Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hey this is Morange and I have begun to play XIN ZHAO. I wrote this guide because I felt that he is an underrated champion that not many people know how to play properly and there are no decent Xin guides anywhere. Especially for top lane.

Here are few reasons why I decided to pick him up.

1. He is an AA based Champion whose kit is really great with lots of sustain, CC and a gap closer which is pretty much necessary in all good Top lane Champion.
2. He can either attempt to dive the enemies carries or peel for your own
3. He has a decent laning phase with amazing team fight presence
4. He is able to engage and disengage easily in lane and force skirmishes on his terms

Pros and Cons for picking Xin:

Pros:
+ Decent sustain in lane with .
+ Lots of steroids in his kit which makes his damage hard to predict
+ Good engage with and disengage from last knock up.
+ Able to fight small skirmishes for some harass with or sustained damage for longer fights with .
+ Able to quickly kill High Priority targets while being very tanky with
+ Decent CC to kill or protect Carries with and and .
+ Does not need lots of Damage items to deal damage as does percentage and increases his AA damage significantly
+ He can roam and gank other lanes with and easily resulting in more kills and assists to your team.
+ If the jungler ganks his lane it is normally an easy kill as Xin has good damage and CC to contribute to the gank.

Cons:
- No blink so he is easily ganked if you are over extended pre 6.
- Low initial base damage.
- Attack animation is in my opinion hard to get used to so you may find it hard to last hit at 1st.
- Is able to be kited if skills are used incorrectly.
- Is not the best initiator but can do it.
- Needs to Q and AA to trade.

When should you pick Xin:
- You should pick Xin when your team has someone to initiate. This needs to be either the Jungler such as , or or supports such as or . Xin can come in and be a major disruption to the enemy taking focus away from your ADC.
- You want a strong early level (1-4) Champion who becomes a late game monster.
- When you have a sustain lane as Xin is able to sustain like crazy with passive.

For a look at the stats on how I build go to this link http://beta.lol.fanrealm.net/D9M30aSaMzgIWbmNbbj6/

Masteries

I run a 10/9/11 page as I want as much early game advantages as possible and I find this set up does that.

You can very easily run a standard 9/21/0 or 21/9/0 or 0/21/9 mastery page on as well.

my reasoning behind this mastery page is getting the % armor pen, early health, movement speed, mana regen and summoner spell CDR as this gives good early game advantages.

Runes

I run Armor Pen marks, Flat Armor seals, Scaling or Flat MR glyphs and Movement Speed Quints.

I run Armor pen marks because they help for damage as you mainly do physical damage with , and autos. While armor seals help you tank minion and champion damage as it will mostly be physical damage in top lane. I run flat MR glyphs against magical damage tops and scaling against physical damage tops. I use Movement speed Quints as I Xin has to stick to a champ to get his 3 Q's off and MS quints help a lot with this. They also help when roaming with your team.

You can replace the Armor Pen marks with AD or ATS marks. You can also change Quints to Flat AD, ATS or Health Regen if you want.

This rune page is my preference and what I feel to be the strongest on Xin.

Summoner Spells

and

Explanation:

I always take as top lane as it give you so much kill potential during laning phase.

+ + Auto attack + + 3 's + is loads of burst and most top laners will not be able to deal with this at lvl 6.

With more wards, harder jungle and camping a lane being less common now, flash is not as necessary so most games I take as XIN.

is useful to take if the enemy jungle has strong ganks pre 6 such as , or .

Skills

Passive: Challenge
Xin Zhao's basic attacks, including those enhanced by Three Talon Strike and Audacious Charge, will reduce the target's armor by 15% for 3 seconds

Explanation:

Very good passive that helps with your damage all game as most of your damage is physical. This will be getting even better in Season 3 as % penetration will be applied before Flat.

Q: Three Talon Strike
Xin Zhao prepares to unleash a fearsome combo, causing his next 3 standard attacks to deal his attack damage + 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 (+1.2 per attack damage)to enemy targets and reduce the cool downs of your other abilities by 1 second, with the final attack knocking his opponent into the air.

Cooldown 9/8/7/6/5 seconds

Cost 30 mana

Range 375

Explanation:

Xins bread and butter skill. This will be the skill you most use during the game and learning who to use this properly in team fights will greatly increase your presence in the game.

Most team fights as Xin your role is to dive the enemy adc or ap carry and blow them up. However if your ADC outputs more damage than theirs it may sometimes be more helpful to peel for your ADC to keep them safe while zoning there carries with your presence.

W: Battle Cry
Passive: Xin Zhao passively heals himself every third basic attack by 25 / 31 / 37 / 43 / 50 (+70% of ability power).

Active: Xin Zhao unleashes a battle cry, granting him 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 % attack speed for 5 seconds.

Cooldown 16/15/14/13/12 seconds

Cost 35 mana

Explanation:

This is Xins sustain and steroid ability which lets him out last most top laners. If you are struggling in lane and getting harassed often by champs such as and then you can consider putting more points into this skill as you increase the sustain it gives by 6 health every 3 hits for each point. However in my opinion your and are better skills to be putting points into.

E: Audacious Charge
Xin Zhao charges and challenges an enemy. The charge deals 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+0.6 per ability power) magic damage to all nearby enemies and slows them for 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% for 2 seconds.

Cooldown 13/12/11/10/9 seconds

Cost 90 mana

Range 600

Explanation:

This skill is Xins gap closer and engagement. This is what you use to initiate trades in lane and fights mid and late game. Fairly simple skill with 600 range and a 225 radius slow. This skill applies your passive so you want to use it to engage from a distance to get the %15 armor pen. This spell also does magic damage and most enemies do not get much MR when laning against Xin so you get most of the spell's damage against an enemy.

R: Crescent Sweep
Xin Zhao unleashes a sweep around him that dealing 125 / 225 / 325 (+ 1.0 per bonus attack damage) physical damage to all nearby enemies equal to a base amount plus 15% their current health and knocks them back. Xin Zhao gains 15 / 20 / 25 bonus armor and magic resistance for 6 seconds for each champion hit.

If a challenged target is hit by the sweep, it is unaffected by the knock back.

Cooldown 100/90/80 seconds

Cost 100 mana

Range 375

Explanation:

The use of this spell is what turns Xin from manageable to godlike. During laning phase in my opinion this skill is mainly used for the knock back to escape from ganks. I personal don't use it unless i'm going all in on a person to get a kill and I need to use it to secure a kill. This is because it is much more important to use during dragon fights, ganks and counter ganks. During Mid and late game save this for fights with 3 or more people as proper use of this skill can determine Team fights late game and if you wasted it killing 1 person you may lose a team fight and the game.

Skill Order

Xin is probably the Champion with the one of most flexible skill order. The other is probably Lee sin.

In most cases I skill and evenly as I want their CD to be about 4 to 5 seconds apart as your reduces the CD of all other abilities by 1 second for each hit and it takes 2-3 seconds to get all 3 's off in a trade. So skill order is > / >

If the enemy is forcing trades on you for some reason I would max as you will not need to engage on them. Skill order is > > >

If you are against someone with light constant harass such as or putting a few more points into can help negate their harass but will give you less kill potential in lane as you wont have as much damage. Only do this if you really need to as max rank is only double the sustain of 1 point in it. Skill order is > / /

If you are playing against a champion who either completely negates auto attacks such as or or against champions with attack speed slows so you can't get 3 's off such as then max 1st. Skill order is > > >

Item Builds

Starting Items

In Season 2 you always took + /. However in Season 3 with getting nerfed other starting items have become more viable especially with getting buffed early game.

Best Starting items for different situations.

If the enemy jungle has strong ganks pre 6 such as , or . I would recommend getting + /.

If you think you can get a kill early and snowball your lane you may want to get for early damage and the 5 health per hit which will increase your health regained per 3 hits to 41 at lvl 3 with 1 point in . This may become the most popular starting item for AD tops as this will give them an advantage early game with the increased AD and sustain.

With the jungle being more difficult early there will be less pressure from early ganks top lane so + against high physical damage tops such as or or against Auto attack harassers such as and will become more viable than previously with the nerf to .

Another way to start is + + I have recently tried starting this way on various top laners and have had lots success with it. Reason this works is that you are able to out sustain most other top laners.

Another way to start if you think you have the advantage early game is + as this build into a quick .

Laning Items

When playing against physical damage champs I like to build an early + for the damage mitigation they provide. Building it early is good as this increases your defense and offense. How does Building a defensive item improve your offense you ask, well gives you armor, mana and most importantly CDR. More CDR and mana allow you to use your skill more frequently meaning you output damage more frequently therefore increasing your damage. Next item I like to build is or . I build if I am wining my lane and want to rush for massive early game damage. Then for some MR and increased sustained damage

When playing against magic damage champ I build 1st to reduce their damage while increasing mine through Wits on hit magic damage. This items is great as it makes it harder for champs to itemize against xin as he now does 42 magic damage per hit before resists.

Mid Game Items

This is where you want to upgrade into and into . These 2 items will give you great dueling power and you should be able to 1 v 1 most champions with ease.

End Game

After completing your other items next you want some health to make use of all your Armor and MR. So we build as this gives you the most health in game and has an awesome passive in season 3 from . At this point you are outputting so much damage with , and , so much utility with AOE slows, Knock backs, ATS debuffs and Armor reduction due to your passive and . You will be able to tank lots of damage while outputting loads of your own. You should be an unstoppable killing machine ready to take down any who stand in your way to the nexus.

Early Game

Early game try to focus on CSing and taking advantage of any mistakes your enemy makes.

level 1 - 3 Look to whenever they get into range as does a lot of damage early.

level 4-6 you should now hopefully if you played the lane right have an advantage. from level 4 onward you want to increase this advantage in the form of towers, kill or massive cs difference.

If you hit 6 before the other laner in most cases you will want to all in them with + + Auto attack + + 3 's + .

this is loads of burst and most top laners will not be able to deal with this at lvl 6.

level 7 - 9 the lane should be decided by now. If you have won lane push your advantage and get OBJECTIVES!!!. This means Towers, dragons and buffs. After you get top tower go help mid push their tower or force a dragon fight that will be 4 v 5 due to their top laner being stuck top farming trying to catch up.

Laning Tips, Tricks and Combo's

Tips for laning phase

At the moment a trick I use to get ahead early if i'm blue side is to go and steal the enemy big wraith. This gives me enough exp to get roughly halfway to lvl 2 and once I hit lvl 2 I try to force an all in engage as they will be lvl 1 still. Doing this will make them either blow flash or put them to below 50% with little damage taken on your part. This is fairly risk free strategy.

Notes for doing this:
- Make sure you buy quick!!!
- Check every brush you go past to make sure no enemies see you
- make sure the enemy jungler does not start red or you will die

Doing this will get you:
- Early lvl advantage (crucial in top lane)
- Ability to force engagement as they will be a lvl down

Trading and Harassing Combos:

Main combo is + Auto + 3 x then enter brush or back out to avoid retaliation.

Note:
- Use just after you attack to reset your attack animation to get this combo off quicker.
- If you are are only looking for harass not to trade then try to stay at max attack range by moving towards your minions after each attack. This allows your opponent less chance to attack back as Xin attack range is 175 while most other top laners have 125.
- Dont activate your W as you dont want to keep trading after using your 3

A varriation of above combo is 2 x on minion then Enemy champion + then back out.

This gives the enemy champion no chance of retaliation as they will be knock up the whole time. This is best when you are both low and want to get damage on them without taking any.

All in Combo

+ + Auto + 3 x + + Auto until dead

Note:
- Use this when it will kill the enemy normally if they are 60% or lower.
- You can use this if you hit lvl 6 before they do even if it wont kill them as it will definitely send them to base giving you an advantage and your will most likely be up again for the next fight.
- This combo should be done in 4-5 seconds so the enemy does not have time to react.

When ever you go back to shop buy at least 1 ward and some health pots as this will save your life countless times!!!

"Buy a ward, Stop a gank, save a life"

Matchups

Hard matchups

Jax

Difficulty
7.5/10
Jax is probably the best counter pick to Xin and therefore the hardest matchup you will face in lane.

Playing the Match-up:

  • Try to bait out his Counter Strike before you use as this will dodge all the extra damage.
  • Do this by using then backing out once he uses his E as your is on a much lower CD while his is on CD for 18 secs at rank 1.
  • Jax is a his weakest Lvl 2 - 3 so IF his E is on CD and he loses his Passive stacks try to engage and force a trade as you will out damage him.
  • Be careful when he hits 6 as he gets a massive spike in power and he look to force an engage.
  • Get a 1st as the armor and CDR help when fighting and he mainly uses AA's when trading so helps a lot.

Skill order: > > >

Mid Game

This is when everyone starts to group and take towers or other objectives. Getting caught out and dying here will give the other team the opportunity to gain advantages and objects.

Mid game is all about towers, roaming with your team to try to catch someone in their team and Team fights as Baron is very hard to get unless you are very far ahead and ace their whole team without losing more than 1 team mate.

Knowing your role in team fights is key to success in Mid game where most Solo Que games are decided. I go more in depth about your role in team fights as XIN further on in the guide as it needs a whole chapter to itself in my opinion.

Late Game

If the game has gone past 30 minutes and most people have 4 or more major items it is late game.

  • Key objectives in late game are Baron and Inhibitors. Wards are so important at this time as catching someone out of position can lead to a free baron and the game.

  • Team fights are also very important and key to taking inhibs and barons. Unless for some reason several members of their team go bot, Baron control will be decided by a team fight and having adequate ward coverage will help you to decide the best time to engage and catch a key member of their team. So always have wards for baron even if you are not support.

  • You want to force a team fight at Baron if you can not push any towers without it and you have an advantage over their team.

Team Fights

In my opinion Xin if built right is a beast in late game Team fights. He outputs Crazy amounts of damage while being more tanky than most tanks with as you gain up to 125 armor and MR for 6 seconds and deal 15% of their maximum health plus 325 AOE damage.

Xin has 2 roles in late game team fights dive their carries while protecting yours. While some bruisers may only be able to do 1 of these each team fight, Xin has the ability to engage on their ADC with and then dash to their brusier 2.5 seconds later. AOE slow and knock him up bruiser to peel for your ADC then dash back and kill whoever else he wants.

How does he do this you ask. Well with + he has40% CDR. That means his has a CD of 9s * 0.6 = 5.4s then - 3s for 3 x = 2.4 CD.

Also in late game team fights he will always have active as its CD is 12 * 0.6 - 3 = 4.2 and it lasts 5 seconds.

But that is only late game.

In mid game team fights over buffs, dragons and towers, you should only try to do 1 role. This role depends on many things such as how strong your ADC is relative to theirs, how strong your are compared to their bruisers and tanks, is their ADC out of position and can you burst him down, is diving him going to put you out of reach of your team. These are all things you need to think about before you engage. There is also no set rules saying if this, this and this happen you should dive but if that, that and that happen you should peel. You can only go by gut feel and intuition and this comes from experience from playing.

Main points in team fights
- Try to hit as many as possible with
- Look for out of position carries
- Dont over extend
- Dont chase someone who is low life if it will take you more than 3-5 seconds to kill. Them as long as they are out of the fight and not outputting damage or CC that is enough.

Ok so less images with more info thank you for your comment

January 5, 2013 - 01:55 AM #2

You cleaned up sense last i saw this, however, there are still plenty of issues to deal with.

First off, the mass amount of tool images. you need to remove like 90% of them. Tool images are the images of items, skills, champs, etc that we provide. While we want you to use them, we expect you to use them sparingly. Write in the champions name where need be, same with items and skills(you could also use Q/W/E/R as well). the issue is that tool images cause line breaks, which can distract the eye, and thus creates an eye sore, forcing readers to leave your guide.

Spend more time writing the information in your chapters. some areas it's ok, but in others its just extremely vague, and non educational. for example, you have barely anything on his skills information wise. another example is with your summoner spells chapters, the line "flash is not as necessary so most games I take [image] as XIN." is not helpful at all(it tells the reader nothing as to why the spell is useful).

January 4, 2013 - 01:42 PM #3

I removed iceborn gauntlet as with my current build i already have MAX CDR. The CDR was the main reason i got iceborn gauntlet. With BC being so good on him their is no reason IMO to get iceborn gauntlet. Xin is IMO a brusier not full tank so he needs some damage and replacing BC with iceborn gauntlet would reduce your damage output too much IMO. Only get iceborn gauntlet if you are the mian tanky person on your team and No one else is initiating for your team.

December 29, 2012 - 09:36 PM #4

why did you remove iceborn gauntlet?

December 7, 2012 - 12:59 PM #5

ok so i have been away for i a bit and just saw your comment you obviously dont like my guide but other than saying i dont have and early, mid and late game section you havent really said what is a mess about it could you please explain further so i can improve it

November 26, 2012 - 07:59 PM #6

Missing all game phase chapters, guide is an overall mess, the mulan video doesn't belong, guide is NOT in depth at all.
