Introduction

Hey, this is my first ever guide and its on my favorite champion Alistar. As you probably know Alistar has very good CC and at late game he can become extremely tanky, however his mana costs can let him down if not operated correctly (he can run out of mana quickly). Alistars' abilities are game and fight changing if used correctly, his Headbutt (W) and Pulverize (Q) combo can act like a Malphite Ultimate (Unstoppable Force). Alistar can stop engages and start engages, what more do you want from your support a heal? He has one of them too.

Runes

These are the runes I normally run on Alistar, Alistar is really good with movement speed because it makes its easier to catch people out. It also enables you to do random roams up to mid lane on the odd occasion. Armour and Magic Resist runes just make your more tanky for the early game.

Summoner Sets

Clarity & Ignite
Take ignite for the kill potential in lane, getting an early kill in lane can determine who wins the lane. Flash is also really good on Alistar, you can Flash and Pulverize (Q) people which can set up really good engages and plays.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Start 1
2
First couple of backs
Mid - Late game
Start 1 - Dorans shield is still good on supports because of the passive, because alistar is a melee support, your gonna get hit alot by the enemy adc.

First Couple of Backs - Get these items whenever you can, Sightstone will save you a lot of money in the game and ancient coin will make you earn more money in the game. Get Mobility boots on Alistar as speed is very important with him. Try and buy Pink wards with spare gold to have complete vision control. Once you get your sightstone, don't forget to get a sweeping lens!

Mid - Late game - Get Talisman of Ascension because it gives amazing stats and a brilliant active. 20% CDR, Excellent Mana and Health regen and an active that gives you increased movement speed, you cant go wrong with this item. Go warmogs for the extra tankiness, you dont really need randuins because your ultimate reduces all damage taken anyway, you can get it if you want but i prefer not too.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
Your final build may look like this. Frozen heart is a really good pickup because it will make your CDR at 40%. You will then be the CC master.

By late game you should be an absolute tank.

Situational Items

Spirit Visage
Get this if you need more Magic resist, if you do decide to get this item then I recommend not buying a frozen heart, its up to you though. The passive on this item is really good with your heal.
Locket of the Iron Solari
This item is good but I don't thinks its that important on Alistar, your jungler should get this item if anyone is going to get it. If you do decide to get this item, replace it with thornmail.
Athene's Unholy Grail
Yes it gives you good mana regen and CDR but no tank stats come with it apart from magic resist, this item is not really worth it in my opinion. I've bought it a couple of times in place of a Thornmail and i prefer the Thornmail or even Frozen heart.
Banner of Command
Definitely not for Alistar this item. Yes its a good supportive item, no tanky stats come with it.
Banshee's Veil
If your gonna build a magic resist item on Alistar, get Spirit Visage as it increases the amount of healing you do to yourself.
Randuin's Omen
Warmogs and Frozen heart put together is just so much better than this.
Thornmail
Frozen heart gives better stats than this item full stop.

Trample
QPulverize
WHeadbutt
ETriumphant Roar
RUnbreakable Will
Start Pulverize (Q) just in case you get close to the enemy, you can knock them up and put damage onto them. Otherwise you may want to start Headbutt if the enemy has a very aggressive support like Leona or Thresh, if they engage early you can force a disengage with your headbutt by knocking the enemy ADC away leaving the support helpless (if you do this you can normally get good damage onto the enemy support). I like to max heal as it is quite strong early game when you max it, it also keeps you and your ADC in good shape, it may not be the best heal in the game but it does the job just fine. Also the mana cost on a maxed heal is fairly low compared to his other abilities. Take your ult whenever you can for the bonus stats when using it.

Skills

Trample
Not really that useful as support Ali, it can help you push lanes and kill towers a little bit quicker but its nothing special.
Pulverize
This knock up lasts a total of 1.5 seconds which is huge, if you hit 4 or 5 people with this your probably going to win the fight quite easily. This ability is very similar to Malphites , you just dont get a run up with it unless you use your ability as the run up. This ability has a high CD to start with so make sure you use it wisely, it also burns mana quite quick if you continuously try to use it.
Headbutt
This is probably one of my favorite abilities in the whole game, it can be used in so many ways. You can use it as a gap closer and combo with your . It can be used as a disengage and and engage. It can be used to set up ganks really well (headbutt the enemy into your team). It can be used to escape by using it on enemy minions or on jungle creeps from over walls. Many uses with this ability. When in laning phase if you can you want to try and headbutt the enemy into your tower so you can get loads of damage onto them, this tactic is very hard to pull off but if it is pulled off you will either get a kill or force a flash from your opponent. Headbutt (Q) can be comboed with your Pulverize (W), I recommend all players that do play Alistar to try master this combo because its not that easy to hit all the time.
Triumphant Roar
This is Alistars AOE heal, its got a decent range and keeps you and your ADC very healthy in lane, not much more to say about this, apart from its a decent heal
Unbreakable Will
This is what makes Alistar so tanky, the reason why he is a pain in the ass to kill in fights. Again this ability can be used in many ways. It can be used to tower dive, for surviving an enemy gank and for surviving fights overall. Many people don't know that this ability gives you a nice chunk of AD with it when activated, this bonus AD is very nice early game when the enemy ADC will be very squishy. This ability can also be used as a cleanse, this is because when you activate it all CC effects are removed, very nice for turning fights around when the enemy thinks they are going to kill you.

How you fare against other Supports

Annie
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Before the tweak to Annies' stun she could wreck an Alistar in lane with ease. Now that the stun has been changed you have more of a chance of not getting killed early on. With Annie you should never engage on her when she has her stun available, she can turn fights extremely well resulting in probably you and your ADC's death. You have to play passive against an Annie, try catch her out when she misses her stun or when she is the only one in lane. If Annie backs in lane and leaves her ADC alone, try and engage on the enemy ADC as it may be the only chance you get for an engagement of your own. When you reach level 6 in lane it makes things a lot safer for you, your ultimate removes any CC therefore if she stuns you, pop ult and try and reengage or just get away safely.
Blitzcrank
Difficulty
Favors You
Simple as this, If he pulls you he is probably gonna die, If he pulls your ADC just go and deal with theres with your CC. Very easy lane in my opinion
Janna
Difficulty
Favors You
Just like sona with this one, she will probably poke you to make your time harder in lane so just engage onto her due to how squishy she is. If she times her Tornado (Q) correctly, she can mess up your combo which can prove to be costly. Her ult can really mess you up too as it can displace you, this wrecking your combo and probably putting you in a bad position. I would say this lane is more of a skill match up.
Leona
Difficulty
Favors You
When she engages just headbutt her ADC away and she is left alone. Even better, if she engages near you tower, just headbutt her underneath it. You win this lane by counter engaging, if you engage first you will probably loose.
Lulu
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Lulu can be a pain towards Alistar, she out pokes you and can give you a really hard time while in lane. In this lane i would wait for a gank to try and kill the enemy. Also be careful of her ult as it can completely change the tide of a fight in lane if you go in. She has decent CC when fighting too so just be very careful with this match up, that's all i can advise, be careful and play safely.
Nami
Difficulty
Favors You
Nami is very squishy early on, you can engage her level 2 if you wanted too because you can probably kill her. If she bubbles your ADC just CC the enemy ADC and you should be fine. Not that hard of a match up but can be tricky and annoying if she hits many of her bubbles on your ADC as it can make you use up a lot of your mana when dealing with the situation.
Sona
Difficulty
Favors You
If you wait around in lane she can just poke you for the whole laning phase, in a lane like this i like to engage on the sona as quickly as possible to try and kill her due to how squishy she is. If this is successful it should make her quite scared of you in laning phase making her not poke you as much. If she ults you, just remember you have an ult also that removes all CC.
Soraka
Difficulty
Favors You
She can mess up your combo with her silence if timed right. Apart from that she will probably play extremely passive, this making your lane very boring, your lane will pobably become a farm lane. If this does happen just make sure you are fully protected with wards, you may be able to roam to mid lane if you see a good opportunity too. This lane is easy but can be very very boring.
Taric
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
If he stuns your ADC just go headbutt there ADC so he cant follow up on tarics' engage. If you engage however try not to focus the taric as his W passive makes him very tanky and hard to kill. There is a possibility you can loose fights in this lane due to tarics' abilities and what they do. His heal can become very annoying and his Armour shred on his W can hurt you or your ADC a lot
Thresh
Difficulty
Favors You
Many people say Thresh is a counter to Alistar, whenever I've played against a thresh I've done fine against him. If he engages just headbutt the enemy ADC away, you may need to knock the enemy ADC up if they try to click the lantern, if they still try to click the lantern after that then just stand on it! The good thing about thresh is that if his ADC does get caught by you he can easily get them out by giving them the lantern, if he does this then try stop them by standing on the lantern. If thresh misses his hook in lane, punish him for it and try catch the enemy ADC out with your combo. However if you engage first and he hooks your ADC, you may loose the fight.
Zyra
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Zyra is very squishy early game, however her early game damage can really hurt you and your ADC if she lands her skill shots. She has relatively low cool downs so she can spam her abilities which can be annoying. I like to wait for Zyra to become mana burnt before i do any sort of engage onto her. Remember, early game you are quite squishy, therefore its not wise to engage a Zyra when she full mana due to her high damage. Her root can be very annoying towards you, it can stop you from doing your combo which is a real pain when wanting to engage. Try play safe in this lane, don't get caught and you will be fine. Catch her out when you can (preferably when she is on low mana), you will be able to kill her quick due to her squishyness.

Laning Phase

Early game you just want to be a body guard for you ADC protecting them at all cost's. Sometimes you will see a good chance to turn fights or maybe even engage on fights while in lane. Just be aware, early game you are not as tanky as you may think without your ultimate. Try catch your opponents out and headbutt them under your tower if you can. Help the jungler by setting up ganks by headbutting the enemy into your team or backwards. Keep wards up at all time to avoid enemy ganks, it saves your life.

After Laning Phase

When Laning phase is over, make sure you keep timer on objectives like dragon and maybe even baron if you or the enemy go for a very early baron. After laning phase I like to roam a lot warding the map trying to catch people out setting up kills for your team. If i'm not doing that i will be with my ADC most of the time acting like a bodyguard for them. If you think your ADC is safe, then just do the same for your other team mates.

Late Game

In late game you should be very tanky and a pain to kill. Keep the map warded at all costs, use pinks and sweeping lens to clear out enemy wards to deny vision. Protect your team when you can and dish out heals to whoever needs them. Keep objectives warded all the time as dragon is worth a lot late game and baron late game is a big power spike to the team who kills it.

Teamfights

In team fights there is 2 things you can do. You can peel for your ADC or you can engage and focus the enemy's MVP. If i know that my team has really poor initiation i will do the engage myself. However if i know my team already has a good engage then i will normally peel for my ADC. Alistar is very good at peeling due to his skill set and his great CC.

Conclusion

All in all Alistar in my opinion is very good and underrated champion. I am surprised more people don't play him, he is a really good counter pick to the more popular supports like Blitzcrank, Leona and Thresh. He has great CC and can get very tanky if build correctly.
