Introduction

**Reminder: this is what I do, it may not fit everyone's play style, but it has worked very well for me.**
Cho'Gath is my main, I have played numerous games as an AP Jungle Cho'Gath, and I have found him to be an extremely effective champion when used this way. He can counter most junglers, and has insane sustain in the jungle. His late game power is nearly unmatched in most cases, and he is always feared by the enemy team. In this guide I will cover all of the basics to the AP Jungle Cho'Gath. This will include the following:
-Runes
-Masteries
-Items
-Match-ups
-Your role in the match
I will go in to detail on each of these, covering all you need to know about why I do what I do, and how it will help you in your games.

Read on, and please enjoy! I hope this guide helps you in your journey playing a very unique and powerful champion!

Runes

The need for armor runes comes from the fact that you are a jungler, and AP Cho'Gath will need the extra armor since you will not be building like a tank. The mana regeneration will be needed for very early game, so you can clear the jungle quicker without fear of losing mana, this really only makes impact on the first few levels. For the one quint of AP, it helps with early game gank damage.

0 Utility
This is a core AP Jungler 9/21/0 mastery set-up.

Defense: 21

Tough Skin - Basic jungler mastery, very useful early game.

Recovery - Useful for our build because this reduces need to recall early.

Veteran Scars - Health is good! This is useful to keep your jungler from need of recall.

Bladed Armor - Good use against neutral monsters in the Jungle, so an obvious pick. This will help a lot early on.

Juggernaut - As I've said before, more health = more sustain, staying alive and well in the jungle and avoiding recall is the key to success as a jungler.

Hardiness - Junglers ALWAYS make good use of armor, early on, having a ton of armor sets you above the rest and helps a lot with that sustain.

Perseverance - Going on down the line of health related masteries, this one is the next that will provide sustain assistance.

Reinforced Armor - This has some use on occasions when it's needed, but it's more just a choice over Swiftness because it has more use to your jungler.

Tenacious - This one is useful for that extra layering of defense in team fights later on.

Legendary Guardian - Very useful to keep you in less CC danger.

Offense: 9

Fury - Cho'Gath needs all the attack speed he can get, coupled with his E it can make clearing jungles a quick process.

Butcher - Pretty useful for early game jungle clearing.

Mental Force - AP Cho'Gath needs... well, AP, so get it!

Feast - Combined with Cho'Gath's passive , this makes for some crazy sustain in the jungle.

Arcane Mastery - Some extra AP to help deal damage.

Utility: 0

Not much that's useful for AP Jungle Cho'Gath in here.

Summoner Sets

Flash & Smite
Pretty normal set-up, smite is a must. Other than smite, flash will be the only useful spell.

Item Explanations

Hunter's Machete
Since you're a jungler, this is the best item to start with, as it helps with damage to neutral monsters in the jungle.
Health Potion
5 of these with your machete will keep you lasting in the jungle early on, recalling means you're not clearing, so you want to avoid that!
Warding Totem
Grab this free trinket and use it to ward places you feel necessary, such as your red or blue to keep an eye on invasion of these critical points.
Spirit Stone
Should be bought on first recall, this is an upgrade of the machete and will help with the jungle for a little while longer. We will not be upgrading any further as when we have the chance to it, won't be necessary. It will actually be sold later on.
Boots of Speed
Another item to get on the first recall, these will help with increasing speed, and we will upgrade them later on.
Fiendish Codex
The last item on your first recall. This is your first piece to your first core item, Nashor's Tooth. This increases ability power, and will be used to build Nashor's Tooth later.
Nashor's Tooth
Should be bought on second recall. This is your main core item, it increases attack speed heavily and has a decent impact on your AP.
Sorcerer's Shoes
If you have enough on second recall buy this and upgrade it with Alacrity.
Enchantment: Alacrity
If you were doing well enough, you should get your Sorcerer's Shoes and this on your second recall, if not, don't fret. This will help your movement speed a ton.
Haunting Guise
This should be worked on and will probably be available to you by your third or fourth recall, depending on how well you've performed ganks, and your clear speed in the jungle. This is the first piece to your second core item, Liandry's Torment.
Blasting Wand
You should have this on your fourth or fifth recall depending on how well you're doing. This should be purchased before upgrading to Liandry's Torment, so that you are ready for Rabadon's Deathcap after grabbing Liandry's Torment. After this item, you won't have a set time to get the next few items, it all depends on your jungle pace and ganks from here on.
Liandry's Torment
Sell your Spirit Stone, as it has lost most of its use at this point, then buy this. This item will buff your AP attacks very nicely with the AP increase and magic penetration. The 300 health will also benefit for your tanky role in team fights.
Rabadon's Deathcap
A must for any AP champion. This will buff your AP tremendously. This is your last core item, and will put you in to the phase of being feared by the enemy team.
Frozen Heart
This is the part where there is a choice to be made, grabbing this or Abyssal Scepter relies on a few questions;
Are there more AD champs than AP?
Is there a fed AD champ?
Is the enemy team building for armor?
If you answer yes to any of these, then you should go with building this over Abyssal Scepter.
Abyssal Scepter
Same rules apply to this as Frozen Heart.
Are there more AP champs than AD?
Is there a fed AP champ?
Is the team building for magic resist?
If you answer yes to any of these, then you should go with this over Frozen Heart.
Zhonya's Hourglass
The final item you will build to put you through end game. This will heavily buff your AP and armor, making you an extreme threat. This will also give you an invincibility active that you may use if you find yourself focused in a team fight.

Skills

Carnivore
This passive will work wonders in the jungle, the health and mana restoration keeps that sustain going.
Rupture
Your main attack as AP Jungle Cho'Gath, aim this ahead of where enemies are moving to land the attack.
Feral Scream
Not a useful attack for this play-style.
Vorpal Spikes
This is a very useful skill in jungle clearing and lane pushing.
Feast
Your greatest skill! Use this to get big, and have tons of health.

Champion Matchups

Aatrox
Difficulty
Favors You
If you find yourself in the jungle against Aatrox, it can be a bit of a challenge, as his sustain is really good. Early game will be tough for you, especially if Aatrox is stealing buffs. As long as you ward your buffs and keep healthy when heading in to dangerous situations where Aatrox may be, you can keep up against him until you have a chance to build Thornmail, it may be a good idea to build Thornmail before Rabadon's Deathcap in this case. Once you have Thornmail, Aatrox should not be much of a threat to you.
Amumu
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
With the way Amumu jungles, his tanky style is tough to counter. The only real challenge here would be getting trapped by him. If you can avoid that, you should be able to handle him.
Elise
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
With Elise being one of the top junglers, it's no surprise that she can counter Cho'Gath pretty well. Her speed is her biggest threat, as long as you can Q her before engaging with your R at the ready, you will be able to to fair pretty well against her in a 1v1 fight.
Fiddlesticks
Difficulty
Favors You
Not much of a challenge here, the only thing to look out for is his W , as he'll drain you quick, although in most cases you'll be able to kill him before he can drain you out.
Hecarim
Difficulty
Favors You
Hecarim's threat is his speed, just keep up with him in the jungle, and don't try to chase him unless you know for sure you have an advantage.
Jarvaniv
Difficulty
Favors You
Jarvan IV is a pretty tough champion when it comes to jungling, his true threat will be his ability to lock you in, so if he confronts you, do not try and run, just make sure you aren't on CD for your R and Q .
Leesin
Difficulty
Favors You
Lee Sin is fast, and dodges very well. if you can time your Q correctly, you should have no problem.
Masteryi
Difficulty
Favors You
Master Yi is no threat to you, even when fed, your Thornmail will keep you from any real threat of Yi.
Nasus
Difficulty
Favors You
The only problem with Nasus for you will be his ult, avoid him in 1v1 fights when his ult is available. Gank when he is vulnerable (after use of his ult). If you must attack him when his ult is ready, request assistance, and Q him as much as you can to keep him from getting too close.
Nautilus
Difficulty
Favors You
Nautilus is no threat to you when you're doing well. Just keep back a bit when he is shielded.
Nocturne
Difficulty
Favors You
Nocturne can be a threat when fed, and his ult is dangerous. As long as you're not playing too bravely, you can counter him pretty well.
Shaco
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Shaco is definitely a nuisance. Do not try to chase him unless you can tell he is in danger, his speed and ability to make a comeback in tough situations makes him a powerful counter. Just play it safe with him.
Skarner
Difficulty
Favors You
Skarner isn't a very powerful jungler to begin with, and he won't have much of a threat on you when you're doing well.
Trundle
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Trundle is pretty dangerous. With ability to have the upper hand in a melee situation, he can counter you pretty well, especially when fed, but as long as you play it safe and surprise him in a fight, you can get the kill.
Vi
Difficulty
Favors You
Vi is pretty powerful in the jungle, but you can easily counter her. Landing your Q will mean everything in a fight like this.
Warwick
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Warwick has a nasty ult that can really cleave your health bar. Avoiding him is a good idea when you know his ult is available. Other than that you can get the upper hand quickly.
Zac
Difficulty
Favors You
Zac has this annoying trait of not wanting to die. Put him down and keep him down as quickly as you can, landing your Q to slow him will help a lot.

Early Game

Get some assistance and grab blue, always your first thing to do. then proceed to clear the grey wraith, then wolves, wraiths, then red, then golems. Make your way back through and continue to clear until you get blue and red a second time, land a gank around this time, or earlier if necessary. You should have enough gold to make your first recall and buy your first few items. Next work on clearing and ganking until you have enough to get Nashor's.

Mid Game

After getting Nashor's keep your clear going as you make your way between lanes, ganking where your allies need it, and at this point, if the other jungler isn't too much of a threat you may want to consider stealing their buffs and warding some key points in there jungle, such as red or blue, or points where allies may be ganked.

Late Game

At this point you shouldn't be focused on the jungle as much, except for your buffs, but they are not priority anymore. Keeping your allies safe and ganking the weak enemies is your goal at this point, stealing buffs is another good idea when your team isn't threatened, it will keep the enemy's jungler starved.

Teamfights

In team fights your main role is tanking and finishing enemies. Getting good with your Q will give you a huge advantage in team fights. Save your R for the enemy team's biggest threat, as it will take a huge chunk of their health away, giving your team the upper hand. Your E will definitely be useful here because it will be damaging multiple enemies on the other team.

Conclusion

AP Jungle Cho'Gath is overall, a very high threat play style. You can counter plenty of junglers and do insane damage in team fights. Your ganks will be very high tier, as landing your Q will ensure death of the enemy being ganked. Just follow this guide, and adjust as you may want, if you find something you may want to change about the guide that may suit you better, feel free, this is what has worked, and will work for me.

Not bad. I'd say you should probably downgrade fiddlesticks one skull, so long as you put one point in your W at early levels you have two ways of interrupting his drain, so he can't duel you. Out of interest, is it purely the mana issues that keep you from taking an early point in your W? I'm also interested why you pick up Thornmail instead of Frozen Heart. FH would give you 20% more CDR (for a total of 40%, give almost as much armour, and give a 20% attack speed debuff to your enemies, helping you stay alive longer. Given that every AD champ is likely to buy lifesteal (or be tanky), Thornmail seems a little lackluster in this build. Other than that, nice job on the guide.
