Introduction

What is Renekton ?
Renekton can be defined as an AD melee bruiser.
He's mainly a strong solotop, even if I already saw people play him mid or as a jungler (with more or less success).
I'll try to explain in this guide how I do play him as a solotop.

PROS :
  • High burst
  • Strong laning phase
  • Polyvalent skillset (lifesteal, stun, dashes, armor debuff...)
  • Not easy to counter
  • Great mobility
  • Good pusher
  • No mana

CONS :
  • Sustain is not that high an require you to get in ennemy's melee range to be efficient
  • Not really suited to deal against high HP target
  • Can have trouble if catched off cooldowns

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY HIM ?
  • He's a strong and very mobile top
  • Mid game, if you're not denied too hard, everyone will fear your burst
  • His skillset is polyvalent and very strong, but actually require skill to be used as its best
  • The champion is overall very fun to play with
  • He's an alligator, alligators are cool.

About me

Hello everyone, I'm ct402ftw and i'd like to introduce myself a bit,

  • I'm NOT a top ELO player.
I'm a level 30 summonner with just a bit more than 1150 victories. I play since the S1, but I'm not ranked nor in S1 nor in S2. I know the top-ELO meta differs from our ranked and normal games, these guys are just not playing the same game, and lots of details in their guides doesn't apply to our games.

  • I didn't design this guide for ranked games.
I don't play ranked games myself cause i lack good teammates willing to do so. I experienced some games alone in the well-known Soloqueue. They leads me to one conclusion : I HATE soloqueue. I lost half my games cause of feeders/leavers/no-teamplay guys. As i won the other half cause ennemy trolls were worse than mine, i decided this is not a place I wanted to be, so i play mostly normal premade with my friends or my clan.

  • I don't play for the competition
I play league of legends for fun, that doesn't mean I play bad or I have no interest in winning, that just means I don't like to pick every game the same boring OP champ with the same boring OP stuff just because it's strong.

  • Everything i explain in this guide is my opinion.
This is not the only way of playing renekton, this may not be the best, but this is how I like to play him.

NB: I don't do 1v1 against strangers just to compare who has the biggest one, remember i play for FUN.

  • I play lots of different champs at a lot of roles.
So i think i have a quite good overview of the current metagame I have seen evolve and change through the seansons (at my level of play).

Masteries

The masteries I use are 21/9/0, quite traditional for an AD bruiser with no mana.

(DESCRIBING PICTURE)

  • I take improved Ghost/Ignite/Exhaust according to my summoner spell(s).
  • Then I focus on getting points into CDR over Attack Speed, for Renekton is Ability based and therefore I don't expect to spend a lot of time autoattacking.
  • I rush the 8% ArPen for my damage output is mostly physical and armor is common top.

  • I use the 3 points left to next level in a last point in CDR and 2 points in the Butcher Nastery, for letting a creep with 1 HP under tower is very frustrating and costs some 20-30 gold everytime it happens.
  • Then I take more AD and flat ArPen.
  • I totally ignore the critical strike part, for I most of the time don't need to build Atma's impaler before late game. I don't auto attack a lot, and Atma is the only item i could get with Crit stats.
  • Therefore I prefer some Atk Speed and damages on towers that let you destroy faster that top tower while opponent is back or dead.

  • Next 9 points are spent in defensive stats. I take HP and HP/lvl over HPregen and others for i am not jungling so restisting creeps damage doesn't interest me and I find HPRegen not interesting enough considering i have Q for that.
  • I put 2 points in improved Armor and MRes for it is a generic page, but when I know who i am facing top, I take 3 points in the stat i'll need most and only one in the other.

Runes

What I run :
  • Reds : Flat ArPen
  • Yellow : Flat Armor
  • Blue : Flat MRes
  • Quints : Flat AD

What may also be viable (in some cases) :
  • Reds : Flat AD
  • Yellow :
  • Blue : /lvl MRes
  • Quints : Flat ArPen, Mvt Speed, Defensive stats

ArPen VS AD :
Maths should be done about it, taking in considerations Renekton's AD ratios, ennemy's average armor at levels, Brutalizer and Black Cleaver Bonuses.
If one of you is motivated to do it, I'll be glad to hear the tendency that comes out.
For the time, I play kinda hybrid.

Summoner Spells

Most of the time you want to :

Spells to consider :


Good to escape/chase.


Map mobility, there is a lot of things you can do with that.
Your allies died on an other lane ? TP on tower so ennemy can't take it.
Your ennemy try to backdoor ? TP on tower.
They do Baron/Dragon ? TP on ward (VERY VERY risky if you're alone, but can be extremely rewarding)
They gank an ally in 2v2 or 1v1 ? TP on a minion and turn it into 3v2 or 2v1.
You're killing some tower on a lane and they all ss to come gank you ? TP in safety before they come.
You got harrassed very hard on your lane and you're low HP ? Recall, and TP back full life.
You're lane is fine and you need to buy some items to dominate even more ? Recall, buy, and TP back full life.
IMO, teleport is one of these spells that will never be useless in a game, there may be better alternative, but you'll always find some use to teleport.



Can help you killing people early game, and counter lifesteal/high sustain champions (Warwick, Mundo, Sion's and Soraka's ulti, etc...). I tend to prefer it now over teleport, mostly because I make better use of Q and don't need to back as often as before.


Can help you counter the annoying ennemy carry, help in ganks for securing kills. Useful when facing some hard auto attack champion like xin zhao.


Good to escape some dangerous situation, it can be useful to have another repositioning spell, but i feel there is other spells better than this one, considering :
  • You already have Slice and Dice on a low CD.
  • You should be tanky enough to avoid the need of a "panic button"
But if you like it that much, go for it, it will be useful. (Run for epic mobility)


Didn't really try it since Heal buff, can be useful, but, as you have lots of HP, you won't benefit so much from it. If you want to bait ennemies under tower use this + ultimate, but globally useless for you.


Can help you getting out of some annoying situations, but i don't like it on Renekton, for the same reason i prefer ghost over flash.

Spells you should not take :
You're not a support.
You're not a jungler (And I believe jungle Renekton sucks).
You don't benefit from AS and AP.

Skills

Passive: Reign of Anger
Renekton gains 5 Fury per autoattack. Having sufficient fury empowers Renekton's abilities with bonus effects, but this drains 50 Fury. Out of combat, Renekton loses 5 Fury per second.

"When Renekton is below 50% health he generates 50% more fury from all sources."

Explanation:
This skill is not decorative at all, when you have 50 fury, you can "empower" one of your other skills, and it hurts.
Note that your Q is the best way to get some fury when you're under 50 and in need of it, but over, it will only drain your actual fury.
Basically you want to spend your fury on :
  • Q to regen your HP
  • W to deal maximum damage and stun longer.
  • E to shred high armor targets (people often forget this Armor penetration thing, keep in mind you have it, it's useful when you try to kill a tank)




Q: Cull The Meek
Renekton swings his blade dealing 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+0.8 per bonus AD) physical damage to nearby enemies and healing for 5% of the damage dealt up to 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 HP. Heal amount is quadrupled against champions (20%). Each target hit grants 5 fury.

Fury : He deals 50% additional damage (Total : 90 / 135 / 180 / 225 / 270 (+1.2 per bonus AD)) and heals for 10% of the damage dealt, the healing cap is tripled (150 / 225 / 300 / 375 / 450 HP).

  • Cooldown: 8 seconds
  • Diameter: 450 (estimate)

"Cull the Meek has no cast time and does not interrupt Renekton's movement. "

Explanation:
Bread and butter, deal damage, sustain, grants fury... well, it may not do your homework but for everything else, you have it.
To be maxed first.
Note that the HP regen is much better when you hit champions with it.




W: Ruthless Predator
Renekton’s next attack will swing twice dealing 10 / 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 (+1.5 per AD) physical damage and stunning his target for 0.75 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit effects and grants fury.

Fury : His next attack will swing three times, dealing 15 / 45 / 75 / 105 / 135 (+2.25 per AD) physical damage and stunning his target for 1.5 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit effects, but does not grant fury.

  • Cooldown: 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 seconds

"Ruthless Predator will not damage Black Shield but the stun is negated.
Ruthless Predator cannot deal a critical strike.
Ruthless Predator resets Renekton's attack timer.
Ruthless Predator will not damage the target if Renekton is blinded, but the stun will still be applied.
Ruthless Predator suppresses Renekton for ~0.5 seconds while attacking the target."

Explanation:
Your main source of damage early game, you need 1 point in this.
Thing to remember is that the fury not only increase the damage, it also increase the stun duration.




E: Slice and Dice
Slice : Renekton dashes forward, dealing 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+0.9 per bonus AD) physical damage to targets along the way. If he hits a target he gains the ability to use Dice for 4 seconds.

Dice : Renekton dashes, dealing 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+0.9 per bonus AD) physical damage along the way.

Fury Dice : Deals 50% additional damage (Total : 45 / 90 / 135 / 180 / 225 (+1.35 per bonus AD)) and reduces the armor of targets hit by 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 % for 4 seconds.

  • Range: 550 (estimate)
  • Cooldown: 18 / 17 / 16 / 15 / 14 seconds

"Slice and Dice can be used to cross over walls if they are thin enough.
Using Slice to cross over walls onto a monster will not give you Dice unless you have vision."

Explanation:
Your main mobility skill, you should always try to Slice through something to be able to dice after it.
Basically, you want to harass with a slice through ennemy minions, Ruthless predator, Cull of the meek, then dice back to safety before he can harm you.
Like Ruthless predator, you need a point in it asap.
Don't forget you have Armor penetration on the Fury Dice, it can be useful in some situations.




R: Dominus
Renekton empowers himself with dark energies, gaining increased size and 300 / 450 / 600 health for 15 seconds. While empowered, he deals 40 / 70 / 100 (+0.1 per AP) magic damage to nearby enemies and generates 5 fury per second.

  • Cooldown: 120 seconds
  • Diameter of AoE: 350

Explanation:
This can save your life lots of times, works just like Nasus ulti, increase your HP, deals magical dmg around you, and increase your Fury and thereby, your damage output. Use it when you need to, just like tryndamere's ulti, if you're in doubt about using it, USE IT, a wasted ulti is always better than a death. (Same goes with most of saving ass skills in game)

Skill Order

Max first , then, or , depends if you need to stun more often or dash more often (in doubt, max the dash), get each time you can.

Explaination : Why Q over W ?
It's quite simple, just have a look on the base damage and AD ratios :
Q : 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+0.8 per bonus AD)
W : 10 / 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 (+1.5 per AD)
As you can see, your W doesn't benefit a lot from skill level, but more from AD ratio, as your Q does exactly the opposite. So max Q and get AD for W !

Item Builds

Starting Possibilities :



It's the basic start for a solotop lane, my personal favorite, gives you the movement speed you need to dodge skillshots, or to harass with sustain to stay in lane as long as possible.


Can be good too, you have more HP pool, but less sustain and speed.


When you believe you'll have hard time.

Early Core Items :



This item gives you the HP and damage that you need, it's the defensive part of your core. The proc slow is a bonus, but it's not that good until you turn it into a Frozen Mallet.


This here, is the offensive part of the core, it gives you damage, armor penetration (which combined with your runes and masteries, should let you hit in true damage at this state of the game), and some very welcome CDR, to harass more often and spam more in teamfights.


Buy doran's when in trouble, it's cheap, can be sold, gives you some AD, HP and sustain. If you don't feel the need for it, just skip it.


Pick one according to situation (in doubt, take Mercury).
You could also , but I don't feel this is as useful as the 2 others.

Core Items :



Since rework, this item is a must on a lot of people. Get it, press W, kill things.


Gives you the tankyness you need to stay alive in fights, the slow is very good, and can avoid people running away from you.

Defensive options :


for Armor
An old well-known offtank item of LoL, gives armor, crit, and stack with your Frozen Mallet. not so much to say about it, it's great mostly for it's damage and armor. Feel free to rush early if their AD carry hurts you.

for MRes
The shield comes in handy sometimes, gives MRes and AD, passive is fun, what else ?


This item is for teamfight only ! If you're in soloqueue and your team is not playing as they should be, you should avoid this item, and better buy another defensive item for more tankyness. This item can be excellent, if you're sure to have your team defending your corpse after you die. Otherwise, you'll just see your ennemies waiting for you to respawn to kill you again. This also tends to bring you down in the ennemy's who-we-focus-next list.


I like this item, great defense against auto-attacker. Don't forget to activate it in teamfights.
Useful stats globally.


Some HP and Armor, quite cheap, passive is meh since you don't have any MPen. Prefer it on an AP tank like amumu.

In case you get AP bursted like hell (fed / in game)
For MRes, when Malmortius isn't enough.

Offensive Options :



You have to buy this item only if you feel you can keep the stacks up and only need more damage and sustain, i don't find myself buying it that often, as when i really dominate a game, it's over before i can end my stuff, but this item can help you finish a game. When you find yourself dying too much for keeping the stacks up, just sell it for another one.


Why not ? I bought it once or twice, it worked quite well. Doesn't give as much AD as a Bloodthirster, but the passive compensate it a bit, and the active help you escape or catch up opponents you wouldn't have get otherwise.

Items you should definitely not buy :


That's cheap survivability, yes. That gives a halo for your team, yes. But you're not a support, and not a tank. So leave it to the others and get some more damage/survivability mixed items.
Yes this item does give a lot of AD, but you have no real use of crits and as you don't auto attack that much, it's far too expensive for the use you have from it, and there is also some better choices.
For coop vs ia, maybe, but you're not supposed to steal your carry's kill, and i don't really like stacks items anyway.
(R.I.P.) You're not AS based, you don't auto-attack.
As you already have in your core, i think most of the stats are wasted, the sheen passive is not that great in late game, and i don't feel like replacing some core items for early sheen (where mana and AP are wasted) is worth the cost.
Since its nerf, it's not as useful as it used to be, and as you still have some, you're not entirely based on lifesteal for survivability, but on raw HP and defensive stats.
Meh, you don't spend time auto attacking so not opti at all.

How To Play Renekton

Global tips about his gameplay and how to use your skills :


Yor basic harass combo is : >>>.
Note that you have to Slice through the ennemy minions to be able to Dice back without being harmed. Try not to use the second dash to reach the ennemy, otherwise you'll endure some counter harass. If you manage it well, you can harass nearly every melee champion without getting harmed.
An exception to this is when your jungler come to gank, then you have to use your stun at the time he go out of the bush.

When you get chased, you can trick your ennemies by dashing a first time through them, and a second time away from them, your double dash has quite a long range so that can be life saving. You can use this from a bush to ensure maximum surprise effect.

Know where you can and can't dash ! Your dash range is not that big (not like tryndamere's for example), it can be a bad surprise to see in the middle of action that you can't dash through a certain wall. If you're not sure of where you can dash, just spend some custom game moving around the map and trying to dash on every single wall until you know every place you can dash.
Most importants to remember are : Dragon's/Nashor's dash and base wall dash (which you can only do in a certain place).

Early Game

Objectives :

  • Your primary objective in early game as a solotop is to FARM.
  • Your second objective is to deny ennemy's farm

You can start with either Q, W or R, depending on the situation.
On a standard 1v1 lane against a melee hero, you should go W first, as it will deal tons of damage early game. Search contact with your opponent, stun him, add one or two auto attack, and make him run. You're STRONG in Lvl 1 fights, use it to your advantage.
In 1v2 or if your ennemy have some harass and is able to kite you, you can go for a more defensive option like Q for a bit sustain or W for dodging some skillshots (like swain's for example).
You should have a point in each skill at lvl 3.

Try as much as possible to recall only when TP is up. That'll both avoid you losing farm, and keep a pressure on your lane, especially if he doesn't have TP.

What you should have for stuff :

Focus on getting you core ASAP. Buy some Doran's only if you feel the need for it. Getting Phage or Brutalizer first depends of your needs, choose between HP and slow or more damage and CDR. Getting early rank 2 boots can also be a good idea if you have the gold for it.

(not) pro tips :


Know when to ONLY LAST HIT, i see a lot of people farming with W and E, not only are they wasting an E they could use for harass, but they also tend to overextend a lot and expose themselves to jungler ganks.
Ideally you want to keep the minions just beyond your tower range, if they came in your tower range, the tower could steal you some creeps, if they stayed further, you would make ganks more difficult for your jungler or worse, you would expose yourself to ennemy's jungler ganks. By keeping creeps at this distance, you can safely farm and keep your ennemy exposed to ganks or zone him.

Other thing you can do is overpushing your lane, as you have great escape with your dashes and stun, you can do this without too much risk if no ennemy is missing or if you warded your lane properly. It let you the opportunity to hit the ennemy tower. If you manage to get it down early, you'll be able to go for ganks mid or steal some red buffs in ennemy's jungle. This can be more risky though, so do it only if you know what you're doing.

Use your fury ! Either on Q for sustain or on W for more damage when you harass.

What to do when it goes wrong ?

Stay at a safe distance, use your ++ to depush your lane and get some minion kills, buy some dorans. Try to keep as much as possible the minions in the "safety distance" described before.
If possible, call for ganks. (Don't blame the jungler if he doesn't babysit you, you're an alligator, alligators take care of themselves even when junglers can't gank)

Mid Game

Objectives :

I consider mid-game as the teamfight season. It's when everyone reach his lvl 6, and people tends to gank more, start pushing lanes together, or try to teamfight for dragon. I won't give any timer for game parts, as i think it can change on every game. On some games you can be very passive for a long time, on some others you just start teamfighting at level 3 or 4.
The objective of this part of the games are :

  • Try to secure Dragon for your team.
It's worth it ! If you feel they'll need help, or the ennemy team is going to engage them at it, go for help. Don't hesitate to use TP on a ward there, or on a minion mid to help your mates, that's what you have it for !

  • Try not to lose towers on your lane.
You can afford losing the first tower, but seriously, except against a VERY hard lane, or in a difficult 1v2, this should not happen ! You normally have TP to avoid that kind of problem.

  • Try to have the ennemy's top tower down.
You should use every time your ennemy backs to push and deal some damage to the tower. That's even more true in mid game phase. When you see your ennemy is missing, you can either follow him if he's going to gank, either push your lane as hard as you can to force him back. If you do this though, make sure your lane is WARDED, and most of ennemies are VISIBLE. Doing differently is at your own risks, try to evaluate the gank possibilities on your lane before deciding to overextend.

  • If ennemy's top is down, push lane and go annoy people on other lanes.
Except if you're laning against a very fast pusher (like Mordekaiser), you can push to the ennemy's second tower then go on other lanes safely, try to keep TP up while doing this so you can come back to your lane in case of trouble.

  • If one of your mates lack farm, you can let him your lane for a moment.
During this time, go help where you're needed. You can be very annoying at mid or bot at this moment of the game.

  • Be part of any important teamfight.
That's where you shines, especially mid game, if you didn't fail at your lane, you should be godlike.

What you should have for stuff :

At this moment you should have finished your early core. Start finishing your and . You can also buy an if you intend to .
You should have at least /, and to comfortably attack late game part.

(not) pro tips :

Nothing to add to this part, use your TP wisely, be careful on your map and your positioning in teamfights, try to keep farming as much as possible, and not to let your lane alone for too long. You can also try to gank your own lane when you come back on it after some time away, people often don't expect it. If you farmed well, you should not be afraid to 1v2 or even 1v3 against squishies. Don't over or underestimate yourself, so you'll know when you can stand or when you should run.

What to do when it goes wrong ?

If you got beaten early game, try to focus on farming, don't forget to tell misses, as ennemy's solotop may be fed. Ask for help from your jungler or other lanes, but don't get mad if they don't come, life of a solotop is hard, your jungler can't gank all the time, especially against the offtanks you often find at solotop, they aren't easy targets, and your bot/mid lanes may also have their own trouble. Focus on getting tanky stuff first, get some fast and ( or ). Hug your tower, try only to last hit, and use every time your opponent is away to clear minions wave. If you get denied so hard you can't even reach your early core at this state of the game, ask for a switch.

Late Game

Objectives :

The late game is mainly composed of 5v5 melees, group pushes on some lanes, and Dragon's/Nashor's fights.
You still shines at this part, but, unless you did a brilliant mid game, you tend to be upstaged by the AD carries. At this part, being on your own lane doesn't make sense anymore.

  • Stay with your team, as being catched alone at this part can be deadly.

  • Depending of the team composition it can be your role to engage teamfights.
Either it is or not, you should be in frontline in every melee. This is the part of the game where you primary objective is to break the ennemies carries (either AD or AP). Jump on every squishy damage dealer and hack them into pieces !

  • Try to survive the encounters,
Don't make it a high priority though, as if you die after winning your team a teamfight, it is worth it.

What you should have for stuff :

You should have finished your core, or be about to finish it. This is also where you decide exactly what you'll need for last items.

(not) pro tips :

STICK TOGETHER ! League of legends is a team game, you're nothing on your own against an organized team.

What to do when it goes wrong ?

If you kept farming well at mid game, you should not be too outleveled/outstuffed. Try to be safer in teamfights, you won't dominate ennemies, but you're still dangerous if they let you jump on a squishy target.

Team Fights

Where you should be when it starts :

You should be with your tank, ready to engage or follow him into the battle. You're a frontline fighter, hiding behind is only good for weak squishies, show them all that an alligator do NOT fear !
Well, don't be suicidal too...

Where and when to engage :

Try to estimate the global situation before engaging, consider how your teammates and ennemies are, if they have mana, ultis up, etc. If your main tank engage first, don't hesitate too much, in doubt, follow him. There's nothing worse than being alone in the frontline.
If you really feel that your tank sucks, get more tanky and do the engages when you feel you have to.
Try to ping just before engaging, so your teammates know what you're doing and who you're gonna target first.

Where you should be and what you should do in the teamfight :

You should be in the middle of ennemy's team, jumping all around the place, stunning squishies and using all your skills in middle of the melee to damage a maximum of ennemies. If you start getting to low, either go back if your team don't need you anymore to finish them, or stay in fight til the end like true warriors does ! Don't be afraid to die if it can save your carry's life or secure him some kills.

Chase or not chase ?

Depends on how low you are, who it is, how many teammates survived, etc. I let it to your entire appreciation. Just remember there is some guys you NEVER want to chase...

What if i'm underlevel/understuffed ?

Do the same, jump on their carry and disable him, just don't try to be that mad and to jump all around in middle of them, or you might have a short life expectancy...

Nidalee : You have to care mainly about the spears if she plays AP, She's difficult to catch. she got a safety zone when she's at her Auto Attack range, she will try to keep that distance between you. if she gets too far, she can't attack you which makes the lane a passive farming lane, if she gets too close you can dash her and burst her. Punish her everytime she comes too close, but care if she's lvl 6 and ahead in stuff/lvl, she might just turn in cougar and win the trade (that hurts when it happens), so be careful not to feed her early game.
Care for her traps, they debuff your armor and Mres a lot (up to 40% when trap is maxed), stay away from her if you walk on one. Remember also that her heal increases her Atk Speed, damage can be surprinsing when she starts auto attacking you.

Thresh : Had him once, the lane was easy, he rushed armor, I rushed Black Cleaver.

Introduction should always be the first chapter in a guide, except for the update log. Only the update log should precede the introduction. runes, masteries, summoner spells, and skills all need work. The explanations there aren't very good, nor are they detailed enough to provide appropriate reasoning.
