PROS AND CONS


Pros

- Strong counterjungler.
- High mobility.
- Tanky.
- Excelent buffs/dragon and Nashor control.
- Best transition (no mana user).
- High aoe damage.
- Aoe armor reduction.
- Can kill wards easily.
- She is a fucking dragon son !

Cons

- Lack cc.
- Counterjungling is hard in the currrent meta.

Shyvana is my third most played jungler and my favourite, her free mobility without mana cost(unlike udyr or skarner) is what seduced me about her. Someone with good game reading can control his map really well and make something happen fast with her. Her burst and her various damage (magical and physical) makes her a big threat throughout the game.

Masteries

I think shyvana must have 7/23/0 defensive masteries, she has already insane natural damage so she don't need points magic or armor penetration in the offense tree.
If you would had took 9/21 masteries you would gain only 12 ad at lvl18 when ad is cheaper since s3, long sword cost 400 gold for 10 ad !

The 8% armor penetration isn't a must have on shyvana since most of her damage are magical anyway.

Moreover the % hp,armor and mr will synergize pretty well with her bonus mr and armor with the passive of her ulti and will scale very well with her build.

CONCLUSION :

- Usefull entire game
- Scale with all defensive items and passive of her ulti
- ad is easier to buy than defensive stats
- more defense will enable you to do more damage when more damage won't make you more tanky (instead of lifesteal)


Runes

The thoughts behind those runes

If we want to compare this rune page to a standard rune page that would be something like this : +15 ad +24 magic resist, +13 armor.
Taking 15 ad on shyvana would empower only with her Q and W.


On the other page, magic penetration would benefit to her E, her ulti, her W, AND HER Q (because her Q will apply the magic damage of the E, see more details in the skills section).
So magic penetration empower all shyvana's abilities.

Since you will max E second, the magic damage of E + Q will be more effective with your runes, which isn't possible with ad.
With that magic penetration you will still have 8 ad which will work with your Q and W, and armor penetration will help you jungle and empower your Q.

Moreover with your exhaust reducing armor and magic resist by 10 you will destroy the enemy jungler if you decide to engage him.

The new armor and magic penetration from the s3 justify the use of those runes even more !

I don't like attack speed runes on shyvana since she has one of the best attack speed per level and late game attack speed for bruisers and her Q is like "innate attack speed", so it's not the best stats shyvana needs.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:


Due to her lack of cc, exhaust is a must have on shyvana. Will make your gank really brutal with your mobility and burst. And in teamfight it ensure that the enemy carry will have a lot of difficulty kitting and killing you.

It's also a great summoners to catch enemy junglers out of position while you invade.

Once shyvana is 6 her ulti is equivalent to a flash in case she would be out of position.

Exhaust decrease armor and magic resist of the target by 10.

Shyvana base stats

Health 435 (+95) : Medium base hp, one of the highest hp/lvl.

Lvl 18 Health 2050 : One of the highest late game hp.

Attack damage 54,5 (+3.4) : Medium base ad, one of the best late game ad.

Health regen. 7,2(+0,8) : One of the highest late game health regen.

Attack speed 0,658 (+3,4%) : One of the highest as/lvl and late game attack speed, so shyvana isn't really big dependant of wit's end like many people would think.

Armor 17,6 (+3.4) : Medium base armor.

Lvl 18 Armor 75,4 : One of the lowest medium late game armor. But her ulti fix this issue.

Magic res. 30 (+1.25) : Shyvana benefits from the magic resist/lvl something some bruisers still lack. Combined with her ulti and the mr/lvl runes shyvana is tanky vs ap .

Mov. speed 325: One of the highest base movement speed combined with her w she can catch anyone !


In more details if we look at the 30 most popular junglers/bruisers and all their general stats :

If we add each lines of all those stats and we divide them by 30 (number of champions counted) we obtain the average value of the general stat for bruisers. Then we can compare it with Shyvana's stats :

Skills

Passive: Fury of the Dragonborn
Shyvana gains 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 armor and magic resist. These bonuses are doubled in Dragon Form.

Explanation:

Really good passive that makes shyvana scaling in tankyness during most of the game. It will also help her with her sustain issues in the jungle early game.

Q: Twin Bite
COOLDOWN: 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6

ACTIVE: Shyvana's next autoattack will strike twice in one swift movement. The second attack will deal physical damage equal to a percentage of her total attack damage. Both attacks will trigger on-hit effects. Shyvana's auto attacks against non-structures reduce the cooldown of Twin Bite by 0.5 seconds.

DRAGON FORM: Twin Bite will damage all units in front of Shyvana when she uses her next autottack instead of just her target. Each unit hit will trigger on-hit effects and grant fury twice.

SECOND STRIKE PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100% AD


Explanation:

This skill is the reason why madred is a must have on shyvana. Because it applies on hit effect so you can proc with madred.
And in dragon form, you can lifesteal on every target you will hit in front of you, making blade of the ruined king a really strong item on shyvana.
This skill will also apply the bonus magic damage from her E and wit's end.
Note : - This skill reset shyvana's attack timer upon activation
- If Twin Bite crits while in dragon form, every unit hit will be critically struck.



W: Burnout
ACTIVE: For 3 seconds, Shyvana damages enemies within 162.5 range and has increased movement speed. The bonus movement speed decreases by 15% of its original value per second. Shyvana's autoattacks extend the duration of Burnout by 1 second to a maximum of 4 extra seconds.

DRAGON FORM: Shyvana now scorches the earth where she walks, leaving a trail of fire for 5 seconds that will continually deal the same magic damage per second to enemies that pass over it.

MAGIC DAMAGE PER SECOND: 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 (+ 20% Bonus AD)
MAX MAGIC DAMAGE: 175 / 280 / 385 / 490 / 595 (+ 140% Bonus AD)
INITIAL MOVEMENT SPEED BONUS: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%


Explanation:

COOLDOWN : 12 seconds

Your main source of damage and mobility.
When active, landing autoattacks will increase Burnout's duration by 1 second, up to a maximum of 4 seconds, allowing it to last for a maximum of 7 seconds.
Burnout's duration is increased for each target hit by Twin Bite while in dragon form.
Using ulti while this is active will leave the trail all along your path.


E: Flame Breath
RANGE: 925
COOLDOWN: 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8

ACTIVE: Shyvana unleashes a fireball that damages all enemies in a line, dealing magic damage and marking them for 5 seconds. Shyvana's basic attacks against marked enemies deal bonus magic damage equal to 2% of their maximum health (max. 100 vs. monsters).

DRAGON FORM: Flame Breath engulfs all units in a cone in front of Shyvana.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 115 / 150 / 185 / 220 (+ 60% AP)


Explanation:

Really nice skills that got buffed a lot since it will do more aoe damage in the jungle and in teamfights. It will also help you control your buffs and dragon/nashors with the % hp damage it does.
It has a really good range and lvling it second will also decrease its cooldown.



R: Dragon's Descent
RANGE: 1000
COST: 100 fury
PASSIVE: Shyvana's basic attacks generate 2 fury, even in dragon form or against structures. While in human form, Shyvana passively generates fury every 1.5 seconds.

FURY GAINED PER 1.5 SECONDS: 1 / 2 / 3

ACTIVE: Shyvana transforms into a dragon and dashes to a target location. Enemies along her path take magic damage and are pushed toward her target location. While in dragon form, Shyvana's fury decays at a rate of 5 per second. Once the fury bar is empty she will return to her normal state.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 200 / 300 / 400 (+ 70% AP)


Explanation:

This ulti is a great initiator tool because it's a gap closer combined with great damage and also makes you tankier.
Remenber that in dragonform you will double the resistance of the passive.
The more you will autoattack and do your Q while in dragon form the more it will prolong its duration.

It a great escape tool if you want to go over walls.

Try to use W before ulting to leave the trail for doing more damage.

PROS :

- More burst
- More ranged damage in teamfights
- More magic damage in teamfight (hard to tank for carries)


CONS :

- Can potentially lose some duration on W and ulti. (because you will do less Q to prolong their duration)
- Less lifesteal potential on Q because of the cooldown (so less tanky)



Magic damage are harder to tank than physical damage early and mid game.




SOME MATHS

Let's see which rune page between the rune page with 15 ad and the rune page with 8 ad,5 magic pen and 7 armor pen is the best for shyvana.



If we calculate the damage done with each skills at each lvls with the 15 ad rune page, we obtain this damage :

Now If we want to calculate the total damage shyvana would do to an enemy champion (for example ashe) we must calculate that damage based on her hp, magic resist and armor.

With a 15 ad rune page, the damage on Ashe would be :

IN CONCLUSION we see that the 15 ad rune page will do more damage to ashe early game, until the lvl 4 when the 8 ad rune page will do more damage since the magic damage from E and ulti don't depends from the ad shyvana has.

WHY ? THE THEORY !



You can see that your damage will be better and better when you will lvl up because you you will do more and more magic damage with lvling skills. The magic penetration will empower the damage of E and ulti which are left behind with the 15 ad rune page. The 15 ad won't scale with any of your 'lvl up skills" beside your W.

Since it's easier to stack armor than magic resist for enemies during the game you will do more damage to them .
This is then the perfect rune page for this particular order of skills.

The difference may not be that big but it still good to do more damage potential in case they escape with no hp.

Note : If you would lvl up Q second the rune page of 15 ad would be better.

Item Builds

Why shyvana early game got buffed in s3 ?

I'm really happy about the jungle items change and the change to base movement speed. In s2 I would always start with cloth 5 and it could make me miss some opportunities like ganks or counterjungle. Now every jungler start with hunter machete and you will have 5 pots which will solve shyvana problem of early sustain in the jungle .
So now you will be very fast with your W and your base movement speed as well as clearing the jungle safely with plenty of farm before backing.

THE THOUGHTS BEHIND THE BUILD

At your first back you MUST buy and with some and .

If you are ahead you can build a for good damage and add some cc to your kit.

If you are behind start building towards and to tank and support your team or straight build a .

Mobility is the next step, most of the time you will take because you don't want to be kitted in teamfight by ANY source of CC. (because in teamfights if you don't autoattack you will lose some duration on your W and your ULTI).

Then if you are behind you can continue supporting your team with or be a badass tank with another or use the one you have to finish either or and hope your carries will dps enough while you tank.

If you are ahead you can either finish or or .

Next item should be for some more aoe and tankyess or to add some cc to your team and ensure noone can escape you.

If you are really ahead you should take or or depending on what resist they have in the enemy team.
Atma is a good choice if you feel you won't be kitted and you can maintain your W and ULTI in teamfights.

Next if you are behind you should take ] if you have already build and .

If you don't build you should take to be more tanky and support your team.



CONCLUSION : I prioritize tank > support > damage > attack speed items on shyvana.



OTHER ITEMS

A WORD ABOUT : One of the best assets of shyvana is her incredible aoe damage, so I really think taking a sunfire on her is a must. It will boost even more that factor and make her a huge threat. Combined with a frozen mallet she will stick on carries while doing crazy amounts of damage. It's an expensive item, but it's worth it for shyvana. Now it works with as well, increasing your damage and the sunfire damages !


I like the new oracle, you can't lose it now beside after 5 minutes. So really important objectives like dragons and nashors it's really worth to buy it.
Perfectly viable item on shyvana that can help her doing a lot more burst damage and be more present in teamfight. If the enemy team don't have a lot of cc you should definitely consider this item.
Same as sorcerer's shoes, the ap still benefit to shyvana's ulti and E and the price of this item is not really high.
: If your team has enough cc and need a tank.
: It's viable but I don't like this item because it's really expensive on junglers.
: Can be a good item if their team is really tanky but your main goal is to usually kill squishies that won't have a lot of armor anyway.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT VIDEO OF THIS GUIDE


For ganking you should try to use your W at last moment to keep the duration once you are in range to exhaust the enemy and prolong the duration of W with your autoattacks and your Q, don't forget to E first then autoattack then Q for maximum damage.
Try to use exhaust before applying damage for decreasing their armor and magic resist for better damage.

SYNERGY

TOP LANE

Shyvana jungle synergize very well with cc or burst champions in top lane :


- : Kayle is so good with shvyana cause kayle passive reduce the armor and magic resist the enemy has. So shyvana can do awesome damage to the target. The slow from kayle Q is pretty significant a allows shyvana to close the gap easier. Kayle W is awesome on shyvana with her own W. And kayle ulti really allows shyvana to go deep and dive towers safely.

- : I really like to gank a jarvan top, he has two good cc before lvl6 and 3 after which can work really well with shvyana. Moreover they have both armor reduction skills that enable them to do really strong damage.

- : Jayce has a nice slow and movement speed buff which enable shvvana to get quickly to his target.

- : Darius has a slow, a pull, and tons of damage. Pressure his lane and he should snowball his enemy and you can go back everytime for a kill !


Other champions that shyvana jungle synergize with :


MID LANE

: In my opinion ryze is the best midlaner for shyvana. His cage and his E which reduce the magic resist of enemies makes shyvana damage really huge. Once ryze is lvl6 he gains movement speed and then can follow the speed of shyvana.

: Everybody knows the wombo combo of shyvana/orianna, in laning phase this synergy is still really strong since the ball can be put on shyvana so she can be tanky and slow people.

: Fiddlstick cc is really strong and his passive benefit really well to shyvana's damage. Their combined ulti can dish out tons of damage and synergize perfectly with each other in teamfights.

- : Morgana does really strong damage and empower the damage of shyvana since her W reduce the magic resist of the target. Her numerous cc really help shyvana for using his kite. Moreover morgana'E unable shyvana to be free of cc so she won't be kited in teamfight or 2v2.

: Karthus wall is super good for shyvana to catch and and damaging the enemy, they both have tons of aoe damage in teamfights. Shyvana with frozen mallet can make enemies stay in karthus defile and therefore get stomped by all the damage they can dish out.

: Zyra has tons of cc and damage and her ulti is perfect for keeping people in place while shyvana deals damage to the target

- : Lulu is by far the best support you can have for shyvana, her W on shyvana can make her so fast, her E makes her so tanky and her ulti is simply perfect for diving into the enemy team : she can tank and cc everybody.

- : Nami isn't well appreciated at the moment, but she is really good for shyvana, giving her extra movement speed and a good slow on autoattacks. Her is really good with shyvana's aswell.

- : Varus is by far the best ad you can dream with shyvana, he has 2 cc that enable shyvana to make use of all her kite !

I usually like to hit the "front line" first and then dive the ad or ap carry and exhaust him + randuim to ensure he won't kite or escape me, combined with your frozen mallet.

Try to make your aoe work with the other aoe of the team and ensure your carries are protected from the other junglers and bruisers before going on the enemies :

Curse usually like to use shyvana with orianna for her initiate and their aoe combo, but she can work with other aoe ulties like galio or amumu and zyra :

Matchups

In this section I want to explain if you can or can't counter jungle/fight the other junglers and what you should focus on (gank/jungle/control) and the route you can adopt.
(If I don't write 'start boots' it means you start cloth 5)




Rammus does not have a very strong jungle speed and thus he cannot counter jungle you back. And his skillset doesn't work against you, you can kite him until his w is down then fight him easily, your E will work very well on his W aswell.
Route : Your wraiths/your red(use smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty: Easy




Ali jungle's main strength is in his ganks, your job is to control his ganks as much as possible. With your early game ward you should protect your lanes and take control of his buffs. You can start boots against ali and counter his ganks. Your mobility and exhaust will enable you to catch him even if he kite you with his cc.
Route : Start boots, wraiths/your red(smite early)/his red or countergank/your blue.

Difficulty: Easy



Olaf is blue dependant so you can try to catch him at red and kill him because he will most likely have a ghost so you can try to burst him with your exhaust, but late game his true damage will be hard for you even in dragon form.
Route : Wraiths/your red/wolfs/wraiths/your blue/gank

Difficulty: Medium



Skarner's red is his weak point too, despite his shiled he is weak early against your burst. Past lvl 4-5 he can kite you and win vs you if you are not careful. His ulti counter yours if he does it right be carefull.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty: Medium-hard.



Lee sin has the advantage to have a free transition and path. He can start blue or red which makes him difficult to find and counterjungle. Your magic damage will oneshot him, he is very squsihy and can have trouble kitting you. He is better at ganking but you are better at farming and you beat him 1vs1 easy. Once he is 6 he can easily get rid of you in his jungle or protect his carries in teamfights with hsi ulti.
Route : Wraiths/ your Red(early smite)/wolfs/wraiths/his blue if he ganks lvl2 top.

Difficulty: Medium-Easy



There is nothing he can do against you 1vs1 unless you or someone is under 50% to trigger his e. But his damage aren't enough to kill you. His jungle speed is really slow and his cc before 6 non existent. Counterjungle him hard.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty:Easy




Very easy to steal red against, because usually he tries to take wraiths and gets to blue a little after it spawns and does wolves right after which means you can kill the red easily and gank. His ganks are very strong early on with his knock up and snare, he doesn't even need red. He can grab you easy in the jungle and enable his mates to grab you, so you need to be carefull when counterjungling him.
He can counter your ulti with his knocback.
Route : Wolves/your blue(keep smite)/his red.

Difficulty: Medium-easy



Mundo has free transition and insane jungle clears. If you meet him you have more burst but he has more sustained damage so be careful not to stick too long and be kited by his Q. He also has exhaust so you will lose that advantage.
Route : Wraiths/your red(keep smite)/your blue. (in case he want to start his red and want to contest your blue)

Difficulty: Hard




Shaco is a great ganker but you can counter gank him really hard. If you walk into a boxes trap you will lose the fight but in a direct 1vs1 even if he has exhaust you will have the upper hand. He is way too squishy to handle your burst. Taking an early oracle against can help controlling lanes and chasing him once he gank.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/wolves/wraiths/your blue.


Difficulty: Medium-Easy



First nocturne clear can be slow, so you can be agressive early game before he take red. He can shield your slow so you shouldn't try to fight him 1vs1. And with his q he can be as fast as you.

Difficulty: Hard




Gangplank is a single target damage dealer so his jungle is slow so you can contest his buffs easily.
In a 1vs1 situation he will have low cc and will have a hard time escaping you.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty: Easy




Malphite clear is pretty fast so it's hard to counter him but he can't fight you anyway. His Q slow is kinda so it will bad for him to kite you. And since you don't rely that much in attack speed his E will be worthless against you. He will never kill you but you can kill him easy with your magic damage.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/wolves/wraiths/your blue.

Difficulty: Easy



He has a slow jungle and mainly relies on ganking which makes counterjungling him easy. But he got a good gap closer and don't mainly rely on autoattacks for damage. He got a decent slow/shield too. Can be complicated to counter him, do not stick in his jungle too long. His ulti can counter you if you use your too early.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.


Difficulty: Medium-Easy



Riven can start anywhere she wants that's the main problem. She is hard to counterjungle and really mobile in her own jungle. She can kite you easy if you don't time your exhaust and W properly.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/wolves/wraiths/your blue.

Difficulty: Medium





Easy steal and counterjungle, you can camp his red after you take it or gank. You gotta beat him early on or else his lategame will be dangerously strong due to his cc the aoe that will follow from his team.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty: Medium-Easy



Slow jungler. He can't fight you but his cc can enable his allies to get to you fast. His tanky shield can negate most of your damage so you should be careful when you decide to invade.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/your blue/his red.

Difficulty: Medium-Easy



Like gankplank shen is a single target damage dealer, so his jungle will be weaker. He can't kill you 1vs1. But his lvl6 pressure is way better than yours. He will most likely start red so he will be hard to counterjungle.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/Wolves/wraiths/your blue.


Difficulty: Medium-Easy.




He is very weak early. His jungle speed is ok. But once he get 6 he can easily win a fight against you because of his mobility and his e.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/Wolves/wraiths/your blue.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard



His jungle clear is really similar to you. He got more cc than you and can kill you if you stick around too much. I don't recommend counterjungling but more counterganking. You have more burst than him but he has good sustained damage and is tankier than you early (before 6).
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/Wolves/wraiths/your blue.

Difficulty: Hard



Start boots.
Since you start red it will be hard for nunu to counterjungle you, and since he control his buff so well with his q it will be hard for you to counterjungle him too. His ganks are slightly stronger than you and his slow can enable him to kite you when your W is down. You won't die to him 1vs1 but if he has allies with him you need to be careful. Basically it will be an oracle fight between you too. Try to take his small camps as much as possible.
Route : Wraiths/your red(smite early)/Wolves/wraiths/your blue.

Difficulty: Easy

Final Comments

Shyvana is one of the fastest and best transitionner jungler in the game. Her free mobility and none mana dependance makes her one of the best control jungler.

She also have one of the best burst for a jungler with both physical and magical damage.

I recommend shyvana for all new junglers that sometimes lack some game reading and can't predict where the other jungler will gank next.

The current season 3 makes her feel weak but I still think she has her place among the best.

after the changes to aegis/bulwark and frozen mallet, is it ok to just rush frozen mallet instead of picking up dsword and kindlegem if you can help it? what should i do about sustain? every time i farm jungle i slowly get lower and lower so ganks are less safe

@ chainpullz : Y I tried it, it's a great item for her and works well with all her aoe kit. But she needs the early sustain that madred and wriggles can provide early game so she is kinda forced to go with madred early.

@ Grant Parker : Shyvana has one of the highest attack speed/lvl and THE best attack speed lvl 18 of junglers. And we can say that her Q that reset autoattack timer is "innate attack speed". So IMO shyvana don't need attack speed runes. The rest is explained in the runes section !
