Take a point in Double-Edged Sword
. Although you take 1% increased damage, you will not be entering team fights until you see the perfect opportunity for resets. In exchange, you get a 2% damage increase. This is huge, especially on a champion like Katarina where 1 reset can determine the outcome of an entire team fight.
Take 2 points in Fury
. It helps with last hitting a little bit and helps us get into the next tier of the offense tree. I wouldn't recommend taking the cooldown reduction masteries on Katarina because she already has extremely short cooldowns which are made obsolete when you achieve resets.

for a free 16 ability power at level 18.

is a very important mastery on Katarina. As an assassin, you prey upon the weak, so putting 3 points in this ensures a 5% damage increase to enemies under 50% health.
Put 3 points into Archmage
for an extra 5% ability power. This increase will be very subtle until mid/late game but it is extremely helpful.
I really like Dangerous Game
on Katarina because it basically summarizes your situation and role in team fights. When you spot a potential reset, you literally jump into the enemy team to acquire it. Katarina is naturally very squishy, so getting an extra 5% health on a kill will give you a better chance to get out of the fight alive. This mastery is much more useful in smaller skirmishes but it is still worth taking even for team fighting.

means you'll be taking 2 less damage from auto attacks which may not seem like a lot but it's pretty significant in pre-6 laning.

3 points in this for 36 extra health. Katarina has the lowest base health of any melee champion so this will definitely help a lot.
Put a point in Resistance
for 2 magic resistance if you're up against an AP mid. If you're against an AD mid, put a point in Hardiness
