Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hi, my Name is KnightmareZz and I play on EU-W. I'm NOT a high ELO Player, but I like playing GP and I hope I can help you a bit in mastering him.

I found out, that Gangplank is a quite underestimated laner. He isn't picked often, but to be honest, I don't understand this.

Pros:
- Ranged harras/farming Tool, that gives bonus Gold and some Mana on lasthitting.
- Permanent slow through his passive.
- Can remove CC.
- AOE Speed/AD Buff.
- Global Ultimate.
- Very tanky while dealing a good amount of damage.

Cons:
- Can be harassed out of lane, if you don't play it safe.
- No escape skill.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:
allows you to split push and help out other lanes.

is best for escape. Enough said!

Other possibilities:
(instead of ) Is also a good choice, but I like Ignite more.
(instead of ) Also a good spell, as it helps you to kill your opponent.
(instead of ) You can get this, but it doesn't allow you to get over walls etc.

Other Spells aren't that good on Gangplank in my opinion.

Item Builds

Starting Items:

- + (Replace some with if needed)
-> Optimal sustain + security in lane.

- + (Replace some with if needed)
-> Against heavy AD burst Champs (like )

- +/ (Replace some with if needed)
-> If you need the mobility (for example vs )

- ++ (Replace some with if needed)
-> can win you early battles and give you an advantage in lane. (I do not recommend this start, because you should not be focused on killing your opponent)


Grab early:

- + -> For tons of gold.

- -> To avoid the squishyness + more sustain trough more HP.


Boots:

- -> VS AD

- -> VS AP/much CC

Enchantments:

- -> More MS is always good to have.

- -> Good for Defending Base and getting faster to fights etc.

(Take this if using -> Lesser TP and Flash CD; good for Split-Pushing.


Core Item:

-> Great on , because of more Armor, more Mana, more DMG on and ranged AOE slow.


VS heavy AD:

- -> Armor, Enemy AS/MS slow when auto-attacking you + more AS/MS slow trough the Active.

- -> Armor, AOE Enemie AS slow. (If you already have someone in your team having , you should not get it, since the Passive is unique.)


VS heavy AP:

- -> MR + a magic DMG blocking shield.

- -> MR + Spellshield.


Health Items:

- -> Massive HP and good HP Regeneration. I would buy this every game.

- -> Much HP + Armor + AOE Magic Damage. Good for split-pushing.


Damage Items:

- -> After it's buff it is very strong on ADC's and Bruiser. (Can get it)

- -> Used to be very strong, but it got nerfed. You need to get several hits on you opponent to get the maximum efficency. (Don't recommend)

- -> Gives you a good amount of damage and lifesteal. You can get that if you are far ahead. (Can get it)

- -> The armor penetration + AD helps you to damage all kinds of targets. (Prefered)

Skills

Passive: Grog Soaked Blade
Gangplank's attacks apply a poison that deals 4-21 damage each second and reduces movement speed by 7% (slow stacks up to 3 times). Lasts 3 seconds.

Explanation:

It's not the worst passive but not the best. The slow helps you to chase enemies and the DOT is not that big of a deal like for example Darius'.


Q: Parrrley
Gangplank shoots a target unit for 20/45/70/95/120 plus 100% of his attack damage as physical damage. Gangplank gains 4/5/6/7/8 extra gold if Parrrley deals a killing blow. This ability can crit, applies Grog-Soaked Blade and applies on hit effects.

Cooldown 5 seconds

Cost 40/45/50/55/60 mana

Range 625


Explanation:

This is actually Gangplanks best Spell, as it is a ranged harass tool + a farming tool. Since the latest buff, you get half of the mana-cost back, if you lasthit with Parrrley.



W: Remove Scurvy
Consumes a large quantity of citrus fruit which clears any crowd control effects on him and heals him for 80/150/220/290/360 (+100% of ability power) health.

Cooldown 22/21/20/19/18 seconds

Cost 65 mana


Explanation:

This skill is like a free QSS. Removes all CC + heals you. Gives you good sustain.



E: Raise Morale
Passive: Gangplank gains 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 Attack Damage and 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 % Movement Speed.

Active: Gangplank fires his pistol into the air, disabling his passive boost but increasing his Attack Damage by 12 / 19 / 26 / 33 / 40 and Movement Speed by 8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20% and nearby allied champions' Attack Damage and Movement Speed by half that amount for 7 seconds.

Cooldown 25 seconds

Cost 50/55/60/65/70 mana


Explanation:

MS + AD buff. Very good for engage/disengage.



R: Cannon Barrage
Signals Gangplank's ship to fire upon an area for 8 seconds. Each cannonball deals 75/120/165 (+20% of ability power) damage and slows enemy units 25% for 1.25 seconds.

Cooldown 120/115/110 seconds

Cost 100 mana

Range 20000


Explanation:

A strong AOE global slow. You can help your team in any situation or help yourself getting a kill.

Basics

This guide is about getting as much Gold as possible, to get your core Items more quickly. With your + + you will get MASSIVE amount of Gold, if you concentrate on farm and lasthit with as much as possible. I normally get after ~20 Mins.
GP also likes in his team (because of his bonus gold passive). A blue buff is also strong, expecially in early game, since you can farm limitless and harass your enemy.

Early Game

It's important to know your enemy. If you underestimate him, it will turn out very badly for you. Try to concentrate on farming and not on trading with your opponent. You can harass him with your , but I would recommend saving the Mana for the lasthits (you get 50% of the costs back if you kill something with it). When you have enough Gold for , push the lane and go back, as you should try to get the GP/10 as fast as possible (for more Gold). You should always take a few for more safety in lane. With the Mana/HP-Regeneration of you will have a good sustan and can start to trade with your enemy. Get as soon as possible, too, because it gives GP/10 + adds 2 Gold to your income on every lasthit (stacks with your ). As soon as you get , you should be able to win trades and kill your opponent.
Note: If you fall behind, always ask your jungler for help. With your , , and , you have a good potential for getting your enemy killed. When you get ganked, you can remove all CC with your .

Mid Game

In Midgame you should have /, , and . Now you should be able to push the enemies outer turrent and put preassure on the other lanes (Works very well with ). It's the time when teamfights are starting to break out, but I will explain this in another chapter.

Late Game

When you have all your items, you will be very strong in and out teamfights. GP is a very good split pusher (only with ). But if you do split push, you should always have your available, because if not, your team can get engaged and lose easily, since it's 4vs5.

Team Fights

This is maybe the most important chapter. It is about postioning and your roll in teamfights. The most important thing, is to protect the carrys from skillshots and prevent the enemy team from diving onto them. Your + are are very strong teamfight abilities, as the are AOE. You should also try to focus the AD/AP carry. I have seen a lot of people focusing the tanks, cause they are the nearest targets (expecially in low ELO). That's definately not what to do. If you have , try to hit as much enemies as possible with it (expecially the AD Carry and other AA-Champs). If you place correctly, you have a good potential of winning fights.

Lane Matchups


Darius is famous for an extremely strong lane. Try to avoid taking damage, because it is very high. If you farm from a distance with your , you should be fine. Don't fight him, if you have 3 or more bleedings.



Irelia is a very strong laner and you shoud avoid fights when she hits level 6. Try to use your if she stuns you and try to hold her on distance. If her W is down, you can AA her a few times, but she can heal that up very quickly with her W and R.



Jax can snowball very hard and is incredebly strong late game. He wants to farm just like you and it depends on the player what you should do. If the player is agressive and tries to trade with you, you should use your when he stuns you and him for the slow. If he is defensive, you should try to harass him, so he can't get free CS.



That may be one of the most annoying matchups. He can slow your MS and AS and you can't his E (AS slow). This makes it very hard to last hit with AA's. He is also one of the tankiest champs in LoL, so you can't really damage him. Try to farm with your and help other lanes with or normal gankes, since you should not be able to win the lane, except your jungler camps and you get a huge lead. But in normal cases: Ban him!



Nasus needs to farm, just like you. So you should harass him a bit, so he can't get CS without taking damage. He has also one of the strongest slows in the game (MS + AS) and that makes it very hard to last hit with AA's. The good thing is, you can his slow. Ask your jungler to help you out and try to get a lead, so he doesn't get CS, because if he is well farmed, he is a beast late game.



Pantheon is a very strong early game champ. He can kill you very fast, if you don't watch out. Ask your jungler to help you, if you are too afraid of him. If he has his passive up, make sure to hit him once before using your , because he can block the shot. He also has a strong gank ultimate, so warn your team, if he runs down the river or another spot to jump.



Renekton is not very easy to deal with, because of his high damage, stun, sustain and gap closer. His early game pressure is incredibly strong and he can kill you in the blink of an eye. If he stuns you, use your and run for your life. Watch his fury bar, because if he has full fury, you should be careful. The key to victory is him getting weaker in mid-lategame and you getting stronger. Try to outfarm him and call miss, if he leaves, because his ganks are very strong, expecially with his ultimate.



Shen is basicly THE TANK. Since he relys on AS, an early into a is a good counter item vs him. If you see him teleporting somewhere, you can follow up with your own to deny their advantage. Sadly, you do not have any skill to interuppt his ultimate. If he teleports somewhere and your is down, just shove the lane and try to get towers.

Final Comments

In my opinion, GP is a safe pick against the most top laners. If you don't know what to pick against someone, pick GP.
