Champion Matchups

Introduction

Greetings SoloMid,

After countless games as Shaco, I have decided to create this guild for anyone interested in playing Shaco for the first time or the seasoned Shaco players. I have play too many games as shaco. Like I need to go to rehab. New items are exciting. The new jungle buffed Shaco in my opinion. So without further adieu: my season 3 shaco build.


Pros and Cons :


Pros

- What more do you want as a champion: guaranteed crit, a fear, a slow, a 4 second invisibility and an built in flash. Oh yeah, and there are two of you!!
- Great damage output.
- Snowballs well.
- mobility
- One of the best backdoor champs in the game.(win <5% of games this way)
- Strong pusher once tiamat is built.
- Hard to master, but very rewarding when you do.
- If played well the enemies will get very angry and waste their own time.
- Can easily solo Baron/Dragon
- Good escape mechanism
- Can chase very well
- does the worm



Cons

- Hard to master
- Kinda mana hungry(mana hungry mids like karthus don't work really well). 2 early blue buffs really helpful
- Buggy


I believe he can be one of the best junglers in the game especially now that the jungle is a harder single target focused.

Even if he can´t carry 1 vs 5 he still can win the game nearly solo, just because of his awesome early game control.
With his amazing ganking power he can help his team win their lanes, which can very easily snowball into a win.
He can stop the enemies from farm just with his presence in the game.

Item Builds

Ok riot wants shaco back. Their is no other reason for these items.


Item reasoning:
+ = Crazy AOE AD burst or plus sustain heal

+ = Crazy AOE AD burst or plus sustain heal *2. Your clone receives the same item buffs

+ = Crazy single target damage. they are multiplicative


+ = GTFO. You now have alot of agro burn rubber and get out!

= jungle is hard knock life now. Plus lifesteal to help with is nice.

How Shaco Fights
+ + to do a high burst to AOE taunt their team and then bust + and get out.

Heal up and go back in. Rinse and repeat

Runes

9 Armor Penetration Marks: 12 armor penetration(approx. subject to change)---> that brings all the jungle minions armor down to 0

9 armor Seals: Jungle required.

3 Damage Quintessentials: 6.75(approx. subject to change) damage is nice for quicker clears.

9 Cooldown/level: Deceive more? YES PLEASE. BOX more? YES PLEASE. ULTY more? Yes Please. SHIV more? YES please. ~9.8%(approx. subject to change) cooldown reduction is great endgame.

9 Flat/Level magic resist Blues: Both are very good against mage comps. Go flat magic resist against high damage mids.

Masteries

21/9/0: Take points in lethality and frenzy for a bonus with deceive. Take armor and damage reduction in the defensive tree.

21/0/9: Take points in lethality and frenzy for a bonus with deceive. Take move speed, cooldown reduction, and increased buff duration in support.

The offensive tree is needed for jungle assassins however spend your 9 other points how you see fit. The two are my current pre-built Masteries.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:
Smite is a must.

Pick one the 3 below based off of play style and team comp.

for a team with a lot of damage. Or you team didn't bring one.

for a squishy team. Or you team didn't bring one.

only if your team has at least 1 exhaust and 1 ignite and their team comp doesn't require a counter. I typically bring this when I can due to the my play style and want for versatility. This is great for the red and blue ganks shown in the jungle section.

Skills

Passive: Backstab
Shaco deals 20% bonus damage when striking a unit from behind.

Explanation:
This is the difference between a good shaco and a bad shaco. Use it!




Q: Deceive
Shaco instantly stealths for 3.5 seconds, and teleports to target nearby location. If he attacks while stealthed, the attack is guaranteed to crit for 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120% bonus damage.

Cooldown 10seconds
Cost 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 / 50mana
Range 25000


Explanation:
The bread and butter of shaco. Use it wisely and creatively. Don't make your movements obvious. A lot of the time I will run into a bush or next to a wall and act like I jumped it but I actually jump towards the following enemy and run to the nearest fog of war. A lot of people think that you would run to safety, use this idea against them. Because sometimes safety is behind enemy lines as shaco. Be careful for warded areas when doing this. With blue buff and the rune suggested your deceive will be up every 8 seconds which will let you get into a fight and out without anyone killing you.




W: Jack In The Box
Shaco creates a Jack in the Box at the target location. It will Stealth after 2 seconds, and pop out when an enemy comes near, fearing nearby enemies for 0.5 / 0.75 / 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 seconds and attacking them.

It deals 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 (+20% of ability power) damage, and lasts 90 seconds while stealthed or 5 seconds while firing. Casting Jack In The Box does not break stealth.

Cooldown 16seconds
Cost 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70mana
Range 425


Explanation:
Boxes are great. Uses:

Tanking Minions: Due to new leash mechanics(closest champion pulls agro) boxes can be used to aggro minions at will be placing your box on behind the minion and then controlling your character to move towards or backwards based on what you want.

Pushing: Fear and damage can keep the lane pushed or push it.

Wards: Help out you teammates by dropping a box every time it is off cooldown basically. Make sure to ward the tri-bushes, top and bottom bushes, dragon, and baron.

Protection: Place boxes to protect your escape route when pushing a tower or in a dangerous situation. Always when stealing the enemy blue or red place a box as protection and don't us it as damage. This has saved my life a 100 times and pissed the opposing team off even more.

Bush ganks: 1.5 sec fear is enough time.

Misc: Be creative.

The most important thing about boxes is that when you get a kill or your team gets a kill because of your boxes make sure say "To ALL: BOX BOX BOX" and nothing more.



E: Two-Shiv Poison
Passive: While Two-Shiv Poison is ready to cast: Shaco's attacks poison his target, reducing their movement speed by 20/22.5/25/27.5/30% and chance to hit by 20/22.5/25/27.5/30% for 2 seconds.

Active: 40/80/120/160/200 (+100% of ability power)(+50% per attack damage) Damage to target enemy, and poisons them for 3 seconds.

Cooldown 13seconds
Cost 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70mana
Range 625


Explanation:
It takes a little while to know when and when not to use the active. Once you figure it out you will know the difference.




R: Hallucinate
Shaco creates an illusion of himself nearby, which deals 75% of Shaco's damage and receives 150% increased damage. (Deals half damage to turrets.) On death, the illusion deals 300 / 450 / 600 (+100% of ability power) magic damage to nearby enemies.

Lasts up to 30 seconds.

Cooldown 100 / 90 / 80seconds
Cost 100mana
Range 500


Explanation:
Uses of the Ulty:

Dodge: Dodge ults like karthus,lux,caitlyn, and etc.

1v1: This allows you to solo almost anyone carries, baron, dragon, and tanks. Rammus and nasus is rough.

Pushing Towers/BD: THIS IS WHAT SHACO DOES BEST. Once you get a better build ,you can solo towers with your clone and you while taking no damage. If you place your boxes right to, it ISN'T a suicide mission either. Most of the time the opposing team will try to stop you and you will make them stop pushing and come after you. This allows you team to basically do whatever they want while you bring the enemy team on a wild goose chase.

Baiting: You can bait the enemy team but they would have to be stupid.

Skill Order

Get your ult when you can!


Two shiv is the highest priority after alt. It is you main ganking skill. The passive and active slow are needed to gank effectively. The "blind" to minions is nice for jungling.



Max this second for longer fears and increased damage.


This is shaco's most fun move however not particularly great when leveled up. The damage from the crit really comes out late game. Max last.

I stick to this skill level and rarely very. If you dc early in the game then put more in boxes to jungle quicker.

Jungling

Start Normal Blue Jungle route, get friends to guard. I would suggest playing other junglers to learn times and health levels of their jungles so that you can counter them.

Season 3 TIP 1: Due to new leash mechanics(closest champion pulls agro) boxes can be used to aggro minions at will be placing your box on behind the minion and then controlling your character to move towards or backwards based on what you want.

Gank routes:
RED are the best!
Blue are good.
Black are only good if really pushed or not warded.
Purple are good for counter jungling.

Stages of the Game

I recommend "The true Joker"'s guide to the stages of the game. He explains it very well. Below is his words on the topic.

Early game, Levels 1-6:
Goals:
1. Farm and clear your jungle as many times as possible. Shaco becomes slower and slower at jungling as the game goes on. Try to get a lot of kills for your team to get them ahead.
2. Gank a lot. Shaco can easily become underleveled because of too many ganks.
3. Ward Dragon and lanes after ganking them. You have an unlimited amount of free wards, so why not drop a off for your allies' lanes as a parting gift?
4. Invade the enemy jungle if their jungler is weak. Try to shut them down and set up traps to kill them in their own jungle.
5. If you are fed, you should be able to complete your boots of mobility and wriggles lantern here.

Mid game, Levels 6-11:
Goals:
1. Keep on farming. You do NOT want to get behind in the game.
2. Kill Dragon. With a wriggles and level 6, you should be able to solo Dragon. Be sure to drop a so that you don't get ganked at Dragon.
3. Try to finish your core build here. Aim for a couple of minor defensive items too.
4. Splitpush lanes while your team is occupied on another lane. Don't forget to ward when you splitpush so that you don't get ambushed and killed. The key to winning games is taking towers and Shaco excels at just that.
5. If you are doing well, grab an and start farming those wards!
6. Steal Dragon whenever possible. You should have it warded at all times. A dragon kill is equivalent to around a champion kill per person. With five people on each team, the team that takes dragon becomes five champion kills ahead. You can take dragon with a and . If your teammates aren't around, go in solo, steal dragon, use , and fight to the death. Who knows, maybe you'll pick up a kill or two.

Late game, Levels 11-18:
Goals:
1. Teamfights should be erupting all around you at this time. You have two choices, stay with your team or splitpush. The advantages of staying with your team are you will have stronger teamfights. The disadvantage is that Shaco is not a teamfighter. He is considered a "Janitor Champion". Shaco is one of the best KSers in the game. (Kill Secure/Steal) He can take down carries under half health very quickly. By taking out carries, your team can push.
2. Splitpush too! Don't just teamfight. As I emphasized before, do not forget to ward! You will have and to help you cut down on costs. A reason why is useful is because if your team gets engaged on 4v5, you can teleport in and clean up the enemy.
3. Do not forget to buy and clear out wards. Wards win games and by destroying wards, you can win the game for your team.
4. Steal Baron or take Baron whenever you can. Simple as that. A sacrifice is worth it if your team can benefit off of it.

Team Fights

Basically KIll the carry and get out!!

+ + to do high burst damage which will also act as an AOE taunt of the entire enemy team and then bust + and get out. Try to get as much damage down before getting out.

Heal up and go back in. Rinse and repeat

If someone has oracles: KILL THEM or don't rely on stealth. Boxes are crucial for survival when and enemy has an oracles. Use ULT to escape if necessary.

Problem enemies:

Battles with singed: The hardest battles. never chase singed. EVER. This rule applies to shaco too...I know it is sad.

Battles with Rammus: Use ult before the taunt and you should be able to dodge it and live.

Battles with shacos: Don't worry this build is better than theirs.

Final Comments

Please test out the guide. I will answer questions as they come in. If you want additional reasoning or you have a video request let me know.

Video requests:
Do not ask for things that happen rarely like penta-kills.
Do not ask for a AP shaco build(After much testing there is no reason to try again)

I main jungle so I am also willing of answering comments about general jungling.

Hi, i like your guide-build though this is not what i exactly build on shaco atm. i will try your build soon.

i kind of disagree with the lvl2 gank, i love to gank mid on lvl 2 and see the enemy mider burn his flash with no reason, it makes my teammates life easier and the enemy team be afraid of ganks.

19/6/10 Hydra, Scimitar, Ghostblade, BT, Zephyr and IE..... Dear god did I do a lot of damage and carry that game like a pro.

Good guide. This was my 3th time with Shaco and he's so awesome :D

Take it if you want. roughly 200 g more for a 30 minute game if you are smiting alot.



@DantePhreak

PD is good for small battles but doesn't have any survival. zeal is a good purchase either way. Build PD if you are going for high damage as a duel-er. Build Statikk shiv in you can afford it during the mid game. Overall I have had a much better experience with statikk shiv due to the mid game damage boost.

Sword of the Divine works. It is a good choice for 1 v 1 s and for burst damage. Be sure to deceive them first and then use it so the you can get 4 crits.

Wit’s end is not as good as scimitar due to it’s passive taking attacks to build up. However if you build shaco with a PD/shiv(AS) the magic damage per hit does start to ad up. As a general rule of thumb, I don’t build Wit’s End unless 1. I am acting as the teams tank(shen/mundo/jax) or 2. I have an attack speed of 1.5 before buying it.



Statikk Shiv is good. Build it based off if your opponents comp.(very good against a squishy mage heavy comp). I like this item.

Zephyr is like triforce’s lesser known baby brother. It is good in mid game but doesn’t have to power come late game. If you want tenacity and aren’t worried about the magic damage coming your way build is in lieu of Merc Boots.

I really love this build! It works so well (especially that tiamat into ravenous hydra) but i changed one thing: I built a zeal after finishing boots of mobility, wriggles, and tiamat, and finished the Phantom dancer late game... I just iked those early crits and the attack speed. Would you consider this good? Moreover, i'd like to know which item you consider better for mid/late game: PD or SShiv? I thought Pd was more useful because the Shiv is mainly good eary because of the avarice gold bonus... but then i dont know so what do you think?



I started playing Shaco as a laner and then stumbled over this... I tried it out since I had little experience with jungling but it worked really well and i decided to play a lot more jungle!

Would Sword of the Divine, Wit's End, Statikk Shiv, or Zephyr be viable on Shaco?

Sword of the Divine - Gives a lot of attack speed and 100% crit when activated. Goes well will Ravenous Hydra and Infinity Edge I think. Passive attack speed also good for farming and pushing.

Wit's End - Gives attack speed, magic resist, and also the on-hit effect that your clone can proc as well.

Statikk Shiv - Great burst with Infinity Edge. Gives stats like Phantom Dancer. Falls a bit late game though. Works well with Deceive as you mentioned.

Zephyr - Attack damage, attack speed, movement speed, a bit of cool down reduction, and also tenacity. I don't see many people build this item, and I've never tried it myself, so not sure if it is good or not. Tenacity probably not really needed as you are an assassin and have the Mercurial Scimitar to remove Crowd Control.

@Cold scars



I had it in my guild earlier but got rid of it. In my testing(just shy of 1500 elo) hydra has worked for me. I typical build Shaco lean on attack speed and heavy on ad for burst. Hydra allows for split pushing and insane sustain during the mid/late game. I like to put pressure on the enemy team. I will test it more and get back to you. but when I tried it(one game) and while it was good for 1v1s i wasn't feeling it overall due to the lack of AS shaco has in this build.



Note: Decieve does charge statikk shiv ~25 charges for a full deceive.

So after much testing in season 2 I dropped it. The guide isn't optimize perfectly for season 3 yet because I am not on the PBE.



Shaco doesn't need the armor pen if you rock the runes.



And focusing on quicker clears and ganks will get you more money the avarice.



- With avarice I clear in 10% slower then a vamp scepter(+10ad +10%lifesteal). Assuming a full clear in 3 minutes at level 6: 2g/10sec + 2g per minion kill ~ 2*18(two wraith camps) - 2* 35(pots)=2*18+2*18-3*35= +2. Compared that to a vamp scepter which give the same base gold from minions as avarice: -35(pot)-18 seconds on clear. I have more health for ganks and a quicker clear however in that time I did loss 37 gold in comparison to avarice blade. In my opinion - 18 sec clear > 37 gold.



What I noticed so far in season 3:

Ever since the season 3 jungle changes wriggle's lifesteal is needed if you expect to help lanes with ganks. Shaco was a ganking champion in season 2. Season 2 was almost forced junglers to gank. However now I find it better to jungle a little more early game and gank more once farmed/level farmed. No more level 2 ganks...level 4 ganks like season 1.
