Welcome to my Volibear Solomid Guide

Let me start off by saying, Hi, hello, hola, Hallo, sha'lum, ciao, etc. Now lets get down to what you came here for. You want to eat, rape, destroy, and/or rip people apart. Unfortunately, it is forbidden in 51 states (that includes the hidden one). So you take out your rage and short comings on people on the internet. The way you do this, is by playing a bear, known is Volibear. Unfortunately, you struggle with learning the path of the bear. However, there are multiple ways to go about playing him.

In this guide, you will learn how to play very tanky, and very defensive. This is not a balls to the wall guide, because I feel that even with defensive masteries, volibear can do some insane burst damage to just about any champion at any point in the game. He falls off a bit late game, as he doesn't scale as well as some of the popular solo top champs, but as you probably know a fed volibear isn't anything you want to go up against. If he gets fed early he is basically unkillable and will thrive in your teamfights, resulting in a 20min surrender.

This guide will not only teach how to do tons of damage, but it will teach you how to do tons of damage. Before reading this guide, please become up to speed on volibear with his Champion Spotlight

Masteries

WILL EDIT WITH MORE LATER SONS!

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS DEFENCE TREE OP.

Runes

Attack Damage Reds:

Alot of people mistake frenzy for magic damage so they go high in offense for the magic pen. It simply is not, it is pure physical damage. The magic pen that people go into the offensive tree for is simply for your ult and nothing more.

Attack Damage reds are the standard. Another alternative is attack speed reds, which combined with your ultimate do alot of damage. Armor Pentration are viable but I would choose the other 2 before ArP.

Armor Seals:

This is the standard. You will more than likely be fighting a top lane AD bruiser. If so, you have to use these 100%.

If you are not fighting an AD bruiser, and fighting someone like Vlad or Kennen, I would get Seals of Vitality. They are your best bet against a champion like those.

MR per level Glyphs

This is needed for late game more or less. If you are fighting somebody like Vlad or Kennen, and expect early game AP damage, I would switch to flat MR.

Attack Damage Quints

Nothing else I would choose except for ArP. Flat AD makes the most sense.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

These are personal preference. Before, I would go Heal Ghost on volibear, due to his passive being awesomesauce. But since the nerf, I think Ignite flash or Ignite ghost is the way to go.

Ignite / Ghost is definitely a top tier combo now days on any solo top lane. Flash has become such a standard now days that people assume that you need to run flash always, but personally top lane the way it is benefits from ghost the most I feel.

All champions can benefit directly from a summoner spell. Kennen and Morgana for example, can simply flash into a champion and ult them and their team for maximum damage, while ghost on somebody like Olaf or Volibear can help catchup to somebody who does use flash.

Heal Ghost was definitely top tier on volibear but it simply isn't worth it anymore now that heal has been nerfed. If this is your preferred style than go ahead and continue to use it, but I would suggest definitely going into the Heal Ghost masteries or it would not be ideal.

As for

I feel like its definitely viable but you have to have a reason for getting it. For example, your team can coordinate and ward dragon, while you push top to tower. Then, they can start dragon and you can teleport to the ward. If the enemy team wants to contest, they will have to fight a 4v5, Unless their top has teleport as well. Using your teleport to get back to your tower can be good if you dont plan on being in top lane for most of the game. If you use teleport so that you can recall more, you are bad, and should probably break out of that habit. I would suggest avoiding teleport in solo queue.

Skills

Passive: Chosen of the Storm
Heals volibear for 30% of his Maximum Health over 6 seconds when he drops below 30% Health.

120 second cooldown

Explanation:

Admittedly, Volibear needed a nerf bad. Like, real bad. His nerf increased the CD on your passive to 2 min. I think that is still amazing because of the fact that is somebody attempts to gank you and get you low enough, the regen from your masteries and passive will keep you farming until the CD is down. Unless their jungler camps you out, you should have no problem.

This is essentially half of a mundo ultimate - in a passive.

Q: Rolling Thunder
Volibear gains 45% Movement Speed while moving toward enemy champions. Lasts 4 seconds.

Volibear's next attack deals an additional 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 physical damage and flings the target behind him.

12/11/10/9/8 second Cooldown

Costs 40 Mana

Explanation:

Think Singed, except this is a fucking bear. And he goes fast. When you hear the roar, and he starts charging at you, your first instinct would be to flash out and get away right? Wrong. The straight up fear volibear puts in your heart as he charges at you completely nullifies someones will to survive. They give up inside.

YES, this spell can be considered Volibear's 'personal' ghost spell. However, it does of course stack, making any enemy top laner who thinks hes getting away with his ghost a very wrong, wrong sad individual. Ghost doesn't have to be used in conjunction with your Q, if you need to get away and it's on cooldown, you have the option to play however you want.

If your jungler wants to gank for you, don't let him initiate. Use Rolling Thunder to initiate everytime. He will probably flash out, so hopefully you do enough damage or your jungler has exhaust. If someone uses ghost vs volibear, your Q + ghost will be able to catch up to him and give him da flips.

W: Frenzy
Passive: Volibear gains 8% Attack Speed with each attack. Stacks up to 3 times.

Active: When Volibear has (3) stacks of Frenzy, he can bite an enemy to deal (90/140/190/240/290) (+20% of bonus Health) physical damage, increased by (1)% for each (1)% health the target is missing.

Cooldown 18 Seconds

Cost 35 Mana

Explanation:

Holy damage batman. A lot of people mistake this for doing magic damage, it isn't. This is maxed first so you have the maximum amount of damage and attack speed for when teamfights erupt.

Basically, for the simple man, you auto attack three times within a certain time period, and this skill will come up. You press W, and win. If that doesn't work, do it a few more times.

E: Majestic Roar
Volibear deals (60/95/130/165/200) (+60% of ability power) magic damage to nearby enemies and slow them by 30% for 3 seconds.

Cooldown 11 Seconds

Cost 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 mana

Explanation:

So, Volibear doesn't have an actual combo like Ryze for example, but the general and common combo to do, is to Q your enemy, charge at him, flip him, and E immediately after. Follow that with some auto attacks for Frenzy and the deeps is pretty impressive. The real reason behind why this spell is good, is because early game, before you get your slow item, you give limited escape capibility to your opponent. When you flip them, and Majestic Roar, they are slowed for 3 seconds. They will try to flash or ghost as soon as you flip them, so that is why hitting E is so important.

If they flash away, and you hit your E, they are still stunned. That gives you (and your jungler if they are ganking) enough time to catch up and lay down the damage. If they have ghost, its even worse for them, because they will still be in melee distance until the slow wears out.

R: Thunder Claws
Volibear channels the storm, causing all basic attacks for (12) seconds to deal (75/115/155) (+30% of ability power) magic damage, which chains to 4 nearby enemies.

Cost 100 Mana

Cooldown 100 / 90 / 80 seconds

Explanation:

This Ult makes me laugh. This + E is the reason people go magic pen in the offense tree. There is nothing better than being in lane and having your opponent run away from you, behind their tower at low health, only to be killed from volibear attacking one of the creeps in their train from the nexus.

Attack speed is what makes this do so much damage, which is why you don't need attack speed early on. This Ult really won't do much damage until level 11, which is around the time team fights start to commence anyway.

Skill Order

I will use this section to sort of explain the reasoning behind the early skill order.

Level 1 gives you the ability to be mobile and it sets you up well if you are defending a jungle invade. The real reason of getting this is setting up for...

.. this. You get this level 2, and if your jungler decides to level 2 gank for you, which is literally the only thing that will save you from somebody like teemo harassing you all day. What good is having Frenzy level 1 or 2, if it gives you kill potential and attack speed, but you cant hit anybody?

Ok, so I've explained the thought process behind those two spells, at this time they are considered the utility spells. From level 3 on, you max this badboy, so when top lane wants to trade with you, laugh as your frenzy makes them crap themselves.

Ult is obvious enough, although its not the greatest ult, it is still worth getting at 6,11, and 16.

Item Builds

WILL GO MORE INDEPTH LATER ON WHEN I MASTERY THE CRAFT OF VOL-EE-BEAR

Facing Enemy Champions

Ok, so somebody has to fight you, it has to happen, lets just see who the common matchups are and how you can destroy them.

MOST OF THESE WILL CHA

She is squish, any time she is out of her stealth field she is in danger.

You either first blood him with help from your jungler and get an early gank on him, or bully him from farming BEFORE he gets tanky or he will be unkillable. He gets really tanky, and unless cho gath gets behind, the only thing you can do is afk farm or you will be wasting your time.

Shes bad.. so bad..

He can poke at you all day, run away from you and kite you, and be annoying to fight against early game. Hes gonna be farming most of the time with his parley, but when its on CD, hes gonna have to walk up to a minion to kill it. If he does that, pull him in and use your combo. He is gonna have to drop everything he has to get away. There is a sweet spot with GP where at level 4-5 he wont have his ultimate and you will have 2-3 points in Frenzy. Try and bait his ultimate, but make sure not to fight in it. Usually easy fight.

Honestly I don't know what to say about garen, he really isn't used very much, but I do know that he can probably out damage you in a 1v1, so try to farm as much as possible without taking damage. If he spins toward you, use your q to get him to take tower hits.

Seems pretty easy to be honest, I dont think he can 1v1 you efficiently enough, and he really isnt used top lane very often compared to his jungling. New Season 3 he is rarely ever used top but he is still squishy.

When he jumps on you, use your E and slow him down. Than get a couple of auto attacks in before Qing him. Your frenzy will be up soon so you can use that asap. If he stands and fights you, and you think you can win, pop your ignite and ult, and if he flashes away just flash/ghost towards him and flip him before he jumps away. Most of the time though, jax will be stronger than you. Ganks are pretty easy on jax if your jungler has exhaust. Ganks are best against jax pre level 6.

A well played Kayle can do very well vs volibear all game. early game she will poke you as hard as she can. Dont let her do a ton of damage. Its ok to miss cs and not get chunked by half. ask for early jungle help pre 6 so she doesnt get ULT. She doesnt have a natural getaway except for her speedup so you should be able to pick up the kill. Kayle is another rare occassion that isnt used very often, but is coming back.

A good Lee Sin (which these are based off of assuming the enemy is moderate or good) will win vs you in lane most of the time. If you Q him he will just W away or shield himself and fight you, there is really never a time when volibear has the edge, but its not a hopeless fight. Comes down to who plays the matchup better and who gets more help from jungle.

Very recently a popular champion, due to all the success in recent tourneys, and vs volibear both get really tanky. Mainly a farm fest, although pre-6 he has no natural getaway so you could possibly kill him if you use armor pen runes.

All nasus is good for is farm. Once he gets fed, there is no stopping him. If they have picked nasus, do yourself a favor, and dont play volibear, just pick teemo and win the lane all day. Volibear can do fine against nasus, but if you are getting ganked, he will slow you down as you try to Q out of there, and you will most likely die everytime. My best advice if you have to play vs him is to ask your jungler for a quick top lane gank so he gets behind later. Every time he walks up to a minion to farm, pull him in and combo him. Oh, and never play nasus.

I still don't feel comfortable vsing a nidalee. She will poke you level 1-6 and once she has her ult she can just pounce away from you if you try to charge her. Definitely try to get ganks in pre-6. Start out with boots first, even though her spears won't be doing that much damage to you. Once you have ninja tabi the AA will feel like tickles and if you have ninja tabi before she is 6 you can pretty much guarenteed get a kill.

So, goatman is a pretty good top lane. Technically on paper he gets "countered" by voilbear due to the one thing true damage cannot do well against - a fuck ton of health. However, you dont have that much health until you build your Warmogs and FM, so early to mid game olaf has a very real chance of killing you, so if you see and hear that olaf gets countered by volibear, its not true, its a dumb perception based in numbers that do not matter as much as you might think. An olaf can max his Q or E and still do a LOT of damage to you.

Don't see alot of Pantheons now days, but his spear is the only range he has and it does no damage on volibear. If he jumps on you and he is alone, combo him, and he will feel really stupid. Even with the changes to Season 3, pantheon stands no chance.

Sometimes you will see ryze top because people think he should be top. He shouldn't be top vs you. Although his W will be really annoying if you try to charge in, he will just lock you in place. Theres no real challenge here, he will get stomped.

A very mediocre matchup. I dont think shen will try to harass you because you will regen anything he throws at you. At the same time, if you try to charge him, he will dash away, and any trades he will shield himself. Later on, he will get tankier than you, and become unkillable if fed in 1v1s.

She will probably lose most trades, if you fling her she will just use her AoE and E you and twin bite combo and back up, but you do tons of damage.

Fuck Yorick.

This guy is an asshole. He really is. He will make everything about love and life impossible for you. Essentially blind you when you go to cs, and he will poke and harass you when you walk up to hit creeps. Do yourself a favor, and if teemo is picked before you, do NOT pick volibear. It isn't even worth the frustration.

Only trade when he attacks you Post Level 6. Before he gets his ult though, you might want to initiate on him before he gets ridonkulous crits and lifesteal.

Bearception. Just flip each other at the same time and laugh about it over a nice cold drink.

Rumble is a popular pick now days and he likes to pick his opponents down slowly. This is good if you play volibear, because of your insane regen. Also, tell your jungler to camp top if he wants free kills. Just toss and combo rumble, and he probably wont get away alive. Volibear does very well in this matchup if played aggressively.

I would trade with her up until level 6, where she can essentially burst you down completely. Just trade with her and try to damage her enough to make her recall back.

Fizz basically counters what we try to strive with in this build, and that is good sustain, great regen, and maximum farm. DO NOT even attempt to kill him if you are below 40% health, unless he has less than 100 or so health. (this isnt a lane matchup, just fyi)

He sort of reminds me of Volibear to be honest because he isn't a very popular champion, although very good. Just try not to let him dash in on you and harass you.

Obviously you are going to need to build MR, but he has good sustain like you do. You can outduel vlad most of the time. Expect him to poke you, and defend his harass until level 4 where you can kill vlad no problem.

The whole idea of this guide is to survive early laning with your sustain and to be a big burly monster tank later on. Irelias sustain cant compare to volibear, and you can 1v1 irelia pretty much the entire game. A very good counter to her.

Darius is just really good at what he does, his passive kinda shits on your passive, add to the fact that once he gets you low enough to proc your passive, he will most likely follow it up with an ignite, slowly down your regen to almost nothing, and dunking you with ult. Not a good matchup.

Although alot of people do not play her very well, she has potential to be good at top, but as it stands she is really squishy and not even close to beating volibear 1 on 1 without jungle help.

Early/Mid/Late Game

Levels 1-6 - Generally you will be farming most of the time. It really depends on the champion you are fighting against. There are multiple examples of what you should be doing early game and how you can decide what is best.

Example #1: Teemo is very good vs Volibear, and if you are stuck playing vs him, the best thing you can do is stay back, far away from his range and try your best to farm. With someone like teemo, you might want to ask your jungler to do an early level 2-3 gank so that you can get ahead in level + farm.

Another example is somebody like Rumble who doesn't do very well against volibear. He will have more health and be more tanky than rumble, and you can trade 100% of the time with him. This means you should ward and watch out for ganks and zone rumble for exp and farm. This is a fight you will probably win all the time, so while you should always be farming, you should look for opportunities to get a kill. There is a lot of kill potential in this example.

The final example is somebody like Cho'gath, where he can be very weak levels 1-4, and can be a gank opportunity, he simply will take no damage after that. He will become very tanky and instead of wasting your time trying to kill him, you should dedicate your time to 100% farm

The best thing you can do for yourself level 1-6 and judge where you stand in top lane, and act accordingly.

Levels 6-11 - Volibear will become tankier, and the best thing you can do, is again, farm, but what you want to focus on, before you hit 11, is to max out your bonus health cap on your Warmogs as fast as humanly possible. You don't want to take any risks. If you are unsure of something, or you fear their jungle, play passive until he appears on the map. Also, look out for opportunities throughout the laning period. If you have been trading with someone top and they are at half health, and you see their jungler mid or bot lane, go balls deep and combo them.

Levels 11-18 - This is where Volibear shines. Early levels 12-13 are generally speaking when team fights erupt due to someones tower being down, taking objectives, etc. You want to be aware of what your team is planning on doing and adjust accordingly. If they want to take dragon soon, push your lane so that you can head down to dragon and help them. Once you get reverie, You will be able to initiate even better than before.

In team fights, you always want to be the center of attention, no matter what. You want them to focus you down while your team does most of the damage. That is the role of a tank. However, that doesnt mean that you have to die like a hero. On a 5v5 scenario, if you get a successful pull from your Q, it is almost a guaranteed kill for you and your team. With that, you can either get baron, take a tower, or do whatever objective there is to do.

Final Comments

Overall, Volibear is a bear. He isn't a very popular champion even though he's very strong. Hes a good top to pick if your team lacks tanky champions. He can be main tank or off tank / dps etc. Ranged champions will have a fun time laning vs him, but overall he is a very solid champion to play.

He is a great champion to play especially in solo queue because most of the time you can't rely on your teammates to do absolutely anything, therefore, you can sit back and relax top lane, get farm, than comfortably pentakill their team when the time comes.

If you have any questions or ideas, leave them in the comments.
