Item worth mentioning:
liandrys-torment - Works really well with Morde, spell penetration is really good on him, and the DoT works with his ult
rylais-crystal-scepter - Only if your team lacks CC.
abyssal-scepter- Great VS short ranged champions, or heavy AP teams.
banshees-veil- Amazing vs Burst team comps.
All of these items are viable for Mordekaiser (Some better than others), but they really depend on your opponents and their team setup. I will go through all of these items in the Item chapter.

Introduction - Hue hue hue

Sup guys, my name is Mcwank and i've been playing League of legends since Beta 2009. In S2 i ended up with 2350 elo with ups and downs like any other player. I can play pretty much ALL of the champions that League has to offer but i found Morde to be one of best lategame carries.

Pros:
-Farms amazingly well
-Amazingly tanky lategame without building too many tank items
-Huge single target bursts with dfg
-Ridiculous Baron/Drake cleartime with image up.
-Can't stop him from farming

Cons:
-Weak early
-Easy to gank
-Item Dependant
-0 CC
-Very easy to counter by long-ranged champs in lane(Ahri,Cass...).

Changelog

21.10.2013 - Still playing Mordekaiser sometimes at Diamond 1, not too often, he gets outshined by current assassin metagame but i see him getting a comeback due to assassins nerf!


3/3/2013 - Revisited the guide, played some Morde while smurfing, still viable at any elo(pretty much). Added Liandry's ( great item).
+ Lichbane removed from items, not worth getting it anymore.

Season 3 - Some new items, DFG changes, little less AP etc. Not too big imo. Stick with the old build and considered some of the new items.
27.10.2012 - DFG NERFED, MORDE HURTING THE MOST.... Now either get it as 4th or 5th item or don't build it at all - build LichBane instead. But eitherway, morde will be weaker than he ever was =(.!

Masteries

Masteries that i use most of the time are the 21/9/0 masteries. I find that offense really is the best defense.

The other option which i use only when i feel like i'm going to lose the lane really hard or that i'm gonna get camped is the 9/21/0 setup. But that rarely happens and i pref to stick with the first masteries.

Find out what works best and you will do just fine, it really depends on your gameplay and both teams.

Runes

Straight offensive Runepage just like Masteries, they work like a charm (since the last patch they're even better!), heres the page i use:

The 2nd Runepage is the one i use mostly in combination with 9/21/0 masteries and thats when they have more than 2 AP Carries.

Other runes you can use:
Quints:
Spellvamp - Really good early for sustain.
MS Quints - Good for Gap closing and really good late.
Magic Resistance - Eat even more harass without noticing it!
Spell Penetration - If their team is tank heavy, you should consider these

Yellow:
Armor - Good for top and tanking creeps, id go for Health tbh.
HP Regen - Good for early sustain, if you take these with Spellvamp Quints you wont even notice the health costs!

Blue:
Flat MR - Good early, bad late
Flat AP - Good early too, bad late :c.
CDR - Morde's not that bad with CDR, but i think MR / AP are better picks.

Red:
No replacements, only viable option are Spell penetration ones, don't change them!

Summoner Spells


Because it works so well with your Ultimate and the healing reduction makes sure that your target dies to your ultimate and you get the Ghost.




Flash+QER combo works oh so well, only replacement would be in some rare occasions but i'd take over it anytime.

No-No Summoners:

-If you take this there's something wrong with you(You have no goddamn mana :D)...
-Support spell, you ain't no support!
-Meh, you will probably get So this spell has no use for you.
-If nobody else has exhaust on your team then you should get it, but 99% of the time stick with
-HELL NO, most useless spell ingame
-You better be kidding me, don't even think about it!
-Okay for baiting bads, but you are already playing a Pub Stomping champ, no need to use heal, leave it to the AD/Support.
-...
-Probably worst summoner in-game, its immobile the effects are weak and the CD is huge!
-If you are junglekaiser this is a must pick! (Junglekaiser is bad, has no cc)
-I never even tried this spell once, but im pretty sure its complete sh1t.
-Only good for or or , and thats only when they plan on trolling the game ^^ (huge cd, not worth the spot)
-Spell you should mostly use in premade play when playing HIGH CC Champs like (Absolutely worthless for Morde)

Skills

Passive: Iron Man
30% of the damage dealt from abilities is converted into a temporary shield, absorbing incoming damage. Shield regeneration is half effective versus minions. Minimum shield strength is 120 health, and the maximum is 630 health. The shield decays by 3% per second.

Explanation:
This is what makes Mordekaiser THE MOTHER FUCK1NG MORDEKAISER. You can use this spell to bait people, live forever in teamfights, avoid harass in lane (most important part), survive Ults and , tank baron, dragon, minions, counterjungle without taking damage etc.





Q: Mace of Spades
On next hit, Mordekaiser swings his mace with such force that it echoes out, striking up to 3 additional nearby targets, dealing his attack damage plus 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 bonus damage (+40% of ability power). If the target is alone, the bonus damage is increased by 65%.

Cost 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 health


Explanation:
This spell with on a single target does INSANE Amounts of damage, you can 1 shoot AD carries if they're alone by flashing into them and hitting them with all you got.





W: Creeping Death
Unleashes a protective cloud of metal shards to surround an ally, increasing their armor and magic resistance by 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 and dealing 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+15% of ability power) damage per second to enemies in the cloud for 6 seconds.

Cost 26 / 32 / 38 / 44 / 50health
Range 750


Explanation:
Put this on your initiator before he goes in and increase his tanking stats by a pretty nifty amount, and you will automatically get assists for any target he gets close to.
You can also use it on yourself when you know you are going to get focused.





E: Siphon of Destruction
Mordekaiser damages enemies in a cone in front of him, dealing 65 / 110 / 155 / 200 / 245 (+40% of ability power) magic damage.

Cost 24 / 36 / 48 / 60 / 72 health
Range 700


Explanation:
Your bread and butter skill, you should spam this after lvl 3/5 every time its up. hitting 5-6 creeps and the enemy champion will fill your Shield Pool immediately and make you immune to harass in lane, timing this right before the enemy hits you will win trades in lane (MOST IMPORTANT PART)




R: Children of the Grave
Curses an enemy champion for 8 seconds, stealing 3 / 3.5 / 4% life per second, plus an additional 0.1% per 50 AP.

If the target dies while under the effect of the curse, their soul is enslaved and will follow Mordekaiser for 30 seconds. During this time, Mordekaiser gains 25% of their ability power, and attack damage. The spirit gains 65 / 75 / 85% + (+100% of ability power) of Mordekaiser's adjusted damage, ability power, and 50% + (+100% of ability power) of Mordekaiser's health.

Pets can be controlled by holding the alt key and using the right mouse button.

Explanation:
Best spell ingame as far as im concerned. It gives an Amazing heal, a massive burst, a great DOT, and Image you get not only boosts your damage but the image does more damage than the target you kill with it.
A well placed Mordekaiser ult is GAMEBREAKING and you should always try to Kill their AD Carries or Bruisers with HIGH AD with it.

Skill Order

Like i said, this will be your main spell. Use it wisely! When you see an enemy player preparing to harass you in lane, use to hit the Enemy player and as much minions as you can, this will fill your shield pool and make you ignore any harass thrown at you, and once you get you wont even notice the Health cost from it. Max this 1st.

More shield, more damage, massive nuke with on single target, max it 3rd.

Get in melee range and pop this spell on yourself, you will do AOE damage, gain shield, and gain tanky stats for the next 6 seconds. You can also use it on the intiator to make him take less damage and it will automatically give you assists for any target he gets close to. Max this last.

Level this up whenever you can, this ulti is just amazing like i explained in the Skill chapter, use this well and you will easily carry games by yourself.

Item Discussion

DFG NERF OH NOES.
1. Still build DFG but as 3rd/4th item.
Bonus option!
2. Don't play morde (JK)


Ah finally the good part. When it comes to items is really a versatile champion. You can build anything on him and still become a great threat.

Your main goal early-game should be to get this baby . This will make your spells cost 0 Damage ( they will actually heal you for more than they cost). Works amazingly well with your and .

Boots:
Are the ones i use most of the time, Spell penetration is just ridiculously good on because not all of his spells have a great scale, and thats when you'r spell pen kicks in!
I get these boots only when they have lots of CC (etc.).

-Ah, this item is quite underrated. Why you ask? Because people are fucking retarded, thats why. When they see me starting this with a after my they start bashing me like mad: " Y U NO BUILD LICHBANE IT'S SO GUD!?"
1. Fuck you for being ignorant.
2. Only works in melee range, sure the MS+MR stats are pretty cool but this doesn't make up for the lack of range. ALSO Q DOES LOWER DMG IF THE TARGET IS NOT ALONE(which in teamfights doesn't happen that often).
3. Is affected by spellvamp from .

Lategame with a complete item-build and 600~Ap you will be able to do around 2500-3000 Bursts on their AD's which will most of the time instantly wipe them out and win you teamfights.

- Since the nerf, dont bother buying it, doesnt give MR anymore, it does less damage, its impossible to survive as glasskaiser in melee range.

- Against 2 or more AP carries this item is great, the Spell pen will greatly increase your damage and give you enough survavibility to survive their burst with a well placed .

- I end up getting this item as my last item 90% of my games, really good against balanced teams.

- Your 4th item, right after , don't skip it, EVER.

- Lategame item when they start stacking Magic Resist.

- Get this item if their AD/Bruisers are hurting you real hard, also extremly good to avoid spells from ETC...

- If they have alot of CC from champs like ETC. If you get don't get because you will end up lacking DMG, and you don't want that.


- Well WotA got nerfed, still a good item but you should not rush it UNLESS you have at least 1 more champ on your team who benefits from it (carry), otherwise stick Revolver until you complete DFG (some cases abyssal) and then finish up WotA.

- Works sometimes against heavy AP. Deffo worth buying if you get focused too much.

- Extremly cost inefficient, the amount of AP/HP it gives is not that high ( is a better survavibility choice).
BUT There is a case when this item is worth buying - When your team has Low or Absolutely 0 CC, then the slow gets in handy, just like building Mallet instead of Warmogs on bruisers.

No-No Items:



- Another extremly cost inefficient item, they traded 40aoe dmg (30 if opponents have any MR) for Hp/Armor. Do not get this item on MORDE, EVER!.

Morde and the Enemies

counters alot of champs but get's countered by plenty of them as well.

Champions that counters in lane:
All of these champs just get ravaged by Morde's shield because of their Short range or not enough poke, you should not have any problems with these guys, but still beware of jungle ganks!


Difficulty: Unbeatable

Just a completely broken champion, if you get hit by her root just ONCE after she hits level 3, you will Die. Only thing you can do is cry for jungler to help or try to farm up somehow without getting poked. And if you do fight her, make sure you are in range to hit her with Q, because ER+DFG ignite wont be enough to burst her.


Difficulty : Easy/Hard
Shes similar to Akali, easy to beat before she hits level 6, after that all she needs to do is catch you without your shield with her Q and you will die. But luckily she drops off lategame so you can actually beat her with just enough patience.



Difficulty: Hard

Outranges you ridiculously hard, early game she might even zone you out if she hits a Q+2e's combo, dont get poked! Keep farming with your and if she menages to apply poison on you hit as many minions as you can with to reduce the harass to least as possible.



Difficulty: Medium

Update: She got nerfed-> Easier to lane against.
Bigger range than you, her W can pierce through your shield very easy and she will still have Q+W to poke you down, dont drop under 50% in lane if you dont have escape/ult or you're dead... Stay behind the creepwave so you avoid her Charm, if you get hit by her Q try the avoid the part when its coming back, thats when it hurts the most. Figure out what she maxes, W or Q and play accordingly.



Difficulty: Hard

His E breaks your Shield, thats all that is to it... He will Q+E You and W when he can, with a full shield you'l end up losing around 30%(50% if you dont have a shield, even more) hp @ lvl 5. Stack up on health pots, wards and dont initate on him 1v1 when hes full HP, you will not win the fight.



Difficulty: Easy

Huge range again, only thing that makes this champ easier than / is that hes alot squishier, hitting him 1-2 with 1-2E right before you hit lvl 6 will easily grant you a kill, DON'T GET POKED BY HIS CARDS - If you dodge his cards successfully you should have no problems winning him in lane.
Clearing a wave and getting a jungler to gank just at that point when you can flash in with will grant you a kill most of the time due to his squishyness



Difficulty: Medium/Hard

Once again, huge range, and huge bursts, all you can do vs this guy is wait for your jungler OR try to farm better than him and dominate him lategame.

- Once again, bigger range than you, don't get poked and farm till lategame fighting him once he gets 6 without help might be an issue, if you dodge his Q and 1 part of R you will end up winning the fight or forcing a flash atleast.



Difficulty: Hard

Her burst is just crazy, don't let her chain combo you, i would advise you to run with + like against Veigar to avoid at least a part of her burst. Keep your shield up at all times and push the lane, she farms very bad under turret and will deny her from kill you or roaming.



Difficulty: Medium/Hard

You can trade with his W's with almost always winning it, but he will beat you 1v1 after 6 almost everytime if you are uncarefull, Talon is a pretty decent Morde counter, but you should be fine lategame if you don't die in lane too much.

You might wanna start with and Armor runes instead of HP ones if you know you are facing him in lane.



Difficulty: Easy-Hard

Ryze is a champ that can be both easy and hard, it really depends how well you trade with him, don't stay in too long when your E is down or you will lose the trade every time, if you win trades you will win the lane 100% by lvl 7.



Difficulty: Easy/Medium

Keep your shield up and dodge atleast 1part of his combo at lvl 6, don't let him outpush you but don't push if he isn't doing it unless you know their jungler position.



Difficulty: Easy

Keep strafing left/right and you will be good to go, this champ should never beat you 1v1 so care for junglers - she will ask for help!



Difficulty - Early: Easy, Difficulty - After 6: Medium/Hard

Trade with her Q's, in her shrouds, her when she comes close to auto hit you (keep shield up) and you will win the lane most of the time.



Difficulty: Easy

All he can do is farm, you won't lose to him 1v1, but beware of jungle ganks, just keep pushing the lane and don't let him outroam you (Keep warding like mad!), you should dominate him entirely lategame.

With your shield up you will almost completely negate his damage, just dont stop pushing and keep warding!



Difficulty: Medium

You will win trades with him every time, just stand back behind the creep wave and wait for him to Q, when he does you E him, after 6 dont drop under 50-60% or he will probably kill you - same for him, if you see him drop under 50% your QER+Ignite combo should kill him easily. Lategame i advise running (to cleanse his stun) + to be immune to his ult, after he fails his ult you should dominate the game without a problem.



Difficulty: Medium/Hard

Just keep farming, you are 2x stronger than her earlygame but dont get poked by her R+E Combo at lvl6, if you eat it twice she should be able to kill you. Only way to counter Anivia is to farm more than her, and try coordinating with your jungler to gank her when she has Blue (it will really fuck up her early game).



Difficulty: Easy

Pretty easy to beat, like against Lulu/Brand keep moving and dont take too much poke, you should really stomp her in lane and especially during Mid/Lategame. Never had problems with this champ and neither should you.



Difficulty: Medium

You cant kill him, he can't kill you (1v1 that is (unless 1 of you fucks up really bad)), don't get ganked and keep farming, don't let him roam without you doing the same, lategame you should be stomp him if you get the image of their AD Carry... Getting QSS or Merc treads is a good choice against Galio.



Difficulty: Medium/Easy

Keep moving, don't eat Q's when there are no creeps around you and poke him whenever you can, if he isn't careful you should really beat him to a pulp during the lane, don't get walled midlane or he will ravage you. One of the champs that can actually keep up to your farm and be an amazing threat lategame regardless of how bad he does earlygame.

Early Game - You better shut me down

During the earlygame your main goal is to Farm, farm, farm, farm, farm and so on. Make a goal for yourself to reach a certain amount of Creep Kills by 20min, my goal is mostly 150-200.

Once you reach Level 4, you should start warding the Enemy wraiths, and your wraiths. Best way to become a beast is to invade their jungle without dying every 60 seconds.
Talk to your jungle before the game starts and tell him you will need his wraiths after lvl 4/5, if he agrees on it, let the farmfest begin! FARM!

By lvl 4 try getting ++.

Beware of jungle ganks, junglers like Can completely ruin your early game and you might not be able to comeback fast enough.

- Watch out when she get's 6, her burst isn't as high as Leblanc's but don;t underestimate her, with a minor help from a jungler she can kill you early. Easymode lategame tho ^^ if you get a .

Warding - Key to winning

These are the places you should ward whenever you get the chance (Focus on warding Wraiths most of the time).

If you are one of those guys that thinks like :"My support should ward, why should i bother doing it", then fuck you! You HAVE to ward your lane, to avoid getting ganked and to stop the enemy AP carry/Jungler to gank Bottom/Top lanes through you'r own jungle.

Wards are never a waste of gold, don't forget that, not only you will save your lane but you will save other lanes as well!

Mid Game - Danger Lurks Ahead

KEEP FARMING! This is where becomes extremely dangerous. Keep clearing your lane whenever minions come, and start roaming, your + Should be able to ravage people by this point and get free drakes+turrets.

Keeping a ward or 2 during this point of the game is essential, with them you will be able to clear wraiths without fearing of enemy team.

Late Game - The Beast Unleashed

DON'T STOP FARMING!
This is the point where you will be a bigger threat than any champ in the game, they will try to shut you down at any costs and your job is not to let em do it before you shut down their AD carry. If you die without bringing 1 Enemy carry down with you, you can consider yourself a bad Mordekaiser player.

Talk to your tanks all the time, never stop farming or warding the map. Biggest mistake that Bad Mordekaiser players make is that they rush in trying to pop their combo without paying attention to their position or the enemies, and end up dying and losing the game - YOU ARE NOT IMMORTAL, STOP RAMBOING!

Team Fights

AVOID TEAMFIGHTS, KEEP FARMING!

Hehe, just kidding.

Stay behind, do your shit whenever you get the chance, wait for their AD to lose some HP if you are unable to solo burst it down. HELPING YOUR SUPPORT WARD THE MAP IS THE KEY TO VICTORY! Don't overextend, don't facecheck, let the tanks intiate and follow up with your combos, don't stay in for too long or you WILL DIE.

Roam around, gank lanes with Flash+Ult+Ignite, help with dragons, help your jungler, help your teammates,
If you reached the lategame point you will be able to 1shoot their carries if they care uncarefull, so in, them, then do this combo in this particular order: and watch their AD Carry come to your side, theres nothing else to it.

Mordekaiser Gameplay

Heres one of many games that i've played, not really a good one but this is the last replay i had left because recently i wiped em, showing basics of farming and some pubstomping at ~2.2k elo. Hope you enjoy it!

Not a game i'm particularly proud of, but its SoloQ... SoloQ games tend to be full of disrespectful players (I should know, i was one), trolls.






I've had a bunch of video requests, but since i really don't have the time to Record my Replays and upload them here (will take around 6-7 hours =(!). I will just give you the links to download these replays, will be much faster and easier for me, and better quality for you guys.

Not the best games, had lots of mistakes, but these are the only few that are still working and worth uploading.

All of these games are at 2000-2200 Elo.

Final Comments - Never stop farming!

I carried myself from 1800 to 2200 in matter of days playing Mordekaiser 80% of the games. Don't go top with morde because most of bruisers counter him in lane, and top lanes are alot easier to gank than the mid lane.

I think that Rejuvenation bed + 4 pots + 2 wards is better becaise then you have it more safe for jungle ganks.

You have a great guide ,taking apart it , what are your thoughts in starting with Rejuvenation bed + 5 pots + wards ?

@Amarajah - you're right it doesn't i somehow forgot to mention it, also i replace the item by the end of the game with gunblade or wota. I get it early game because its amazingly cheap for the stats it gives

Pretty sure Spirit of the Spectral Wraith only increases damage to "MONSTERS", which is the jungle monsters only, minions are counted as a difference creature entirely that doesn't apply to the 30% increased damage passive, so the butcher passive will only help with taking yours or the enemies jungle creeps as extra farm. It was changed this way with the reduced damage from creeps mastery too from s2 so that now it only applies to the jungle so you can't freeze lanes easy anymore.

Koali, against AD matchups just run cloth armor + 5 pots, rush armguard. Usually defense masteries.

Also spirit of the spectral wraith causes you to do more damage to minions, meaning you can clear jungle camps much faster, also you will clear the waves faster due to having more damage to minions, which automatically increases the amount of shield you gain with your passive.

WoTa is extremely cost ineffective unless you're running a double/triple AP setup.

Ninja tabi works against full ad teams, otherwise i wouldn't get it.
