Runes

Machete start if you want to farm, if you want to be aggressive in counter jungling/ganking start with a long sword and 3 pots. You have plenty of sustain in the jungle even if you get a crap leash while still being in a great position to duel early/mid game and with some Lifesteal runes that scale well with your final build into late game with a tad bit of much needed MR.

This Mastery Tier is listed as Advanced:

I feel that 27/2/1 is the best of all 3 worlds when it comes to optimizing for Jax's strength's vs. weaknesses, but it takes more mechanical skill to fully take advantage of the advantages.

Offense

Tier 1:
Standard stuff, grab Double-Edged Sword and 3/4 Fury Butcher and Feast are a waste. If they change them to scale throughout the game maybe, but you simply don't need them when you jungle jax.

Tier 2:
Brute Force and Mental Force are really nice along with skipping Expose Weakness . (Since it doesn't really help your damage at all and that 1 point will be spent better later)

Tier 3:
Every single talent in this tier is must have for Jax. With Executioner , Double - Edged Sword and Havoc you have an increased 10% damage to champs when they are 50% or below, when they are above 50% you have a flat 5%. Also when you add spell weaving for one point you get 3% more AP, which stacks with Mental Force , Arcane Mastery and Archmage . In total you'll get around 35 - 40 AP out of those talents. (So a little more AP than a Tri-force gives you).

Tier 4:
Warlord and Dangerous Game are both great talents. Warlord is obvious for the damage bonus, but Dangerous Game is a talent that I recommend you don't over look because you can get 10% - 15% hp back in team fights if you get a few kills and when you turret dive it is a very nice cushion to make it back out alive.

Tier 5:
Frenzy is left out becuase at full build you have 10% crit, not something too reliable for the point. Devastating Strikes is a must along with Arcane Blade as it adds just a bit more damage per auto (around 20).

Havoc ofc.

Defense

Tier 1:
Enchanted Armor 2 Points that give Jax around 13 more MR and 15 more Armor on his ult at max level.

Utility

Tier 1:
Scout 1 point that makes your trinket ward range the exact same as your leap strike range, so you can leap further with just your trinket . Nice for mobility.

Summoner Sets

Ghost & Smite
Ghost and Smite are optimal.
With the new buff to smite you can clear your jungle so much faster and because of objective control you can't give up smite.

Those are really the other choices and while all 4 can work, I advise Ghost . Mainly because in a team fight with the uptime of Ghost and your Leap Strike it really gets rid of all the mobility problems you might have.

Late game you won't need the damage from and is good for trying to steal objectives (Baron/Dragon), but remember! You do have Leap Strike to go over walls and will secure you more kills. You could take Exhaust, but as Jax you will rarely have a problem with 1 v 1 dueling , even against fed opponents.

If you want to try to just farm to your as fast as possible go Machete + 5x but be sure your team knows you plan on farming, not really being too aggressive.

If you want to try to counter jungle and gank a bit more then go with and 3x as it will give you a crazy amount of damage around level 2 - 3 on your ganks / dueling. Also chose this if you want to skip a spirit item and go straight into a . (More on that later)

Think long term on Jax though he scales so well late game don't be afraid to farm a bit early even if your lanes are losing you alone can turn the game around later.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
With Life Steal Quints, , and has 40% Life Steal and 24% Spell Vamp. Translation is every 3rd attack ( with up) you Life Steal / Spell Vamp about 400 HP. Also remember that stacks with so if you manage to get a killing blow off you get another huge heal.

Effective Health is what we want to talk about here with this build, that is, you have enough HP, MR and Armor while your is up (8 Seconds) to sustain yourself through the enemies damage with your own damage. 250 MR, 300 Armor 3k HP and the damage/sustain of a hyper-carry can easily net you a kill in a team fight (Proc'ing - Even more sustain) and you can usually chase the rest of the team down to finish them off if needed. I don't pick up or at this point because the GA isn't needed (You shouldn't be getting insta-bursted in a team fight). And you have enough effective HP without so the is a much better choice for sustain and sticking to targets.

However adaptability is the name of the game, so if that Fed AP Caster is 1 shotting you or something crazy then a might be worth the investment over the .
Build Order
Nab item early if you want to farm and really really punish objectives (Dragon/Baron/Red and Blue buffs) and sell it late game for the .

If you just want to get strong and carry faster through mid game SKIP the and just go - > OR - > . With recent changes to PBE and the Machete items though it would be much better for your team to pick up a spirit item.

Boots are preference, basically tenacity vs non tenacity. Getting heavy CC'd to death? , if not then roll with .

Situational Items

Frozen Heart
Frozen heart isn't really needed for anything but an exceptionally fed hyper-carry like / late game. Even then I would argue that would still have you winning the duel esp with your . I'd leave this item for your Tank/Support if really needed.
Frozen Mallet
Frozen Mallet can seem like a great item for Jax, sticking on targets, tankiness and such but late game Jax doesn't need this item and does a much better job.
Ravenous Hydra
If you want to split push then pick this up, otherwise 100% of the time.
Youmuu's Ghostblade
Youmuu's math's out to kill squishies faster than any other final item except for IE, but tbh you really don't need to kill someone in 3 seconds instead of 3.5 but it can be useful for split pushing objectives if needed.
Infinity Edge
IE hands down has the most damage of any item you can pick for your 6th slot, but once again the Lifesteal and Active from is worth so much more in team fighting than s damage is. Kill something in 3 seconds instead of 3.5? Trade off 15% Life Steal and active. You decide.

Farming - First Second

If you get a decent leash at blue get Q second, if you get a bad leash get W second. The reasoning is because if you are afraid of being invaded at red by their jungler you can drop your trinket right after blue and jump over the wall saving you 3 seconds on the way to red. If you get a bad leash though you won't clear red as fast with Q so you will take more damage. (about 65 more damage, not too much). If you get a bad leash at blue though then you might need to take W just to survive the red camp clear easier.

If you want a lower CD on empower so you can clear the jungle faster then this is the way to go.

Skills

Relentless Assault
Basic attacks increase Jax's attack speed by 4% / 6% / 8% / 10% / 12% / 14%. Relentless Assault lasts for 2.5 seconds and stacks up to 6 times for a maximum of 24% / 36% / 48% / 60% / 72% / 84%.

ACTIVE: Jax leaps to target unit, dealing physical damage if the target is an enemy.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+ 60% AP) (+ 100% bonus AD)

COOLDOWN: 7 / 6 / 5 / 4 / 3 COST: 30 MANA
ACTIVE: Jax's next basic attack or Leap Strike within the next 10 seconds deals additional magic damage. Empower resets the autoattack timer.
MAGIC DAMAGE: 40 / 75 / 110 / 145 / 180 (+ 60% AP)

Counter Strike
RANGE: 187.5 COOLDOWN: 18 / 16 / 14 / 12 / 10 COST: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 MANA
ACTIVE: For up to 2 seconds, Jax dodges all basic attacks and takes 25% less damage from area of effect abilities. At the end of the duration or if Counter Strike is activated again, Jax deals physical damage and stuns nearby enemies for 1 second. This spell deals 20% additional damage for each attack dodged to a maximum of 100% increased damage.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 (+ 50% bonus AD)
MAX DAMAGE: 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 (+ 100% bonus AD)

Grandmaster's Might
COOLDOWN: 80 COST: 100 MANA
PASSIVE: Jax deals additional magic damage on every third basic attack. The counter will reset if he does not attack for 2.5 seconds.
MAGIC DAMAGE: 100 / 160 / 220 (+ 70% AP)
ACTIVE: Jax gains bonus armor and magic resistance for 8 seconds.
ARMOR: 25 / 35 / 45 (+ 30% bonus AD)
MAGIC RESIST: 25 / 35 / 45 (+ 20% AP)

Early Game

Focus on farming your Gunblade and getting a solid gank or two off. If not then no worries just farm.

Mid Game

Don't try to 1v1 too much until you finish Gunblade. After Gunblade and Tri Force you can solo anyone except super fed AP's so careful there.

Late Game

Really work on positioning in team fights to beat down a carry or beat down someone diving your ADC you pick. Remember you have 8 seconds to be awesome.

Teamfights

Teamfights your job is to kill something super fast OR protect your carry. You pick.

Conclusion

Jax excel's in carrying late game hard, don't be afraid if you get behind early with good team fighting you can easily come back and almost carry the game by yourself. Remember 8 seconds you have to be awesome.
