Introduction

Ryze is a unique champion that scales off mana, making his item build one of the best in the game! He has a rapid fire mash your face into your keyboard playstyle which is extremely satisfying. In the current meta, he is better top lane and strong throughout the entire game with the ability to win against traditionally strong top lane champions.I originally wrote this guide in season 2 but he is now becoming popular top lane so I have vastly updated this guide to explain the matchups.

About the Author

I have been playing this game since 2009 and have been diamond elo since 2010. I still play this game a lot and love theorycrafting. Ryze was one of my mains in season 2/3 and I believe him to be a very strong pick. I am currently in Diamond 1 trying to get to challenger!

Summoner Sets

Primary Set
Good for when you have a favorable matchup. Most of the time in solo queue I would go with this.
Flash & Teleport
Take teleport only if you think you can make meaningful plays away from your lane. Do not take just to teleport to your lane.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
First trip back: tear-of-the-goddess
Core (mid game): sorcerers-shoestear-of-the-goddessrod-of-agessight-ward2
Core (Late game): sorcerers-shoes or mercurys-treadstear-of-the-goddessrod-of-agesfrozen-heart

Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
These are all extremely strong items for Ryze's kit. He gets max CDR because of his Q adds an addition 10%. He gets a ton of mana and health. He gets a decent amount of AP. And also he is very tanky. The only replaceable items are Void, spirit visage and GA, though even Void should probably always be built at some point.

Situational Items

Thornmail
Get this if they are AD heavy. Extremely strong item against the ADC especially with void staff and your E, the thorn will do massive damage to them because of the magic pen.
Will of the Ancients
Get this if you are very ahead and have a tank item or two. Makes you a spell vamp monster.
Randuin's Omen
Sometimes a solid 5th or 6th item if they are attack speed based AD champions killing you.

Skills

Arcane Mastery
This is what makes Ryze have some of the best DPS in the game, while also use the most mana per second (MPS) in the game (lol). Utilize this passive to its fullest to do the most DPS possible (basically just smartcast and faceroll).
This is also what makes Ryze so dangerous with CDR. The lower your cooldowns are, the quicker you can utilize this passive taking 1 second off all of his cooldowns. It also allows for various combos for different scenarios. Whatever skill you use first in an engagement will be refreshed faster than the others (relatively). For example, if you start with your then it will be refreshed faster that it would normally if you started with your . This is useful to know in sustained and longer skirmished which are bound to happen especially in top lane.
For the maximum sustained damage: Q->E->Q->W->Q->R->Q
For maximum CC: (R)->W->Q->E->Q (use this if they are pushed to your side of the map and you want to chase them)
For maximum FLUXORZ: E->Q->W->Q->R->Q
Overload
Your main harassing/damage spell. +auto early game hurts. Always fit in that auto attack before/after Qs for maximum damage, as a huge chunk of early game damage is reliant on auto attacks. Max first.
Rune Prison
Save for critical moments. This is your only CC and therefore very important to use at the right time. Unless you are about to base, only use to go in for a kill or to disengage. Late game this spell has a relatively low cooldown so don't think you have to save it for squishies.
Spell Flux
Many people don't utilize this skill properly. It lowers MR each bounce and it can bounce between you and your enemy. Try to get closer to your enemy if you are trying to maximize damage. The earlier you use this in your spell rotation, the more overall damage you will output due to the MR reduction. Also good for waveclearing especially with
Desperate Power
Very strong ability for chasing, wave-clearing, sustaining , running away and AoE in teamfights. It also takes 1 second off of your cooldowns due to your passive.

Champion Matchups

Darius
Difficulty
Favors You
The movement speed quints will win you this lane. Just keep your distance from his pull at all times and you will win. Not much else to say here. Easy to harass. If you lost this matchup it's because you let him walk up to you.
Drmundo
Difficulty
Favors You
Easy to bully out of lane early on, but if allowed to farm or get kills he will be unkillable and dive you with ease. This matchup is all about the early game. If you manage to not get ganked you should win this matchup if you harass and farm properly. 100% take ignite.
Irelia
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Hard matchup to win due to the fact she can dash to you/a minion, stun you and burst you before you can react. If you harass her, you will be stunned by her . She also gets CC reduction which reduces your rune prison duration. If she gets ganks, you will lose the lane, hard. Make sure to have wards up when you are not at your tower, or know where the jungler is. Her stun will make you a very dead Ryze. She snowballs very well. Your best bet is to take Teleport and try to make plays at bottom lane /dragon. If you think their jungler isn't going to be a factor early, you can risk taking ignite and going for an early kill when you are stronger. But her power spike is around lvl 6/7. Be very cautious at this point. Late game, you are both very strong and it will depend on who has more items.
TL;DR: Farm, avoid ganks, and take TP is the safest route in this matchup.
Jax
Difficulty
Favors You
Easily one of the best 1v1ers in the game. He will scale harder than you into the mid game with equal farm and levels. Once 6 his damage and tankiness go through the roof. Kill him or deny him farm before that if possible. When he uses his dodge, do not auto attack him as it will increase the damage it does. If he uses E at any time always move backwards, you are either being ganked or he is trying to all-in you. Once it is on cooldown, you can safely harass him. If he Qs you, W and take a step back and punish him for it. You will need to push early on so that you can get lvl 2 before him, or atleast avoid farming under your tower, as you will have to waste mana to farm. This is a lane you cannot afford to get behind in. Keep wards up.
Malphite
Difficulty
Favors You
Malphite doesnt scale with MR so he has to disrupt his main items and build MR to lane against you. Your larger mana pool will allow you to trade with him with ease. If he Qs and runs at you, just W him and kite him. If he follows he will just take minion damage and you will win. Just watch for ganks once he is 6.
Nasus
Difficulty
Favors You
Bully him early on and this will be an easy lane. Once you have a large mana pool just spam Q on him until he is low enough to kill. He will be forced to either back frequently or waste a lot of money on potions and MR. He has decent kill potential with a strong jungler though because his wither makes your ult MS boost useless. Use it after he withers or before he is in range.
Renekton
Difficulty
Favors You
The ultimate lane bully. Play cautiously at lvls 2-9 because he is incredibly strong at jumping in and bursting you. He also has great push and sustain. This lane can become quite easy if you are familiar with it though and do the following things:

-Keep the wave off your tower to avoid wasting mana to farm, do this by constantly auto attacking minions early
-Punish him lvl 1 with Q+autos
-If he E's forward immediately W and walk back so that he cannot double dash to you
-Build some early armor especially if you are not doing well the first few lvls
-Farm as well as you can because you outscale him
Rengar
Difficulty
Favors You
A good rengar will be hard to beat without ganks. He will just sit in the brush and safely farm and burst you with his double Q combo. You have stronger poke early levels, but you can't take too much damage from his auto+Q or he will kill you and snowball. Once he has a little bit of AD, watch out for his burst as he can nearly 100-0 you if you dont have armor.
Riven
Difficulty
Favors You
Somewhat of a skill matchup since a good riven will beat you, so be a bit careful of her all-in potential, especially if she gets lvl 2 before you, and at lvl 6 and whenever her ult is up. Otherwise generally just the same as always. Harass, farm, W her if she gets close and increase the distance between you and her. Try to harass when her shield is down. Push early to avoid the lvl 2 rush.
Shyvana
Difficulty
Favors You
You should have very little difficulty in this matchup, besides the fact she can push with her W. But if she does that, you can just freeze the lane and freefarm and deny her. She will never be able to reach you because of your W and your harass will push her out of lane or land you a kill in the first few lvls.
Vladimir
Difficulty
Favors You
Somewhat difficult matchup if you do not get ganks. He outpushes and outsustains you. Your best bet is to get kills on him and snowball. Early on, you have more damage so use this time to your advantage. Take ignite.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
+Strong champion in the current meta
+He scales off mana AND AP
+Tanky build path
+High DPS
+Very good spammable snare
+High Mana pool
+Low skill cap

Cons:
-Gankable
-High mana costs
-Needs good farm/gold income
-Somewhat "boring" (But I don't think so :) )

Runes

I like this rune setup because it offers both early game survivability and excellent late game scaling while not sacrificing damage.

Magic pen reds- best in slot for casters
Health per level yellows(updated to armor yellows for laning survivability)- Makes you even more tanky late game. Mana yellows give you negligible damage.
Flat MR blues- best in slot against AP, can also use mana blues or scaling MR.
Movement speed quints- Makes kiting and catching up to people extremely easy which helps maintain constant DPS. Also helps to avoid ganks. One or two can be swapped out for Armor quints if you are vs a lane bully like Renekton.

Early Game

Use the Q+auto harass technique and try to last hit as best you can with auto attacks to save mana for harassment. The better you can do this, the easier the lane will be as the game progresses. If you know their jungler is a pre 6 ganker, then you need to be very careful to avoid dying as Ryze is extremely fragile early on. Use your trinket at around 2:45 to maximize its effective duration. Once that minute is up and the jungler is MIA, try to push lane and go back to base and get a ward. Most importantly do not die and get farm. If you are not great at CSing on Ryze then focus on those two things. Ryze scales extremely well.

If you can learn to do well during Ryze's early game, you will find yourself winning alot more games with him.

tl;dr Buy one...and farm. Harass when possible.

Mid Game

Mid game is when you should have your core items. By this time you should be play more aggressive vs your lane opponent and winning trades with them. Ryze is a great ganker and you can easily gank by just walking through the lane to avoid wards. With the MS quints you should easily catch up to them. Once you have a kill or you've forced them to back, do dragon with you team. Try to take blue if possible at this point and max out your tear. Ult to clear a wave whenever it is up if you have blue.
If you have teleport, look for opportunities to use it when bot lane needs help and the other team looks vulnerable. Do not use it unless you know you will get kills out of it, or you will give your lane free farm and experience and possibly a tower.

Late Game

By this time you should have your 5 items and be a huge presence in team fights. Try and focus their AP/AD carry while being a huge meat shield for your AD carry. Don't soak up all the damage, but definitely put yourself out there so that you will soak some damage for the squishier people on the team. With frozen heart, you will be able to kill their AD carry pretty easily until they get Last Whisper.

If the game reaches 50+ minutes, you should have max items with your tear turned into a . You should have 300+ AP and max CDR. At this point it is usually the better team comp that wins or the team that gets caught. The AD carry will be doing the most DPS in the game at this point and they are the key player on both teams. The death of an AD carry will most likely mean game over at this point, so your primary job is to either assassinate their AD carry, or protect yours, depending on which team gets the better initiation.

Team Fights

Ryze can have many roles in a teamfight.

1) First and foremost, he is a damage dealer. He can do extremely high amounts of damage to low MR enemies. Look for opportunities to snare these targets and take them out. With max level snare you should have enough time to burst them down along with your team.

2) A tank. Ryze's unique item build makes him extremely tanky, especially with he can be a spell vamp MACHINE.

3) Initiator. Look for low range AD carries like or to walk up in front of their team and snare them, even flash to snare if you need to. You can change the game by doing so. This also works on any squishy though. If their AP is fed, kill them first.

4) A guardian. If you see some fed or or anybody jumping on your squishies, don't be afraid to hang back and protect them. You may be strong, but without your AD carry, you will most likely lose the fight. However, do not blow too much on them as you will need the majority of your burst for their squishies when they get in range.

Mid game it is usually essential to kill the AP carry first as he will have the highest damage output. However this will change from game to game.

Late game however, it is almost always important to get the AD carry. That's your job as Ryze. If you are having trouble against the AD carry get a . But generally until the AD carry has 5-6 full items you should be able to burst them down 1v1. A good snare on them will generally mean death if your team follows up.

Gameplay Videos

GAMEPLAY VIDEOS:
Notice in this clip that I know exactly how much damage I can do while knowing I would not die to tower. Also notice that even though my Q was on cooldown when I flashed, I knew that Ryze's passive would bring it back up by the time I used Rune Prison. It is important to use smartcasting on Ryze for quick situations like this.

In this next clip, I burn my flash for TF's flash because I know he is over extended, but unfortunately I didn't calculate my mana. He gets away, but later on, since Trynd was close and TF didn't back, we get an easy first blood.

I just included this next clip cause I laughed pretty hard when I thought he got away but I ended up with a blue buff a couple seconds later.

This clip shows why Movement Speed Quints are king on Ryze. Without them I would've lost a free kill.

STREAM
Here is a streamer that plays a lot of Ryze. His name is FacefulofRyze and he used this guide to help him learn Ryze and he is currently in Diamond 1. If you want to see this guide in action at a high level of play, go here:

Here is one of his highlights:

Notable Matchups for Mid

General Tips
-Always buy 2 wards everytime you go back.
-Play safe early game
-Coordinate with the jungler
-Get the second blue if possible to farm and harass more effectively

Ryze is possibly the best counter to Ahri. He has superior range harass with his Q and his stun can lock her down from ulting. He has very good sustain and if you get early MR she doesn't really do damage. Just avoid her charm like the plague.

On the other hand, Cass is the best counter to Ryze. Her constant harass and insane range and DPS are better than Ryze early game and possibly mid game as well. It's a good idea to ban her if you first pick Ryze.

Gragas has a pretty weak early game as well, but his range and huge nukes allow him to farm from a distance and steal jungle. He can be very hard to shut down and he will out damage you mid game.

Similiar to Gragas, he has long range and is hard to shut down. His massive Aoe and range can annihilate your team before you have time to react. Your best bet is to coordinate with the jungle to get constant pressure on him. Get a early if you are getting combo'd. Your snare has no effect on him as well when he is in his artillery mode.

Ryze is a good counter to sion because you can QW him which blows his shield before he can stun you. Your spells will be up again before his shield is up, so you will be able to deny him farm and snowball the lane in your favor.

Ryze is a good counter to Kass if you get BV before FH. This will knock out most of his damage and you can just zone him mid game. Early game use auto attacks + to harass and he will only be able to Q you. If he uses his spells on you he will most likely be missing a lot of farm. Make sure you farm better than him and once you get blue just start zoning.

TF is a pretty common pick. Generally people play him wrong and he's easy to beat, but it depends on the skill level of the player. If you are vs a good TF he will just farm from a distance and push lane all day and gank your other lanes. It is important to ward the side bushes to see if hes going to gank so that you can ping and counter gank. Mid/late game you can easily stomp him 1v1. If you get a snare off on him hes dead as long as he doesn't have MS quints.

Another champion that Ryze can match up well against. He loses in the early lvls to him, but once you get tear and blue buff he cannot trade with you, unless he gets an early advantage. As long as you stay even with him in CS and kills, you will win. Ryze's snare will stop vlad from moving while pooled which is excellent if the vlad doesn't know what he's doing and tries to pool out of the snare. Late game if you let Vlad farm he might out damage you because of his ult, but if you aggressive enough mid game you should be able to shut him down. He doesn't have a lot of CC but he can dive you if you are low due to his pool.

Pretty easy champ to beat. He is slow and it's pretty easy to dodge his Q with boots and MS quints. Kite him and move in between spells and you will easily kill him while taking minimum damage. Just make sure your team realizes he can ult and Ryze has no way to stop it. However, if he gets blue early and you do not, he will just out push you and will snowball with more CS than you. If you take control of both blue buffs he will lose horribly.

Almost impossible to beat early on in lane (if Kennen plays right), but Ryze is very good against Kennen in fights. He can snare him while Kennen uses his lightning rush so that he can not get in position to ult and sometimes you can make him waste his entire ult with a well timed snare. Farm as best you can and aim to outplay him in teamfights. Also, once you have your core items, you can easily 1v1 him.

Brand is a somewhat difficult matchup for Ryze if it is 1v1. He has very long range spells, a long stun, and can clear waves very fast. His weakness is that he is vulnerable to ganks if he misses his stun. Try to coordinate with your jungler to gank him. If not, play passive, farm and you will outscale him late game.

Morgana is a very strong laner due to the fact that she has a lot of CC, sustain, and AOE creep clear. However, Ryze can do well against her once he gets blue buff. She has no answer to his low cooldown bursts. Ward both sides of the river to watch for ganks, but you can play this lane pretty aggressive once you reach mid game and you have some items.

Very hard champion to beat if played to her full potential. She has so much harass and utility. With experience you will learn when her ball is out of position and can trade with her effectively. Her auto attacks HURT so do not trade autos with her. I would play this lane pretty safe unless you see yourself with an advantage. This lane varies according to the skill of the Orianna player.

Final Comments

Overall Ryze is a great champion that everyone should know. He is not hard to play and has a unique build that is fun and extremely strong. I have had great success with him in my elo and honestly think he is a bit too strong right now. Abuse him while you can!

Let me know in the comments what you think and what I can improve in this guide! I will constantly be updating it. Thanks for reading!
