Hello Solomid.net community;

This will be my very first guide on Solomid.net, and I wanted to do the guide on my favourite and most played champion, Katarina. I watch tons of streams and videos of high ranked Katarina players such as; Scarra, Westrice, TiensiNoAkuma,Xpeke, Voyboy and I set up my runes and masteries according to them. I felt the need to do this guide because, I didn't see any good guide for Katarina that is also up to date on Solomid.net. Westrice's guide is really good, however it is not up to date. I am looking forward for your positive/negative criticism. Thank you!

Summoner Sets

Flash & Ignite
Flash is a no-brainer, almost every champion requires Flash. If your enemy has flash and you don't, you are automatically in a huge disadvantage. Also mobility is everything on Katarina, which makes flash even more crucial. Ignite is just there for the extra damage to get easier resets.
Flash & Exhaust
I rarely swap out Ignite for Exhaust but against bursty champions it can be a life saver (Such as Zed).

Item Builds

Against Single Target Harrass/No Skillshot
Starting Items:

Default Starting Build:

In order to maximize the movement speed in lane/map mobility I almost always start with boots + 4 pots. More movement speed lets you dodge skillshots in lane and allows you to roam faster. Four potions also give you a decent amount of sustain.

Against Single Target Harass/No Skillshots: (Kassadin, Kennen etc.)

Movement speed will not let you dodge on-target skills such as Kassadin's Q therefore in such match-ups I tend to start with Doran's Shield. It also gives you a lot of sustain, extra HP and the Unique Passive (Blocks 8 damage from single target attacks and spells from champions.) is really effective against single target harass.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
The way I play Katarina, and the way I think fits her kit maximizing the damage I will deal while sacrificing on some defensive stats because Katarina's role in teamfights is getting resets in the span of three seconds and in order to do this you will need damage. This build maximizes her damage output and I tend to finalize the build with a Guardian Angel for prolonged teamfight presence.

  • Vulnerable to crowd control abilities.
  • Hard to master.
  • You will get flamed for picking her and you will take the blame if you lose even if you have a good K/D/A.

Her Role In a Team

After certain changes to Katarina and the metagame, Katarina can be both played as a squishy assassin or a tanky damage dealer. Her passive Voracity is what makes Katarina the assassinating goddess she is. My build is set around this passive. Your job as Katarina is to get lots and lots of kills. Your passive resets the cooldowns of your three non-ultimate abilities and decreases the cooldown on Death Lotus by 15 seconds, each time you get a kill or an assist. Because your passive reduces your cooldowns, you don't need cooldown runes, cooldown shoes or cooldown masteries. That means I shouldn't see , or CDR runes when you are playing Katarina.

Skill Sequence

Explanation: Champion kills or assists reduce Death Lotus's cooldown by 15 seconds and refresh basic abilities.

  • Your bread and butter.
  • After each kill your cooldowns reset for your normal abilities.
  • After three kills, your ult cooldown resets.
  • To abuse this passive get lots of ability power, so you can kill more people in a team fight.
  • This skill requires you to have fast reflexes, when playing Katarina.

Bouncing Blade

Explanation: Katarina throws a dagger that bounces from enemy to enemy, dealing magic damage and marking them. Her next spell or basic attack against a marked target will consume the mark and deal additional magic damage.

Range of the first Bounce: 675

  • Your harassment skill.
  • If you cannot auto attack minions, last hit with this.
  • Can be bounced off from a minion, in order to harass without going near the enemy and taking damage.

Sinister Steel

Explanation: Katarina whirls her daggers around her, dealing magic damage to all enemies in the area. If she hits an enemy Champion, Katarina gains a burst of speed for a short duration.
Whirls daggers in a circle dealing 40/80/120/160/200 (+0.6) (+0.3) magic damage. If she hits an enemy Champion, Katarina gains 12/20/28/36.5/44% movement speed for 1 second.

  • Your wave clearing skill.
  • Speed buff will help you escape ganks.
  • Can have more burst than your ultimate if you can get the reset.

Explanation: Katarina instantly moves to her target's location and takes reduced damage from enemies for a few seconds. If the target is an enemy, she deals damage.
Moves to a target's location. Deals 40/70/100/130/160 (+0.4) magic damage if the target is an enemy.

After using Shunpo, Katarina takes 20% reduced damage for 3 seconds.

Range: 700

  • Your surviving tool.
  • Always carry a ward with you so you can put it down and Shunpo to it, this will have a Flash effect.
  • Always try to execute your enemies with Shunpo, so you can have a quicker time killing the others.

Death Lotus
Explanation: Katarina becomes a flurry of blades, throwing daggers with unrivaled speed at up to three nearby Champions. Daggers deal magic damage and reduce incoming healing on targets hit.
Becomes a flurry of blades, throwing daggers at the closest 3 enemy Champions dealing 400/500/600 (+3) (+1.75) magic damage over 2 seconds.

Daggers apply Grievous Wounds, reducing incoming healing by 50% for 3 seconds.

Range: 550

  • Hits three different champions, 10 daggers each, adding up to 30 daggers in total.
  • You can use this ultimate more than once in a teamfight, this will help you wreck up kills.
  • This ultimate doesn't need line of sight to be activated. Even if your enemies are against a wall, you can still channel this ult, and it will hit them. This will surprise your enemies, and can lead to you getting kills.
  • It has a small range so be careful to not waste it.

Item Builds

Starting Item:

boots-of-speed + health-potion3
(Recall at 1:30 for a fourth health potion in the fountain if you don't have to leash for your jungler.)

Against Physical Damage Dealers: (Zed, KhaZix, Jayce)

cloth-armor + health-potion5 or cloth-armor + health-potion3 + sight-ward (Wait 5 seconds in fountain for a Sight Ward)

Against Heavy Magic Poke:

rejuvenation-bead + health-potion4 + sight-ward2
Get cloth armor only, if you know you are going to face a really hard Attack Damage carry, such as Zed, Lee Sin. After the changes to Zhonya's Hourglass, the cloth armor start is even more viable than before. You can then turn the cloth armor into a Seeker's Armguard and then a Zhonya's which is one of your core items.

In these matchups you will need the extra armor and hp regeneration to survive during the laning phase. Other than that you should be getting Boots x 3 Health Pots. This gives you mobility in lane, faster ganks and makes you avoid ganks because of your high movement speed combined with Movement Speed Quints.

Early Game Goals:

Explanation:: Katarina works really well with Magic Penetration because of her high base damages, so rushing a Haunting Guise will make your early game phenomenally strong. Sorcerer's Shoes will give you more penetration as well as higher mobility.

Mid Game Goals:

Explanation: Rabadons Deathcap should be is a must buy for Katarina because all of her skills have Ability Power ratios and Deathcap is the item with the highest + Ability Power. We no longer rush Hextech Gunblade because Katarina's AD ratios got lowered. Abyssal works extremely well on Katarina because all of her skills have close range so she can benefit from Abyssal Scepter's debuff.

Why Deathcap?

Deathcap provides the highest Ability Power in the game. Buying it will increase your Bouncing Blade, Shunpo and Death Lotus damage substantially. The only downside of it is that it doesn't provide any defense. This is a high risk high reward situation.

Late Game Goals:

For survivability (Against AD)

This is one of Katarina's core items, due to the awesome passive it provides. Use Zhonya's Hourglass if you get caught out of position in a team fight, or if you went in in a team fight and all your skills are on cooldown. Zhonya's Hourglass also allows you to initiate team fights and still be safe which is great if your team lacks initiation.

Sunfire Cape gives high health and armor. It also gives you dps because of its passive and since you will be buying Magic Penetration items you will hit hard. This is one of the core items of Top Lane Katarina but can still be purchased by mid lane Katarina.

Other Items:

Void staff will give you super duper omega damage output combined with Rabadon's Deathcap and it will also allow you to shred through your opponents high magic resistance values.

The DFG buff made DFG viable on allmost all of the mages in certain scenarios. DFG will allow you to transition from a DPS mage into a Nuker. You will be able to grab kills easily which will help you to snowball into victory. Plus DFG is cheaper than Rabadons and gives you higher damage output with the awesome passive. I suggest getting DFG if your enemy AD carry gets fed.

Get this if the opposing team has lots of crowd control abilities that can be removed by Quicksilver Sash for example or or . Keep in mind that knock ups or knock backs cannot be stopped using Quicksilver Sash such as or .

If you have Guardian's Angel, and die, and your team mates kill someone while you are reviving your passive will proc and you will be able to cast all of your skills after you revive, which makes Guardian's Angel extremely good on Katarina.

In this new meta stacking health is a really smart choice thats why Rylai's Crystal Scepter is a viable item on Katarina.

Since Haunting Guise is one of your core items you should upgrade it into a Liandry's Torment once your core items are completed. Plus Liandry's + Rylai's combo is really strong.

Get this item if someone else on your team is building it also. They stack together and end in a %40 Spell Vampirism increase.

Get this item if you need spellwamp but no one on your team benefits Will of The Ancients.

If you started with Cloth Armor, turn your Boots of Speed into a Ninja Tabi. Although I never get this item. It's still viable. I usually turn my cloth armor into a guardian angel.

If you want mobility. I prefer this in solo queue games so you can be everywhere on the map.

If you are sure you are going to get fed, and you will be able to hold on to your stacks, Mejai is a good investment. But if you can't get past 10 stacks at least, it becomes non-efficient.

Same reason as above, since Katarina benefits both from AD and AP, you can get both Sword of The Occult and Mejai Soulstealer. However doing this is a really risky move, but if it pays off, it will pay off heavily.

Snowball Item Build

I don't recommend you to use this build most of the time, though it has its uses. Use this build, when you know you are going to get ahead. For example, if you are against a Karthus and you see that he is not very experienced, this build will be very good for you. Since Karthus does very poorly against Kat, you should be able to get early kills.

Start with a + as usual.

In your first trip back get a

In your second trip get a

After this point, try to secure as much kills as possible in order to get Soulstealer Stacks.

Your next goal should be

At this point, you should have some stacks on your Soulstealer. In order to secure those stacks, we will buy:

NOTE THAT: This will be your only defensive item in this build.

Your final item should be or

Summoner Spells

Ideal Choice:

Flash is perfect for Katarina, since it can be used both aggressively and defensively. You can flash into Shunpo someone that you can't reach with just shunpo, or you can flash away if you get stuck in a bad position.

If you are playing premade 5 vs 5, Teleport can be really useful. Even in solo queue getting Teleport will allow you to help your lanes if they are losing and Teleport is way better late game compared to Ignite. Teleporting into a ward when you are level 6, can surprise enemies and get you some easy kills.

Other Options:

Ignite just synergies exceptionally good with Katarina, because of her passive Voracity. Ignite secures you kills, which thanks to our passive turns into reduced cooldowns.

Ghost is also really good on Katarina, but I prefer Flash at all times. If you are used to playing with ghost, you can take it. But I don't suggest picking Ghost over Flash because you will be very aggressive ergo can get caught in bad positions. In this occasion, Flash will save you, where as Ghost won't. I would pick Ghost, if the enemy jungler is not a ganker, such as Lee Sin, Rammus or Maokai.

Exhaust isn't a very bad option either. If you Exhaust than use Death Lotus you can deal tons of damage. But as I stated earlier, Ignite is superior over Exhaust. If your team already has two or more ignites, you may consider getting exhaust. Also against Fiora I get Exhaust %99 of the times to counter her ult.

Cleanse is awesome after the buff so don't hesitate on using it if they have lots of cc, since now it also removes Exhaust and Ignite it's a very good option. Pick Flash/Cleanse or Cleanse/Ignite if the enemy middle lane is a champion who relies on his/her stun/silence/fear/bind/snare in order to do his/her full combo. Some examples are: Morgana, Annie, Twisted Fate, Brand, Anivia, Veigar, Cassiopeia.

Heal, after the huge buffs, works on almost any champion. Katarina is one of those "any champion"s. Use Shunpo, than Death Lotus than if you get really low, pop Heal. This will catch your enemies off guard, and help you secure some kills.

Get this only if you get Teleport. Teleport revive can help you clean up after a team fight if you died earlier. Also it turns a 5 vs 5 teamfight into a 6 vs 5 for your team. Though I have only used revive twice in my entire Katarina history.

I use three mastery builds for Katarina:

First one is 21/9/0 (Aggressive Path):
Offense Mastery Tree is overpowered at the moment. Taking improved spell pen. ignite, + 3 attack damage, %5 ability power increase in the offence and taking armor/magic resistance according to my lane matchup and Durability + Veteran's Scars makes Katarina really really good. (Q:Why +3 Attack Damage instead of +3 Ability Power? A:Because your Attack Damage ratio's are higher than your Ability Power ratio's. + 3 Attack Damage gives you 2.5 damage on Bouncing Blade and 1.7 damage on Death Lotus where as +3 Ability Power only gives 0.9 damage on Bouncing Blade and 0.9 damage on Death Lotus.

Summoner's Wrath: You will take one point in this to get the Ignite's +5 attack damage and +5 ability power bonus. Both AP and AD works really well with Katarina.

Brute Force: +2 Attack Damage is really good at early levels. Increasing your damage with Bouncing Blade and Death Lotus, as well as making last hitting easier. You don't need the 3rd AD, because +2 give 2 damage to Bouncing Blade, and +3 gives 2 damage too.

Mental Force: +4 Ap is really good for your Shunpo. Try picking it, if you are going 21 offense.

Sorcery: You are only getting this for Arcane Knowledge.

Arcane Knowledge: This is one of the, if not the best mastery for Katarina. Makes you hit much much more than you normally would.

Deadliness: Attack Damage per Level works exceptionally well with Katarina do to her great Attack Damage scalings. The reason why I take Deadliness over Blast is that, Deadliness gives you higher damage on Bouncing Blades and Death Lotus. Since our main damage Source is Death Lotus, I take Deadliness. It also gives you higher damage on your auto-attacks. This may seem redundant but +9 attack damage can decide whether you will secure a kill or not.

Blast: Since this skill also works really well with Katarina, I will include it in this list. Like I explained earlier I find Deadliness more useful for Katarina. However you can get Blast over Archmage. At level 18, if you have over 340 Ability Power, than Archmage will give you higher bonus Ability Power than Blast does. If you buy Deathcap, you will most likely exceep 360 Ability Power. So if you will not buy Deathcap, you may take Blast, and it will provide you a little more than Archmage does.

Havoc: Don't get it, waste of 3 points. Get +3 Ap instead.

Archmage: This combined with Rabadon's Deathcap gives you around 160 more Ability Power (assuming you have around 450 AP with your full buid, without adding the Archmage or Deathcap Bonuses)than you normally have. If you finish your build you will you will have 450 Raw AP. With the Deathcap and Archmage bonuses, this number goes up to 614. Perfect mastery for Kat.

Executioner: Probably the second best mastery for Katarina. This increases your damage output significantly. Makes you able to burst people even faster than you normally would.

Resistance: Gives you free +6 Magic Resist. Get this if you are going against an AP champion.

Hardiness: Gives you free +6 Armor. Get this if you are going against an AD champion

Durability: Free HP ? I'll take it. (You should too!)

Veteran's Scars: Katarina starts off with 478 HP, with this mastery, you increase it by 30. This can help you in lane when fighting 1 on 1 or can help you escape some ganks with very low HP.

Indomitable: Get it if you are going 21 in defense. Reduces damage done to you, especcialy significant in laning phase. Very good against Lulu, her Pixie does 1 damage per tick.

Initiator: Increases your level 1 movespeed. Great stuff.

Mercenary: Bread and butter. Makes you earn 49 gold for each kill/assist.

Juggernaut: Free extra hp is always good. Also the cc reduction is very nice.

Against Physical Damage (Eg. Irelia, Gangplank, Nasus)

Against Magical Damage (Eg. Kassadin, Leblanc,

The second one is 9/21/0 (Defensive Path)
This is a more tanky mastery setup. Since the Defense Mastery Tree is equally buffed as the offence tree, this Mastery Tree is completely viable on Katarina. Also the Mercenary mastery synergizes really well with Katarina's passive. Mercenary gives you 24 gold for each champion kill or assist and Katarina's passive gives 25 gold for each champion kill or assist, so for each kill or assist you get 49 extra gold. Since Katarina usually gets a lot of kills, the Mercenary mastery is really effective, which makes the defensive path stimulating. I have been using this mastery tree a lot in my last couple of games, and I would suggest testing it out. Nowadays, I use this mastery setup, primarily.

The third one is 27/3/0 (Over Aggressive Path)
This mastery setup is just for the damage it provides. It provides little to non tankyness. Only use this setup if you are going to have an easy lane match-up or if you feel really comfortable using Katarina.

You don't need cooldown because of your passive, you don't need reduced death time, mana regen. Only thing you need from the utility tree is the improved flash if you are using flash as your primary summoner spell. In that case, you can put one point in utility.

  • Greater Mark of Insight (Magic Penetration): Magic Penetration is really really good on Katarina, as on other mages. Either get these or get AD per level marks.

  • Greater Mark of Might (Attack Damage Per Level): These runes are awesome. They give you 23 AD at level 18. Since you won't get many Attack Damage items, this Attack Damage boost will be good. Also, these runes allow you to last hit under tower at level 4, because of the small boost that they give. Last hitting is core on Katarina as in many other champions. I have seen these runes from TiensiNoAkuma's Katarina guide and tried them. They seem to work out so far. The lost magic penetration isn't a very big problem because you will be getting a Void Staff in the lategame.

  • Greater Mark of Strength [Attack Damage]: Use this rune page, only if you are bad at last hitting minions. It gives you a better early game, but a worse late game. I would suggest using attack damage marks, if you are going against a strong melee ad champion.

  • Greater Seal of Vitality (Health Per Level): Katarina is a really squishy champion and we will not be buiding any health item in our build(Besides Haunting Guise and +HP on Haunting Guise is minimal), so the extra health will be helpful.

  • Greater Seal of Resilience (Armor):

Armor seals are by far the most efficient seals in the game. Armor seals make your opponents auto attacks deal way lower damage. Most of your opponents in mid-lane will be ranged auto attackers, so armor seals will help you a lot, during early game. Late game, these seals will make enemy carries deal way less damage to you. Also if you are going solo top against an AD bruiser or carry, these seals are a must.

  • Greater Seal of Warding (Magic Resistance): Use Magic Resistance Seals, if you are going against a strong mage in the laning phase, such as Le Blanc or Veigar or Kassadin. It will provide you with +7 Magic Resist. Also use magic resist seals when you are facing a melee mage, such as Gragas, Fizz, Kassadin, Mordekaiser, Akali, Chogath, Malphite, Rumble, Sion and Galio, because their only harass will be through skills, not auto attacks.

  • Greater Seal of Force (Ability Power Per Level): Use these runes if you are %100 sure that you are going to win your laning phase. These give you better late game damage, but less late game survivability.

  • Greater Glyph of Force (Ability Power Per Level): After the Katarina rework, Ability Power became really important on Katarina and these runes will provide you with AP.

  • Greater Glyph of Warding (Magic Resist): These runes are nerfed, but they are still on of the best options for glyphs. They give you enough tankiness in order to survive your lane.

  • Greater Glyph of Shielding (Magic Resist Per Level): Almost all the time you will be facing a magic damage dealer in mid. These runes will decrease the damage you take from these magic damage dealers. Also after the flat Magic Resist rune nerf, these runes are viable options.

  • Greater Glyph of Resilience (Armor): Only usage of these runes is against: Talon mid, Gangplank top, Riven top, Fiora top and Renekton top, because you want to be able to stay in lane against these champions. I also highly suggest starting with Cloth Armor + 5 Health Potions against the champions listed above.

  • Greater Quint of Swiftness (Movement Speed): These quints are really good, they give you mobility, which is key to Katarina. These quintessences will allow you to outrun opponents who aren't using them, allow you to catch them with your Shunpo and finish them off.

  • Greater Quintessence of Potency (Ability Power): After the Katarina rework, Ability Power became really important on Katarina and these runes will provide you with AP.

  • Greater Quint of Warding (Magic Resistance): Use when you are laning against, Le Blanc, Veigar, Kassadin and Ryze, in order to lane against them.

  • Greater Quint of Insight (Magic Penetration): Katarina's Quintessence choice is not really that important. I find Magic Penetration optimal. It boosts all of your skill's damages, and you want to deal high damage as Kat.

Which Lane Should I Take?

Katarina belongs to a solo lane. Middle lane is always superior upon solotop, but if she is forced to go top, she can handle most heroes. She can, exceptionally well, handle 2v1 situations thanks to Bouncing Blades. Most important part is that she has to be passive in the lane before level 6 because she is pretty weak without her ulti 6 and before she gets the Hextech Revolver.

Early Game

Katarina's early game is probably her biggest weakness. There are very little to no champion that she can counter. Because of this reason, pre level 6, you should focus on last hitting and dodging your enemy's skill shots. There isn't a limit for early game's time. What I mean is, you can't say, early game ends at 12:00 minute mark. In some games, early game can end earlier and in some it can end later than 12:00 minute mark. My definition of early game is, the time where no team fights happen, and it is just a farm fest. Only action during the early game phase is gonna be provided by the junglers. To wrap things up, farm using your Bouncing Blade and auto-attacks until level 6, and try killing your opponent at 6. But wait until he/she uses her/his Crowd Control abilities. Keep in mind that if you are going against one of your counters (Ryze, Le Blanc, Kassadin, Fiora etc.) there is no way you can win your lane on your own (unless they are really really bad), just ask for a gank from your jungle, or ask him to babysit your lane all game. Babysitting really works good if you are going against a Kassadin, because he doesn't have an escape spell before level 6 and he needs to go into melee range in order to last hit. Which leaves him vulnerable to early ganks. You should always have higher cs than your opponent, because it is really to last hit with the reworked Katarina.

Mid Game

Mid game is where Katarina shines the most. You should have your Sorcerer's Shoes and Hextech Revolver by this time, and should be working towards a Rabadon's Deathcap. During mid game, Dragon should be your main objective. Getting dragon, sometimes can seal a victory for your team.

Katarina is a really good Dragon fighter. What I mean by that is, Katarina works really good in fights near dragon, because there aren't many places where the enemies can run due to the fact that Dragon's area is a closed field. Don't forget that Dragon gives 190 gold to your whole team, which in total is 950 gold. This 950 gold can decide who will win the next fight. So always keep dragon warded, and try securing it when you get a chance.

Try and take advantage of Katarina's strong mid game. If you can secure 3 - 5 kills during mid game, you will have an easier time during the late game.

Late Game

Katarina is also very strong Late Game. By this time, you are expected to complete Hextech Gunblade and Rabadon's Deathcap and you should work towards your defensive item. Be careful while picking your defensive item. Press Tab to see if your enemy has Attack Damage or Ability Power Based champions. Also look at which enemy is fed. If there is a 5-0 Kassadin on the enemy team, an Abyssal Scepter is needed. In this stage of the game both teams should work their way towards Baron. Baron usually decides who the winner will be due to the strong buff it provides.

Katarina is also a good Baron fighter. Your enemy will be attacking Baron (probably) with all 5 of their team. This is a perfect situation for you to Shunpo > Sinister Steel > Death Lotus > Bouncing Blade (After getting kills) use Sinister Steel and Bouncing Blade again to clean up the rest of the team. Don't forget that Baron Nashor hits really hard. Use this to your advantage if your enemy is trying to get Baron. Here is a beautiful demonstration for this:

VS Crowd Control Abilities

Katarina is extremely squishy and Crowd Control abilities totally counter her. For this reason, you have to wait for your enemy to use all their reliable Crowd Control abilities. Reliable crowd control abilities are easy to land so you should wait until enemies use them

Reliable Crowd Control Abilities:

---> Stuns:

Cryptic Gaze
Petrifying Gaze
Slicing Maelstrom
Nether Grasp
Shield of Daybreak
Ruthless Predator
Bear Stance
Hyper-Kinetic Position Reverser
Aegis of Zeonia
Pick A Card (Gold Card)

---> Silences:

Dark Wind
Decisive Strike
Null Sphere
Chaos Storm
Static Field

---> Knock Ups / Knock Backs

and Headbutt / Pulverize
Stand Aside
Explosive Cask
Roundhouse Kick
Unstoppable Force
Depth Charge
Heroic Charge
Buster Shot
Pillar of Filth *This does not cancel Katarina's ultimate, it stop the channel, but daggers keep dealing the damage. (Thank you TiensiNoAkuma for this info)
Rolling Thunder

Team Fights

Katarina is one of the hardest champions to control in a team fight. You must be very good at positioning, must be aware of your enemies, their available crowd controls, their hit points. You must know when to use Death Lotus and when to cancel it and use Shunpo. Always try last hitting enemies with your Shunpo. For example, cast Death Lotus, and when your enemy has low enough health, use your Shunpo to last hit him/her. This will make you kill your enemies faster. Don't forget that even 0.25 seconds during a team fight is important. It can decide which team wins the team fight or not.

Who To Focus?

Basically this is kind of a silly question. Why? Because you have to hit anyone that is in range. You should wait for all Crowd Control abilities to be used, and then jump in with Shunpo and ult. You can't decide who your ultimate will hit, but anyone who gets hit by hit will receive tons of damage. So don't hesitate on using your ultimate on Tanks / Bruiser. However your main focus always should be like this: AD Carry > AP Carry > Support > Bruiser > Tank

Ranked Play

My Own Katarina Stats:

Finally REACHED GOLD. So happy.
As you can see, I've won the majority of the games I've played with kat, and almost always had a +2.0 K/D ratio. This is a proof to those who think Katarina isn't viable in ranked. I have used Katarina almost every game from 1200 into 1500 elo and I have been successful in most of them. The best side of Katarina is, your opponents will usually underestimate your damage because they are not used to seeing Katarina. My only advice would be, not to first pick Katarina and if you will firstpick her, you should ban LeBlanc.

Katarina is completely viable in ranked games, if only the enemy doesn't have 10 crowd control abilities. Just you should master Katarina in Normal Draft before going into the Ranked Area. The reason behind playing Normal Draft Mode is because you can see what the enemies pick. For example you wouldn't pick Katarina against a team with Udyr + Riven. Katarina is also viable in tournament play, however the only pro gamer manly enough to play Katarina in tournaments is Scarra. Watch his games as a proof of how viable Katarina is. Be aware that you need wards if you want to play ranked.,

Smartcasting Skills

What is smart casting?
"It automatically casts the selected ability at (or towards) the current mouse cursor position as if you had first pressed the ability button and then left-clicked at the target position. Smart cast works for self-buffs abilities, targeted abilities, ground targeted abilities and skillshots."

Smartcasting increases your reaction time in every champion. Katarina is a very reaction time dependent champion. You have to time your Death Lotus, Shunpo, Bouncing Blade and Hextech Gunblade's active really good, in order to get the highest damage output. That's why, we will set our Q,W,E,R keys to smart cast. Also set your first item slot to smart cast, in order to smart cast your Hextech Gunblade's active. Using your main combo will be easier when smart casting. However before using smart cast on a champion, you need to learn the ranges of his/her skills. You have to learn how far Katarina's Shunpo or Bouncing Blades can go.

Also, smart cast wards too. Put your wards in the 5th item slot, and make it so that when you press the A button, you smart cast a ward. This way you can quickly press A and then E to use your Shunpo as a flash, by Shunpoing into a ward.

Katarina's Lane Match-ups

Your Counters:

: She got buffed a lot. She is a pain in the ass. Just last hit with your Bouncing Blade, and ask for a gank. She wrecks you before level 6 and after level 6. However if you get an early kill, you can out harrass her with you Bouncing Blade. Also the new shield is annoying.

He disgustingly beats you in lane. Just try and passively farm. Than leave the lane and look for gank opportunities.

Pre-game Preparations: Get flat Magic Resistance Glyphs, and get 6 Magic Resist from the masteries.

Same thing as Ryze. She will not let you get any last hits, and at level 6 she can one shot you so I would suggest not picking Katarina against Le Blanc. However if you do, my advice would be to get an early Negatron Cloak, right after Hextech Revolver. This will make you able to survive her burst.

Pre-game Preparations: Get flat Magic Resistance Glyphs, Magic Resistance Quintessences and get 6 Magic Resist from the masteries.

(Attack Damage) She will harass you to death, before 5. If she is good, you will get 0 - 10 cs at level 18.

Pre-game Preparations: Get flat Armor Seals, flat Armor Glyphs and Health Regen Quintessences, also get +6 Magic Resist, +6 Armor and +3 Health Regen from the defensive tree.

He will heal your harass. He will interrupt your ultimate. There is nothing you can do against him. My advice would be "Don't go against him in solotop."

Champs You Counter

Who You Can Lane Against Easilty:

  • : I have played against many Zyra's on PBE. I have played over 15 games against her, and I can easily say that she doesn't do well against Katarina. She doesn't have an interrupt before level 6 when she gets her ult and even when she gets her ult, it has a really high cooldown. Also, you can easily dodge her passive by Shunpoing into a minion after killing her.

  • : Kog Maw is not a commonly seen AP mid champion, but he can be played as one. Katarina crushes Kogmaw very hard. He has no way of escaping, and you can dodge his passive with Shunpo after killing him. One of the easiest match-ups.

  • : (TO BEAT FIORA, YOU NEED EXHAUST) I used to overlook Fiora. She is a great champ, I've got nothing to say to that, but she is beatable. Try to harass her with your Q. When she jumps on you and activates E, Shunpo into a minion. When she is level 6, exhaust her before she uses her ulti. That really messes her up.

  • : You own him before 6. Harrass him everytime you have cooldown's ready. Don't let him farm his Q. Kill him or send him home before 6 and if you didn't kill him before he reaches level 6, go to a lane and gank or ask for your jungler to gank him.

  • : You probably won't face a Dr. Mundo at solo top, but I'll tell you how to counter him anyways. Dodge his cleaver, and harass him with Killer Instincts + Bouncing Blade.

  • : Swain is one of the few champions you can counter in lane. Free farm until level 6. When you get your ultimate, try killing him. Don't forget that roots don't cancel your ultimate. Also befor engaging, use your killer instincts + bouncing blade combo so he gets less hp regen from his ultimate.

  • : He is melee. You can out harass him easily. If he withers you shunpo into a minion. When you are level 6 you can kill him with your ult.

  • : Very easy to lane against. Same thing as Nasus. Harass him and when he slows you, shunpo back into a minion. When you get him low enough, go in to kill him. Don't forget to ignite him just before his ulti ends.

  • : Lux doesn't have a cc that can stop your channel. Also all of her skills are skill shots that can be dodged wirh Shunpo.

  • : Passively farm until level 6. Than you can easily kill him, if he fights.

  • : Avoid her Illusory Orb in laning stage. Later on wait for her to use her taunt, than go in with Shunpo, than ult, than Bouncing Blade.

  • : You counter her. Harrass with bouncing blades before leve 6. Kill her with your ulti when you are 6. Even if she uses Twilight Shroud, your ulti will still hit her.

  • : Laning phase will be passive. After level 6, dodge her stun than Shunpo into Death Lotus into Bouncing Blade.

  • : (Ability Power Nidalee) She is easy to beat. You can out harass her after 5 level. Also after 6, in order for her to deal damage, she has to come into melee range, which makes her vulnerable into your ultimate.

  • : She is very easy to handle. Just dodge her ball with your Shunpo. If she doesn't have her ball near you, she will not deal damage.

  • : Almost all of his skills are skill shots, so if you start with Boots of Speed, you will have an easy time laning. You can also dodge his skill shots using Shunpo. Shunpo a creep after he casts his Sear or Pillar.

  • : Easy to lane against. He is melee . He needs to Fling you in order to do something, but he can't because of your Shunpo. When he comes near, Shunpo into a minion.

  • : One of the easiest match-ups for Katarina. Engage when he doesn't have his Pick-A-Card up.

  • : Don't ult when his ult is off cool down. Dodge barrels and harass with Bouncing Blade.

  • : You can free farm against him. He doesn't have an escape tool, have your jungler gank your lane several times. You should be able to beat him that way.

  • : She will push really hard. Try last hitting at the tower using your Shunpo and Bouncing Blades. Bait her into using Dark Binding, then Shunpo into him and get some free damage, while taking little to no damage yourself.

  • : Zilean is really squishy. After level 6, you can literally one shot him with your combo. He will out harass you before level 6, but after you get your Revolver, the lane is yours(If you don't give him early kills.)

  • : Got nerfed, not very strong atm.

  • : Dodge his skill shots. Harass him before level 3. Push him out of the lane. Own him before he gets Feast stacks.

  • : He is very strong in lane, but will go oom really fast. Try dodging some skillshots, and make him waste his mana. Also wait for him to detonate his W skill. His only interrupt is his W, and since it is on a very long cooldown (something like 20 seconds) he will only be able to use it once in a team fight.

These Heroes Are Hard to Face, But Possible:

  • : After her buffs she became really strong. Wait until she uses her E and than all in her. Try to dodge her Q's and W's.

  • : He only has his silence before level 6. If he silences you, don't keep on running back, instead strike him back, because he has nothing else besides silencing you. After level 6, he becomes a problem. Don't let him get early kills.

  • : His E skill is your problem. Don't let it bounce to you, also don't try exchanging with him if his Voidling is up.

  • : She is very strong early on. After level 5, you can trade with her using Bouncing Blade. Try dodging her Noxious Blast, since she needs to hit that in to pull her full combo.

  • : Fizz is an extremely versatile champion. He can be played as a bruiser or a mage. Mage Fizz is easy to handle as Katarina. You should farm for the first 5 levels. After getting to level 5 and upgrading your bouncing blades to 3 level you can use it to harrass. If he tries to auto attack you Shunpo to a minion. After you get to level 6, try killing him with Death Lotus. If you get pushed, just ask your jungler to gank. Bruiser Fizz is close to impossible to lane against. You cannot kill him unless he plays very aggressive. Try swapping lanes.

  • : You can't hit him much due to his retardedly high base Magic Resistance. Dodge his skill shots, and get minions, after level 6 gank other lanes.

  • : Start with cloth armor and 5 health potions. Don't try harrassing him, because he will out harrass you. Play passively until you get your Revolver. Than you can out sustain him.

  • : Harass him with Bouncing Blade, don't try trading or fighting with him. He will beat you and cancel your ultimate channel.

  • : He is weak before level 6 so are you. But he gets really strong after level 9. Try to farm better than him before level 9.

  • : He pushes too hard and you can't Shunpo to him because of his H-28G Evolution Turret. His Hextech Micro-Rockets is really annoying too.

  • : He is extremely mobile, just try passively farming against him. Get armor seals and glyphs.

  • : Dodge his Axe, don't go near melee range so he can't deal damage. Because he doesn't have any kind of interrupt, you can easily use your ultimate.

  • : She is not a common solo top, but she can beat Katarina easily. You have to play very safe in order to win that lane.

  • : You can't do anything against him. He will just force you out of lane, harrass you to death. My only advice would be to hug the tower and let him push. Than tell your jungler to gank.

  • : She has two channel interrupts, you can't ulti her. If you can't ulti someone, you can't kill them. If you can't kill them, you lose your lane. If you lose your lane you eventually lose the game(Usually at least)

  • : Her ult completely counters your ult. Don't go near her. Try harassing her with your Bouncing Blade. If he zones you out, send a Bouncing Blade into a nearby minion and hope for the best.

  • : Has a stun, gets tanky innately. High damage output. Amazing shield. Hard to play against, but it is possible. Wait him to use his stun, then go all in.

  • : He is very much like Katarina, but has more cc. He can interrupt your ultimate with Cutthroat. If you can avoid that, you can lane easily.

  • : After he uses his Flamespitter(Q), Shunpo away from his melee range. After the skill ends, harass him. Don't get hit by electro-harpoons.

  • : He has 2 interrupts for your ultimate, but you out range him. If he uses both of his cc, go in for the kill.

Katarina's Best Friends

By best friends I mean champions who combo really good with Katarina. These champions have AOE Crowd Control abilities. They make Katarina hit her ultimate really easily.

These champions include:

  • Amumu: His ultimate works exceptionally well with yours. You will want an Amumu on your team as Katarina.
  • Annie: If she uses her passive with Tibbers, Tibbers becomes an AOE Stun. Which works really good with Kat.
  • Galio: Same deal as Amumu, but more damage.
  • Gangplank: Global ultimate, huge AOE + good amount of slow, what else can you ask.
  • Jarvan: He traps people with his ult, if they don't have any escape spell, or flash, you can punish them real hard.
  • Leona: She has 3 stuns, one is aoe, great stuff.
  • Kayle: She makes you invulnerable for 3 seconds. If you are ulting, and you get Kayle ulted, the enemy is pretty much screwed. Kayle is one of my favorite champions to play on the same team with, when I'm playing Kat.
  • Kennen: AOE stun + crazy damage.
  • Malphite: AOE Knock-up + mediocre damage. Still does the job.
  • Morgana: AOE Slow + Stun + uber duber damage.
  • Orianna: She puts her ball on you > You Shunpo in > She uses W and Ulti > You use ulti > GG
  • Sona: She has a ridiculous ultimate, works well with yours.
  • Yorick: If he ults you, you will be able to do what Katarina does the best, clean up kills.

Why u No Buy Rylai?

Simple. Because it sucks on Katarina. You need to get kills, not slow enemies. Rylai's Scepter isn't cost efficient, and it only provides 80 Ability Power, where as Hextech Gunblade provides 40 Attack Damage and 70 Ability Power and since Katarina's Q and R scale off with both Attack Damage and Ability Power, Hextech Gunblade is a superior option. Also it provides lane sustain. If you dont believe me lets ask for Scarra's opinion on Rylai's Crystal Scepter:

Q: Scarra, what do you think about Rylai's Crystal Scepter on Katarina

A: You pay 3000g for 80ap and then wonder why your damage isn't high enough to kill someone.
It wasn't until people I transitioned from rylais into gunblade that i noticed that rylais is a super situational item and should almost never be bought outside of very few champions/situations.

This is why a lot of people do bad with kat and other champions is because they build inefficiently and then cannot snowball well throughout the game.

Closing Words

I felt the need to make this guide, because I main Katarina and I couldn't see any useful and upto date guides on Solomid.net. I also wanted to clear some people's minds about the cooldown reduction runes and Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Thanks for reading my guide. Please leave your positive or negative criticism. I will be updating this guide every now and then.

Well this may help an experienced kat player like me but if you can take advantage of teleport and getting countered try this build:

start boots 4

On first back you should have 1200 at least considering you max your q.

Buy A Mejas soul stealer

Turn boots into mobi's if enough gold

Make sure you tell your bot and top to keep warded because you'll be teleporting for some kills.

If you succesfully gank bot you'll have either a kill or two which therefor means you have either 2 3 or 4 stacks on meja's then buy sword of the occult Continue to snowball by this time if you were not playing safe with a counter mid or going all in you should be ahead.

This is now when you start going for an immediate rabadons to increase your ap brought by meja's after you get that its GA time you already have sufficient damage and if you aren't carrying don't mind not taking kills and feeding off assists from the side lines, This is a fantastic build if you're an experienced kat player. Last item is always based on situation i usually get rylai's if they're stacking health go with some health shred (Liandry's torment).

Max q,w,e this order, and r whenever possible. I have been going against constat counters but that should not stop you from dominating the map with mobi boots and the map. Always remember almost everytime you go back you should buy wards. i go 27/3/0 kat with Ap glyphs movement glyphs spell pen marks and ap seals you can maneuver runes depending on situation or how you want to play. With these runes you should be poking down your opponent rather quick and your ult is truly amazing with all of these items, masteries and runes put together.

Yes you may think bad of this build but it works extremely well for competent players or people who have been playing kat for a long time.

June 20, 2013 - 01:55 PM #4

@bagshark> Coming from a really experienced Kat player with over 1000 kata games > There are some matchups where you can't even lane without merc treads (Fiddlesticks) and if you get maxed tenacity going 9-21 masteries with merc treads actually you will be fairly safe from CC as long as the enemies don't chain every CC on you (but that means your positiong is just wrong). Merc Treads can be built even on an ADC why not on Kat. There's no such thing as SORC BOOTS are a must.. everything is situational and the more you play the more you learn. Sometimes sacrificing some damage can lead to you surviving at key points of the game where you might have died.

May 30, 2013 - 12:50 PM #5

I think kat isn't ult reliant if you build her AP, otherwise, you are trying to make new kat old kat...

May 25, 2013 - 07:50 PM #6

I don't really like the tenacity boots idea. in most cases on katarina, if you get stunned, you're either dead or prevented to deal any dmg with your ult which is the main source of damage. smart players in most cases would avoid stuns compleatly by engaging at the right moment. and as an assassin, you're not supposed to eat alot of damage during engagements. also sunfire cape seems pretty useless on kat.(I really like your guide, but wanted to point out these things, might be wrong but these are my opinions, just not to confuse anyone :P) good work tho.

May 16, 2013 - 07:21 PM #7

I don't really like revolver on kat, you can just get mroe hp with health pots...

April 3, 2013 - 07:15 PM #8

I like Q E W combo but that's just me.

December 10, 2012 - 04:38 AM #9

Mental Force in your masteries shows as 4/3. Just a heads up.

September 3, 2012 - 09:36 PM #10

@stoffi28 Because all of her skills are target spells, which means she is easy to use. But it is hard to master her mechanics, cooldowns, ranges and resets.
