Introduction

Hi, my name is JiYung and I'm a platinum mid/support player. I really like Galio because he totally rocks team fights and he farms easily. I play him as a melee, range, tanky dps, mage, assassin... just kidding. I play him as a tanky ap initiator. He is best picked in an AOE double ap comps rather than in a regular comp, because of synergy. In this guide, I will show you my way to play this beast.

Pros:
  • Easy farming
  • Strong ultimate
  • Many CCs
  • Can heal himself
  • Can cast spells for allies

Cons:
  • Vulnerable if you miss your spells
  • Gets harassed easily early game
  • His ultimate is easy to halt
  • Long cooldowns

Since I don't use M.Regen runes or masteries anymore, I can easily compensate with this. The wards are necessary because you will be slightly more vulnerable to ganks since you won't have your boots.

Very nice item on Galio, the Tenacity is good, because people will throw CC on you to prevent you from initiating, or to stop your ultimate.

The active isn't so useful on Galio, but this is pretty much the only item for mages that provides armor.

The shield is nice if they can't easily remove it with pokes. With this, it will be harder to stop you from initiating.

Great passive for his ultimate and nice amount of HP. However I have decided to replace this with because it gives much more damage and has only 300 less health. Worth it, IMO.

Doesn't seem so good. Galio's cooldowns are too long to make its passive useful. Unless you plan to chain your abilities like a Lee Sin, I wouldn't buy this. (I never tried those, actually)

I use Flat M.Resist Gylphs, Health/Level Seals, and MS Quints

Quints:
The MS quints are necessary to make positioning easier and chasing down low HP opponents.

Marks:
M.Pen is the standard on every AP mages. Even though he is a tank rather than a burst AP mage, we shouldn't neglect his damage output.

Seals:
Since the M.Regen wasn't so useful, I pick this to fill the spot. The armor will really help against AA harass during the laning phase, and during mid game since you probably won't have armor.

M.Regen / Level Seals:
You can get a chalice really early and with that you can easily manage your mana so I do not use M.Regen anymore.


Gylphs:
You are quite vulnerable early game, so I choose flat instead of per levels.

Offense:
IMO, he benefits more from the other trees rather than this one, so nothing to see here!

Defense:
I put 21 in defense mainly for Juggernaut, Legendary Armor, Defender, and Honor Gaurd.

Picked

  • Juggernaut: You'll end up with around 3,000 HP because you will be building , so you will receive about 120 bonus health.

  • Legendary Armor: This will help increase your MR and armor, especially when you have casted on you.

  • Defender: Since you want to be in the front line and ult as much opponents as you can, this will be very efficient.

  • Honor Gaurd: Nothing to say for this one.

Did not pick

  • Tenacious / Relentless: I did not put points in this because I will be building .

  • Safegaurd: If I ever want to dive a turret, it means we're at mid / late game. And at this stage, I should be tanky enough to tank turrets with my build.

Utility:
The 9 points in utility are mainly for Summoners's Insight, Mastermind. The other points are preference.

Picked

  • Summoner's Insight / Mastermind: You initiate with , so you want it to be up ASAP.

Did not pick

  • Runic Affinity: I don't pick this not because I am not taking the blue. It's because I will only take the second blue, and by the time the 3rd blue respawns, I will have at least which regens my mana really fast. Also sometimes, I like to give the blue to my jungler if he is mana hungry, and I farm wraiths a lot so I do not want him to be underleveled.

  • Expanded Mind: You will build , so your mana pool is not a problem.

Top:
Solo top Galio isn't very good in my opinion because his passive will be useless. He will also be very far from the Dragon and he won't be able to farm Wraiths.

I don't think he should be a support either because he's a very good farmer. It would be a waste. Because of the lack of farms, he wouldn't be able to get very tanky, thus, won't be able to initiate easily.

In conclusion, he's best played at mid, because he's against an AP champion, can farm Wraith, and he's near the objectives.

Match up

I won't do an in depth review of every possible match up, but I will talk about it in general.

Strength

In my opinion, Galio's strength is to able to reach a crazy amount of farm and dominate teamfights. So if he can farm against a certain champion, then he's good against him. So he would be an ideal pick against champions like

He's also a nice counter to champions with D.O.T spells, like , because his shield's effectiveness will be very high.

If possible, ask your teamates to pick champions that has a good synergy with Galio.
Pretty much anyone with AoE spells will do.
are good examples.

Weaknesses

Galio's biggest weakness is that he can get harassed easily. Champions such as can be annoying to play against.

His ultimate can be easy to counter with a simple CC. Champions like are a nice counter for it.

Early Game

During early game, you'll obviously try to farm as much as you can, of course. But as a melee mage, it isn't that easy. If you can farm while getting a bit to no damage at all, then you're good. If you're taking too much damage, stand back and simply use your Q to farm. Yes, it does costs a ton of mana, but if you take too much damage, you'll simply end up getting killed. Don't worry, Galio is an excellent farmer, you'll catch up later. If you are low, you can shield your Jungler while he's doing Wraiths or Wolf camps to heal yourself.

Shouldn't I put more points into W and try farming?
No, you want to blow up the minion waves ASAP, so keep spending points on Q and E.

You can start farming wraiths at Lv5 if you have Chalice or at Lv7, if you don't. To farm wraiths, do not do your combo, because you will not clear is instantly. Instead, do your twice while hitting the big wraiths. It will be more efficient that way.

*Note: Ask your jungler if you can take the Wraiths!

When taking the blue, wait for the Golem to be really low to throw your spells. If you screw up, you'll have to walk around the trees to finish it, which isn't a good thing, because you might miss some CS from your mid lane. Once you have , you can give the blue to your jungler if he's mana hungry.

During laning phase, it is ok to use your ultimate to kill the opponent.

Mid Game

At this point, you should be able to easily clear your waves. You can push your lane and look for opportunities to gank, but personally, I like staying mid and farm the wraiths and minions back and forth. If you have , then ganking becomes easier for you. If the opposing mid goes roaming, push the lane and try to follow him to prevent damage being done to your side lanes.

Late Game

You should have 250++ farm or so at late game. Stay in the front line and harass your ennemies. Use your ultimate on 2 ennemies or more. If you want to use it on a single target, make sure it's an important target, or that you won't need it afterwards, because its cooldown is quite long. Use your E for you and your allies when travelling around the map.

Pushing Towers

When pushing towers with your team, wait for the minion to tank it and go attack the tower. Don't be afraid of the opposing team, they're the one who will be afraid of you. If many of them try to push you back, into them. If you're just getting harassed, yourself.

Team Fights

In teamfights, initiate with + on at least 3 opponents or more, try to aim for their carries. Use to get in position if they can stop your ultimate easily, or ask someone else to initiate first. Afterwards, protect your ADC. Throw a on whoever is trying to take him down, and shield him. If he's fine, focus on priorities.


Tips & Tricks

Some of them might probably already be in the guide, but for those who go TL;DR, I want to highlight these tips & tricks.

  • Include minions in your ultimate if you can (mostly during laning phase) to maximize its damage output.
  • Cast on you before using to make its slow last longer.
  • Farm the wraiths with two s since a regular burst won't do anymore.
  • When pushing turrets, you can easily zone the opponents from the turret simply by walking to the turret. Do not be afraid, they are the one who are afraid of you.

You really need to work on this, alot, before its close to approval quality.



I've never had to say this before, but fix your introduction chapter, You don't explain what this guide is for at all, you just kinda forced the reader to figure it out.



Nearly all chapters are lacking in any detail, and contain very little information. you really need to work on that.



The line, "Go to: link If you actually need to see his stats and spells." is NOT acceptable. Either include that information as every other approved guide does, or do not submit for approval. On to of that, you give provide no educational value on his skills.

Hey really liked the guide! I'm only a 1500 elo player but have played tons of galio over 300 games ranked with a 60% wp, though I generally don't cap my chalice till very late game I really liked a lot of your advice. Though I've never really played players higher than 1700 I find galio to have incredible potential if your able to hit your difficult skill shots. Q + Eing a carry late game is difficult but for most ad's this combo will leave them at around or below half health. Anyways though, I very much liked the guide and though brief it was definitely effective!

Great guide but you should explain why getting those items. To those good with galio u could add ziggs. To who galio counters: swain because almost all of his dmg is dot. And u should add section for team fights like u shouldnt use bulwark on ur self in teamfights atleast not for most times.
