Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hey guys, just wanted to bring you all another guide on my favourite champion in the league - Irelia, The Will of The Blades. I see Irelia as a very mobile attack speed bruiser who has a durable kit. What drew me to this champion was seeing Wickd play her and his precision, mobility and dominance in lane.

About me:
If you're wondering, here's a bit of background information about myself. I am a 15 y/o player and I've been a player of League of Legends since beta (jax dodge op) and am from Australia. I stopped playing League for a while, missed out on S1 and came back to it around the start of Season 2 along with my brother. I'm currently a Platinum player and looking to climb higher when AU servers come out. I main mid and top and this is my second guide.

Irelia has been a long time favourite champion of mine, while being sported by CLG's top laner Wickd. She has quickly had a spark in popularity and has been in many of my solo queue games, most of the time being played in a sub-optimal manner. So I wanted to write this guide to bring you the ins and outs of Irelia, and how I see she should be played in Season 3.

I'll continue to revise and improve upon this guide as season 3 continues

Pros and Cons of Irelia
Pros:

High mobility
Versatile kit
Hard to peel
High skill cap
Enjoyable gameplay
In-built sustain
Shines mid and late game

Cons:
Hard to master
Loses to early game orientated bruisers
Cannot chain CC if enemy laner is lower HP %
Can be countered by AS debuffs
Prone to early ganks
Relies on W for major damage
Main source of damage is auto attacks

Heres a commentated match of me playing Irelia @ a LAN Tournament between my team and Drop Bears

Masteries

Take these masteries against AP Laners. I will use these masteries as a default Irelia page due to natural armour bonus on your champion. This will give your MR to get through mid and late game. I think having the extra mana regeneration is invaluable because of how important mana is to Irelia's trading and it helps you heavily trade against the enemy and come out on top due to your sustain. Take this against laners such as:

Take these masteries against AD Laners with heavy autos. I like these because they give you extra armor and resistance to auto attacks. These work a charm against a double AD Jungle & Top and will help you survive the lane phase. Again I really like the mana regeneration and I think its worth losing out on 3% max HP & -3% Overall Damage so I can have mana in the lane phase. Take this against laners such as:

Runes

Marks:
Runes of Alacrity (Atk. Speed)
- Currently the most potent runes when used on Irelia due to it's scaling with her sustain and true-damage based on hit ability, hiten style(W) and items such as Wit's End. Definitely standard and are the best and most optimal marks because of her AS scaling.

Runes of Strength (Flat AD) - A possible option but attack speed has much better scaling in comparison. However, if you're looking for an early kill with your jungler, take these because they offer more burst at low levels, especially on your Q.

Seals:
Runes of Resilience (Armor)
- Standard for top lane and I would only really take these because they help a lot with trades and there's not much else for you to take to the lane of bruisers.

Glyphs:
Runes of Warding (Flat MR) - Useful in general however if you are against an AD Top & Jungle I would preferably take Scaling MR. These are great against MR Laners if they are strong in the beginning, but a laner like Vladimir who scales into late, a mix of the two, flat and scaling can help.

Runes of Shielding (Scaling MR) - Great for late game, I like taking these if I'm against an AD laner as it helps mitigate the damage of the oppositions middle laner and whatever AP damage they have later in the game during team fights.

Quintessences:
Runes of Vigor (HP/5)
- Great for staying in lane forever you can literally almost never get pushed out of lane with these coupled with your masteries and a doran's item. Also extremely effective at recovering from trades especially if you can zone them as you regen with your hiten style. I prefer these
Runes of Strength (Flat AD) - Fairly standard as they add a bit of damage onto your kit.
Runes of Flat Health - Insanely good early game and coupled with a red pot can allow you to just have 100-200 more health than your opponent, good for avoiding early deaths from ganks.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
The most standard and probably the best combo in general because of the extra kill potential it gives you in lane. Taking flash is pretty much always a given because of the utility and positional advantage it grants you.

Alternatives:

Very strong summoner particularly when you want to chase or escape for a long distance. I like using this in 1v2 ganks where I will kill the opposing laner as their jungler ganks with ghost popped and then escape using . Use this as an alternative to flash.

Great for returning to lane and also to always keep pressure on the map as when it's up you can either gank bottom lane or initiate/stop a dragon attempt preferably after you have shoved your lane to the enemy turret. I prefer not to take this in solo queue and more of a competitive summoner as it requires communication & coordination, so take it wisely. Use this as an alternative to ignite.

Skills

Passive: Ionian Fervor

Explanation:
Gives Irelia CC reduction based on the amount of enemy champions around her. One of the best passives in the game, and compliments her kit very well. Allows you to jump into the enemy team without getting locked down and is very useful in combination with defensive items because it will make you very hard to peel and take down.

Q: Bladesurge

Explanation:
Good for farming, pushing lane, trading effectively and also procs any on-hit effects like your hiten-style. This makes it a very nice skill for when you are getting zoned and can even be used to escape out of a bad situation by juking to an enemy champion or minion in combination with your stun. Can also be used as a quick amount of burst after you stun.

W: Hiten Style

Explanation:
Adds true damage to your attacks when activated and heals you on auto attack, the amount increasing when it is used. Awesome skill to say the least. Make sure you use this ability to get the most out of it particularly in early game trades. Generally you want to use this after stunning your opponent but it is situational depending on the matchup which you will gain experience in over time.

E: Equilibrium Strike

Explanation:
It's a single-target stun/slow which stuns when your enemy is higher hp % than you and slows when they are lower. Very useful for coming out top on trades, baiting tower dives, escaping and turning bad fights around. If you dive into the the enemy team for the adc you can often stun him as he will be higher % hp than you.

R: Transcendent Blades

Explanation:
Great ultimate which can be used to clear waves and heal yourself, add burst to your combo and sometimes poke the enemy. Extremely useful when its activated in corridors and you can hit their entire team, even more so when in combination with something like an Ezreal ultimate. Heals a large amount and has a good cooldown. I often use this when I'm getting ganked to survive as long as I can and sometimes escape.

Skill Order

Early level skill order:
The skill order for the first few levels: >> is used to optimise her early game.

Variation:
Early skill order is subject to change depending on how I feel about the lane and also other factors such as jungler pressures and the location of the minions along the lane. Against squishier ranged champions I often take first level to apply early pressure, but this is entirely situational and based on the matchup + the skill level of both players and the starting places of both junglers. Choosing your early level skill order is something you adapt to as you play more of Irelia and I think it is best for everyone to develop their own strategy for her.

Why do I use this order?
The general skill order after the first few levels is optimised to bring the most out of Irelia's kit. >>> is what I take 99% of the time because it brings out her strengths. I prefer leveling over due to the stun duration which is priceless. I'd much prefer having this skill maxed unless I am snowballing out of control and want to jump around like a crazy rabbit with a 6 second CD on my .

Item Builds

Starting Items - In-depth breakdown (In order of preference):

Red Pot Start:
Very strong start due to the sight ward which can give you a safe early laning phase if you're up against a scary jungler who has early gank potential e.g. Lee/J4. Just make sure you are placing your ward at the correct moment in time which you predict him to gank. This is a much more sustain oriented start as you can force trades with your lane opponent and potentially force them out of lane. Great if you want to be safe early on. The red pot is great for baiting dives and early kills in your minion wave.

R.Bead 6:
Extremely strong for out sustaining your lane opponent. If you use a pot and pop W you will quickly regenerate health as you attack minions. This is also very good for a passive play start or if you know you will get zoned as you can regenerate without attacking. Just be wary if you take this against a red pot starter try not to all in unless you're sure you can kill them as they will have more total HP.

Cloth 5:
This is very effective against top lane bruisers which have heavily AD based kits. These include champions such as Gangplank, Renekton, Lee Sin, Olaf, Darius, Xin Zhao and possibly Jayce. This start mitigates their early game damage and is very useful when their jungler is also AD as it will sustain you in lane and allow you to out trade them more easily. This is a good start against champions who have a stronger early game than you and can zone you in lane. This should even out the lane as you slowly catch up due to the scaling of Irelia's true damage.

Boots 3:
The reason this is an effective start is because of the mobility, however it has low activated sustain. This allows you to take more positional risks and move around your lane. Boots 3 isn't default and doesn't suit many matchups due to S3 changes to base MS. I don't take this at all anymore really, as starting items for top are mostly just sustain based so you can continuously trade.

Early Game

In the early stages of the lane phase, you want to primarily just focus on farming and avoiding jungle ganks. If your starting items included a ward, make sure you place this at the appropriate time. This indicates possibly a 2 minute ward against a red buff jungle starter if you are on bottom side and approx. 3 min ward for a blue side starter. This is entirely matchup and side dependent so this will come from experience and estimation. You want to make sure you aren't forcing fights but baiting fights into your creeps where you can stun them and force a favourable trade. If they do force a trade, stun them (preferably in your minion wave) activate your and auto, possibly using your in between an attack for more damage. You mainly just want to have a safe early game and farm because the ramp up on your is going to help you win lane later on.

Mid Game

As you approach the mid game you should be around level 9-11 and have possibly 1 to 2 core items. At this point you are becoming very strong and with BoTRK active and ignite you can easily drop an adc or apc with one combo. You can look to push and roam helping your mid with ganks or stay in your lane and overpower them as they can't effectively trade against 200 damage auto attacks and a stun with sustain. Item path strongly dictates how mid game plays out. If you went for a sunfire cape you should look to split push and take your turret ASAP or help another lane take theirs. If you went warmogs you can force a team fight with your health and absorb the damage. If you opted for full damage i.e BoTRK + Zephyr just try and catch one out. You can mainly just continue to farm and possibly just pressure an objective after pushing your lane as you are fairly strong now.

Late Game

During the late game you have to make sure you are careful with your positioning however if you see an opportunity present itself then jump on their squishy and try and burst him to take him out of the fight. If you don't have your Guardian Angel then you shouldn't be diving into their team as their focus is enough to burst you by this point. Look to again push objectives and have some aggressive wards or defensive wards based on how the game has gone so far. Overall just don't be too complacent however look for small openings which could grant you a baron or a tower.

Team Fights

In team fights your main job is to dive onto the enemy ADC/APC and try to take them out or just remove them from the team fight. You want to use your across the enemy team and try to hit as many as you can. If you get onto one of their squishies try and burst him with all of your kit and your actives. If they peel you and he gets away just switch targets and wait for your to come back up. If you are too far behind and don't think you can survive diving their ADC, you can alternatively peel for your carry if you think he is strong enough. However, it is mostly better to disable their ADC from dealing damage to key targets and try and zone their team from yours to have a favourable fight. For example, I might jump to their ADC and zone 2-3 of their members whilst my team fights 4v3 and wins allowing them to clean up as I draw focus and drop them low.

Match ups

Irelia can trade evenly in most matchups at top lane, however some matchup require a certain playstyle or prior knowledge which I will try to outline here. General tips in matchups are to always if they engage on you in your minion wave in the early game, you will almost always win the trade if you start off equal. Also try to activate your so you can get as many autos off as you can and save your until it is completely necessary to use it or if you can jump to a low minion for a reset.

The best matchups for Irelia are:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Start or or

- Play passive levels 1-4 so that you can get a few levels in

- You can easily out trade him around levels 5-9 by using on a low minion, him then using autos and a . Only to him if his knockback is down or you want to pressure the lane.

- Try and avoid his early autos by using the brush and timing when he attacks minions so you can save pots. You can skill an earlier W if you expect no ganks and want to regen health without burning pots.

- He has a weak early game so try and pressure him and get damage off when his Q is on cooldown.

- Irelia out damages him at all stages in the laning phase so it is a very easy won match up.

- Your sustain is very good against him as that is the main advantage he has in lane.

or

- Very similar matchup to Jayce, except she gets her melee (cougar) form at level 6.

- Annoying early game like Jayce and she has a heal but if you can jump on her or get an early gank it becomes extremely easy because of your damage.

- All she has is autos pre-6 so just pressure her when you can, she can't really trade with you effectively unless she is autoing from range.

or

- Irelia can straight up beat Kha'zix in lane because of her ability to build tank and still do damage, whereas he needs to get damage to be effective.

- Early ninja tabi + giants belt + x2 dorans is a very strong build path against him nullifying his damage and giving you the upper hand.

The hardest matchups for Irelia are:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Difficult matchup because of his burst and early game damage with Q spam and autos.

- Have to be very careful if he gets level 2 before you.

- Hard to trade effectively because of his true damage, sustain is probably your best option along with HP. Try to dodge his axes as best you can.

- His counter strike cancels most of your damage output and you have to be extremely careful with trades particularly after 6. Try and bait it if you can but otherwise try to avoid fighting.

- When his counter strike is down is the best time to fight him.

- Experience based match up and definitely skill dependent as it could go either way its just hard to play as Irelia if both players are inexperienced.

- His early game just overpowers you and it is very hard to trade with him effectively as her scaling is very average early game.

- Try and get a gank but he is just very good early bruiser, you might have to play passive based on your opponent.

- Hard match up overall because of Irelia's weak early game - just try and stay even and that will be enough.

- His early game damage beats yours and again you have to play the match up carefully because of the kill potential he has.

- Irelia's damage is steady from her and she has to be close to Darius which lets him gets stacks up on his passive.

- Hard and risky match up and you have to trade well and very carefully, don't blow your skills pointlessly if his ult and pull is up because you will be forced to flash.

- Another strong early game champion which just straight up out damages you and has an assassinate at level 6 which is hard to play against.

- Trading with him requires you to be in melee range which lets him land everything.

- His passive is annoying and you will need either a lot of attack speed or sustain and try to wait for ganks.
