I prefer this one because Q is safer (You don't have to just go for his face), it gets cdr as you level it up and does almost the same damage as E but just one target (You can't push as good as with maxed E)

Skills

Stone Skin
Combined with the new defensive tree it gets stupidly strong. It's gonna be the first thing they nerf if they ever decide to nerf Wukong. Very underestimated. (Expanded in the 'Skills' chapter)
Crushing Blow
Really good for winning lane and doing burst damage to carries. It synergizes with your combo so use it on the primary target of your damage. Remember it resets the autoattack so cast it right after making one.
Decoy
The plays. A bruiser with STEALTH? WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING RIOT? Broken as fuck, this shit makes Wukong so unique and so nice. You may lose lane most of the time but this freaking skill makes it worth suffering the lane phase. Its just the most fun skill on his combo. (Expanded in the 'Skills' chapter)
Nimbus Strike
A gap closer, Riot's definition of bruiser included a gap closer when Wukong was made so here it is. Does decent damage and has a low cooldown. Don't be afraid to use it on teamfights along with your ult, even if you die you'll pull off a good amount of damage before dying. (Expanded in the 'Skills' chapter)
Cyclone
At level 1 it doesn't deal that much damage but once you get to level 11 and can put another skill point... Oh boy this skill MELTS carries and tanks, it just doesn't care. (Expanded in the 'Skills' chapter)

Champion Matchups

Aatrox
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
He can bully you pretty easily if you mess up, however if you don't make a lot of missplays you'll outdamage him.

Watch out for his sustain since he's manaless and has an innate way of recovering life, he'll probably kick you out of lane for this very reason, ask your jungler to come and help you push the lane before going back.
Akali
Difficulty
Favors You
Not really that good before 6, go for her face and wreck her early game. Be careful for the ganks though. After level 6 she outdamages you IF AND ONLY IF she manages to dodge your ultimate somehow. If she is 70% HP you'll kill her with E + Q + ignite + R.
Chogath
Difficulty
Favors You
He's not that hard to beat in top but he can pretty easily outsustain you. Try to bully him in early game since you'll dodge his Q with your E and rush hydra to counterpush/damage him hard. Watch out for the post-6 ganks because he has the CC and the damage to kill you easily.
Darius
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
This fucking dude. You can't E him since he'll put 4 stacks in your ass and chase you with increased movespeed like he's a fucking monkey hater. You can't win pre-6 or post-6 go for straight or . Maybe and only MAYBE if he's stupid or has suboptimal runes/masteries you can kill him pre-6, always watch out.
Diana
Difficulty
Favors You
Not so popular but definitely a possibility, you pretty much outdamage her in all the stages of the game like Akali but in this case you have to watch out and dodge her Q harrass.
Elise
Difficulty
Favors You
Wukong kinda wrecks her early game with E+Q+AA combos if you manage to dodge her stun when you retreat you'll be fine. Watch out when you're going to ult her in spider form since she'll just rappel away from the damage and then proceed to rape you. Play with caution, her CC makes ganks so easy.
Fiora
Difficulty
Favors You
Not so hard to beat but not so easy either. They fixed the bug where you could stop her ult with your W but she's still able to dodge your R with her R if timed properly, watch out. You outdamage her almost all the time, just pay attention and check her damage all the time, she will probably get hydra and be stronger than you if you aren't careful.
Gangplank
Difficulty
Favors You
Not really a common pick today but he isn't a crazy pick against Wukong. He has the best level 1 so don't even think on dueling him early game. Wait for post-6 when you both have one small item. He evolves really well so you must ask for some ganks in top to punish his lack of escape mechanics. He's not a direct threat to you but I recommend you start Doran Shield and then proceed to rush randuin ASAP to assist your team and protect yourself.
Garen
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
You can't outdamage him. You can't outsustain him. You can't out-CC him (silence stronk). You can't beat him early or mid game. You can't touch the minion wave. Just play passive against destruction man and win with your team, do not attempt to harrass him recklessly because its gonna be an useless effort. Don't play like a pussy though or you'll lose harder.
Irelia
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Both of you can do a lot outside the lane and will focus on farming everything in order to get your core asap. Play with caution because she can pull of quite some damage at level 5-6-7 and remember to W away if she activates her true damage. Your damage is similar to hers but once you both buy armor she will definitely outdamage you.

Also she can pretty much shutdown your ultimate if you don't wait enought time, so pay attention to her in teamfights.
Jarvaniv
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
In paper it seems like both champions are similar, even it could seem that Wukong is stronger. In my experience its not the case, your E+Q combo does significant less damage than his E+Q combo, both of you shred armor but he will have that debuff available more often than you. Be careful with his level 6, he can (and will) do a lot of damage with his full combo. However, if you manage to bait him into a bad fight or a gank then your ultimate will melt him as he has no escape after he goes in.

Be careful in teamfights, he will try to make your ultimate useless with his own ultimate.
Jax
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
I'd say he has more damage than you but he's not much of a threat to you if you want to just farm the lane and harrass him from time to time. You both want to become anticarry beasts so don't let him get too much free farm. Don't fight when his E is up and ask for some early ganks to shut him down.
Jayce
Difficulty
Favors You
I think he's very easy to beat. Your combo does much much more damage than his own one in lane phase and he doesn't have much escapes. He can hammer you when you do your ultimate so watch out for that. Don't let him harrass you for free and ask for ganks so he's totally useless.
Kayle
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
She's pretty annoying since she has more range than you and will punish you hard if you think of E+Q'ing her. Her ult is the ultimate carry saver and that doesn't help you at all. Try keep up with her in farm and try to make an impact on the teamfights. Rush hexdrinker.
Kennen
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Same as Kayle but he's a bit easier, don't let him harrass you a lot and try to keep up with him in farm. You can E+Q him but watch out for gank baits. Your ultimate denies his ultimate in teamfight so use it wisely. Rush hexdrinker.
Khazix
Difficulty
Favors You
He's not so hard as long as you're near the creep wave, try to extend lane phase and get hydra to push him to tower fast every wave. Ask for ganks early to shut him down and he won't probably be able to come back.
Leesin
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
He's your natural counterpick, he's tanky, he can see you with your W, he outdamages you, he will probably max E and deal hybrid damage and his ultimate / shield often fucks your ultimate really hard. He will focus on peeling for his carry so that you never ever use your ultimate on the carry.
Lissandra
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
She's the perfect antimelee champ for toplane so for Wukong she's a hard matchup. You can E+Q her but she'll punish harder. You can ask for a gank but she'll run away with E. You can try to push but she will counterpush harder. You can try to use ulti on her but she'll ult herself and receive little to none damage. Farm up and focus on other important targets.
Malphite
Difficulty
Favors You
Meh, I don't like Malphite top, farm up and you'll be a better version of him. If he's building AP then you might aswell get a hexdrinker and win the lane. If he's going tanky go for early Last Whisper / Black Cleaver and screw that rock. He can peel for his carry but thats not really his role (initiator) so you'll probably be able to damage his team most of the time
Nasus
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
You both want a farmfest and he will definitely scale better than you but you have a trump card: Utility. Farm better than him, buy hydra and counterpush him and in teamfights focus on peeling for your carry with some armor penetration, Nasus will probably go down fast.

Don't try to make trades with him since he will outsustain you pretty fast and kick you out of the lane. Don't ask for ganks either if your jungle has no hard cc, he will just walk away and their jungle can make pressure on another lane for free
Olaf
Difficulty
Favors You
This guy right here can be annoying now, he will outdamage you if you don't pay attention and he will scale better than you overall. The catch is that he is not so tanky anymore so you can get damage aswell and kill him / trade him efficiently. Try not to get hit by axes and remember his E has a lot more of cooldown but is reduced every time he does an autoattack, it can be very frustrating for an Olaf if you can predict his E cooldown and not allow him to hit you with it, they normally chase you for a couple of seconds before realizing they're missing a lasthit and thats where you go in and engage in a trade with your own cooldows refreshed while he tries to recover the missed lasthit. Since he's skillshot reliant you can pretty much outplay him just with your W and punish hard.
Pantheon
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Anti AD melee in person. He will block your Q, stun you and show you what real pain is, every 4 skills/autoattacks he will block the 100% of your next autoattack damage which is HUGE.. You both use roughly the same ammount of mana so he'll beat you to your knees and keep you there all lane phase.

However in teamfights he becomes a useless piece of crap with no escape, peel for your carry if Pantheon is going in like crazy OR fuck his entire team if he doesn't even do that (its his job).
Poppy
Difficulty
Favors You
She has protection against burst damage and you have a lot of DPS in form of 'small pieces of damage' so she can go down pretty fast if you harrass her with E+Q+AA combo every now and then and finish off with ultimate. She has damage too and some CC so watch out for jungle pressence (if the jungler helps Poppy win the lane she can carry the entire game) and pay attention to his runes/masteries to see if he's going full defensive or agressive, play accordingly.
Renekton
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
He's not that rough to beat but in my experience all Renekton players are very experienced with the crocodile and will probably just outsustain you if he can't outdamage you. After your first back he'll have Giant Belt (+Armor) and he'll be impossible to trade/kill/harrass so just get hydra, push and wait for teamfights. If you both blow all your summoners and skill you won't probably kill eachother but he'll recover life much faster than you, so that is not a good idea if you're not sure you can finish the job.
Rengar
Difficulty
Favors You
He's basically one of the few real skill matchups. You both have enough damage to take down eachother and a few gap closers / stealth to help/avoid ganks. He's manaless so be careful with him as he might just outsustain you just because of that. After the lane phase you're totally superior to him so don't be afraid to force teamfights as long as your carry is protected from the insta burst that he provides.
Riven
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
She is really hard because various reasons: She can outsustain you, outdamage you, use her shield to soak up damage (your burst), stop you with her stun in teamfights and in general she is a pain in the ass because whoever plays her is a nerd 99% of the time so you're probably fucked from the begining
Rumble
Difficulty
Favors You
Not the worst toplaner you could find yourself against but after all the nerfs he's pretty much done with this game until they do some QoL changes to him. Get an early hexdrinker and remember he pretty much outdamages you unless you get some jungle assistance, so watch out!
Ryze
Difficulty
Favors You
He's shit. Even more after the nerfs. You might find some toplaner Ryze now and then. Ask your jungler for an early gank and he will not be back in the game until min 50.
Shen
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
He outsustains you, he's tanky by default, he has innate bonus armor and can get armor items without lacking damage aaaaaaand he doesn't use mana. Just stick to farming and buy Health items, otherwise he'll tank the shit out of you and force you out of the lane every single time.
Singed
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
Pretty much everything I said about shen applies here except for the 'mana' part. He can be killed in early game though, but he can also bait you to death by acting weak, so watch out and same solution as with Shen: Get tanky stuff and
Swain
Difficulty
Favors Enemy
IF he survives early he'll wreck the shit out of you, watch out and get some early magic resist. There is nothing much to be said here, always pick ignite and ask your jungler to have huge pressence.

Introduction

Hello, this is my very first serious guide.

I've decided to make a Wukong guide since a lot of people ask me how do I play him, what runes I get, what is the best item build, etc..

This is what I wrote in Season 2, however elo is not important, I'll explain everything and justify it, unlike most of the pro 'featured' guides.
I'm a 17XX (And going up) ELO player, Wukong is by far my best champion and the 2nd most used in ranked.
I've played exactly 50 ranked games with him so far (At 1600-1700 ELO) and I've a winrate of 71%, which I consider pretty high for so much played games.

I've also a couple of interesting videos which I will put in the chapters below and which I highly recommend watching to get the spirit of this champion.

What else to say? I often get Wukong banned on LAN Tournaments and ESL Online tournaments so I'm considered a very skilled Wukong player as it is a champ I feel 100% confortable playing with.

Please consider upvoting this guide, it really feels good man :3

Runes

There are three basic options for runes, I've put up there the normal ones:

Agressive Runes
x9 AD Flat Red
x9 Armor Flat Yellow
x8 Mres / 18 Blue
x1 AD Flat Blue (To get to 16 AD)
x3 AD Flat Quins
[http://i.imgur.com/JgRav.jpg]

Why are these runes good? Well, Armor and MagicRes/18 synergize so well with your passive in late game (+40 armor and +40 mers in a 5-man teamfight after level 16) making you hyper-tanky while dealing a lot of damage. Plus, AD flat is really nice for last hitting early game and harrassing, your Ult and Q have very high AD modifiers so it is very important to run these runes if you feel like going agressive early (For instance, leaving top for a Dragon fight)

Agressive-Teamfight Oriented Runes

x9 AD Flat Red
x9 Armor Flat Yellow
x9 Magic Resist Flat
x3 Movespeed Quins
[http://i.imgur.com/7GaYo.jpg]

Those runes are almost the same with the exception that this time I prefer to get Magic Resistance flat for early plays, and Movespeed quins, to roam mid, drake, bottom etc.. Also, movespeed quins make a difference when using your ult, increasing your damage very much in some situations.

Wukong's Range

Both of you can do a lot outside the lane and will focus on farming everything in order to get your core asap. Play with caution because she can pull of quite some damage at level 5-6-7 and remember to W away if she activates her true damage. Your damage is similar to hers but once you both buy armor she will definitely outdamage you.

Also she can pretty much shutdown your ultimate if you don't wait enought time, so pay attention to her in teamfights.

Summoner Spells

In paper it seems like both champions are similar, even it could seem that Wukong is stronger. In my experience its not the case, your E+Q combo does significant less damage than his E+Q combo, both of you shred armor but he will have that debuff available more often than you. Be careful with his level 6, he can (and will) do a lot of damage with his full combo. I'd say he has more damage than you but he's not much of a threat to you if you want to just farm the lane and harrass him from time to time. You both want to become anticarry beasts so don't let him get too much free farm. Don't fight when his E is up and ask for some early ganks to shut him down.

Item Builds

She's pretty annoying since she has more range than you and will punish you hard if you think of E+Q'ing her. Her ult is the ultimate carry saver and that doesn't help you at all. Try keep up with her in farm and try to make an impact on the teamfights. Rush hexdrinker.

Early Game (Lane)

Same as Kayle but he's a bit easier, don't let him harrass you a lot and try to keep up with him in farm. You can E+Q him but watch out for gank baits. Your ultimate denies his ultimate in teamfight so use it wisely. Rush hexdrinker.

Mid Game (TeamFights and Lanes)

He's not so hard as long as you're near the creep wave, try to extend lane phase and get hydra to push him to tower fast every wave. Ask for ganks early to shut him down and he won't probably be able to come back.

Late Game (TeamFights)

He's your natural counterpick, he's tanky, he can see you with your W, he outdamages you, he will probably max E and deal hybrid damage and his ultimate / shield often fucks your ultimate really hard. He will focus on peeling for his carry so that you never ever use your ultimate on the carry.

Final Comments

She's the perfect antimelee champ for toplane so for Wukong she's a hard matchup. You can E+Q her but she'll punish harder. You can ask for a gank but she'll run away with E. You can try to push but she will counterpush harder. You can try to use ulti on her but she'll ult herself and receive little to none damage. Farm up and focus on other important targets.

Hey i've noticed a problem with your singed matchup. You were in the middle of a sentence and sudddenly stopped. But great guide overall!

January 24, 2014 - 12:13 AM #9

Everything below your rune recommendations got messed up. It's all about match ups and not what the header says. Can you fix that?
