaus he is useless late and you arent.
Difficulty:8/10

:Vlad is really weak early on and thats what you must take advantage of.After some certain level tho he will get really tanky so try to push him out of the lane,take the turret ASAP and try to gank other lanes and get objectives with your team.In teamfights prioritize him with your silence and fuck him up ASAP.
Difficulty:4/10 in lane 10/10 lategame.

:Another champion i try to avoid on toplane.His early harass is tremendous and he is way too much tanky to beat early.I wont analyze this matchup alot because very rarely do i see volibears on toplane nowadays.
Difficulty:9/10 start

:Garen beats WW early on just try to farm and zone him out while hes weak.Rush and maybe a then finish .When he uses his Q to sustain go all in and you will have no problem at all beating him.
Difficulty 4/10.

:Pretty simple matchup in the top lane.Wukong is a very tricky sneaky champion so to ensure lane dominance you need to kill him 1st.To achieve that try to harass him before he hits levels 3-4,then make him waste his W and all you have to do is to all-in him with QE combo because his illusion has a very long cooldown.After that he is at your mercy.If you lose trades which is high possible due to Wukong's %armor shred on Q just try to sustain safely with your ,because one of many wukong's drawbacks is the lack of built-in sustain.
Be extra carefull for ganks when he hits 6.
Difficulty:7/10 start + and rush

:Yorick is a very hard lane but weak versus AoE champs like Garen.Play EXTREMELY aggro early on before he starts stackin armor.If he does that just rush both and and you will be able to beat him in lane while doing some serious damage in teamfights.Try to stay near your brushes as much as possible because his ghouls won't follow you there.If yorick enters the brush,well punish him for that.
Difficulty:6/10 because he has a very tricky sustain mechanism that can match your

:This guy is really hard for us since he can trade very well with his bleed and prevent us from sustaining with .Damage-wise tho the trades will be on our side but the bleed is a very big problem.At level 6 he can force a kill on you the same way you can do it on him.A good way to win vs him is to try and bully him before he gets 6 and sustain when you can with because he won't be able to stop you early on.
Difficulty:8/10 .Start and rush ,then start working on .Same as consider to buy a against him.

Fiora is generally an easy matchup for Garen.You can easily bully her out of lane because she can only rely on her passive to sustain and to do that she has to all-in with you.Then her HP will be really low and she will be forced out of the lane.After she hits 6 stay close with your creeps and you can kill her.Try to kill her tho only when you got off cooldown.
Difficulty:5/10 .Do regular build.

: Same as nidalee there isn't much we can do against the little shiat.

Summoner Spells

is a pretty common AD bruiser setup.Flash allows you to make big playz or escapez and is generally the meta on top lane.Also Garen benefits from flash greatly because he has a small speed boost().Ignite is a personal fav on him because has a great synergy with his skills and lets you net those early kills and ensure domination on the lane.

Alternative options:
:This is a great sumoner spell on Garen as it allows you to catch up to enemies with and shut them down.Use this on AD carries mostly late game(for example exhaust and silence and watch him cry like a little biatch)

:havent really tried heal on him but i guess its good early game to bait dem kills in the lane.Pretty useless tho late game on a high HP bruiser.

:Well ghost is kinda overkill on garen as he will get kited like, ALOT.It is very good for chasing tower diving and escaping and synergizes well with his
but i still prefer (META too stronk)

: Always a good spell for the team but i recommend getting it in ranked 5's and not is soloQ.Also if you get teleport swap the last point in defense for the masterie point in utility.

:PLAIN OP I RECOMEND GETTING THIS SHIT EVERY GAME

Skills

Ok so let's review Garen's new abilities:
Generally considered one of the most effective passives to have on the laning phase because it kinda makes you an immovable object.Since riot made it work throughout minion damage it became harder to move him out of the lane,but it increased his cooldown on it by 2 seconds but it's still pretty sweet.

This is the spell we are gonna use as an anti-kiting ability and free cleanse now since riot removes the active from .Now it is alot stronger than it used to be on catching up to enemies to open up with heavy burst damage.

This spells lost some of its early game power to be more viable lategame.Upon receiving 100armor/100MR this spell will have its previous effectiveness so it will make lategame items like much more effective.The extra tenacity is also good for the times you are being in a tight spot and your is on cooldown.

This is what makes Garen so popular.Even tho this spell lost some of his early power it scales off better and still helps Garen dominate the lane.The sad thing is that it lost his utility so i had a few problems gettin used to using instead of to cleanse dem slowz.This spell now helps alot in AoE teams because it is very similar to Wukong's ultimate skill and makes armor penetration% on Garen so good in teamfights.

Garen's executioner skill :3, is really a trademark of his to ensure clutch kills in lane.Later in the game you want to save it for the most important threat on the enemy team.For example if you wanna just peel for your ADC(if your jungler is a ''zoner'' that can jump on AD carries like BRO or ) then you have to shred your target then ulti on him when he is low.On the other hand if you need to go after their carries just use it to one shot either the AP or AD carry( + :3).This skill also scales on THEIR hp and magic pen(duh) so you still have the option to go more tanky and have the ability to kill stuff with it.

Skill Order

You want to skill your first, then prioritize R>E>Q>W.
Maxing E ensures that you can trade well with the other toplaners( or midlaners in some cases) and bully them.
The reason I max Q over W second is because you need to deal as much damage as possible and W's passive doesn't scale with levels,so its more of a lategame skill as it gives you more tenacity on teamfights.
Get ulti whenever possible,duh.

ITEMS

For starting items you want to choose from these options:

Since season 3 Movement Speed changes i really dont feel the need to start boots 4pots,but it's your call.As for the other options start Dorans shield if you its a hard lane like olaf or irelia where you wanna dominate the other and want to have sustain and damage mitigation since you deal pretty good amounts of damage early on.Get sword 2pots if you want to go balls deep on your oponent when he cant harass you and you wanna deny him early from the lane( for example Nasus).If the enemy is someone with alot of sustain that can match yours and has high AD/AP damage get cloth 5pots/mantle 2pots.As for the boots 4pots option get them if you are against some kind of skillshot champion like Cho 'gath or something.
After that we need to transition to our early core.Normally using your passive you will have the money for and and a couple of . Then our early core will be something like this: (or boots level 2 of your choice) and .After the core is completed you need to continue your build with what seems most appropriate depending on the enemy team . For example against double AP compositions completing and will help you sustain through teamfights while dealing a nice amount of damage with your . If their team has 3-4 AD champs and a support then its good to get and because it will give you alot of CC in teamfights.Then you need to look at your team's condition.If you need more damage and the enemy doesnt stack alot of armor then is the way to go,otherwise buy a cheaper for a more teamfight oriented build.Otherwise if you get a more squishy damage dealing jungler like or then it's safer to build towards tankyness through OR depending on which you bought first.Always think what your team needs before making your next buy.For the last 2 slots i recommend going for 1 damage and 1 tanky item.

Good build versus heavy AD teams: (sell later) if the stack armor,if they dont buy if you are the ''tank'' or if you are the RAMBO.

Good build versus AP heavy teams: OR same as above and finally a (yes this item is better than since you don't autoattack that much) OR

Other items to consider: / .

Lvl 2 boots options: (now they give slow reduction) .

Lvl 3 upgrades to consider(depends on the game and the player): .

Item discussion

: The reason i consider this item a MUST on Garen every game is because after the changes to it you can stack it's passive with not only your autoattacks,but SPELLS aswell.This means that your Q or autoattack->Q will already make the opponents armor reduced before you start spinning.In teamfights you can stack 3(if I'm not mistaken) stacks on everyone with,supposing you hit them with your entire .Also this item provides Garen some health and armor penetration,thus it provides him nearly every stat he needs.

: After the change to his I find flat health to be really effective on him since Garen's resistances scale with it as the game progresses.Also the new passive on can add up to and make your sustain after a fight/trade tremendous.thus you will never wanna go back unless you are dead or really rich.

VS : Some months ago FM was an item that was never excluded from my build.Now with the changes to Garen i even managed to change my playstyle aswell because he became more of a tanky caster than a bruiser in all stages of the game.
So let's look at the stats these 2 items provide:

:500 flat HP ,70 armor AND these 2 amazing things:1) Unique Passive – Cold Steel: If you are hit by a basic attack, you slow the attacker's attack speed by 20% and their movement speed by 10% for 1.5 seconds(Anti-vayne/kog passive 2 stronk).
2)Unique Active: Slows the movement speed of nearby enemy units by 35% for 2 seconds + 1 second for every 100 armor and magic resistance you have. 60 second cooldown (500 Range).

: 700 flat HP ,30 attack damage and this passive: Unique – Icy: Your basic attacks slow your target's Movement Speed by 40% for 1.5 seconds (30% slow for ranged attacks).

The new Garen doesn't really benefit from it's passive(which is basically the main reason to buy a frozen mallet) so this is why i won't get this item over R.Omen(maybe replace Omen with Mallet against triple AP compositions). Sure it gives more flat HP and some attack damage ,but the damage mitigation you get from Omen and the AoE CC in teamfights suits more Garen's playstyle and generally fits more to his needs in the new metagame.I also forgot to mention Omen's passive slow duration increases 1 second for every 100 armor and magic resist you obtain and your really helps you with that.

[imgext=] : This item is a very good investment on Garen because every stat you get from it benefits him: 70 flat AD , and a 25% critical chance.
The AD is always nice to AD casters like Garen and the critical chance enhances our 's damage.If i am not mistaken (correct me on that if i am) the critical damage increase stacks on 's critical procs. Overall a really amazing item on him.

: Enemy team stacking armor?No Problem LW is a really cheap but STRONK item for AD casters that will be of great assistance to you when you think you don't to enough damage even with a .These 2 items combinde though will make you almost reach the cap of armor pen % on any target so your teamfight power will increase tremendously.Also it gives extra AD (duh!).

:This is an amazing item to get since it gives both Amor and MR and these 2 stats greatly synergize with your 's passive.Also it's passive is very usefull IF you have a good amount of damage and the enemy team is focusing you on teamfights for whatever reason.DON'T GET THIS ITEM IF YOU ARE BUILDING FOR FULL TANKY(which i don't recomend)SINCE THE ENEMY TEAM WILL IGNORE YOU(unless you run 1v5 and initiate for your team , then it's ok).

: Even after the nerfs this item that used to be a must on any bruiser 'till mid season 2 is really cost efficient on Garen.The stats it gives greatly benefit our survivability and damage output but i recoment buying it only under these circumstances:
1) Enemy team got a full AD composition (3-4 AD's and a support) and you stacked every other possible armor item.
2) If you play the role of a hard tank in your team and need some damage,this will slightly increase your damage output so you won't be useless.
3) Never get this item if you don't have AT LEAST AND SOME OTHER HP ITEM on your build,since it's passive's effectiveness will be wasted.

VS : As stated in the chapter above Maw loses it's effectiveness on Garen since you always open up with your combo and by the time you finish it and lost some hp for it's passive the only thing you will have off cooldown are your autoattacks.
On the contrary though Scimitar is a really effective item if your Q is on cooldown or if you are getting CC'ed to death via hard stuns and your W can't save you.Also it gives more MR than Maw does and more AD but its slightly more expensive so it's a really good trade-off.

Another great item on Garen.I used to think of spirit visage as an early game item which can be sold later but after the season 3 changes to it i gave it some thought and it's really cool to have even in lategame.Reasons for that is that it's magic resist value increases and its passive combined with and maybe a warmogs will make you go full hp after a big teamfight in NO TIME.Also it gives some more flat health AND cooldown reduction which is always great on no resource champions.

: Same as but against heavy AD locket will provide some really nice amounts of armor,flat hp and CDR and also great teamfight strenght for your team if combined for example with active.

: I used to never buy SC and still very rarely do i buy this item on him.The only circumstances i would get a SC is if the enemy team is stacking waaaay too much armor for BC and LW to effectively shred it so this item would give me some extra magic damage in teamfights.Other than that it's a great laning tool against champions like and since they both inflict true and physicall damage.

: A good flat AD damage that is very situational on Garen.Only games I consider to buy a BT is if i run and splitpush waves like crazy.Generally speaking even though gives 30 more than the later is way more usefull in teamfights while BT is better for splitpush.

: Always a good item on every hero but i recommend to get it only in ranked 5's rather than soloQ.

/ CORE ITEM YOU SPAM YOUR ABILITES GOOD MANA!!!


Now let's talk about good lvl 2 boots options:

Now a viable option for Garen since they provide a solid anti-kiting passive and extra MS compared to other lvl 2 boots.

: Garen is resourceless thus restricted only by cooldowns so these boots are nice on him,but they provide only some offense so give it some thought before you pick them.

: Good boots to rush against some AP lanes and always good to have in lategame since they provide some very valuable tenacity.If the enemy team has mostly slows rathen than hard cc then prefer but since Garen doesn't really benefit from the other tenacity items these boots are his way 2 go against hard CC.

: Is a good pair of boots to have against heavy AD teams and pretty good laning tool to RUSH against some champions.Remember to replace them with mercurys if the enemy team has too much CC lategame.

: Pretty solid enchantment for melee champions that need to stick to their targets but generally speaking quite useless in teamfight compositions.

: I always find the extra cooldown reduction on a HUGE thing since you need that spell to make playz and escape from or initiate in large teamfights.

: This is a good enchantment for when your base is getting really pushed and you must not waste a single second defending it.Sell later for distortion imo.




Early Game

After the remake Garen seems to have lost some of his tremendous early game power but he is still one of the stronkest bruisers in the League.Your goals are to deny your opponent,farm,get fed and generally try to win your lane so that you can help your team.Your early harass will include opening up with your Q to either reach your oponent or to refresh your autoattack so you can do some nice damage.Then spin to win.Generally speaking you should be to win your lane.

Mid Game

If you decided to help your team and left your lane for objectives then you should force them because you are begining to getting stonker and beefier.The new Garen dominates early/mid teamfights and if you can achieve that you can get your team pretty much ahead of the enemies.

Late Game

Since the remake Garen doesnt have many problems in lategame.As stated in the previous chapters you should always fill in the role that your team needs most (RAMBO ZONER,peeler/meatball for carry,etc...).

Well that concludes my 1st guide on TSM's site.

Garen is my very favourite champs from the whole league. The only problem i founded is...oh yeah he get like 80% champs that can counter him, and in ranked game, we never see a garen playing top cuz it is sucking way too hard...I'm really sad about this but it's the game. even if they has buff him, still underpowered champ :(

I honestly dont know how I feel about this guide. It seems like someone half-assed putting it together and generally, I dont follow half-assed guides :| Also.. so you know, crit strike chance increases the damage of Garen's Judgement. Keep that in mind

Just my quick opinion from playing the new garen a couple of times. It seems the build that was used before the recent patch is still viable. I just find myself switching around when i get items, just rushing certain items when i feel its needed. One thing is for sure though, Garen definitely has a better feel in late game, if you ever get there that is
