Introduction

I made a strawpoll on my stream asking which champion you would like me to make a guide on next, Syndra was the most requested. So here I am, making a Syndra guide. I have played Syndra for a really long time, I started playing her back when she was released. She was really gimmicky and felt slow to play when she was released, but with some patches Riot made her really nice to play. What really inspired me to play Syndra was Invoker from Dota. He had 3 balls around him like Syndra, and was the highest skillcap champion in Dota. I also felt how high Syndras skillcap was, so I felt like they were a lot alike. Syndra is a really versatile champion. You can destroy early game, or just play safe and scale into lategame. She can burst a target down in a teamfight, or focus on stunning as many people as possible. Syndra is a lot of fun and you can always get better at her, she's a good pickup if you are looking for a champion you can always improve at. I hope you will enjoy reading my Syndra guide :D I would like to apologise beforehand for my grammar, I'm glad you are understanding!

Runes

Starting from the Marks. Magic pen is just the best, the only other thing I would consider is hybrid pen. Hybrid pen makes your autoattacks stronger early game, and can be useful in close range matchups. I prefer Magic pen in every situation purely because of the scaling. Armor yellows are a must have, I don't really see a reason to not go armor. It's safe, helps with trades, makes you harder to gank. Magic resist if you are against a magic damage dealer in lane, or if they have a lot of magic damage elsewhere. It's just really safe and let's you win trades in lane. I like MR runes where others like AP more, I go AP/lvl against Physical damage dealers in lane. AP Quints are really straight forward. Syndra is a burst mage, and the more ap, the more damage. It helps her make her strong early game even stronger. If you are having trouble positioning with Syndra, you can go Movement speed quints instead.

I use this page in every situation, it's just overall really good on Syndra. In offense I pretty much get everything that will provide me with more damage, penetration or CDR. I don't like spell Weaving because I wont be autoattacking a lot during my combo. Expose Weakness is simply because there really is nothing else good to get, and it helps your team. If you have trouble lasthitting/farming you can get Butcher instead. In utillity I prefer movement speed over mana regen. The increased range on trinket items don't help much since we will be getting the ward trinket item most games. The ward trinket already has the same range as wards, so I don't feel like it's needed to use a point to get slightly more range. Next tier is pretty self explanatory, Strength of Spirit is not that good Syndra. Most builds on Syndra you don't get a lot of flat mana, and by the point you do the hp regen wont be helpful anyway. In the third tier you can get Culinary Master instead of Runic Affinity if you don't think you will be getting a lot of blue buffs, or if you just don't like taking blue buffs. Some mids prefer handing it over to the jungler instead, and just play safe.

Summoner Spells

Flash & Ignite
I think these are must have summoners on Syndra. On other APs I will sometime go barrier or something else defensive, but on Syndra both flash and ignite are the best. Flash is really good for the obvious reasons. Syndra is a champion who naturally has no escapes, so being able to flash out when you get jumped is good. Flash is just a must have. Ignite is good together with Syndras high burst, and you can get kills in lane easily with Ignite. Ignite has about the same range as your ult, so you can often use them together for high burst/surprise.

Item Builds

Ring start

The dorans ring start is good on Syndra. It provides her with everything she needs, health to win duels, AP for more damage and kill potential and mana regen to spam your spells aggressively. Every once in a while I will get flask against Kassadin or other few matchups, but 95% of games I will go Dorans Ring on Syndra. Just an overall strong start on Syndra.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
This is the item build I end up having in almost all my games. All of the items are just really good on Syndra, and I would want to have these items every game. The only reason I wouldn't get these exact items would be because I needed some defense item such as Quicksilver Sash/Guardian Angel. Starting with Athenes. Athenes is a solid item on Syndra, it gives you the mana regen Syndra needs, she has decent many costs but you use her Q every 2-3 seconds so the mana cost quickly adds up. It also providses her with CDR, I like CDR on Syndra since she has no escapes, so your W and E are up more often to be used defensively if you are trying to get away. Deathcap and Void staff are self explanatory, damage and penetration is good on all mages. Zhonyas is a good defensive item once you learn how to time it well. It can save you from some really deadly spells. Even against Magic damage dealers sometimes Zhonyas is better than an MR item since you can go immune against some of their big damage spells like an enemy Syndras ult for example. Deathfire Grasp is a crazy burst item, use DFG, press R, and see people disappear. The reason I go deathcap over DFG is because I like the overall damage better, and I delay my Deathcap too much by buying it after Athenes. Just my personal preferance, you can buy DFG after Athenes if you like that more, both are good options.
Build Order

This is my general build order. Athenes is a really good item to get first on many champs. Chalice is a solid item for your laning phase, MR is good against most mid lane champions, and the mana regen is good for farming/harrassing. After that I mostly get Deathcap/Void, but sometimes I get Zhonyas earlier. It differs a lot when to get Zhonyas, but never get it before Athenes. In some games you wont need it untill your very last item, and some games you need it right after Athenes. If I don't feel like it's completely nessecary, I try to get Deathcap and Voidstaff first. The sheer damage output of Athenes/Deathcap/Void is just insane and you'll be able to shred both tanks and carries. Deathfire Grasp as my last item most games, some people like getting this item after Athenes. I don't like getting DFG after Athenes since it either delays my Deathcap or magic penetration, if you like getting it after Athenes though that is up to you. I read up the math and just having boots + Athenes + DFG will give more damage than boots + Athenes + Deathcap, but once you get Void staff or more AP items I think Deathcaps damage surpass.

Situational Items

Quicksilver Sash
Quicksilver Sash is a good situational item for all champions in the game in my opinion. It's really good against champions like Zed/Fiddle and ofcourse Malzahar and Warwick. In some games this item can really make or break the game, it's important you get it if they have heavy CC, that you can cleanse out of! Never buy QSS before buying Athenes. Remember this item also works against summoner spells!
Mercury's Treads
Mercs are good if the enemy team has a lot of CC and not just a couple of really hard CCs where QSS would be better. Mercs are just overall really good against champs like Annie/Fiddle too, helps with their heavy damage and CC. If you get mercs early in a lane against Annie e.g. it can work wonders.
Tear of the Goddess
I usually get Tear if I am against a physical damage mid laner since the MR from Athenes wont benefit me at all. You can still get Athenes versus an AD mid, if they have a lot of magic damage elsewhere. Athenes upgrades into Archangel/Seraphs which is an incredibly strong late game item that together with Deathcap gives you a ton of AP. I used to build Tear in every game, but Chalice is much better if you are against an AP mid, so stick to building this item in AD matchups.
Guardian Angel
Guardian Angel is good in those games where having Zhonya or QSS is just not enough. It can really be a life saver, and is good against reset champions like Kha'Zix or Katarina. You will most likely get this as your 6th item and in some cases 5th. Guardian Angel makes people focus you less, just because you have the item and the fancy aura around you, so it gives you a lot more freedom to play in some games.
Sight Ward
Always buy wards! they save lives!! If you have both sides of mid warded, you can play extremely aggressive and deny/kill the enemy mid laner, so remember to buy wards! In the early laning phase I often prioritize 2 health pots then wards, so as long as you have 2 potions in your inventory you should be spending money on atleast 2 wards. Sight Wards together with the ward totem will help keep you safe!
Liandry's Torment
Liandrys is really situational but is good in some games where they have really big tanks that you need to burn through. If they have 2-3 tanks stacking resistances and health, it is a good idea to get this on top of your void staff for massive penetration.

This the skill order I use every single game now. For the longest time I used to max W second, but after the recent E buff, I think it's better to max E second. I get Q level one for obvious reasons, it's a low cooldown, high damage spell which is great for trading. I like having E level 2 for the surprise stun, you can either set up ganks, trade or escape ganks really well using the stun. Maxing Q is by far the best choice, it's just a really strong spell. Afterwards you have 2 options. I think maxing W second is fine aswell, it's really up to what you prefer. After the E buff I started trying to max E second and I am really liking it. I feel like I die less maxing E second, since I have my defensive spell up more often, and I can use my stun/knockback defensively when the cooldown is lowered. Of course level Syndras ult whenever possible.

Skills

Transcendent
Syndras passive is nothing too great, but definitely not bad either. Once you get level 9 your Qs will start to do massive damage. Also another reason why I max E second now is the passive effect where the width is bigger. After using your ult, your E width will now be big enough to knockback all the balls from your ult into a massive AoE stun.
Dark Sphere
Syndras Q is honestly what makes the champion, it's her bread and butter skill. It's a low cooldown, high damage skill. It's good for trading, poking, farming and it has good synergy with the rest of her kit. Always max Q first.
Force of Will
This spell has a lot of uses. It has longer range that Q, so you can poke someone in lane if he is hugging his tower, this is often what I use it for in lane. It's good for kiting, stealing jungle camps such as wraiths, red buff or blue buff, by throwing it over the wall. I feel like it can sometimes be gimmicky if you use it around the same time as you ult the target, and the minion/ball you pick up wont be able to be throwed again. So be careful using this at the same time as your ult, unless you pick something up that is not too close to the target you have just ulted. You can use this on many champion spells like Zyras plants, Heimerdingers turrets etc.
Scatter the Weak
Syndras E is a really cool skill. It is often used together with her Q for the stun. After the recent buff to this spell you can now use Q and E right after each other and get the stun, whereas before the E would be just a little too short. This is why I felt like the buff was needed for a long time, because in some way it's kinda like a quality of life buff more than a straight up buff. Scatter of the Weak is insanely good to use right after you have used your ult, since you will have atleast around 5 balls on the ground, and you can do a massive AoE stun in a teamfight. This is really hard to pull off, but you will learn it with practice. It's a great spell for kiting, setting up ganks, avoiding ganks, catching people off guard, waveclearing and sieging. Just an overall good spell which is why I max it second.
Unleashed Power
Syndras ult is what people often refer to as "Press R and he will die." But it's not always as easy as that. Often when I catch people I have the oppurtunity to use my ult right away, but if I wait half a second I will have another ball from either my Q or my W. Remember that every ball on the ground will count as another ball in your ult, and will greatly increase the damage. Something I found myself doing often when I was new at Syndra was to blow all my spells and my ult instantly, but if you are patient with your ult and wait for your balls to land on the ground, your burst will be a lot higher. You can use your ult on the closest target in a teamfight to get balls on the ground, then follow it up with Scatter of the Weak so do an AoE stun. You will eventually learn when you want to be doing as much damage to a single target as possible, and when you want to utillize the big AoE stun. I am still learning this too, it is extremely hard to know in the moment. Syndras ult can be used on both tanks and carries in teamfights. It really depends what you want to be doing. Sometimes it's really good to just blow up their tank, and then proceed to kill the rest of their team, some other times it's better to hold onto it untill you get a chance to blow up one of their carries. This is another thing that comes with experience. Syndra is all about experience, practice her a lot and you will become a Syndra god!

Champion Matchups - I will mostly be explaining hard/skill matchups since Syndra wins most matchups.

Fizz
Difficulty
Favors You
Playing against Fizz is hard as Syndra. You can almost never ult him. You need to stay at 100% health at all times, so have potions ready. This matchup you win by poking, he wins by all-in. But if you have 1-2 dorans rings and chalice he cannot kill you from full health, so as long as you have high health he cannot kill you. Once you have chalice + blue buff you need to spam your Qs on him, if he uses his playful trickster to farm you must take advantage of it and punish him hard. I feel fairly confident playing this matchup, but I have never played it against a pro fizz player. If he initiates using his Q, try to cancel it with your E. If you are inexperienced as Syndra you can go barrier in this matchup.
Kassadin

Kassadin is a really hard one for Syndra. The only way to really win this matchup is to beat him before 6... HARD! If you don't manage to get a kill on Kassadin before he hits 6 you are gonna have a hard time, I recommend getting Merc Threds against him since his silence really messes with you. Try to avoid picking Syndra if Kassadin is open or if he is already picked, this is the only matchup where I dislike playing Syndra. Syndra is good at setting up ganks though, so if you can have your jungler wait and stun Kassadin when he jumps forward, you can set up a kill really well.
Kayle

Oh kayle... If you find yourself playing a lot of Syndra and maybe even firstpicking her in some games. Eventually you will have to meet this winged angel thing. She is a pain to play against. You have to be super patient with your ultimate. Basically her ult completely nullifies yours and has a lower cooldown, aint that fun? The thing is that you win trades if none of you use your ultimates. So keep trading without going all in, and push her down. Kayle lacks pushing power so she can easily be pushed down. Just be really patient with your ult and sometimes blow your ignite without ulting to see if she will use her ult. When you use Ignite, Kayles will often think you are gonna all-in with your ult and pop her own ult on herself, then kite her till it's down and kill her. This is pretty much the only way to kill Kayle in lane pre 6.
Olaf

Here are two junglers I really dislike playing against as Syndra. Olafs ult is insanely good against Syndra since she relies on kiting and positioning. None of that matters when this viking pops his ult and ghosts and runs at you. I try to pick something else than Syndra if they have Olaf since he will simply destroy you in a teamfight, it's a matter of who kills who first. It's not impossible to play, but I heavily dislike it.
Riven
Difficulty

This matchup is a lot like Zed, but easier. Make sure not to waste your stun, or get too close so she can jump to you. If you play safe and don't waste your stun you should slowly win this lane, Syndra is great against Riven in teamfights since she will blow up before she gets to do anything. Just play really safe and you will be stronger than her eventually.
Vi
Difficulty

Here's another jungle I don't like playing against. In general VI is just good against no mobillity mages. If you find yourself facing why, it's a good idea to get Zhonyas as your 2-3 major item. As soon as she hits 6 you need to play safe as long as her ult is up, and she's good against you in teamfights. Playing against VI is really hard, but there are ways to come around it such as Zhonyas and cancelling her Q using your E. I recommend either banning her or picking something else if she is already picked.

This matchup is extremely skilled. It's all about the skillshots. Be careful not to use your ult if he is capable of ulting you at the same time, since it will completely nullify your ultimate. You have to play smart in this matchup and constantly spam your Qs on him whenever possible. Don't use your stun on creeps because he will take advantage of you not having your E up. If you can get tear and seekers and not use your stun on creeps you should be set in this matchup, but be careful! A good tip is to buy Zhonyas early.

What do you think about starting with a bottle against Fizz? You said in the guide that we must be always full hp against him, and with the bottle start gives a lot of sustain on the lane? Is that start good? Btw, i really love Syndra and this guiide help me to practice her. Thanks Bjerg!

Finally there is an Bjergsen Syndra Guide.
I love playing Syndra since release and Bjergsen was the first player I've seen playing just incredibly good with her. I've become a big fan of him just because of seeing his godlike plays with this champion.

My general build is pretty much the same. But it's interesting to see Bjergsen is maxing E over W and I also would like to know why. It is just because of the Cooldown-Reduction or the larger range once you hit max Rank on this ability? W has the better AP Ratio tho.

Can you add matchups against Swain, Ahri, Gragas, Orianna, and Diana? I play more Diana than Syndra, and I notice that as soon as Diana hits 6 its a lot worse for Syndra.

For Jostre 2 (Why would you max E over W?)

E and W have very similar damage scaling on leveling (at level 1 E starts 10 lower, but gains 5 more per level, both having 160 base damage at 3, and then E pulling ahead at 4 and 5.)
This comes more into perspective in that E covers a much wider AoE (including the orbs it launches, which again, is Bjergsen's favorite teamkiller.)
E's cooldown is reduced by 1.5 seconds for every level put into it, W's cooldown is reduced by a second for every point put into it, and again has the aspect of the hard CC pushback.
Transcendence (Passive); the passive bonus of E (25% width increase) is much stronger than W's (Slow duration increased to 2 seconds), especially for the ult E stuns (going back to this again.) Allowing you to hit more orbs, more easily, into the face of your enemies.
Finally, leveling E over W means less missed damage if you decide to use your W for the utility or resetting an orb's cooldown for ult.

For Jostre (Why would you max E over W?)

There are a number of reasons
1) No mana cost increase. Even rushing towards Athene's you can have mana issues in lane with a spammy champion like Syndra.
2) Cooldown lowering of E could be considered stronger than W; a hard CC pushback is a better excape (seeing as she is missing one) than a stronger slow.
3) Less scaling. W has a .7 AP ratio, while E has a .4; the higher ratio makes W a stronger skill by itself, without levels, for damage, while E would fall off much quicker with its lower ratio.
4) Bjergsen spoke often about using his RE AoE stun in teamfights; maxing E second leaves this as a stronger skill for doing this in early teamfights.
