Introduction

Ah Yes, Kassawin. Basically the strongest roaming champion for mid in the game.

Let's list off some pros/cons!

Pros-
Has a silence on a short CD that is a targeted ability, meaning you can't miss.
Has an AOE Nuke with an amazing ratio/base damage + a slow.
Has a short gap closer/escape in the form of his ultimate which allows him to go from point A to B seamlessly, also does a lot of damage.
His W should not be overrated, it basically doubles his auto damage which allows him to CS under turret effectively and gives him mana every time you auto.
Very flexible in his build paths and skill path.
One of the highest or the highest scaling AP Mid in the game.
Dominates Solo Queue.

Cons-
Has mana issues if used incorrectly.
Gets dumpstered in lane by almost everyone and anyone.
Hard to balance roaming/farming on him, need a good understanding of game to make use of Kassadin.

Anyway, moving forward with the guide I'll explain everything I know about him! Please enjoy :D

Runes

In the case you're vs a Riven or Zed that only does AD damage, you would want AP/LvL blues.

For Reds/Yellows/Quints you don't have much other option as these are the best runes in comparison to others on Kassadin.

Normally speaking I don't like to get Dangerous Game in the offence tree, but Kassadin is a clean up champion which can make use of it.

You can also drop Dangerous Game to get 1 point into Spell Weaving, it depends on what you're trying to do on Kassadin.

I like to go 9 points into the Defense tree as that raises his survivibility by an insane amount relative to putting 9 points in the utility tree.
It lets you survive lane phase easier and transition into end game, however if you choose to go 9 points into utility you'll be gaining much need mana regen and shorter summoner spells which are huge on Kassadin.

It's up to you what you want to do, however I prefer 9 points into the defense tree.

Summoner Sets

Teleport & Flash
I personally like to run Teleport and Flash on Kassadin for a few reasons.

1. Once you hit 6, your global map presence is insane due to the enemy team fearing a Kassadin teleport, and no one wants to feed Kassadin.

2. You don't win lane even in the case you run ignite, and that's a spell you would use to win lane. Outside of lane phase you won't need it to finish people off.

3. It is very annoying to play against a teleport kassadin as he WILL out scale you, and if you can't beat them may as well join them!
Ignite & Flash
Ignite is a viable summoner for Kassadin to go, it's not necessary he run teleport and in lower ELOs you can get kills in lane with ignite. However the higher up in ELO you go the harder it is to kill your lane enemy, and you're better off exerting map pressure with teleport.

Still though, ignite has it's uses.

So you have 2 build options, you can either start with a Flask and 3 pots or a Cloth Armor and 5 pots.

Flask 3 Pots-
This is the most standard start as it gives you a lot of sustain, which is much needed and mana regen that you lack from the utility tree.
I recommend starting this against everyone unless you're not used to Kassadin and you're facing a Riven or someone that does an insane amount of AD.

Cloth 5 Pots-
This is a viable start as it will build towards your seekers armguard and gives you a lot more tankiness in the case you're vs an AD Caster mid or what ever. You will run oom with this build however but it does scale nicely, I just don't like it because I never have any mana to do anything with Cloth 5.

Standard Final Items
Alright, I've tried a ton of builds with Kassadin and I've seen a ton of different builds by other pros as Kassadin.
Let's explain why I buy these items.

1. RoA- I buy this because of the sustain it provides in lane, along with the health+mana it adds. It basically makes you super hard to kill early game, and now you're actually able to ultimate onto people without exploding.
2. Hourglass- I buy this because you need to be able to port on top of people, otherwise you run out of mana and you need to land your E on multiple targets. It synergizes greatly with your RoA since it increases your effective health by a lot.
3. Voidstaff- I buy this because by the time you're able to buy this item, people will start having MR such as Negatron cloaks or Spirit Visages and this helps you kill them.
4. Deathcap- I buy DC 4th because by the time you get this item, you already have 3 AP items and it has great synergy with the previous items. Your damage output will be insane once you get DC.
5. Guardians Angel- I buy this last because it's a neccesity, end game if you're able to get this item everyone does a ton of damage. This allows you to port in and kill their ADC/APC and revive, normally you'll be able to ultimate out once you revive and that is a won team fight for you guys.

Boots- I recommend Sorcerer boots as it increases your damage the most, you are able to go Mercury Treads in the case they have a ton of CC. You're extremely slippery if you have mercs, so that is a viable boot option as well.

Situational Items

Seraph's Embrace
This is a viable item, I use to buy it but I found that it takes too long for it to scale and you're extremely squishy/weak until it's complete. It's not guaranteed you get to end game with Kassadin and going one of the previous items ensures that more than Seraphs.
Abyssal Scepter
Since you're ultimating on top of people, the aura is useful and it makes it extremely hard for mages to kill you. I'm not a fan of it with all the AD Junglers/Mids being played.
Doran's Ring
Okay, so early game I usually buy one or two of these, depends on the amount of money I have on my first back. If i have enough for catalyst, I will skip Dorans and just finish that. In the case I have like 900, I'd probably buy two dorans or 1 doran and a ruby crystal.

If you're planning on dragon fighting soon or using your teleport, go with the double dorans, otherwise do 1 doran and 1 ruby crystal.

I max E first since they nerfed Q and buffed E. It allows you to wave clear and your burst is much higher.

Then you max Q after since it's a better option than W.

Skills

Void Stone
You basically take less magic damage and attack faster when you do take magic damage. It's what makes him innately tanky vs mages and part of the reason why he is an \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"anti mage\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\".
Null Sphere
Single target nuke that silences them, you can use this for last hitting minions in the early lane phase as it's mana cost is not too high.
Nether Blade
It's passive allows you to regain mana on each AA and if you activate W it adds magic damage to your AA's, this basically doubles your AA damage and in the case you're hitting a champion the mana you regain each hit triples.

A level 2 Kassadin with Q/W is much stronger than a lot of people think.
Force Pulse
Ah yes, the weirdest but best skill about Kassadin! To use it you need to let it charge up to 6 stacks, and it charges up by casts spell by anyone in a vicinity near you.

It clears waves, does insane damage, slows and has a great ratio! What more could you want from a skill? :D
Riftwalk
The skill that makes Kassadin... Kassadin!

His ultimate is more or less a flash that does damage and has a short cool down. You blink extremely far, it does a lot of damage and it has short cooldown.

Jumping on top of people restores half the mana that you spent casting it, so try and land on top of people so that you do damage+gain mana back.

Lane Match Ups

Normally speaking, on other champions I can go in-depth on certain champion match ups and explain what you can do vs champions to win them.

HOWEVER, with Kassadin I think I'm just going to try and explain your goals in lane, as he literally loses all lanes 1v1 unless the enemy misplays.

(This is all pre-6 and before you have blue buff, as the lane changes after that).

1. Ideally speaking, you want to let them push on you. Kassadin can farm under turret extremely well with his W so you don't have a hard time last hitting under turret. This also keeps you safe from ganks and you are pretty hard to dive since you have a silence, just be careful using it and then getting dove.

2. In the case your lane is pushed out and you can't do anything about it, you need to ask your jungler to help you reset the wave so that you may be able to farm with either Q or at least not get zoned.

3. Do your best to survive in lane, just don't die and wait for level 6/blue buff. Once you get those two things, your life became a LOT easier.

Okay, so far it seems like Kassadin has a hard time in every match up. Which is mostly true but this does not mean he cannot win lane in the case they misplay or you have opportunities to punish them for mistakes. Here's a few things you can try and do!

1. In the case you're vs Riven or something, forcing them to use their spells and harassing them with your E will prove to do a lot more damage than people expect.

2. At level 2, if you have Q W you're much stronger than people think. Don't be too afraid of melee champions if they start fighting you, you can win the fight depending on who you're versus. And if a range champion ever comes up in range, you better smack him silly.

3. In the case you have ignite, you can try and kill your lane opponent by spamming Q/E and then flash autoing with W. Otherwise if you have teleport, just look towards level 6 so you can start making plays.

With Kassadin, I don't play to try and win lane phase as it's almost impossible early game, I look towards the mid game and post level 6 era where you've become infinitely stronger than you are the first 5 levels. By all means you can try and play Kassadin to win the early lane phase but it's extremely hard and I recommend playing safe and waiting for your power spikes. Once you hit 6 you can spam your spells on them without worry of running out of mana because of blue and the dorans/catalyst you bought.

Teamfights

So the cool thing about Kassadin in team fights is that, he has a very short cool down blink! He is very mobile and get onto the enemy back line really easy.
When you're sieging you can cast Q/E and port out safely without worry of being caught, or doing random ultimate's towards them and nuking their front line then running away.

You're there for the clean up, so send in your teammates first to deal damage and you'll finish off everyone! Don't jump in first unless you have hourglass/they can't do anything to you . You can single handedly win team fights similar to that of Khazix in the case you just wait for enemies to get low hp. Play it cool and be patient, look for good opportunities to jump onto their back line or priority target. Don't forget to AA and use W on who ever you are trying to kill.

Conclusion
