Introduction

Hi! I'm Asmodeus. I'm comming from SC2 background, but regardless of which game i play, i'm always looking for the best and most sure way to win games. After testing a specific Garen playstyle, and seeing that it works very well i decided to share it with you guys.

Pros & Cons

[+] Strong in solo que
[+] No weak stage of the game
[+] Very fast move speed - effective roaming
[+] Strong when defending, good wave clear - can 1v2
[+] Amazing escape, "can't touch this!"
[+] Fun and rewarding to play - i mean, c'mon fucking ninja sprinting at people in full plate?!


[-] Weak vs high CC champions like Ashe or Teemo
[-] Melee
[-] Weak auto attacks
[-] Requires specific items to work

Masteries

When grabbing masteries for Garen, you always want some move speed and CDR. So you can make a defensive build and grab 10% tenacity, or offensive and take 10% armor penetration. Remember, that procentage increase from masteries will be almost always better than a flat ammount.

Runes

Marks:

  • 9x AD or 9x AD/lvl or 9x Armor penetration

Flat AD is the best early, scaling AD or ArP will be the best late game, depending on which ArP items you get. All of those work well.


Seals:

  • 9x flat HP or 9x Armor

Health works best because of your passive early on, which lets you save the potions for longer, and get your first item faster


Glyphs:

  • 9x flat CDR

Unless you go over the 40% this is the best choice. In early game it will give you more silence, more harass and more escape ability.


Quints:

  • 3x Move speed

No alternatives.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

adds the range you will often need to finish someone off without dying to the tower.

to finish someone off when you can't reach them with the help of your Q, or if it's on CD, and for jumping over the walls.

You have your Q for the speed and E for the ghost walk. No point in taking it at all. If you can't make plays without ghost you might as well alt+f4.

That's your Q+E. Not worth it, certainly not better than ignite or flash.

This is the only alternative summoner spell i would take. Firstly - Garen is bad vs other melee champions if they're not running away from you, or if the fight takes longer than your Q+E. Secondly - it's better to slow someone down before he gets in the safety of his tower instead of flashing into the tower range. The use of this spell is a little bit more limited than flash but it's still good.

You want the fights to be shorter, not longer.


Item Builds

This is what makes Garen work

Start with Always, always, always.

First trip back will normally be

If you're having trouble vs strong harass or you can't catch people to harass them you get

If you're doing extremely well, get an

(This is common misconception, people think, that they should get gold items when they're behind, when in fact there are only 2 situations where you wanna get them. 1. You're very ahead and you don't need items with strong stats to help you. 2. You are not able to fight, or even clear your jungle because you'll instantly die/get ganked etc.)

After you get your upgraded boots and brutalizer, you get the most usefull item for Garen:

You will most likely grab a first, before build the full item.

Next, it's time for the defensive items.
scaling with your W, is insanely strong, and most of the time you'll be able to get away with W+Q after a rez. You should get it every game (at least, untill it's nerfed)

The defensive route:
Vs AP demage, you get the . The added move speed is very nice.
Vs AD, you can get , or . I don't get those items often, but if i do, i prefer the first one.

The offensive route:

(buy first if you can). This will get you enaugh demage to shred people when they'll get more health.

Vs armored targets, the 6th item should be .

Somewhere along the way, you should complete your . Use the active as much as you can.


Other items to consider? None. Don't buy any of that other shit. All the items on the list above allow you for a flexible build, and every time you want to adjust to the current situation in the game you have the answer for everything. You have gold items, AD, CDR, move speed, Armor, MR, HP. Just adjust the order accordingly.

Don't buy. You don't need health before your phage, if you're dying at that stage, it's only because of your mistakes. You don't need sustain at that stage, you have your passive and your potions last long. And for demage just get long swords to get your brutalizer faster.

Don't ever buy this item.

Skills

Passive: Perseverance

Explanation:

Trade demage - go back and heal with passive - repeat. Amazing passive.




Q: Decisive Strike

Explanation:

Always 1st. You run faster, it's your only cc, it's your escape, it's your demage with auto attack reset. Against champions without skillshots/aoe you can just rush to the bush and auto+q+auto them for 1/3 of their health and if they try to figh you just kill them.

If you have MS advantage or if the enemy makes a mistake, always try to auto attack before Q. In team fights use the silence on AP carry.




W: Courage

Explanation:

This passive makes you a tank for free. Makes GA borderline OP on garen, same with Force of nature. Time it well, before getting hit by a CC/slow etc. It will make your life much easier. You can use it to tank towers and survive team fights.





E: Judgment

Explanation:

Max first. Amazing wave clear and jungle camp killer. Cancel it to get another auto attack if you have , because it doesn't proc the slow. Abuse the ghost walk to run away with it.





R: Demacian Justice

Explanation:

Makes me smile, every time i press R ;) Another reason to get 40% CDR. You can cast it while spinning or doing anything else.



Final Comments

That's it. Garen is incredibly fun to play and very underestimated because people always take the wrong items/runes/masteries. People play Garen like a cary and get kited, without the ability to utilize all the demage they have. Or they build a full tank and hurt their team more than help, because even if they can't die, they don't benefit from staying alive longer, since all Garen has is a single target silence, which you'll use anyway.

But Garen is strong, you can 1v2, abuse the bush, farm like crazy clrearing jungle and minion waves with 1 judgement, you run super fast and 3 enemies can't catch you. You do alot of demage to everyone, regardless of the stage of the game. I hope this guide clears out some of the misconceptions about Garen, and i'll see some more tanky assassins on the field of battle.
