Introduction

Hey,

My name is ryoh on the NA server. I am a Platinum (if I win promos, Plat 1) Kha Zix main with over 100 games played as Kha Zix. Kha Zix is an exceptionally strong champion because of his mobility, huge burst damage, sustain, and invisibility.

Kha Zix, while being nerfed many times, is still a very strong pick in S4. Back in S3, Kha Zix was a very popular champion because of his W, which was pretty broken. Riot wanted him to be an assassin, which the W meta wasn't doing, and switched power to the Q. Plus, since there were oracles and plenty of wards, it was easy to counter his ultimate and passive. But now in S4, since there is a limit on wards and there are very little invisibility counters, this was an indirect buff to Kha Zix and all champs with invisibility.

I know, the Win Lose Ratio SUCKS. I played a lot of top Kha Zix when I didn't know how to play him in the beginning of S3, I think I went like 3/12 back then. So considering that, it's not all THAT bad.

Quick skills;

Evolve E, then R, then Q.
Max Q first and then W. Get ultimate rankings whenever you can.

Runes

Marks - I choose AD reds to increase damage potential on his Q,W,E. They are standard on pretty much all AD champions.

Seals - Since you are jungling, you should be taking these to minimize jungle camp damage. Also standard on junglers.

Glyphs - I choose scaling magic resistance because Kha Zix is an assassin that is very squishy and prone to nuke damage, usually put out by the AP caster. AP casters usually get a lot of their damage late game, so getting that extra 12 magic resist instead of flat magic resist glyphs gives him some defense.

Quintessences - These are standard on most AD assassins. I get them for the same reason as I do the marks, which is more damage on his , , and .

0 Utility
I take 4 points in the Sorcery mastery to use my abilities more often instead of my autoattacks because Kha Zix deals more damage with his abilities. The points in Brute Force, Martial Mastery, Warlord, and Havoc are to increase the physical damage that Kha Zix deals (which is a lot). 3 points in Devastating Strikes is because Kha Zix deals both magic and physical damage (magic damage from his passive which is around 500 late game if all procs are used). 1 point in Butcher is used to kill camps easier on the first couple clears. 3 points in Executioner and Dangerous Game are used for ballsy plays, and the 5% increase below 50% health is pretty good. 1 point in Spellweaving is for better dueling.

Summoner Sets

Flash & Smite
Flash is a must have on many champs, and Kha Zix is no exception. If his leap is down and he needs to get over something, Flash is there. If there is a low health champion and he has no leap, Flash is there and he can use Leap to jump out with the reset.

I don't think I need to explain Smite; it is needed for Dragon and Baron contests and much faster clears.
Ignite allows for extra damage and for you to snowball, but I think that Kha' Zix has enough damage to do that without ignite, and since you will be ganking, most lanes pick up Ignite anyways.
This spells allows for better ganks and for you to snowball, sort of like Ignite. It does reduce their armor and slows them, which is a plus. It's a pretty good spell if you like to go really ballsy in the jungle.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
5
Machete increases speed time and damage to monster camps, and the 5 pots are for sustain in the jungle.

If new to jungling:
Machete is the standard pick on jungling because it gives some sustain and extra damage to jungle creeps, and is also cheap allowing for 5 health potions to do your first couple jungle clears.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
Spirit of the Lizard Elder - This is a great item for jungling assassins. It increases damage, lowers cooldown, health/mana regen, extra TRUE damage by the passive, gives a ton of gold, and increases damage to jungle monsters. What's not to like on this? The passive also procs on Ravenous' passive AoE.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity - It gives cooldown thus lets you use your abilities more often. Great boot choice.

Ravenous Hydra - Probably the best item on Kha Zix. You can use the active in-flight, and there is a bug that if you use it in flight, you can auto attack them from the air. It also gives a TON of attack damage, and a decent amount of health regen and lifesteal. But do not fret; Lifesteal applies to the AoE damage of Ravenous Hydra (passive and active) making him lifesteal a TON of health from jungle creeps and minion waves.

Last Whisper - It gives 40% armor penetration (which is a lot, usually equal to 40-50~ in armor penetration)

Explanation for the last two items in the next chapter; they can be switched around easily with other items.
Build Order
5
You build the Spirit item first to start getting gold first, then Ionian boots for movement speed and cooldown. After, you build Ravenous and Last Whisper for a huge damage increase.

Situational Items

Maw of Malmortius
One of my favorite items for Kha Zix in this meta. Increases your damage the lower HP you go, a good magic damage shield, more attack damage, and a decent amount of magic resist. I get this item against a team with a strong AP nuke midlaner, like Ziggs or Veigar.
Spirit Visage
This item is pretty good if you are facing an AP SUSTAINED damage team. SUSTAINED. It gives you a lot of magic resist, increased healing for your W and lifesteal from Hydra, and a decent amount of health. It also gives a big chunk of cooldown reduction, half of the maximum amount.
Randuin's Omen
Awesome item against teams with a lot of AD damage and/or a fed AD carry. The active is just...amazing. The active + your passive slow + W slow makes them REALLY slow. Plus that passive slow? Oh god how slow can one go!

It gives a lot of health and armor too. Best item in my opinion if you are facing a fed AD carry.
Guardian Angel
Are you going 20/3? Can't afford to die? Carrying hard?

Get this item. Gives decent amounts of magic resist and armor and its active helps you carry harder because if you die, you just get revived and live to fight (carry) another day.
The Black Cleaver
I rarely get this item because I usually switch this item for my Spirit of the Lizard Elder only when my FULL build is finished, and games tend to not go that long.
Why don't I rush it first?

I don't rush Black Cleaver first because it isn't cost effective unless you use its 25% armor penetration passive, which is only proced after 4 autoattacks or physical damage dealing abilities. It doesn't compliment on how this guide teaches you how to play Kha' Zix, which is a jump in assassin and jump out, while still being tanky. I rarely get 4 damages on their carry without killing them first. I switch it out for my Spirit item later in the game because I don't need the Conservation stacks from it and the other stats are weaker than the Black Cleavers'.

Skills

Unseen Threat
It slows, does extra damage, and has a cool particle effect.
Scales by .5 AP.

Tips:
If you go to a place where they shouldn't have vision on you and it doesn't reset, that place is warded.

Tips:
Try to use it as much as you can during duels; if near bushes, pop into them for time to time in between autoattacks to reset the passive.
Taste Their Fear
This is Kha Zix's primary ability. It deals a decent amount of damage regularly, and there are two ways to increase it. One way is when you evolve it and it does 8% of their missing health*, and the other is 45% increase from isolation damage.

Tips:
Pick your fights well and you can pretty much win any duel. Fight while they are isolated.
If you are trying to assassinate someone and you feel they will go into a position that they would be isolated in, wait for it.

*Must be evolved

EVOLVE THIS THIRD

Void Spike
This ability is used for slowing enemies down from a range. It deals a little bit of damage, and it heals you. The slow and heal are the best parts of this ability.

Pretty easy to use, I don't think there are any tips for this that aren't obvious except this one:
If you are jumping to someone (Void Assault) before then (Leap) right after. Missile time is close to the jump time.
Leap
This ability enables him to make plays. The leap range is really big and it RESETS when you kill a champion*.

Tips:
During the jump, you can cast your and the Ravenous Hydra active. If you use the Hydra active, you can also autoattack mid flight applying (Unseen Threat)
If you are half HP, and there is an easy kill under the enemy turret, go in. You can jump in with (Leap) and then (Taste their Fear) midflight then immdeiately (Leap) out.*

*Has to be evolved to do this

EVOLVE THIS FIRST
Void Assault
It makes you invisible for a short period of time. If you evolve it, it reduces all damage by 50% when he is in the stealth.

Tips:
Weave the active in between autoattacks to keep them slowed.
See an , , , , or something else that would kill you? Use it to reduce the damage that would kill you, it might save your life. *
Also, try to use the actives to reduce damage in teamfights and duels. Use it effectively. *

*Must be evolved

Champion Matchups

Leesin
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Lee Sin is extremely hard to play against. Not only does he do a ton of damage, two of his abilities ( and grant sight. If you are trying to renew your passive during a duel, you cannot and it pretty much makes Kha's ult useless. His can also follow you if you are trying to escape. Try not to pick Kha Zix into this match up unless you know what you are doing.
Nautilus
Difficulty
Favors You
EXTREMELY easy to fight against. Nautilus is known to be one of the worst duelists in the game and is prone to strong invaders, such as Kha' Zix. To defeat Nautilus, on your first back you should buy a couple wards and go into his Jungle. Ward key spots in the Jungle, like the brush next to his Lizard buff, the brush near Wraiths, and the brush near his Golem buff. Whenever you see him on one side of the jungle, go to the other and counter jungle. If you can, kill him. With a > > > combo. (Save your Leap ability for when he runs away with his hook.)

Pros and Cons

Pros:
Sustain
Two forms of CC
Two damage amplifiers on his Q
Invisibility/Movement Speed boost
Long range gapcloser
Easy to snowball with
Damage reduction

Cons:
Squishy
Can be killed easily when stunlocked
He's a bug

Why Jungle?

? Why not top and mid? Like all the pros were doing when Kha Zix use to be popular?

The reasons why many people are taking Kha' Zix to the jungle now (including Rank 4 Challenger player Nightblue3) is because of the past changes to his and . They made the Q do more damage and the W not apply his passive, but instead it slows by 20% when not evolved for two seconds. It seems that Riot wanted Kha' Zix to be a jungler, instead of a harassing mid or top laner which use to be his meta. Since has its own individual slow, it means that both and slow the enemy, meaning that his ganking becomes much more potent. Also, the changes to his mean faster Barons and Dragon clears + more damage to the enemy champions.

Although Kha' Zix is still a very viable solo laner, I think his true potential shines in the Jungle.

Early Game

Your first camp should be the one nearest the bot lane. (Purple Side is Blue, Blue Side is Red).

Purple Side Clear:
Get the Blue Buff first, then kill Wolves. After that, get Red. Look for a gank/countergank top or mid. If all lanes are pushed, wait in a bush where their jungler will mostly gank, because he will probably gank that lane that is pushed most. If it has been a while, just go back to your jungle and farm.

Blue Side Clear:
Get the Red Buff first, then go straight to Blue. After, do the Wight camp. Look for a gank/countergank top or mid. If all lanes are pushed, wait in a bush where their jungler will mostly gank, because he will probably gank that lane that is pushed most. If it has been a while, just go back to your jungle and farm.

Mid Game

This part of the game is usually when you around 6-9. Gank a lot and never let your stacks get to 80. Evolving your E first lets you do some easy ganking because of the huge leap range increase. This is when you should also start picking people off. This means having a lot of vision. Ward a lot and try to jump on unsuspecting enemies strolling through anywhere but their lanes. You will be grouping in late mid game.

Late Game/Teamfights

Still pick people off when you can, but early late game is mostly when you group. In teamfights, wait for the enemies to burn as much Crowd Control as they would, then jump on their carries. This is the combo you should use: > > > Ravenous Hydra Active > > > .

Jump on the carries with your Void Spikes and a Leap, then in midair use Taste their Fear and the active of Ravenous Hydra. Proc your active, use Taste their Fear and Void spikes again, they should be dead. If they aren't, keep on them with the passive/ultimate combo and then leap out when they are. (That's one tanky carry). This is pretty overkill. Rinse and Repeat.

Conclusion/Disclaimer/Media

I hope this helped you play Kha' Zix. He is one of my favorite champions of all time, and he should be played more (actually no I want to play him more =D). He is a very strong champion that could carry very easily. Have fun!

*I do not think I am pro at this game. I just know how to play a decent Kha' Zix and I am trying to share my knowledge on the champion.*

@weierhlee
No. It is still stronger to evolve E than Q, since we weren't using it as a damage tool anyways.

After the Q and E Nerf, is the sequence of the evolve change ?

Great Guide! I just picked up Kah'Zix, and this helped me fix a lot of the mistakes that were holding me back. Much appreciated!
