Introduction

Greetings! My name is DevinIsFTL and I am a long time player (3 years now, Season 1 When had just came out) and ever since I started play league of legends, I fell in love with the lovable lisping lunk know as Dr. Mundo. So without further ado, here it is, my very first guide :D

Mundo was the first champion I ever bought, And from levels ~3/4-30 I played nothing but Dr.Mundo (cept when new champions came out, then i tried them and went right back to Mundo) So I am very confident in my Mundo play, As far as ranking goes, I am gold V but this is mainly due to only ever getting enough ELO for the rewards at the end of seasons. As i mainly play normal (Blind/Draft) games.

Runes

These are the runes I feel that Mundo's Early game dominance is maximized due to his incredible AD Steroid, The Flat HP Quints befit him amazingly as they scale with his passive and his ultimate, not to mention the extra tank helps to prevent level 2 cheese from popular picks such as ,, and all the better.

4 Utility
Here is where I see the vast majority of Dr.Mundo's New found power in Season 4. The new defensive tree seems like it was almost designed with Dr.Mundo's kit in mind, While there are many different ways to distribute Mundo's points, but i believe that 99.99999998% of the time this set up will give you optimum power and overall well rounded strenghts at all stages of the game

Summoner Sets

Ghost & Ignite
Summoner spells on Dr. Mundo are a almost always going to be two of five options.
Typically when I am going into a blind pick i will run ghost and ignite. Ghost provides you with a shorter cooldown escape and engage than flash that is synergistic with your ultimate, While Ignite gives you even greater kill potential in lane and the ability to just man-mode dive carrys later in the game.

Sometimes i will substitute in Exhaust for ignite, or Flash for ghost. and very rarely.
I run heal and ignite Together for maximum ham, but this i do not recommend until you are VERY comfortable with mundo and understand his baiting potential with his ult.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
This is by far and away the best item choices on Dr.Mundo Right now, The passive regen you get from your and masteries, passive, and on top of D-Shield make its a superb starting item choice.

Possibly getting rejuv beads or a ruby crystal are options, but are vastly outclassed by doran's shield.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
My overall complete build for Dr. Mundo will always look something like this. (Boots are interchangeable between Ninja Tabi and Mercs dependent on situation, but for this guide I put swiftness as if you are ever preposterously fed and looking to hard carry a game. these are in my opinion the way to go.)

All items should be purchased as the need arises, Spirit visage or sunfire should always be top priority as the power spike Mundo gets with both of these items is HUUUUUUUGE.

Now i know some people out there are tilting there head thinking "Atmas? what is this Season 2!" But hear me out, in the end game with this item build and Mundo's E, he can easily break 300+ AD that crits, making him one of the scariest carry divers in the game, As once the item is complete, Mundo's mixed damage will be off the friggin chain!

Situational Items

Frozen Mallet
Very nice if you end up VS a particularly slippery foe, but you should not be missing cleavers so buying this item is often overkill.

(IF BOUGHT, REPLACE ATMAS. You will lose a lot of damage but will be nearly un-peel-able later game.
Thornmail
Since mundo gets so much from a few stats, It is not as efficient as other item purchases but it has its place, that pesky Cait or jinx keep pecking at you? This will more than do the trick. I saw Shy getting it and OGN and thought I would give my opinion on the item.

(Keep in mind, that shy was VS a Tryndamere in the game he got this, So take that as you will)
Liandry's Torment
An AMAZING damage item on Dr. Mundo, Whats good with %damage? Much much more %Damage thats what!

I leave this item under Situational items as I feel that mundo does plenty of damage with his kit and benefits much more from direct tank/bruiser items.

(Get only if you are going to get Sorc Shoes and carry with mad cleaver skillz)

Skills

Adrenaline Rush
Simple and amazing passive, really starts to show how good it is in the later game but is still noticeable early.
All in all, Great skill
Infected Cleaver
Mundo isnt Mundo without his (IMPO) OP cleavers, A decent % of current life nuke that slows for 40% at all ranks for 2s. Very very strong as the range is bigger than most think and can be chained with it self to be an amazing kiting, chasing, sniping, and last hitting tool.

Mundo's #1 skill always max first always always always always!
Burning Agony
A sunfire at level 1? Hot diggidy this skill can add up to HUGE sustained AoE damage. But what is most important about this skill is that it gives free tenacity as well as giving mundo the wave clear he needs to split push in the mid-late game.
Masochism
This skill is always taken at level 2 as popping this skill with only 1 rank in it gives you a 40 bonus AD. Thats 10 less ad than a free BF sword at level 2! So needless to say the level-2-all-in-ham-and-cheese-slamwich that a mundo can give is actually REALLY scary. not to mention that the AD you get scales with your % missing HP.

Of all of mundo's skills, i think that this one is the weakest in terms of combination with his kit as a whole, thus leaving this skill to be maxed last.
Sadism
Hoooooooooooo Nelly the things I should not have done. yet pulled off thanks to this ultimate, When this skill is activated, Mundo will start to regenerate a MASSIVE amount of HP and gain a better-than-ghost ghost...This coupled WITH ghost gives mundo amazing engage, chase, escape, baiting, and just man-mode capabilities. Always rank this skill up when available.

A word to the wise, It can become very easy to overestimate your tankiness with ult on, But if you try and use ultimate when low you are still prone to being bursted down in the early and mid game portions of the game. but later on with a near full item build, it will take nothing short of teams dumpster-ing you to kill you through ult. Mundo's ult requires some presence of mind to watch for when you are ignited, as an ignited mundo will die extremely fast in a teamfight situation (unless you are just hella buff yo)

FUN-FACT: Mundo keeps healing even if he "dies" but comes back with GA or

Champion Matchups

Garen
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Garen is a annyoing man of a champion as his all in in the early game is much stronger than yours, not to mention the tank buster ultimate of his. when playing VS a garen, NEVER ult at low HP to try and bait unless you are 100% sure he has no ultimate, and even then, dont get ignited and bursted with Q+E.

Kiting garen is sort of an option, but smart use of Garen's Q will nix those plans. so try and bait it out then cleaver him.
Leesin
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Lee sin has all the tools he needs to deal with Dr. Mundo. In built sustain, Kite potential with his E slow. and most importantly, Strong disengage with his ultimate and % execute damage, just the thing HP tanks like mundo hate.

Know this, if a lee sin gets ahead of Dr. Mundo, it can be VERY hard to catch back up.
Vladimir
Difficulty
Favors You
While on paper this match up is in all honesty, rather easy. Your passive regen will sustain you through vlad's lane phase and give you enough time to rush spirit visage, and once you have that vlad's damage will only be a problem if you purposely troll and ignore him. You will out sustain him at nearly every stage of the game with Passive regen and Ultimate.

All in all Dr.Mundo is my preferred S4 Vlad counter.

Early Game

In the early game your job is to just accumulate levels, Dr. Mundo from levels 1-5 is surprisingly weak yet strong at the same bewildering time. the most opportune times for aggression in the lane are when you are chain multiple cleavers and smack them around with E boosted autos. But overall dueling should only ever happen if you can hit a cleaver every time its off CD. so unless they are a skillshot reliant champion, Hiding inside the minion wave will cut your damage to almost nothing.

Mid Game

In the mid game, levels 6-13, Dr. Mundo really starts to come out of his shell, With levels in his ultimate Mundo has the power to man fight nearly any top laner as long as 3 things are not happening, you are not ignited, and you are not VS an opponent who can execute you at low health, and you are not getting kited and missing cleavers.
Once Mundo has his and . he is tanky enough to dive towers and make plays to force enemies off of objectives. You main job in scraps at this level is to peel for the ADC and create pick offs by landing long range cleavers so that people are slowed enough for the team to jump on them and thus secure objectives. Speaking of objectives, Tank some, be they towers or dragon or that rare super early baron.

Late Game

Ahhh here is where mundo becomes a god mode OP tanky MoFo. Your main job, assuming you are NOT the only tank, Is either dive carries, or peel for your own. But assuming you ARE the only tank. dependent on the enemy team comp, if assassin heavy, you must protect the ADC at all costs. If rather bruiser and low peel, DIVE THAT PUNY ADC. A late game Dr. Mundo with the items and i have laid out should only lose a fight to a fed Trist, Kog, or Vayne, Otherwise there is very little threat to yourself from ADCs.

Teamfights

Peel peel peel peel peel peel peel OR Dive dive dive dive dive dive dive.

But in all seriousness, Land cleavers on high (Meaning full HP) targets and just run in such a manner that you can keep as many people as possible inside of your AoE for as long as possible.

Conclusion

And so we close the first guide i have created. All in all Top lane Mundo is a terror right now, and it does my heart a warm and fuzzy feeling on the inside to see my favorite champion outside of the jungle for the first time in a while. :D
