Introduction

Hello, my name is RighteousRuff and I want to give some credit to Shy for using this build in OGN and multiple other pros and players that have picked up Tankgar in the past. I take a lot of influence of his build here and also I use past builds of what Tankgar/bruiser Rengar used to be played as. I know right now the most popular way to play Rengar was to build full damage and kill the back line marksman, but even with nerfs to Rengar I feel you can get the same results and be a tanky beast late game with just as much damage!

Summoner Sets

Ignite & Flash
These are your main summoners for almost every top lane and is really no different for Rengar. Ignite creates pressure and makes killing your lane opponent more likely while Flash is good as an escape or a surprise engage/gap-closer.
Ignite & Ghost
This summoner set with ghost is pretty solid too. You don't get the instant gap-closer of flash but it can help with chasing. I prefer flash over ghost though simply because your ultimate will give you a pretty significant speed boost on a much lower cool-down then ghost.
Teleport & Exhaust
Both of these summoners are only to be picked situationally. Teleport creates pressure around the map but you lose lane control, and exhaust is nice for dueling and certain match-ups only such as Vayne or anyone dependent on move-speed or attack-speed.

If you are facing a ranged or opponent that you will struggle with in lane then definitely pick up the Dorian's shield and a vamp scepter for the sustain in lane. If you're facing a melee match-up or a match-up you feel confident in then I suggest the long sword and pots. The long sword was recently buffed to allow 3 pots and gives a lot more sustain the the new Dorian's blade. If you are ever Duo-lane or playing support Rengar pick up the Relic and upgrade it to a Targon's, it provides good hp and the passive gives you and your team A LOT OF GOLD!

Standard Final Items
This is just a standard build but depending on your match-up and how the game is progressing this build order might be different for you however you mostly want all these items. There are only a few I might switch out but I'll explain those in detail in the situational items.

*If I'm behind in a lane I tend to purchase an early vamp scepter for sustain and build that into a Hyrdra instead of buying the Bonetooth Necklace*
Build Order
A lot of the order of this build can be flipped around, including if you are facing an AP top lane you should rush Spectre's Cowl and Merc Treds before you pick up a Sunfire cape. Also picking up a Vamp scepter can help with sustain and damage early, then making it a BOTRK or a Hydra later is a good replacement for the Bonetooth Necklace. Just dont forget about your boots, trinket, boot upgrades, and if really rich extra elixirs.

Situational Items

Frozen Heart
This is your replacement for the Randuin's Omen. If their marksman is stacking Attack Speed or if multiple champs are stacking attack speed this item is a lot better then the Randuin's. Otherwise I prefer Randuin's for the extra Hp and the active.
Ravenous Hydra
I usually only pick this item up if I'm behind in lane and need to purchase an early vamp scepter for sustain. It provides good wave clear and a lot of AOE damage. Good for split pushing and synergies nicely with Trinity Force. I'd probably rush a vamp and then finish after my TF is done, or if I need the extra AOE in team fights.
Blade of the Ruined King
Same as the Hydra only pick up if I'm behind in lane or IF THE WHOLE TEAM IS STACKING HP. This item is very good against high HP targets and synergies well with Trinity Force for split pushing if your team is losing team-fights.
Banshee's Veil
When Spirit Visage just isn't enough MR to win the game or you got a pesky Karthas ult to deal with, getting a Banshee's is always a good pickup and replacing the Randuin's for it. All depends on whoever is fed but I still find this item just not as good as Spirit Visage because of how well Visage synergies with Rengar but in the end it's all preference.
Hexdrinker
Good item to rush if losing lane vs AP/or facing a team with multiple AP enemies. Also a good replacement for banshee's if Spirit Visage isn't enough and you need more damage.
Thornmail
Very situational item however stacked with a Randiuan's Omen against a high AD team this item is amazing. So if facing all AD a good item to pick up instead after your Sunfire and Omen.
Ninja Tabi
Not bad boots for lane and mid game but if the team has too much CC you'll probably want to purchase Merc Treds.

I start with Bola Strike for poke and to gain lane dominance. Then you'll want to max your Battle Roar for max sustain in lane or you could also put a few points in Bola Strike for more poke. Try to use Battle Roar while near your opponent and a few creeps to get the maximum damage and return health. There are times when maxing your Bola Strike first can be good but only do this if you need more poke or need the CC (Crowd Control). The reason why we don't max Savagery till last is because you won be getting your Trinity Force till later on so by then you will be maxing Savagery and the damage will follow your tankyness and make you a late game BEAST!

Skills

Unseen Predator
RANGE: 600 (750 with 9 stacks on Bonetooth Necklace)

This is a very useful passive and can come in handy for gap-closing and creating kills for yourself and your teammates when combined with your Bola Strike. Now with the change in top lane from 2 to 3 brushes this is a big buff to Rengar's passive and allows for more outplays against your opponents.
Savagery
Savagery is a good damage ability late game but early on Tankgar is only really good for stacking your Ferocity. Otherwise its a decent amount of damage and will eventually scale very well into late game which is why we max it last.
Battle Roar
Battle Roar and Empowered Battle Roar are your main source of sustain and most of your damage. You want to max this first and you will see the damage combine really well with your Sunfire Cape and Spirit Visage. This ability also provides good wave clear and helps keeps lanes pushed.
Bola Strike
Bola Strike is a very underrated skill and I sometimes will max this first depending on my lane opponent. Bola Strike provides good poke so you should be throwing this whenever it's up ether at your opponent or to get CS in the back lines that are to dangerous to overextend for. Bola Strike and Empowered Bola Strike also set-up good ganks for your jungler or is good for chasing opponents down with your team.
Thrill of the Hunt
Very good ultimate and very useful in many situations. As Tankgar this can be a great way to engage and start a fight for your team as well as being a great way to escape while at low hp/split pushing/dueling. Just be warned it has flaws and if used while being attacked it will take a few seconds before you go invisible.

Renekton is very tricky and can out damage you with his empowered abilities in a straight up fight and sustain just like yourself. However if you properly manage your cool-downs you can do small fights to lower his hp then back off and do this multiple times. Just be careful of his ult do not fight him when he ults unless you're sure you can kill him.

Hard lane, avoid damage from his flame spitter, dont fight him head on when he is overheating, wait for jungler help.

Very easy to lane with max Bola Strike and spam it at him every time its up. When he's slowed attack him a little more also if he flings you attack him while you walk back to safety. Keep sustaining with empowered Battle Roar and you should be fine.

Big sustain battle all depends on the jungler of each team and who gets the better gank. Tankgar can outplay Vlad just be careful of being kited. Otherwise If your unable to burst him down with your jungler just out-farm him and wait till late game when you out-scale him or roam.

Early Game

Depending on your match-up/opposing player you might be able to play more aggressive, however playing safe and controlling lane dominance while farming shows really good success and using both sustain from Battle Roar and poking with Bola Strike gaining lane dominance is pretty easy as Tankgar. Just farm it out if behind or if your jungler can come then with Empowered Bola Strike you can setup a nice kill for you. Your basically looking to get your Sunfire ASAP and then to split push or get towers and roam.

Mid Game

After getting you Trinity Force Tankgar gets a HUGE power spike and can literally tank everything and deal a ton of damage. While at the same time healing with his Empowered Battle Roar when needed fighting as Tankgar can also bait opponents into thinking they can kill you until you burst them down while gaining an instant 20 percent of your HP back! Still try to focus on getting towers any way you can by ether taking them after fights or creating pressure through your ability to split-push. Don't forget to keep farming whenever you can you need your items fast and if your not getting farm through split push you'll have to find it in other forms.

Late Game

In late game If your team is doing well stay in your ultimate distance from your team so that you can ether follow up and help your team if they get engaged on or you can engage on the enemy team. Tankgar is both good at diving and peeling for his team. After getting your Bonetooth stacks and Trinity Force you not only will be as tanky as Nasus but deal just as much consistant damage as the fight continues on. Try to drag as much attention away from your carries and make the enemy focus you because they won't kill you, no one can kill Tankgar late game!

Teamfights

Just as mentioned above try to one shot with your team the adc or apc or if you need to peel for your team do so by using your Empowered Bola Strike. If you are in the middle of the fight make sure to spam your abilities to activate your empowered abilities as often as possible. If your being focused being focused use your empowered Battle Roar and you can heal for large chunks and deal more damage. Just keep auto attacking and try to stay close to your enemies to keep your Sunfire Cape damage on them.

Conclusion

This is definitely a work in progress however I feel like this is a really good build and can be used by many in a very easy fashion to help your team be tanky and have lots of utility and damage. Tankgar is good both in lane and in fights/split-pushing and makes him viable at all parts of the game. Just make sure to remember you don't do crazy damage till late game so just play safe and be tanky for your team and you will see success! :) GLHF

Hey you should update your Vlad match-up. Rengar can wreck Vlad early game, forcing him out of lane and taking his tower but if you both reach level 9 with even items he will out-trade and out-sustain you. Vladimir is a late game monster and Rengar DEFINITELY doesn't outscale him, especially in teamfight/5v5 situations. If Vlad manages to build Zhonyas>WOTA>MagPen>Spirit Visage, Tankgar can't 1v1 him. I know this because I played Vlad vs a really good tank Rengar who got first blood on me and I play a lot of top lane with both of these champions.

I understand that Black Cleaver is a solid item and might be a good situational item, but the Bonetooth is probably better because it not only give you the same amount of armor pent at 3 stacks as a Black Cleaver but it also gives other stats special to Rengar such as increased movespeed, around 40 damage at level 18, and increased time on his ult duration and leap distance based on how many stacks you get.

Should be building Cleaver rather than Bonetooth Necklace. Rengar needs armor pene to assassinate carries later in the match.. Plus, Brutalizer can be a good early rush item if you're against a tanky opponent. Bonetooth Necklace is kind of a waste..

Also you could mention E being more beneficial than maxing W if you're against a matchup you can zone easily. Other than that it's a decent guide.

I agree Nasus can be a problem later on in the game you have to juke him and kite him later on but early you should be able to deny him to a point to make him useless. Thank you very much for your comments! :)

Not a bad build that's a work in progress. I would suggest more defensive items in your "situational" item section and just pointing this out, Nasus is a bad matchup for Rengar because there is nothing he can do to force Nasus out of lane. Nasus also scales better late game than Rengar. I would play against every top laner to gain moreatchup experience

I agree I've been testing it more and maxing his bola strike seems to be a good way for free harass and trading but its all preference/match-up in the end. Not sure about ghostblade but i will try testing it out thank you for the post and comments! :) Also about jungle Rengar I think it's completely different then top. In jungle you would build damage over tank while top lane I think Tankgar is very solid depending on the match-up.

I would recommend you trying it before judging, this build is extremely viable and far stronger than you would expect, already won a lot of lanes by playing a similar build, thought i prefer to max E, which is based on personal preferance. @RighteousRuff What do you think about Youmuu's Ghostblade ? I feel like this Item is basically made for Rengar, it offers everything he is based on and allows more effective Splitpushing.

Anyway, good guide, would aprecciate if you could add some more Lane Matchups and a few explanations :)

Rengar shines better in jungle. Like his rival, Kha'zix. Just sayin. First back get bonetooth and madred's razors, then go gank lane with his ultimate. Full combo with double Q follow by E and W could deals 3/4 of the enemy's current health. If can't get kills just get assists for the stacks for bonetooth. In teamfight go aim squishy like APC, ADC nor SUPPRT or the best aim for the lone enemy who's went late into teamfights or he/she at the back of the team. Don't play tanky on rengar, it just a waste for mid/late game Double Q. It's a death combo.

Maxing Rengar's Battle Roar early creates a lot of good damage with this build and when using the Empowered Battle Roar gives Rengar a huge amount of Hp back allowing him to sustain in lane. This build isn't meant to 1 shot your opponent in lane but to sustain in lane and never have to back/blue pill. I also stated in the build that I sometimes max my Bola Strike in order to create more poke for lane dominance over the sustain from Battle Roar.
