Pros

- Smalls camps are harder to do for nunu now.

Season 3 was both a buff and a nerf for Nunu, the new items are great on him but the jungle monsters are harder to kill and it's harder to counterjungle now since starting with boots is risky.
Before his buff, his Q was decent early and was something you had to lvl up once your W and E were at max rank. It felt like you wasted your lvls because it was basically useless mid and late game.
Now his Q is really good and deserve to be maxed second (see more in the skills and some maths section)

Why the doran's blade start on nunu ?

Nunu's greatest tool for jungling is his . But the big problem is that doesn't increase the damage of your !

So it will only increase the damage of your autoattacks and your . But cost a lot of mana so it's a very unreliable source of damage for farming since you need to keep your mana for ganks.

So the solution I have found is the doran blade start !

- The doran blade will give you hp that will compensate your lack of defensive masteries early game.
- The doran blade will give you ad which will enable you to empower your autoattacks almost as if you had a . And when you counterjungle or fight the enemy jungler it will makes you able to trade effectively with him since you will have both your autoattacks and skills to do damage thanks to the early attack speed of your .
- Doran blade passive will synergize very well with your "innate sustain of your Q" and the sustain of your spellvamp and lifesteal that you have from runes and masteries.

With the and the biscuit you will have enough sustain in your jungle for farming and ganking !

Masteries

These masteries will focus on utility since Nunu is naturally tanky (see the base stats section). It will help also enable nunu to roam more effectively with some gold/sec and some movement speed and cooldown reduction.

In the offense tree I take the cooldown reduction for doing more Q and E.

In the utility tree, I take spellvamp to go with the 6% that Nunu already has in runes.
I take the gold/10 mastery to compensate his lack of jungle speed.
I take the improved buff duration for more roaming with blue and red buff.
I take Mastermind for more smite and flash for agressive counterjungle.

(I don't think taking the 60s ward with the masteries would be useful)

Runes

This is currently the runes I use for nunu :

I will explain why I choose those :

- The attack speed runes are good nunu early game to work with the machete damage.

- The Spellvamp is because nunu will gain on sustain in his jungle with his Q and will be really tanky still with his Q and his ultimate. SPELLVAMP ALSO WORKS WITH SMITE. So his q + smite will give him so much health back ! The idea is to take a stats that will be useful to nunu all game (when for example ms quint would be useful only in certain type of situation, here spellvamp is useful in jungle and in teamfights).

I also like to max Q second for increasing this sustain/tankyness and make the most use of his skills throughout the game.



(Attack speed or movement speed quintescences work just fine too if you want to be faster in jungle.)

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

Those summoners are the most effective for nunu :

- Safe counterjungling

- To go over walls

- To steal Baron or dragon

- To catch an enemy

- You can flash in a bush then ulti right away so the enemies won't see the channel and when they will enter the bush it will be too late !

Nunu base stats

Health 437 (+108) : Medium base hp, one of the highest hp/lvl.

Lvl 18 Health 2273 : One of highest late game hp, so Nunu is tanky late game.

Attack damage 51,6 (+3.4) : One of the lowest base ad.

Health regen. 7,05(+0,8) : One of the highest late game health regen

Attack speed 0,625 (+2,25%) : One of the lowest base and late game attack speed stats. But your w helps with this issue !

Mana 213 (+42) : Considering your passive will give you a free spell every fifth attacks and you will rush a philo you shouldn't have a lot of mana issues.

Armor 16,5 (+3.5) : Medium base armor.

Lvl 18 Armor 76 : Medium late game armor.

Magic res. 30 (+1.25) : Nunu benefits from the magic resist/lvl something some bruisers still lack.

Mov. speed 350: Medium base movement speed, but your W and masteries will fix that !

Skills

Passive: Visionary
After 5 autoattacks, Nunu's next spell will have no mana cost.

Explanation:

Relatively weak passive even after his buff. But enable Nunu to jungle more effectively combined with his W.


Q: Consume

Explanation:
ACTIVE: Nunu commands his yeti to take a bite out of target enemy minion or neutral monster, dealing true damage to it and restoring Nunu's health. Nunu gains a bonus depending on what Willump consumed. Consume does not need to score the killing blow to trigger the bonuses and the individual bonuses stack.

TRUE DAMAGE: 600 / 700 / 800 / 900 / 1000
HEALTH RESTORED: 90 / 130 / 170 / 210 / 250 (+ 75% AP)
BUFF DURATION: 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 / 240

- ROUGH ROCK CANDY: Nunu increases his maximum health and size by 10%.
- ORNERY MONSTER TAILS: Nunu's attacks and spells deal 1% of his maximum health as bonus magic damage.
- SPOOKY MYSTERY MEAT: Killing a unit grants Nunu 15% bonus movement speed for 3 seconds.


Explanation:

This is your main skill for jungling. It allows you to have a good sustain in the jungle and enable you to be very tanky sometimes (Consume procs spell vamp). This skill combined with smite almost garanty you to take the buff/dragon/baron over the enemy jungler.

This skill works perfectly with spellvamp because it deals TRUE DAMAGE to minions.

Note : - Consume's heal is independent of its damage. If the damage is prevented or blocked by an absorption shield, Nunu will still be healed.
- Consume can be used on certain traps such as Heimer's Turret, Jack In The Box, Leblanc Mirror Image and Shaco Hallucinate.
- The bonus he gains by eating jungle camps works even if you don't kill the monster, you only need to consume it for gaining the bonus.





W: Blood Boil
ACTIVE: Invigorates an allied unit by heating their blood, increasing their attack speed and movement speed for 12 seconds. If cast on an ally, Nunu also gains the effect of Blood Boil.

ATTACK SPEED: 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45%
MOVEMENT SPEED: 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12%


Explanation:


Your main "support" ability. It's also a good ganking tool because you can cast it on you and an allies to have a better positionning. This skill has a good attack speed scaling but not a good movement speed one.
This allows you to roam effectively and move fast between camps and be there before the other junglers.

Note : Blood Boil can be used on any allied unit, including minions, pets, Heimer's Turret, Jack In The Box.


E: Ice Blast
ACTIVE: Nunu throws a ball of ice at an enemy unit, dealing magic damage and slowing their movement speed by a percentage and attack speed by 25% for 3 seconds.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 85 / 130 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+ 100% AP)
SLOW: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60%


Explanation:

This is your main damaging skill. It's very useful when you counterjungle and you catch the enemy jungler. It decrease movement speed AND attackspeed. So it can be hard for them to retaliate. Late game try to use this skill on enemy ad carry or on the bruisers that tries to kill your ad carry.

Notes : - Ice Blast procs spell vamp and Rylai's slow.




R: Absolute Zero
While channeling for 3 seconds, slows nearby enemy units' attack speed and movement speed. After channeling, enemies caught in the area are dealt 625 / 875 / 1125 (+250% of ability power) magic damage.
Nunu will slow all nearby enemies movement speed by 50% and attack speed by 25%.
Cooldown 150 / 120 / 90seconds
Cost 150mana
Range 550


Explanation:

This is your main way of controlling a teamfight. It's mainly use for the movement AND attackspeed slow. Since you will rarely get the full channel anyway.

Notes : - Absolute Zero procs spell vamp and Rylai's slow
- Absolute Zero's area of effect is only visible to enemies if they have vision of Nunu. If he is in the Fog of War or in brush while channeling, enemies will not see the spell animation but they can still be affected by it.
- MINIMUM INTERRUPTED MAGIC DAMAGE: 78.125 / 109.375 / 140.625 (+ 31.25% AP)
MAX INTERRUPTED MAGIC DAMAGE: 546.875 / 765.625 / 984.375 (+ 218.75% AP)

Skill Order

Most of the time I prefer maxing the skills in that order : > > > .

But there will be situations where you will focus more on ganking than counterjungling so you should max over .

But since you have 9% spellvamp with runes and masteries. Maxing second can be a really good way to be really tanky.
When you gank the lanes or fight in the jungle you can have a lot of possibilities to use your Q. Maxing it will also reduce the cooldown and enable you to do faster dragons and nashors like in this video :
.

I recommend to max over because it has better scaling early/mid game and offer you better tanking.

And the main idea is to use all nunu's skills to all stages of the game. Because if you max w before q, at the end of the game you will have to lvl q but you won't use it. So by taking it early I maximize the utility of all his skills throughout the game.

I consider as a late game tool for your ad carry.

SOME MATHS

ABOUT SPELLVAMP

Spell vamp is a magic stat who regenerate health based on damage done by champion abilities. It works of activated item effects, summoner spells, and abilities, regardless of the type of damage done. Spell vamp is calculated from the damage dealt to the enemy after reductions such as magic resistance, armor and reducing damage abilities.


The amount of health restored with Spell Vamp follows the following formula:

Health restored = total spell damage × spell vamp × vamp coefficient

where :
- Total spell damage is the the mitigated spell damage done to every target affected, and
- Vamp coefficient is 1 for single target spells and 1/3 for multi-target spells.



LVL 1 COMSUME + SMITE HEALTH RESTORED ON BLUE BUFF :

Lvl 1 Consume : 600 True Damage / Health Restored: 90 (+0.75 per ability power)

Lvl 1 smite : 490

With 9% spellvamp with runes and masteries at lvl 1 blue buff :

[600*1*0.09 + 90 (+0.75)] + [490*1*0.09] = 54 + 90.75 + 44.1 = 188.85 HP RESTORED (51.9% of this health is due to spellvamp)



COMSUME + SMITE HEALTH RESTORED AT OTHER LVLS


For the first 5 levels we can see that the combo Q + smite with 9% spellvamp will increase your heals up to 53% !

On the next levels we will assume you got the spirit of the spectral wraiths, so you will have 29% spellvamp, it will increase your heals up to 65% !

HEALTH RESTORED ON ULTIMATE WITH SPELLVAMP


LVL 2 FULL CHARGE ULTIMATE HEALTH RESTORED ON 3 PEOPLE:

Lvl 2 Ultimate : Magic Damage: 875 (+2.5 per ability power)

Let's suppose all three enemies have 35 magic resistance.

Incoming magic damage is multiplied by a factor based on the unit's magic resistance:
Damage multiplier = 100 / (100 + MR) if MR ≥ 0

So 875 x (100/(100+35)) = 648 damage taken

If three enemies take each one 648 damage from this ultimate :

3*648*0.09*(1/3) = 60 HP RESTORED

This might seems small but it saves lives, and if you do it in the middle of minions you will gain way more !

Since AOE spells doesn't make spellvamp as effective as single target spells, the amount of health gained his lower than with Consume but is still noticable.

Item Build

THE THOUGHTS BEHIND THE BUILD


Since the buff of the base movement speed, nunu can start with (which will synergize great with his sustain from the spellvamp and lifesteal in runes and masteries).


Your first back should be for the armor and increased damage on monsters. An extra is also good for more jungle control.
If you had a good early game I recommend to take for your ridiculous ratio on ulti.

Next you should focus on mobility : are really good choices on nunu but you should focus on or first. are a good option too on nunu if you want a big boost of jungle pressure,farm and ganks and if you are planning to go for a .

If your game is going well, try to rush , if you are doing normal or bad go on your way to .

Then you should choose between tanking and dealing damage. If you want to tank and support your team you should aim for or .
If you want to do damage you should rush for ensure your full charge ultimate or .

is a really great choice on nunu, especially with the 9% spellvamp and the fact that you max q second. It gives great stats and utility to nunu. Definitely core.


With this set of masteries(10% cd),spirit of the ancient golem(10% cd) and spirit visage(20% cd). You will have the 40% cd reduction for all yours skills, for maximizing the utility of nunu !


OTHER ITEMS


You usually take this item after your two gold per items, so if you die you won't fall behind. Nunu is a control junglers so this item will help him a lot.
Really good boots on nunu for more utility.
Perfectly viable early game item if you are looking for some damage and mana sustain.
Viable too for roaming and early game tanking.
It's kind of a selfish item in my opinion, I don't really care about dying, I prefer invest to tanky/support item before taking ga.
Extra ultimate damage and health, why not ?
Great item on Nunu combined with his e and ultimate, you will be godlike at controlling teamfights.
If you are unkillable and looking to do damage late game this is definitely an item to take.
Combined with your 9% spellvamp runes this items will make you soooo tanky with your ulti and Q,and your ap carries will sustain a lot in fights.

SYNERGY

TOP LANE

Nunu jungle synergize very well with autoattacker champions in top lane :


- : Nunu/Nasus is one of the best synergy, their combined slow is really powerfull and nunu's W on nasus enable him to get in melee range easier so he can dish out all of his damage.

- : They have a double slow and irelia with the W of nunu on her can do a crazy amount of damage with her W.

- : Jax with the W of nunu can proc more his ulti and his passive as well as use his Q easier for gap closing. His stun can make people stay in nunu's ulti while he channels.

- : With the W of nunu, darius can apply more stacks of his passive so his W will be more effective aswell. Darius pull can bring people in the middle of nunu's ulti aswell.

- : Jarvan's E and nunu's W give them both attack speed buffs, jarvan slow and nunu slow with E and ulti work well together. Moreover jarvan and nunu ultimate works very well together since enemies inside jarvan ulti won't be able to escape nunu's ulti.

MID LANE

- : Nunu galio is an extremely known combo, almost everything works with each other, galio's passive encourage him to buy abyssal which benefit to nunu's damage aswell.
Galio and nunu's slow are great together,nunu's W and galio's E give them really nice movement speed, nunu's Q and galio W enable them to heal during teamfights. And finally nunu and galio's ulti synergize perfectly with each other since nunu channel is almost equal as the duration of the taunt of galio and taunt them towards him.

- : anivia nunu's is great for their slow of movement AND attack speed. With nunu's W on anivia it will be easy for her to use her R then E for damaging the enemy. Anivia's wall can prevent enemies from escaping nunu's ulti aswell.

- : Morgana's W will decrease the magic resist of enemies, allowing nunu to do more damage with his E and R. Morgana's E will enable nunu to use his ulti without being interupted. The slow of nunu's E and morgana's R will prevent enemies from escaping the second part of morgana's ulti.

- : Orianna's slow/movement speed buff and nunu's W and E work well together, their ulti synergize very well too (and works like galio/nunu). Orianna can draw back enemies in nunu's ulti while protecting him during the channel.

- : Cassiopea/nunu is one of my favourite combos, if cassio hits one Q, with the movement speed she will gain from it + nunu's W + nunu's E slow will enable her to chase and do so much damage to his enemy. Theirs ulties works very well together too.

BOT LANE

- : In my opinion Varus is the best champion that can synergize with a nunu (JUNGLE not support). Nunu's W will unable varus to apply more procs of his W, their slow on E are great together, and their ultis are really good together in teamfights.

- : In my opinion Zyra is the best support to have botlane with nunu jungle, nunu can W her plants to do more damage. The roots of zyra and slow from nunu's are really strong together. And their utli are perfect together.

GOOD AGAINST

Nunu is good vs autoattackers cause of his E which reduce attack speed and low cc champions who can't cancel his ulti or escape from it.

- : Even if you can eat one of her spiders with your Q to gain health. Elise is really hard to gank for nunu since she can avoid your E with hers or she stun you while she is slowed and then use E to avoid your ulti.

- : He is so tanky and can clean your slow with his and silence your ulti if he wants, really hard to gank garen with nunu.

- : once olaf is 6, he is practically ungankable, even pre 6 he can slow you with his axe so yours won't be useful against him.

NUNU IS A SUPPORT JUNGLER, he is bad at initiating. But excels at protecting his ad and controlling the teamfight.

Try to use your ulti to help your team land their own aoe damage and try to help your focused teamates to kite enemies with your slow and bloodboil :

Jungle Matchups

In this section I want to explain if you can or can't counter jungle/fight the other junglers and what you should focus on (gank/jungle/control) and the route you should adopt.




Rammus does not have a very strong jungle speed and thus he cannot counter jungle you back. And his skillset doesn't work against you, you can kite him until his w is down then fight him easily.
Route : Wolves/Your blue(smite)/take his big wraith/ward his red/go back to your wolves/go gank him at red.

Difficulty: Easy




Ali jungle's main strength is in his ganks, your job is to control his ganks as much as possible. With your early game ward you should protect your lanes and take control of his buffs.
Route : Wolves/Your blue(don't smite)/his big wraith/his red/your wraiths/your red.

Difficulty: Medium



Olaf will farm way better than you, his ganks are equally strong to yours. Before his lvl6 you can try to fight and kite him. But once he is 6 you will have no control and no damage over him.
Route : Wolves/your blue/your wraiths/your red.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard



His early is really weak and his cc are not enough to grab you, you should contest his early jungle as much as possible.
Route : Wolves/your blue/ward his red/your wolves/go gank him at his red.

Difficulty: Medium-easy



Lee sin has the advantage to have a free transition and path. He can start blue or red which makes him difficult to find and counterjungle. You can't fight him 1vs1, but you can kite him very well after his cooldowns are down.
Route : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue/his wraiths.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard



There is nothing he can do against you 1vs1 unless you or someone is under 50% to trigger his e. But his damage aren't enough to kill you.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/his red.

Difficulty:Easy



Very easy to steal red against, because usually he tries to take wraiths and gets to blue a little after it spawns and does wolves right after which means you can kill the red easily and gank. His ganks are very strong early on with his knock up and snare, he doesn't even need red. He can grab you easy in the jungle and enable his mates to grab you, so you need to be carefull when counterjungling him.
His ulti counter yours that sucks !
Route : Wolves/your blue(smite)/wraiths/red.

Difficulty: Medium-easy



Mundo has free transition and insane jungle clears. You can't kill him and he can't kill you. Hard to counter jungle and his W counter your E a bit.
Route : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue/wraiths.

Difficulty: Hard



You will have a hard time counterjungling her but she can't do anything about it because she has no cc to stop you. She can try to counterjungle you but your slow can enable your allies to catch up and kill her.
Route : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue/wraiths.

Difficulty: Medium



Shaco is a great ganker but you can counter gank him really hard. You can consume his boxes and slow his attack speed. He won't kill you 1vs1 but he can still terror your lanes. Taking an early oracle against can help controlling lanes and chasing him once he gank.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/your red/wraiths.

Difficulty: Easy



First nocturne clear can be slow, so you can be agressive early game before he take red. He can shield your slow so you shouldn't try to fight him 1vs1. And with his q he can be as fast as you.
Route : Wolves/your blue(use smite)/Ward his red/your wolves/gank him at red.

Difficulty: Hard




Gankplank can cleanse your slow and chase you with his e, so you should be careful about fighting him. But his jungle is slow so you can contest his buffs easily.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/his big wraiths/ward his red/your wolves/gank him at red.

Difficulty: Medium-easy




Malphite clear is pretty fast so it's hard to counter him but he can't fight you anyway. His Q slow is kinda bad compared to yours so you should try to be agressive with him before he get 6.
Route : Wolves/your blue(smite)/wraiths/red.

Difficulty: Easy



He has a slow jungle and mainly relies on ganking which makes counterjungling him easy. But he got a good gap closer and don't mainly rely on autoattacks for damage. He got a decent slow/shield too. Can be complicated to counter him.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/his red/wolves/wraiths/your red.

Difficulty: Medium-hard



Riven can start anywhere she wants that's the main problem. She is hard to counterjungle and really mobile in her own jungle. She can burst you easy if you are not carefull but a well-timed E will enable you to kite her easy.
ROute : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue/wraiths.

Difficulty: Medium





Easy steal and counterjungle, you can camp his red after you take it or gank. You gotta beat him early on or else his lategame will be dangerously strong due to his cc and tankiness compared to yours.
Route : Wolves/your blue(use smite)/his big wraiths/ward his red/your wolves/gank him at red.

Difficulty: Medium-Easy



Slow jungle. He can't fight you but his cc can enable his allies to get to you fast. His tanky shield can negate most of your damage so you should be careful when you decide to invade.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/his big wraith/ward his red/your wolves/gank him at red.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard



Like gankplank shen is a single target damage dealer, so his jungle will be weaker. He can hardly kill you 1vs1 but a well placed taunt can hurt you pretty well. But his lvl6 pressure is way better than yours.
Route : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue/wraiths.

Difficulty: Medium




He is very weak early. His jungle speed is ok. But once he get 6 he can easily win a fight against you because of his mobility and his e.
Route : Wolves/your blue(use smite)/wraiths/your red.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard



Udyr is one of the fastest and safest clearer in the game so it's extremely hard to gank him. You should focus on counterganking him because udyr is so much melee dependant. Your slow will counter him all day long.
Route : Wolves/your blue(smite)/wraiths/your red.

Final Comments

Nunu is a really fun champ and has a lot of versatility in builds and playstyle. The nunu bot skin is the best and his awesome laugh win games.

The aim of this guide is to make ALL skills useful during the game and bring a different way to control the jungle.

In the start of the S3 he was considered one of the best jungler in the game, but a couple of nerfs and jungle changes made him weaker. He is still a strong pick to any sort of teams.

I can't understand why you'd ever go with maxing Consume before Blood Boil. Nunu's Q does absolutely nothing to champions and is only of use to the team during dragon & baron fights. Choosing to max this over a buff which not only affects you but can also increase your ADC's damage by 45% by level 13 and allows you to save at least one other champion who's left when you've just lost a teamfight (probably because you bloodboiled a minion - that "champion only" hotkey comes in handy on Nunu)

@ duganmaster : I'm kinda forced too since those items are so important ! And I need the early cdr as well for objectives and jungle ! So you are right it's bad to put cdr over the cap but I'm kinda forced too.



But in the case of you having a bad game you will probably want to prioritize the iron solari for you team instead of the spirit visage and then you won't have over the cap issues !:-P

why get locket if it puts you 10% cdr over the cap? you have 20% from spirit visage, and 10% from jungle item, and 10% from masteries.

@ msigma : My guide is a general guide vs all types of elos and junglers when trick2g's technics just works at platinum elo. He has interesting moves but spellvamp on Q + smite is just too much op to get any other runes on nunu.

Hi,

Excellent, well thought out guide man.

I was wondering, what would be the pros and cons to selecting your build/runes/masteries, compared to say... Trick2g.

trick builds 4/1/25 in his masteries because the way he plays focuses on heavy counterjungling rather than ganking. In fact, the way he works his build is rather than creating a gold lead by ganking lanes he does so by taking global objectives completely ruining the other junglers time by completely DESTROYING their jungle. Usually he has lvl 3-4 while they're lvl 1, while completely denying them ALL their buffs. He will gank if there's an opportunity, but he wont go out of his way for one.
