Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hey, thanks for reading my guide. My name is Sebaku and I play on the EU west server, and am currently ~1650 elo. So since you're reading this, you're interested in Shyvana, and you might be wondering why to choose her and what she can do.

Why Shyvana?
Shyvana is one of the best, if not the best counter jungling solo top. With her high mobility, fast creep clearing and her ult escape ability she can easily push her lane, go into enemy jungle, kill some creeps and be back in lane on time without missing any creeps in your lane. I recently picked her up after I saw Moscow 5 dominate with her in Kiev, and I tried to figure her out as much as possible. I've played Shyvana solo top and jungle before, without the counter jungling, but this new way of playing her is twice as much fun.

Can I play her?
If you'd rather farm the whole game rather than harassing your opponents, then yes, Shyvana might be something for you. My personal goal is getting 100 farm at 11 minutes every game, and that's a way higher standard compared to the other champions I play. Other than that, you'll need a lot of map awareness, because you'll be in the enemy jungle a lot, and need to check the map frequently, to prevent yourself from getting ganked.

Why would I counter jungle and not just lane all the time?
Because she has the ability to farm both the lane and the enemy jungle. You shouldn't let her specialties go to waste by just staying in lane. You can deny your enemy from jungle creeps, and gain some extra exp/gold/buffs for your own. Don't you hate those junglers who keep camping your lane? Well it's time we top laners did something back to them!

When should I play her?
Shyvana works best in 5v5 arranged teams, but I've played her in 1700 Solo queue games and she works fine there as well, as long as you have enough wards to ensure safe counter jungling. Just make sure you discuss things with your own jungler and you should manage. Other then that, there will be a complete champion chapter against which champions Shyvana works best further in this guide. That chapter includes both enemy junglers and top lanes. Even though Shyvana works against most laners, there are some you might need some extra practice against. Take a look in the Counters chapter for more information.

Futhermore, Shyvana is a great late game wall, able to eat a lot of damage, distort team fights, pin down fleeing champions and output a decent amount of AoE damage with her ult. She might not be the best champion early game, but she is a literally a beast late game.

At the moment Shyvana is my favorite champion and she is a lot of fun to play with. It makes me happy every time to see the enemy jungler being 4 levels lower than myself. If you haven't played her yet, just give her a shot!

Gameplay/Tutorial Shyvana Counter Jungle Solo Top

So once again guys, keep in mind this works for me at 1700 Elo. I'm not sure if it will go this easy on higher Elo. Also sometimes I do lose my lane top as Shyvana, but I can come back with farm most games and still do the counter jungling even if I'm behind. You just have to be really careful!

Masteries

Explanation
I take 21 in offense and 9 in defense on Shyvana. You do both Magic and Attack damage, so I get both the penetrations. There is no reason to take Deadliness anymore, since the crit chance is removed, so this is prety much your best shot. Havoc is horrible, so don't take it either. I get 2 points in Butcher to ensure faster counter jungling and just getting a few more last hits which you would could miss otherwise, but you can switch 1 point for Summoner's Wrath, if you run ghost, ignite or exhaust.

Deep Explanation
  • 3/3 Brute Force increases your attack damage, helps you in every way.
  • 2/2 Butcher gives you more damage on creeps, which means faster counter jungling
  • 4/4 Alacrity gives you the attack speed needed for counter jungling and your passive.
  • 4/4 Sorcery gives you a nice cooldown and is needed for Arcane Knowledge
  • 1/1 Weapon Expertise gives you armor pen for late game, increases your single target damage.
  • 1/1 Arcane Knowledge gives you magic pen for late game, increases your AOE damage.
  • 2/3 Vampirism gives you life steal, which is always handy in lane and jungle.
  • 3/3 Sunder gives armor pen, which you need for faster counter jungling.
  • 1/1 Executioner gives more damage, duh.

  • 3/3 Hardiness gives more armor, handy in both jungle and lane.
  • 1/3 Resistance gives magic resist, for possible magic opponents in lane.
  • 4/4 Durability gives hp, which is always handy, and it's needed for Veteran's Scars
  • 1/1 Veteran's Scars gives quite a bit hp early game. Can save you're life in early fights.

You could also pick a 9/21/0 Mastery build, though I would advise 21/9/0, since you're already quite tanky to begin with and the extra damage will help you more.

Runes

Explanation
As you can see, I'm using armor pen marks, armor seals, mr/lvl glyphs and attack damage quints. With this set of runes, I'll have a total of 21 armor, which is enough to completely shred the armor off of the red and blue buff, and will help you with faster counter jungling.

You could switch out your marks or quints for either more AD, more Arpen or even attack speed. It really comes down to your personal preferences. More AD will give you better lasthitting early game, more ArPen will give you better late game damage and faster counter jungling, and attack speed will give you more damage in 1v1 fights and also faster counter jungling early game. Really depends on what you wanna go for.

This rune setup is working for me, though any rune setup similar to this will work, so experiment yourself and decide what suits you best!

Summoner Spells

OR

Explanation:
My summoner spells really depend on my opponent and on which side I spawn. If you want to take an enemy buff at level 1. For example, you know the enemy jungler is starting at blue (Amumu, Fiddle), you could start at the enemy red, clear it on your own, recall, and TP into your lane. It's rather risky though, and I would only advise it in premade 5v5 games where you can get some cover from your friends. Also TP is really handy against hard lanes like Gangplank and Tryndamere, so you can go back and heal up if you're losing your lane early game.

Take or if you think you can handle your lane and might be able to end up killing your opponent. You should be able to force a kill against champions with a weaker early game like Irelia, Jax and Warwick.

And last but not least, some people tend to run instead of . It leaves you with less escape tools from the enemy jungle, though you will be able to chase fast opponents. But since Shyvana is already a pretty fast champion with her to begin with, I would recommend .

Skills

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Passive: Fury of the Dragonborn
Shyvana's melee attacks enhance her abilities.

Twin Bite - Reduces the cooldown by 0.5 seconds.
Burnout - Extends the duration by 1 second to a maximum of 6 seconds.
Flame Breath - Deals 15% of the ability's damage to debuffed targets.
Dragon's Descent - Attacks generate 2 Fury and Shyvana gains 1 Fury every 1.5 seconds while in human form.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation:
Pretty useful passive, good for her kit. Mainly use the auto attacks for the extension of her W. Also her passive is the main reason why attack speed is so good on her, since it works with well with all 4 of her spells. Make sure to always auto attack when you have W on, since it will greatly increase it's duration thanks to this handy passive.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Q: Twin Bite
Next auto attack hits twice, second hit deals 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 % of total attack damage
Dragon Form: second hit deals aoe damage in front of her

Dragon Form: Twin Bite cleaves all units in front Shyvana.

Cooldown 10/9/8/7/6 seconds

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation:
It gives you another auto attack, so this will also proc 2 hits of items like Ionic Spark, or will do 2 damage instead of 1 damage on wards. Leveling it up won't increase the damage too much, so max it last.

It also resets your auto attack timer, so if you use this right after an auto attack you can get do 3 quick auto attacks right after each other. Use the ability in lane to harass your opponent in lane with a Auto attack - Q combo. Other than that, it's also really nice in the jungle, as you can get multiple Wriggle procs with it. Amazing ability for her kit!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

W: Burnout
Shyvana deals 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 (+20% of bonus attack damage) magic damage per second to nearby enemies and moves 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 % faster for 3 seconds. Shyvana's Movement Speed bonus is reduced over time.

Dragon Form: Burnout scorches the earth, continuing to damage enemies that stand on it.

Cooldown 12 seconds

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation:
Your main damage spell. This is what makes you strong in early 1v1 fights, this is what makes you clear jungle creeps extremely fast, this is what allows you to push like no tomorrow.

Whenever your opponent is too close to you, activate this spell and chase him a bit. The movement speed increase will let you easily keep up with enemy's early game, or gives you the potential to escape enemy's in sticky situations.

As said before in the passive section, auto attack as much as possible when you have this spell on, since it will increase the duration of this spell.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

E: Flame Breath
Shyvana unleashes a fireball that deals 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and burns 15% of their armor for 4 seconds.

Dragon Form: Flame Breath engulfs all units in a cone in front of her.

Cooldown 12/11/10/9/8 seconds

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation:
A lot of people find this spell useless since it barely does anything for you. The damage is low and the armor shred isn't that amazing. Though, it can definitively make a difference in early 1 on 1 fights. Always lead with this spell if you're going to fight, since you will do more damage with you're auto attacks on the target that is marked with your E. You can use this to last hit minions that are low and too far away from you. And it's handy in the jungle, since you will shred some of the jungle creeps his armor as well. Though, sadly enough this doesn't work on Dragons and Baron's anymore.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

R: Dragon's Descent
Active: Shyvana transforms into a dragon and takes flight to a target location. Enemies along her path take 200 / 300 / 400 (+70% of ability power) magic damage and are knocked toward her target location.

Passive: Shyvana reinforces her scales, increasing her Armor and Magic Resist by 15/20/25. Defensive bonuses are doubled in Dragon Form.

Cost 6 fury a second and max fury to activate

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation:
Its great in team fights, making all of your spells AoE and increasing your survivability. I also use it as an extra flash whenever I get caught in the enemy jungle while I'm counter jungling. It also knocks back your enemies, pushes the enemy carries into your team, or pushes the bruisers away from your carries. It's hard to hit everyone you want to hit and use it to the max, but it can totally turn a teamfight.

Skill Order

> > >

Explanation:
I take W at level 1 and max it first, for fast creep clearing, fast pushing, and most sustained damage in early fights. I take Q at level 2 for the extra auto attack you can throw in. W at 3 again and E at level 4. After that just take your ult whenever you can followed by maxing in the order stated above.

If you're having a hard lane against a ranged harasser like Nidalee, Rumble or Ryze, you could take your E earlier at level 2 or even level 1, to be able to last hit from distance.

Why max E over Q?
Well the main reason I did this in the first place, was because I've read it in some guide, and I just blindly followed that. Then recently I read through the new revamped guide of FYA Umashi, and he stated that he leveled Q above E. So that started me thinking.

So leveling Q increases your damage with 5% of your total attack damage where E has a raw 45 magic damage increase. Early game your average attack damage will be around 80-100, and 5% of 80-100 is 4-5 damage. So all you will really have is the 1 second cooldown. However the E will be dealing magic damage, and since we are not running any magic pen (except for the 10% mastery), the damage will be lowered a bit. Most people have around the 40 mr early game (since most top players run mr/lvl glyphs) and we have 10% magic pen so our damage will be reduced by ~26% (40 * 0.9 = 36, 100/(100+36) = ~74%).

It's okay if you didn't understand the last part, what it means is, that we will do an extra 33 damage with every E level up. And only 5 damage with an Q level up.

However Q's cooldown will go from 10 to 6, which is a total of 40% cooldown reduction. And E will go from 12 to 8 which is a total of 33% cooldown reduction.

So the damage increases is better on E, and the cooldown reduction is a bit better for Q. In the end it doesn't matter, so pick what suits your own style. Definitely max E before Q if your getting zoned, otherwise it's your choice.

Item Builds

Starting Items:

cloth-armorhealth-potion5 Main opening, early wriggles, armor for jungle + opponent in top.

boots-of-speedhealth-potion3 If you want early mobility/playing against an AP.

health-potion5health-potion4sight-ward2 Good for early trading, and more safety with counter jungling.

Core:

wriggles-lanternmercurys-treadsphagewits-end

You'll get a decent amount of MR, Armor and HP from these Items, aside from attack speed for your passive and faster counter jungling.

Other boots options:

boots-of-mobility If you got an early tower, and want to roam the map.
If you have a hard lane against an auto attacker like .

Lategame:
You can choose between multiple items, all having their own purpose.

It's a good item. I don't actually build it a lot on Shyvana, unless I have a huge advantage. It's really expensive, but it's worth it if you can afford it. It gives you a slow, attack speed, movement speed and a sheen proc. It's all really handy on her.

If you're not getting a Trinity, you should get this big guy. This allows you to stick to most fleeing champions. You'll need either this or Trinity, since you barely have any CC, and most red buffs will go to the ad carry lategame. Other than that, it gives you a nice chunk of HP.

If you need armor and some extra damage, this guy can really come in handy. It goes well together with a Frozen Mallet, but if you went Trinity, you can always build Warmog's afterwards.

Speaking of Warmog's, if you have a lot of mr and armor already, you should start stacking some hp. As said before, works great with atma's.

Gives you all the defensive stats you need. It's an amazing item and every team should at least get 1 aegis. If no one in your team is building this, you should probably pick up an aegis asap. And if the enemy team has AP poke, or is AP heavy in general, then you should consider building it into a bulwark rather quickly. You might even want to finish it before your Frozen Mallet/Trinity. But most of the times the support or jungler will build this, so you won't have to.

Just like aegis, it gives you a decent armor and mr, but most of all it gives you a revive. If your team is doing good, you can pick this one up to ensure the victory. Don't build this when you're losing though, since no one will be able to help you after you revive.

Sometimes I replace my wriggles with this guy. It boosts your normal attacks, and gives you the ability to sustain yourself. If you're really really really doing well, you could even pick this up in laning phase, and totally demolish your opponent in lane.

Its a really decent item, and I've actually been building it more often than Warmogs these days. Against teams who have 3 or more AD champions you'd rather get this item than a Warmog's. It gives you armor, hp, extra AoE magic damage and will give you AD if you have an Atma's Impaler.

This item works really well with Shyvana, mainly because you get a lot of free magic resist and armor from her ultimate and the duration of Randuin's active scales with magic resist and armor. If you're a gold/5 user and build Heart of Gold on Shyvana, then definitively finish it into a Randuin's Omen.

It's a good Item for your 6th slot. You shouldn't rush this item though. All stats on it are really good, and will increase your damage and sustain, but you shouldn't forget that tankiness comes first.

Optional item to get, since all stats are really usefull on Shyvana. If you don't have any damage dealers next to your AD carry, or if the enemy team is really tanky, or if you get an early lead in your lane, you might want to pick up this beauty.

Good against heavy AP teams. Also, if you are laning against Rumble, Kennen or any pesky AP's that are hard to lane against, you might want to consider getting an early hexdrinker. Don't upgrade it until you get your core items though.

Final Build:
Most games my final build will look like this:

mercurys-treadsfrozen-malletwits-end

Not saying this is the best build, just saying that I generally use a build similar to this. Just try out multiple builds yourself, so you will eventually find the build which is most satisfying to your play style.

Counter Jungling

Explanation
So this is the section this whole guide is about. This is where Shyvana shines! Counter jungling and laning top at the same time. First of all let's see why we would counter jungle in the first place.

Pros
  • You can get more exp by killing jungle creeps.
  • You can get more gold by killing jungle creeps.
  • You can deny your enemy jungler from exp and gold.
  • You can get buffs for yourself and deny the opponents from these buffs.
  • You can gank midlane really easily from the enemy jungle.
  • You can make the enemy jungler so annoyed that he will underperform in rage. (^^) jk

I've seen Junglers who were 5 levels lower than me, just because my own jungler and I totally messed up their jungler by ganking him and stealing his farm. Its really amazing, just give it a try and I'm sure you'll be just as convinced as I am!

Cons
  • You need to buy extra wards.
  • You'll be more vulnerable for ganks in the enemy jungle.
  • You need to be able to push (and win) your lane in order to counter jungle.

You can make up the ward costs with the extra creeps you kill in the enemy jungle, and if you're doing everything correctly, both points 2 and 3 of Cons won't be valid anymore either. So as long as you do everything right, there will only be pros for your team! So what are you waiting for, start countering ALL the jungle!

How to counter jungle?
If you want to counter jungle as a top lane, you have to make sure you're winning your lane and are able to push your lane. When you reach level 6, you should have enough money to get a wriggles, if you don't have one already. And if you farmed a bit more, you should also be able to get boots of speed and a ward to boot. When you have these 3 items you're ready to counter some jungle.

Ask your support to CV the enemy jungle, or just wait until the enemy jungler shows up at bot lane, so you can go into his jungle and place your wards (wriggles+ward). Before you do that, make sure to push the lane against the enemy tower, so you don't lose any minions in the meantime. Check if any creeps are up, and if so ask your jungler to help you with them, or kill them on your own. Shyvana can clear creeps at insane speed with wriggles, so it should be no problem for you. Then time the minions in your head, or type them in chat and return to your lane, and push right before the enemy jungle creeps respawn so you can be there when they are respawned.

Other than that, you can also take your own jungle creeps when you're pushed, if your jungler allows it, when he is bot lane or killing dragon for example.

Also don't forget to refresh your wards when they are almost burned out, since without wards you can't counter jungle.

Creep timers
So whenever you kill creeps, they will be dead for a certain amount of time. Try to time them as much as possible so you can kill them as soon as they spawn:
  • Wraiths, 50 seconds
  • Wolves, 60 seconds
  • Golems, 60 seconds
  • Blue Golem, 5 minutes
  • Red Lizard, 5 minutes
  • Dragon, 6 minutes
  • Baron, 7 minutes

Working together
Make sure you work together with your mid and own jungler. They can help you with counter jungling, or you could provide buffs for them. For example the blue buff would be way better on the mid lane, and then the jungler can take his own blue buff, leaving the enemy team with no blue buff at all. You can also easily gank after a counter run, so make sure you stay in contact with your team.

Just practice on remembering the timers by feeling and explore and try out counter jungling as much as possible in co-op's normals or wherever you feel like using it, to master it, even on other champions.

Counters

Explanation
So Shyvana is a great champion, but like all champions, she has her counters. She only works against a handful of junglers and solo tops, so make sure you don't first pick Shyvana every game. You should pick her as a counter for either the enemy jungle or/and the enemy solo top. I'll rate all the possible enemy junglers and solo tops with stars from * (Easy) to ***** (Very Hard).

Solo tops
So we'll start with all possible people you can run into at top. (If I forgot one, please tell me)

**
Akali is really doable for Shyvana. Just make sure you don't take too much free damage from her Q, auto attack combo and counter her with , auto attack and when she tries to get near you. You can also still damage her in her shroud with the AOE of . Just be careful when you're counter jungling, since she can close distant really well with her ult, and can catch you off guard if you don't ward properly.

**
Cho'Gath is pretty much a farm lane for Shyvana, since he won't be able to kill you early game, and you can't kill him. Dodge his rupture's and harass him if he gets to close. Be aggressive early game and outfarm him. After you got your wriggles you should easily be able to push lanes and counter jungle.

**
I haven't played against a lot of them yet, but as far as I've seen, it's not the hardest lane out there. You should be able to win trades early on, and the only real thing you should be careful off is not fighting him when your both 100% and fight till the death, since his execute will do more damage that way. Just go for small trades, and you should be fine.

****
Her harass is really annoying early on. You definitely want to start with 9 pots against her, to heal up the harass. If she misses her cocoon in lane, and your minions are pushing, you should pressure her and go in and harass. Most of the time though, you will be pushed against your turret pre-6. Once you get some mr, you should try and be more aggressive.

***
Meh. Don't fall behind or you lose. Try to bait out her auto attack shield by engaging just with your and use your auto attacks after the shield is down. Other than that, be very careful at level 6, and don't hesitate with buying some extra armor.

**
Just like , Galio is pretty much a farm lane. Just make sure you dodge his Q's. Try to zone him early game so he has to use his Q's on minions to farm. Just farm up and get your wriggles out fast. Unlike Cho'Gath though, you are able to kill Galio early game, if you run . Try to catch him by surprise after he used a Q and you might end up getting a kill.

***
This guy can be a bit tricky. Especially the first 6 levels will be a pain, since he can just keep harassing you with his Q, and you can't really do much about it. Also some lucky early crits will just cripple you so beware! Just be really careful early game, and it's ok if you miss a few creeps in order to stay on safe range. Try to last hit as much as possible with and try to damage him if he uses a Q on a minion. Once you have your wriggles, you should be fine and be able to out-sustain his damage. Also if the GP runs exhaust, then you shouldn't try and fighting him at all in the early levels. Exhaust + his passive will just annihilate you.

*
Garen is like Shyvana but worse. He has a speed buff, needs to get close to the opponent and does aoe damage around him just like you. It's cute at level 1 and 2, but after level 3 you should easily win the damage exchanges. Just make sure you don't get overconfident when he has his ult up, since it can do tons of damage as a finishing blow.

**
Harass her. That's all you need to do. Make sure she doesn't get minions early game, you can easily harass her, since Shyv is a lot stronger than Irelia early game. Irelia needs to get close to minions if she wants to last hit, so just go all out on her whenever she tries to last hit a minion near you. If you don't harass her, and let her farm as much as you, you will end up losing mid game. So make sure you deny her!

**
Barely ever see this guy anymore, though once played against a really good one. You shouldn't underestimate his damage, his passive + Knockup combo can do quite a chunk of damage. Just make sure you counter attack him whenever he jumps to you, since he will have everything on cd after that, and you can just free damage him.

****
Haven't played the match-up too often yet but I can say, that his range harass is a pain in the ass. Pre level 6 is really hard if the Jayce is decent, and you should probably focus on just last hitting. Teleport really helps since you'll probably get pushed out of lane, and you can use teleport to get right back into lane. Ask for ganks if he pushes a lot, and if he doesn't just farm as good as possible. If you can get close to him, you will win the trades, but most of the time he will just knock you back, and speed himself up.

***
He can do quite the burst, but if you stay on at least 40% HP you should be fine. You can win damage trade-offs and you can farm better. Just make sure you don't fight against him when you're both low. Stay safe early game, get a bit tanky and you will be able to push and counter jungle as much as you want. Also if he wastes his stun on nothing, go in right away, you'll easily win trades if he can't block your AA's.

****
Hard lane, you want to start with 9 pots against her, as she will probably harass you a lot early game, and there isn't a lot you can do against it. When you feel that the enemy is overextending you can try going all in and straight up burst her with, e w q ignite and some auto's. Though most of the time you won't get the opportunity for it. Try to farm what you can with your e and don't overextend just to get 1 creep if you end up losing 200 hp for it.

*****
Dat hamster. He is really annoying to deal with in lane. He can just harass you from range and you won't be able to have an answer ready for him. Just try to farm as much as possible and try to dodge his Q's, and stay away from him when he has his Electrical Surge stacks up. Also beware for flash kills when he got his ult, since he can output quite the burst when he hits 6. After level 6 though, you should be able to take a punch and you might try damaging him when he has some CD's up. Anyway try not picking Shyvana against Kennen is the best advice I can give.

**
Don't fight with him when there aren't minions near you. All in all, try to avoid taking hits from his W when he uses it to farm. When you're 6 and got some armor, you should be able to win trades with him.

***
I've actually won all my solo top encounters against Lee Sin, even though on paper he would counter Shyvana. He can lower your attack speed, which cripples most of your spells, and he can jump away from your AOE damage. Though it doesn't really go like that. You can win low level encounters, just try not to fight when he slows you, and jump in when his spells are on cooldown. You do more damage as long as he doesn't lower your attack speed, keep that in mind and try to fight near his minions later in the game so he won't be able to jump away to a minion to escape.

*
Deny. That's all I have to say. Just like against , don't let him free farm or you will lose. He doesn't have any ranged attacks, so he has to get in close range to last hit. He is really weak at low levels though, so try to get the lane pushed and he won't be able to touch any minions anymore if you punish him if he gets too close. His slow is really annoying just like Lee Sin's slow but once his slow is on CD, he has nothing to stop you from killing him and his jungle creeps.

*****
Another harass champ just like . Only this one also has sustain. Just keep the same strat as against Kennen, try last hitting and avoid damage. She can burst you down at level 6 so be careful. If she goes AP you should be able to win the lane after you have boots and wriggles. If she goes AD there isn't much you can do and you should just try and keep up with her farm.

****
Pesky guy. He has decent damage at low levels, but is really squishy as well. Don't overextend and underestimate his true damage and you will be able to crush him later on. Be careful of early engages, since the lower his HP is, the faster he will hit. Just sit out the true damage spam in the beginning, and start doing some big trades at level 6+.

****
Another harass champion. Throwing spears at you 24/7. Make sure you have enough hp pots to sustain his harass. Always run against him, since you will need it to get back into lane faster. He is just a early game beast, so like always, try to farm as much as possible, avoid too much damage, and kick his ass mid game.

**
Get wriggles and you win. He's really easy imo, though he can be a bit hard early game. Out heal his harass with you hp pots, get wriggles as fast as possible, and he won't do anything anymore. You can even get and then you can just ignore him. Just play safe early game and you should be ok!

***
Pretty even lane, both do a lot of damage early game and scale well into mid game. I really think the better player will just win this match up. Just activate your when she Q jumps you, and you should be able to have quite even damage exchanges.

***
Even though Rumble looks like a counter to Shyvana, I've actually never lost this matchup. I've played against 3 Rumbles as Shyvana in ESL games, and won my lane in all 3 of them. Not sure if opponents or bad, or matchup is good, but ok. Start with boots against him, and dodge his slow darts with your if needed. You can also use it to run away from his flamethrower. When he has his spells on cooldowns, chase him and damage him. You probably won't be able to kill him, but you might be able to push him out of your lane.

*****
Don't play Shyvana against Ryze. Next.

Ok, well if you really want to play Shyvana against Ryze, then you should first prepare for one hell of a hard game. He will just throw Q's at you forever, and when you get too close to him, he will snare you. He will also build armor first, so you won't be able to do anything against him. You won't be able to push your lane (or last hit at all), or be able to counter jungle. The whole point of choosing Shyvana, is getting a lot of farm and denying the enemy's from creeps. All not possible against Ryze, so just don't choose Shyv against Ryze, or switch with your mid lane if needed. Or ask for a lot of ganks, since Ryze doesn't have any escapes in his own kit.

**
Ah Shen the ninja. He's pretty easy as long as you have teleport. If your playing blind pick and you weren't able to pick teleport, because you didn't know you were up against one, you should always, ALWAYS pressure him so he can't teleport to other lane without you realizing it. Whenever he ults, you ult him which cancels his ult. Don't worry if he is under his turret, most of the time you won't get more than 1 or 2 turret hits for it, and since we are pretty bulky, we don't mind that, since we just helped out the other lanes. When you do have teleport though, try to teleport after him when he ults. Laning in general against shen is pretty easy, as he has no way to win trades against you and all he can do to win is throw q's at you.

**
Trolololol Singed. Well he isn't easy, but not insanely hard either. Harass and deny him early game, and try to avoid walking into his poison. Also beware of flings in turret range. If he gets near you, just damage him with E, W, Q, Auto attack, and stop the chase there, so you won't get any other poison damage. Beat him early on, don't let him snowball.

*
Really easy, free farm lane. Nothing else to say. Just like Irelia and Nasus, don't let him farm, deny and harass.

****
It's doable, but really hard. If he ends up harassing you a lot, you won't be able to win. If he doesn't you will be able to win. It's also hard to counter jungle, since he will have everything mushroomed, so you won't be able to get into the enemy jungle undetected. All I can say is play safe, and don't fight in his mushroom field.

**
Not sure if he's really easy, or if I just get retarded Tryndamere's against me all the time. You can destroy him before level 6, and if he reaches level 6 just bait out his ult, and save for the kill. You can actually easily dive him after his ult is down. Just make sure he doesn't spin away too far.

***
Another even matchup. Get sustain really fast, as you will need it against him. Don't take free tiger damage on low levels. You should be able to outrun his bearstance with your . Just farm as much as possible, you will most likely not be able to kill him or be killed.

***
He is a pretty decent opponent. He has more sustain early levels, so either harass him a lot, or don't harass at all. I'd go with the first though. Focus mainly on creeps, since you will most likely not be able to kill him anyway.

**
She can dish out quite some damage in the early stages of the game, but she probably won't be able to out trade you as long as you keep your w on in exchanges and don't trade when it's on CD. She's hard to kill in mid game, but you should be able to outfarm her quite easily

***
Match-up really depends on the skill level of the opponent. Warwick has a lot of sustain, though he has no skills to push a lane. So if you end up having a stalemate in lane, just counter jungle all the time after you pushed your lane, get an advantage out of it and win your lane like that. Note for agressive players: Don't tower dive when he has his ult k? ^^

***
If you're playing against a good Wukong, you'll might end up losing your lane. He can harass you a lot, and you can't counter harass him if he uses his decoy's correctly. Though, he doesn't have infinite mana, so strike him when his mana get's low. Play aggressive the first 2-3 levels until he has his decoy, then be a bit more cautious and dominate him when you get your wriggles.

*****
This guy is insanely hard. He can harass you all day long and even damage you when you're standing under your turret. All I can say is get sustain really fast, since he will just out-sustain and out-harass you.

***
Pretty even matchup. Be careful of his damage on level 6 as he will be able to all in you, especially if you haven't bought yet. Once you got some armor in your build, you should be able to outfarm him and bully him out of lane. Dodge his harass early, and strike back with your own harass when his spells are on CD.

Junglers
So now we will discuss the enemy junglers. Remember, these are the guys you will invade as a solo top.

*
Really easy to counter jungle. He isn't a strong duelist so you can take him on, and he has no escape ability's so you should be able to stick on him with your high movement speed and movement speed buff. Just be careful for his ult on level 6.

****
He is pretty fast at clearing creeps, so he is a bit hard to counter jungle. Also don't fight with him, since you won't be able to kill him in the first place and if he has red buff, he will just slow you until either mid or top catches up to you and finish you.

*
Another easy invade. Not only is he really slow in the jungle, he is also squishy and can only stop you with his fear. You can easily counter jungle against a fid, since you can just ignore him most of the time and even go after him if he wastes his drain. Don't get too close though when he has his drain up. Just wait until he uses a drain on a jungle creep and then go in for the kill.

***
Kinda like Cho, if he has red buff you are screwed. You won't be able to get away unless you waste a flash or ult. Don't fight him either, since it will take some time before you can get him down, and by the time he is low, enemy reinforcements will have already come.

**
This guy is not the fastest jungler either. Make use of that. All he has is his knockup combo, so you can get away from him easily. Just be careful when he has his ult. Also better not try and fight this guy, because he can get tanky really fast early on.

****
Really shouldn't mess around too much with him. He can be really deadly if he sees your counter jungling coming. Make sure he isn't near you when you decide to invade the enemy jungle, since he can slow you like hell and even chase you over walls after your ult or flash. However, if you are farming really well, and are ahead of everyone, you are able to dual him 1v1, but you should be sure that both top and mid lane are not going to help him, or you'll need your own mid and top to support you as well.

****
He clears his jungle really fast and he is kinda tanky as well. Just like Lee Sin, you can fight him 1 on 1, but you have to be sure that either your allies are coming as well, or his allies are not coming. (either being dead or ganking bot lane) If you decide to invade on your own, and get rooted by Maokai, things will become really hard for you.

***
Counter jungling isn't really hard against this guy, the only problem is, that if they have their jungle warded, he can totally catch you off guard with his ult. He's a strong duelist, but you can take him, as long as you have a small item lead.

**
He's fast, so make sure you don't underestimate his speed. Though he will be low a lot of times as well, making him an easy prey for us counter junglers. If you know he's heading somewhere, wait for him in a bush, and strike him when he doesn't expect it.

*****
He's just really good at preventing you stealing his farm. Only because of his high mobility, you won't be able to be a 100% sure if your safe while counter jungling. Warding is especially needed against a Rammus, since you need to know where he is 24/7. (Not only for counter jungling, but also for gank prevention)

**
She isn't really that good in the jungle imo. You might not be able to kill her that easily, but she won't be able to stall you enough for her allies to come. Don't fight her, just steal the creeps.

*****
Meh, probably the hardest enemy Jungler for Shyvana's. You can absolutely not kill him, he's fast at clearing, so you won't be able to steal a lot of creeps, and if you do see a chance to steal some creeps, he will probably just be there with his annoying never ending slow, and just when you decide to flash away into safety, he will ult you. Don't counter jungle too much against this guy, unless you have a big advantage.

*****
Another fast clearing jungler who is unkillable. Just like against Skarner's, don't fight him, you won't be able to kill him unless you are really far ahead. He can really screw you over with his pillar, buying time for his teammates to come. Be really careful.

***
I don't know about Udyr, he's really fast at clearing (if he goes phoenix), but you can escape from him pretty easily as well, unlike from Trundle and Skarner. Don't fight him 1 on 1, because it will just take too long. Just go for his wolves/golems. (depending on what side you spawn)

**
Warwick is really slow, so he will never be able to have all of his creeps killed at all time. There enough left for you to steal, so why not do it? Just be careful for when he has his ult, other than that he isn't really a threat to you.

Closing notes
Keep in mind that it doesn't matter if you lose your lane once in a while. Just try to farm as much as possible, steal a buff here and there and you will still be very useful for your team and in team fights.

Oh and don't try to pick Shyvana if the enemy has a Ryze solo top and a Skarner jungler. ;)

Early Game

Explanation
If you feel like it, you can try and steal an enemy buff on level 1. Like said before, Shyvana clears jungle really fast with the AOE damage of her W. Either clear the enemy jungle yourself, recall back and teleport into your lane, or if you don't run teleport, ask for a pull and you'll be able to take any buff or camp and heal up with 1 hp pot.

When in lane, depending on the opponent, you should be able to farm just fine against most solo tops. If you have a weaker opponent, try to harass him as much as possible when you see a possibility, since Shyvana has a really strong early game with sustained damage from her W. Just make sure you farm as much as possible so you can get your wriggles as soon as possible, so you can start counter jungling after your first trip back.

Don't push too hard early game, since you don't have a lot of escape possibilities before you have your ultimate. If ganked, try to walk into the bush, and sprint away with your W. There aren't a lot of champions that can keep up with your movement speed at low level, unless they have a jump or flash. Just farm up and get your wriggles ASAP.

Mid Game

Explanation
Once you have your wriggles and possibly your boots, you can start counter jungling. If you're winning your lane, just push the lane towards the enemy tower, and enter the enemy jungle when your lane is pushed. Make sure your ult is up whenever you counter jungle, so you can easily escape with it, if needed. While counter jungling, you might also stop by in mid lane, and gank there, if there is a possibility. People will not expect it and you might end up turning the tides in midlane.

If you're not winning your lane, you should just stay in lane, and farm up until you're jungler is near you. Try to get a timer on the enemy buffs, and steal them together with your jungler and/or mid when they are up.

Just try to farm as much as possible, just like early game, and make sure you're near the dragon whenever it respawns, or have teleport ready. Farming and dragon control is the only thing you should worry about midgame.

Late Game/Team Fights

Explanation
Late game is kinda easy, just stay near your team, keep Baron in the back of your eye, and try to push as much as possible. Shyvana is really good at both pushing and taking Baron, so try to take as many possible objectives with your team. In teamfights, try to go in first, if people focus you, that's a good thing, since then your carries will be able to shine.

If you have a carry who get's focused a lot, then try to stay near him/her and save your ultimate until people get too close to your carry, so you can push them away from your carries. This should buy them enough time to do enough damage output to make you win the teamfight. If possible though, you should ask your jungler to stay near your carries, since you yourself can output tons of AOE damage in teamfights, and you'd preferably be in the fight.

Last but not least, if running a bit of an AOE comp, you could try to ambush your opponents from the back and push them into your team with your ult. Make sure you're team will do enough damage though, because the worst thing you can do is push the bruisers closer to the carries. If you have a Kennen, Morgana or anything like that, then this can work like a charm!

Shyvana is really strong late game, so just play straight up and you will probably be able to carry your team to victory!

Warding

Explanation
Warding is really really really REALLY important, especially for a counter jungler. You'll need vision over the enemy jungle so you can ensure you won't end up dieing after you took 2 measly golems. Since wriggles is the first item you should get, you'll have an extra ward to boot. Other than that try to buy an extra 1-2 wards every 3 minutes to ensure your safety.

Where to ward?
It depends on which side you spawn on. It's easier to ward if you spawn on the purple team, but just ask your allies to ward with you when you spawn on the blue team.

Purple Team Warding
If you're playing on the purple team, you'll only need 2 wards to ensure safe counter jungling. This ward setup also detects any jungle gank from the jungler. (The only path which remains is coming trough the back of the lane) You should place Ward #2 with your wriggles and try to keep it up as much as possible. Then you can leave ward #1 to the jungler, mid or yourself, you should discuss that with your allies at the time.

Ward Setup
[http://i43.tinypic.com/jiywdd.png]

Ward #1
[http://i42.tinypic.com/2vujarc.png]

I've placed it in the lowest bush so you can get maximum sight out of it. Just make sure all the paths are visible.

Ward #2
[http://i43.tinypic.com/2q9f8ck.png]

Most of the times I place this ward a bit lower, so I can see when the enemy jungler takes the wolves, so I'll be there 60 seconds after he killed them and they respawned. But some people might want it to be a bit higher so they can see the blue buff, and are better protected against ganks, which are possible trough the bush, east from the top turret.

Blue Team Warding
If you're playing on the blue team, you'll need 1 ward more than if you were on the other team, if you want maximum safety. I'd ask the jungler or your mid lane to provide that last ward. You can also manage with just 2 wards, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Ward Setup #1
[http://i42.tinypic.com/16b0d8j.png]

You're safe for ganks, but you don't know what's happening in the enemy jungle. You could walk into a Rammus who taunts you and top could get there to finish you off. Still, you could just counter jungle when you see the jungler gank botlane, but this isn't the ideal situation.

Ward Setup #2
[http://i44.tinypic.com/2hojpkp.png]

This is more ideal, since you can see your enemy jungler whenever he is killing anything on your side. It will cost your team an extra 75 gold, but think about it, you'll be able to counter jungle more, so that makes up for that. And that's some exp and gold your enemy team is NOT getting.

Final Comments

Shyvana is a great champion in the right situation. As long as you're warding well and you communicate with your jungler and mid, you can end up stealing a lot of enemy buffs and creeps without the enemy even getting a chance of defending it. This is still a beta version of the guide, I will add an in-depth strategy guide for possible lane-ups in the near future! Also, I'm pretty sure that I've made a couple of mistakes here and there, maybe some typo's or some flaws in timings. Please tell me if you find some, so I can correct them for future readers! Thanks in advance and I hope you will enjoy Shyvana as much as I do!

you listed chogath twice, one with 2 stars and one with 4 stars.

this does not help your credibility at all. lol.

Runes, Summoner spells, Skills, andmid game need work. Late game and team fights must be separate chapters as they are two different things.

helpful ^^

THANK YOU, the only guide not 100% about jungling!!!

November 3, 2012 - 12:52 AM #5

I play Shyvana top since she came out and i found Sorcerer's shoes and Haunting Guise really viable on Shyvana. Mainly when i farmed well and got 1-2 kill i will buy these coz most of my opponent buy armor because they think Shyvana mainly deal physical damage. And i just laugh at them when i deal "true dmg" on them (by my W,E,R and hits after E on target). What's your opinion about this two item on Shyvana?

August 21, 2012 - 07:45 PM #6

really sucky i will dislike

August 10, 2012 - 07:56 PM #7

The ONE thing I wanted to see in this guide was how to counter-jungle Shaco.

July 23, 2012 - 06:47 PM #8

Great guide, and truly helpful. Especially the part to max E against Q great idea. I manage to completely destroy a Nidale with a few hits of E @ lvl 5 and ulti.

July 19, 2012 - 10:33 PM #9

Awesome guide overall. I really liked the theory for maxin E over Q, and i loved the match-ups chapter (you need to add Shen though).

July 18, 2012 - 09:07 AM #10

hey Sebaku , 1 more thing about maxing E before Q you should include - Passive! : Flame Breath - (your auto atack) Deals 15% of the ability's damage to debuffed targets
