13/11/2012 - I changed my seals from Mana to Health because more and more ap mids are very aggressive and strong early game champions now, so therefore it is more important to focus on buffin Ryze's early game defensive stats more than his early game damage, so there you have it.
- Also, I took DFG out of my build, because after they took away the CDR and they nerfed the active too dam hard.
- Awaiting the season 3 changes, there might be new meta changes, and the new mastery tree as well.

15/11/2012 - I took FoN (Force of Nature) out, because Xephyrus (if i spelled it correctly), mentioned that FoN will be taken away. :( but whatever, dealing more damage is better, you're not a full tank anyways.

Ryze, the Rogue Mage

Ryze is one of my favorite AP Mids. He is very underestimated and underplayed. People think he is weak because they don't know how to utilize his mana scaling, and end up picking up other ap mids like cassiopeia, veigar, and karthus instead.

What makes Ryze so fun, is that he is a "Mana Champion" because he benefits from mana items more then ability power items. This allows for his builds to be more versatile. Ryze's early game is weak,but his domination from his Mid to Late game makes up for it.

Also, at 40% Cooldown Reduction, because of Arcane Mastery, Ryze's combo is only limited by the player's casting speed. This makes smartcasting all of Ryze's skills a good technique for veteran players. Train him, and train him hard. Work those fingers, and you will realize what a devastator he is.

Masteries and Runes

Masteries:
Standard Utility AP caster 9-0-21 Masteries
The only thing different than most people is that I take the Butcher in the Offensive tree so I can last hit easier.

Runes:
  • Marks: Magic pen-Typical AP Caster Reds
  • Seals: Flat Armor to counter Bruiser Yellows
  • Glyphs: Flat MR-Basic Counter AP Blues
  • Quints: Movement speed-Makes you faster than most AP casters, more mobile.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

Instant Teleportation. This summoner spell is so good for both offensive and defensive uses. You can initiate with this spell, flashing in to snare and to begin spamming your combo, or flash away from the enemy jungler when they come to gank.

Ignite is a strong summoner spell from early to late. It helps secure kills when you can no longer chase or it is unwise, and the true damage helps a lot, as well as the healing reduction. This spell shines mostly in early to mid game though, not as useful late game, but still good.

Other Good Summoner Spells

Never bad to be able to run faster, but to be honest, I think Flash/Ignite/Teleport are all better.

Alex Ich or Athenes? Wanna be? Haha, just joking. Teleport is actually really good. If you don't expect to kill your enemy laner, just take tp to make plays.

Skills

Passive: Arcane Mastery
When Ryze casts a spell, all other spells have their cooldown reduced by 1 second.

Explanation:
This is very important to Ryze because this allow him to burst and do his combo. This is also why you need to do your combo correctly and not just spam whatever u want.


Q: Overload
Passive: Ryze gains 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10% cooldown reduction.

Active: Ryze blasts enemy unit for 40/65/90/115/140 (+20% of ability power) plus 8% of his max mana in magic damage.

Cooldown 3.5 seconds

Cost 70 mana

Range 675


Explanation:
Your strongest one-shot nuke. You use this to harass early game, and you will be using this skill between every skill in your combo

W: Rune Prison
Ryze traps an enemy unit, preventing them from moving for 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 and dealing 60 / 95 / 120 / 165 / 200 (+60% of ability power) plus 5% o f his max mana in magic damage.

Explanation:
Your only cc. Snares your opponent, which allows you to hit them with your combos. Note that the range of is less than that of , so u will be pretty close in range when you use your , hence making you prone to enemy harassment as well.

Ryze unleashes a bouncing orb of magical power which bounces to enemy units or himself, up to 5 times. Each bounce deals 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 / 130 (+35% of ability power) magic damage and reduces the target's Magic Resistance by 15.

Explanation:
MR Shredder. When you use this skill it will mainly be to get maximum damage output with your next ability, or simply because you need to use another ability to be able to spam your again.

Ryze becomes supercharged, passively grants 75 / 150 / 225 mana, also gaining 15/20/25% spell vamp and causing his spells to deal 50% AoE damage for 5 / 6 / 7 seconds.

Explanation:
It's basically a buff. The spell vamp helps, and your AoE damage is good in team fights, but I feel like it could be stronger. Now that they've also taken away the mana boost and changed it to movement speed boost which I feel is ok but it could be better.

Item Builds

GOOD ITEMS FOR RYZE:




Pros:
  • Movement Speed
  • Tenacity()
  • Magic Penetration()

Explanation:
The only two boots I feel are legit on Ryze. Merc Treads help you stop getting CC-ed so hard, as well as a bit of MR. Sorcerer's Shoes are the usual boots I go with though. It allows you to dish out A LOT more damage and if the enemy has a lot of mr, these shoes really come in handy.



Pros:

  • Mana into AP
  • Mana Shield

Explanation:
I get this because of . If not, I probably wouldn't get it. Although Ryze scales better with mana, ap doesnt hurt;ur mana from ToG turns into AP which helps both ways. The shield can also give you some clutch saves.

  • Unique Active that translates into damage per spell

Explanation:
Loving this item on Ryze. It helps you nuke so hard, and although it drains a lot of mana, it's still really strong.

  • Builds from Catalyst The Protector()
  • Health and Mana

Explanation:
Good Defensive item on Ryze. Builds from your Catalyst The Protector() and counters the AP carry in mid. Overall this item provides great magic resist for Ryze, and a spell shield blocking one spell every 45 seconds, along with a good amount of health and mana. This is a great choice on Ryze and makes him more tanky along with defensive stats

Explanation:
It builds from the Glacial Shroud() and can make you very durable when it comes to dueling an AD carry. The upgrade from Glacial Shroud to Frozen Heart isn't really that big of a deal, so you will be able to keep Glacial Shroud for awhile and continue on to build other things. Very solid item for Ryze


Pros:

  • Aura for Double AP Team Comp

Explanation:
Very good item for Ryze. gives you spell vamp. gives you MORE spell vamp. Very good if you have a double ap team comp, e.g. nautilus top+ryze mid.Helps your team and urself. The sustain is good.

  • AP

Explanation:
These two items are very similar. Abyssal gives a bit more, but seeing as I usually get Banshee's Veil, I go for Void Staff because the Magic Pen really helps, especially if you got Merc Treads for boots instead of Sorcerer's Shoes. Your choice.

Explanation: I would get this if I feel like the enemy gets away too easily, or the banshee's are not that effective for this match, and I would replace it.

Explanation: Only if their AD Carry is out of control.

Explanation: If you're a meat tank, then you're unkillable, along with your spellvamp.

Early Game

Ryze's Weakest Game- He is most vulnerable in early game. How you handle your early game decides your mid-late game. Be safe, last hit as much as you can, and harass with your Overload(). Ryze also has an ugly slow attack animation, and is terrible at last hitting at tower, but it's possible with the masteries I use, last hit melee minions but letting tower hit them twice then auto attack. For caster minions, 1 auto, tower shot, 1 auto.
Overall the most important thing you can do for Ryze's early game is play much more safer and smarter then other characters.

Mid Game

Mid game is one place where Ryze goes through a drastic change. He starts to become insanely strong. His damage drastically increases because if u did well early game, you should have a few solid items. To keep laning phase you generally have to keep pushing your lane and generally they will send people to stop you. Both phases benefit Ryze because he is nearly impossible to 1v1 mid game in lane.

Late Game

Late game is a place where Ryze will still shine, and maybe even be stronger then he was mid game. Ryze's combo will still be very devastating and if you followed my usual build you will find yourself not falling off as hard. Here you generally won't be using the harass combo as much, and you will need to capitalize on doing your full burst combo as much as possible. Generally what happens late game for Ryze is that he continues farming and tries to join in as many team fights as possible because that is where he shines. Late game is also a place where Baron Nashor because a prime target and game changer. You need to have complete complete control over this area because at any time the enemy could try and get it. Baron's Buff is a real game changer and is a buff not to be handed out freely.

Team Fights

In team fights you generally want to target the squishiest hero possible. Any because you are a tanky mage, Ryze makes it possible to get right in the center of team fights are focus the squishy carries down, this is what makes Ryze such a strong pick. Another thing you should know in team fights is if the squishiest person is too far back and you are unable to reach, target the next squishiest person, because its better for you to do damage, then try and chase someone in a team fight and do nothing. You will generally want to use your fully burst combo if someone else engages, and if you engage you want to transition from the third harass combo into your full burst combo in team fights. Generally if the enemy team turns to focus you, don't get angry because they are also hurting themselves. Ryze is a champion and can't be ignore or focus. If you focus the Ryze then the other carries will generally kill you team, if you don't focus the Ryze then generally he will burst the living hell out of your team. This is what makes Ryze who he is, and why he is so strong to have on a team.

Lane Matchups


Straight counter against ahri. He has better range harass with his Q and his snare can lock her down from ulting. He has very good sustain and if you get early MR she doesn't really do damage. Just avoid her charm and 'q' harass.


Tough to fight against, Ryze has a hard time against Anivia due to her kiting and burst-ability nature. Also, Egg OP.


Pretty even matchup. harass her pre-6 though, her nuke gets kind of deadly once she hits 6. Get MR as she's got a huge harass and burst potential. Flashing her ult is a pro skill and one you should hope to get good at.


Pushes so hard when he has blue. Avoid his skill shots. He has a limited burst potential once he misses one of his skill shots, so capitalize on his mistakes.


Directly counter to you. You spam, she spams. She spams harder. you lose. Try to push really hard so she has to last hit under tower. Be careful of her DoT.


Snare and spam. Avoid his skillshots, and it should be a free lane. You can be aggressive early game.


Shut him down early before he starts to fear+silence+drain you. snare him when he uses his ult, wait for it to be gone, and then go in again.


Easy lane. Just snare and spam.


You NEED to dodge his skills, keep moving even when ur using your combo so you don't get hit.


Since you should have your 3 movement speed quints, dodging his barrels should be pretty easy. as long as you dodge them, you should be fine


Play aggressive and deny cs, attempt to kill early, and put him behind far enough that he doesn't become super strong.


KILL HIM EARLY GAME. You must win the first 6 levels outright, denial of cs and kills if possible. He only becomes a terror if allowed to get strong enough to roam to other lanes.


Hard lane, especially because your snare doesnt stop her ulti. Just harass her early as well, but be careful of her burst.


Just farm. Don't expect to kill him unless he overextends and you have jungle help. Don't try to go after him because he'll punish you for it. Snare him in team fights though, when he's using lightning rush, so he's rooted.


Build your Banshee's fast and win her.


Hard lane only due to the fact he can just farm all day and force you to focus on farming equally as much. Play passive, wait for him to use his e, then go on him. Pre-6 you will dominate. You must deny him CS, and even though he's one of the weakest ap mids in terms of team play at 6 he becomes a very real threat to you in lane with his ult.


Tin Can Man Will Rape You. Try not to get harassed by him, wait for his shield to go down, then try to land a few overloads and harass him.


Dont step into the puddle of crap, and dodge her binding. Engage when she uses both her q and w


With your movement speed Quints, you should be able to dodge his q, and when he picks a card and walks up to u, just back off, and when its gone, harass him, and as the game progresses, you become stronger and stronger.


Another hard lane. You really need to try and harass him without allowing him to spam his combo on you. Killing him pre-6 would be very good, as well as denying him his much needed farm. just q him when he goes up to last hit


Avoid his 'q' harass, and try to 'wqeq' as much as possible. Even 'eq' is already good.

Final Comments

All in all, Ryze is such a solid pick for Mid, and is underplayed. Remember though, there are more fishes in the sea. Don't just stick to Ryze. Know what counters you, and choose a champion that can counter that champion. Experiment with other AP Mids as well. You win if you know your opponents' skillset and combos, etc. :) He is viable in low elos as well as high elos.
