Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hey guys and welcome to S3 O.o For real the first time i played after the changes it completely shattered my mind....everything is blue!! Oh whatever. So with this guide i wanna help you to get along with all the new stuff and the changes Riot came up with. So just as usual:

-Sorry for my bad grammar.
-I had fun writing this and i`m interested in your opinions and thought about this guide or Jungle Shen so please leave a comment and like or dislike :) Thanks.

-I`m playing Shen since about a year. I have experience and can help you get along with him although i don`t played much ranked games with him cause i`m my team`s top laner, where i also most time play Shen btw ;)(if anyone want me to write a top lane guide just ask for it :) )

On skala from 1-10 representing the difficult for Shen in Jungle i would say he lies between 7-8 cause he`s very slow early and you may fall far behind other champions but often you can come back in mid to late game with some well coordinated teamfightes.

My Definition of a jungler and why most people don`t get it!!

What a Jungler basically offers to your team:
  • He creates a second Solo lane what offers the chance of an advantage in gold and experience due to the fact that it don`t has to be shared.
  • He carries for your team so it can do Dragon, Nashor and Buffs faster and saver through out the Bonus DMG over the enemies. In lane this would put him into disadvantage cause don`t effect Champions but in the jungle it even helps him getting faster and building up an advantage.
  • He pressures the enemies lane due to his unpredictable movements. That includes Gold used for Wards, loose of experience and gold cause enemies feel unsafe and keep distance, temporal majority situations or even defending turrets while mates are dead, have to back or help at other lanes.

What people think jungler are there for:
  • Win a lost lane or negate all the mistakes made by this lane.
  • Camping there lane although they can`t gank so they feel save.
  • Be at least Superman saving them everywhere, every time when ever they want.

What you do not have to do as a Jungler:
  • Gank Lanes that are fed so hard they even deal more DMG than you + the lane guardians.
  • Gank warded lanes with no or a slight chance of success.
  • Give Buffs to the lane if they can`t make good use of it or if you need it.


Also with a jungler in the team lanes still have to win or at least don`t lose the lane on there own!!!

Why should i play Shen(beside the fact that he is a ninja)?

Well there are as with any champ pro and cons for playing Shen especially in the Jungle. One important thing to begin with: Jungle Shen is pretty hard if you cant manage your gank`s well!! If your no experienced in jungling or ganking try some champs that are easier like:,,

So the pro and cons for shen...
PRO
  • That incredible nice Ultimate
  • Tanky but also can deal some pretty nice Damage
  • Strong ganks when well timed taunts are done
  • The passiv stacks with HP and works well with AS, also against Towers
  • That incredible nice Ultimate
  • Very good kiting and turret diving

CONS
  • Very slow Jungler until he got or
  • Riot removed 2 of my core items -.- Now Shen lose much of his early Durability cause he has to get AS first
  • High CD Ulti
  • If you cant get some gold through ganks early so you can get AS for jungling you will fall behind cause your so slow. The result will be you still have to buy AS to keep up and wont be able to react to the increasing DMG of the enemy team ( Devil within) :(

Masteries

As you can see i take defensive Masteries mainly and they also focus on Dmg dealt by champions. As i said you gonna lose durability early game to increase your AS but you still wanna be tanky enough to take the DMG instead of your teammates:

  • Summunor`s resolve:I just like to get the 10g but you also can put that point in Tenacious.

  • Durability+Veteran`s Scars;Juggernaut:Health is what a tank need, Health is what scales your passiv and the Q heal.

  • Though Skin + Bladed Armor:Better Jungle speed!

  • Hardiness:More Def for the jungle and against Enemys

  • Unyielding+Block:Still a pretty nice Masterie and i also wanna get Block so i have to take this anyway.

  • Relentless: Most times teams only will have about 2 stuns, snares ore something that keeps you were you are but these are blown for you carries. You will mainly only have to deal with slows.

  • Safeguard:Well that`s something you can do as you like. My Opinion is that i don`t need the masteries left to choose but i think it would be said to lose a kill cause you can`t take one or two shots from a turret.

  • Honor Guard:Well i don`t have to say anythig about this? DMG reduction, DMG reduction, DMG
reduction.

  • Reinforced Armor:Also more DMG reduction. You could also put this into "good Hands" what really gives an significant Death time reduction late game.

For the rest:

  • Fury:You just have to get all AS you can for better jungle times.

  • Wanderer:As i get Boots pretty late but i need the movement speed for ganking this is just a must have.

Runes

I don`t think there are other runes that would work so well. You know seals and glyphs are standard for tankes or most champs anyway. AS for jungling and movement speed for ganking. Thats all.

Summoner Spells




Explanation:
I use smite for stealing buffs, dragon, baron and for better jungle times. Ghost is for ganks and escaping but you may also switch this for but the thing is works well for escaping but not so good for chasing and as i most times can Taunt over a wall to escape i think ghost worth more.

Don`t take other spells!! They wont work well until your enemies are fools and don`t ward or start to run in circles when you gank...

Skills

Passive: Ki Strike

Ki Strike - Every 8 seconds, Shen's next attack deals bonus damage. Each time Shen attacks, Ki Strike's cooldown is reduced.

Explanation:
Thats the reason why Shen is able to jungle.
Note: Try to use its full potential and don`t aim at mobs with 10 hp left!! It`s totally ok to switch the targets when jungling as long as you focus the biggest mob mainly.



Q: Vorpal Blade
Vorpal Blade - Damages target unit and life taps him, healing allies that attack the target.
Deals 60/100/140/180/220 (+0.6) magic damage to target unit and marks them for 5 seconds.

Allied spells and attacks against this target heal them for 6.0/10.0/14.0/18.0/22.0 (6/10/14/18/22 + 0.015 [1.5% of Shen's max Health]) over 3 seconds.

Killing an enemy with Vorpal Blade restores 0.0 Health instantly instead.
Cost 60 Energy
Range 475

Explanation:
The DMG isn`t something to mention just a little bit if needed but the sustain you get from this worth maxing this first. After you got or you will be able to heal yourself at wraithes and wolves and won`t lose life at the golems in combination with .
Don`t spam this while ganking!!You need the energy for !! Only use the if you and no one else can take the kill or to beat up a little bit more Hp so your mates will kill it`s target.




W: Feint

Feint - Shen shields himself, absorbing incoming damage for a few seconds.
Shen shields himself, absorbing the next 70/115/160/205/250 (+0.6) damage. Lasts up to 3 seconds.

While Feint holds, his attacks reduce Ki Strike's cooldown by an additional 1.5 seconds.
Cost 50 Energy
Range 0

Explanation:
Spam in the jungle and use it after you taunted someone. After cause restores energy. So if you may have to use skills quickly after another you may can`t cast a skill cause you did it the other way around.
While Feint holds, his attacks reduce Ki Strike's cooldown by an additional 1.5 seconds.




E: Shadow Dash

Shadow Dash - Shen dashes rapidly toward a target location, taunting enemy champions he encounters and dealing minor damage.
Shen dashes in a direction, dealing 50/85/120/155/190 (+0.5) magic damage to champions and taunting champions he collides with for 1.5 second(s).

Taunted enemies are forced to attack Shen and deal 50% reduced damage.

Restores 40 Energy per champion affected.
Cost 120 Energy
Range 575

Explanation:
Also not much to say. Use it to get the carrys in teamfights or to dash over Walls to escape or chase an enemy(only if you can take him down, you can taunt him behind a wall or you can lead him into your team)
WHen ganking be sure you can lend this but don`t try to go straight to your enemy and taunt him. Cut off his escape and wait as long as you can with this skill! You wont be able to use it a sec time! If you can taunt full range through him so he will follow you a short way into the direction you want him to but mention you can`t catch up if you don`t kill him until the taunt ends. If you got you may be able to use taunt a second time.




R: Stand United

Stand United - Shen shields target allied champion from incoming damage, and soon after teleports to their location.
Places a shield on target allied champion, absorbing 250/550/850 (+1.35) damage for 5 seconds. After channeling for 3 seconds, Shen teleports to the target's location.
CostNo Cost
Range 25000

Explanation:
Well this ulti isn`t so easy to handle so you get the perfect results. First of all Never use this to escape!!!(as long as you wont lose 600g for killing spree). The CD is way to high to wast it for such a thing. Also be careful when trying to save a team mate. He may cant be saved and you gonna waste your ultimate for nothing or whats even worth he dies short after you teleported and you also dies. Also don`t use it when any of your mates dies in the middle of nowhere or when he deserves to die cause he acted foolish!
Ping before use so your team may turn around so your in range for a and you may turn things around.


Skill Order

Well i max first for the jungle sustain and second to get more tanky and stay healthy. Why dont max first? Cause the only reason i would do this are taunt duration and CDR but geting points in just will increase the DMG(haha DMG nice joke xD).

Get when ever possible of course!!

Item Builds

Start


So i start of course with the new item cause it just gives a nice early jungle speed as well as take to be able to stay some time in the jungle adn to gank cause, i don`t want to waste time when i have to go back but i can`t buy any further core item. may work but then you have to get the gold from the ganks cause your very slow in the jungle and that`s not what a jungler is supposed to do in my opinion. He should give an advantage to the laner`s so they can beat up the enemy`s and also shall give the bruiser the chance to farm as well as the carry cause the minion don`t have to been shared with another one.

First Back

Most times you wont be able to buy anything else and i really recommend to immediately go back and buy if you got the gold. The reason is were simple: Jungle Speed+Sustain.When you got this thing you will be able to clear the jungle as fast as every other jungler cause you trigger more often with is your main source of DMG in the jungle and you wont lose to much HP cause of + anymore. It won`t happen but if your able to also buy or along with don`t mind and get + and wait for ! You wont gain anything useful from and this build won`t work if you would need . increases your DMG with as well as your heal with and gives more Durability for ganks. If you already have decide if you want to stay out of base for more ganks taking or if you want to farm faster and need some more Armor for the ADC or the Bruiser with or if your team really is behind and need a lot of ganks. Try to stay on the lane for almost one Wave if the gank fails cause you will need the experience!

Why is this my core?
As they made a special item for jungle tanks it just would be foolish to skip this advantage, so rush for in anyway. The thing i like the most about this and thats the reason for my second core item is that has the same passive like . As i normally take for the cc reduction now i can take which gives the best DMG resistance you can get against AD, and most teams have almost 3 AD champs, but also are the cheaper than .Never take cause of the MR!! That would be a waste. You could take or (the fu why is the picture blue?searched for it for years).
Now the second choice . Look at it`s thats and it should be obvious why i take this. AS+CDR+MS and holy ***** this passive, oh well i also can get this with but with this it doesn`t matter what i take! Must have but!!! if your not able to get when you first time get back never mind skip this take and upgrade to and add instead. The reason is you wont have the gold to sell later to get without falling behind with Durability and DMG. If get back but don`t already have the gold and try to wait for it`s the same. So the Early game will decide.

-You need the extra True-DMG for more effective ganks at the top lane and can offer some Durability for DMG cause you have some tanky guys like at top lane so he can play initiator.
-If you want to play as TrueDMGAttackspeedTankyJungler just like :D(Not a bad idea .... gonna try this :D)

I would most times take one of this cause it`s just awesome nice for HP+DEF but for the passive anyway.


Well i think is way better but until it is pretty viable to play without AP sometimes this items started to catch my attention more and more often.


Give it a try if you can offer the money its a great item to build out of .

Against AP:



Still a nice choice if you need MR and also the shield is nice but ever found an item i had more use from until now.


Well the only thing about this item is that most times the support will build one but beside that i would highly recommend taking one.

Sad thing but true is that building a lot of HP has started to get the meta in this game for almost every one even the ADC so you will almost ever have to buy one of these to keep up.

Some other things to mention:


Well... very expensive but good passive but i`m Shen so i never die and it`s a gold waste if i buy this for resistances so most times i don`t add this to my build.

Jungling

First thing to Note: Blue buff also gives Energy restore boost!!

My route is as i don`t need a Blue Buff: Wraiths -> Red -> Wolves and then i have to decide if i give my mid laner blue Buff, that would cost me some life, i normally have , or if i go back to the wraiths or try a gank top. I f you can do a gank and almost can get one kill do it. As long as you weren`t back you`re way to slow in the jungle and you will benefit more from ganking!

Another thing i do often when i`m at blue site:wolves-> smiteless blue and then go for the enemy`s red. So here i have to decide: Will i be able to finish the red in time before the enemy`s jungler shows up or do i have to wait and steal. Both are Risky cause you have to escape with the enemies knowing where you are. If you think you can`t take it right away or have a smooth escape grab a early instead of and smite over the wall. Another way is grab taunt at lvl 2 and taunt the enemy before he can smite and smite it yourself. Highly risky cause is your only chance to dash over a wall. The other chance you have is to suddenly add DMG to the golem. Many people in low elo will over react and waste smite right away cause they get feared.

Final Comments

As this guide seems to be very popular i want to update it immediately :D The problem i`m dealing with in the moment is that i`m about to write my final exams in school what means i`m very busy right now and short of time. Hm i really prefer Zephyr over SAG but i have no idea what item would fit to build out of Hunter`s Blade instead. I could also sale it and build Frozen but i guess thats too expensive and it also reduces your jungle speed again...will work on this. Thx for now and please tell me what you think about my idea.

I played shen with this build in a ranked game and i absolutely dominated so i thumbed this up, but i found a flaw with the item build.

getting the SAG (Soul of the Ancient Golem) as a core item with the zephyr is OK but its not getting its full advantage because the tenacity passive doesn't stack so i would recommend getting SAG with Wits End instead of the zephyr and making a separate route to getting a zephyr.

In my opinion the reason why you start with a buff is:

Blue:Better Clearing times

Red:Early gank

or what i also think is cause your team can help you with it easy and you will reach lvl 2 after killing what enables your second skill and as shen with the shield better durability in the jungle. So as i most times won`t skill Taunt as second skill for early ganks cause the lanes are not in a good position or something the red itself is wasted early but if i start blue and give it the the mid lane and thats something i really want to do cause it gives an important advatage to him i won`t reach lvl 2 if i start at the blue and thats connected with problems in the jungle. The second thing is when most junglers start at blue and your and the enemies blue have different respawn times it get a lot easier to save both for your team. Well thats just what i think but i never tried to start blue, give it to the mid and then continue jungling normally....have to try this i guess. Or did you tried that already?

This guide is quite good , from Shen player to another.

Just one thing though, I suggest you clean the first blue buff as soon as possible, should it be for you or your mid, because it will make the buff respawn sooner, and trust me, it is important.

The mastery description is wrong!Summoner's Wrath (Offense) also improves Ghost: increases the movement speed bonus by 35%!!

Thats the reason why i take it.

Dude, just noticed you have a point in Summoner's Wrath (Offense) but you run around Smite/Ghost. That's a wasted point.

That`s why i max it at last. I guess you misunderstood what i wrote, cause of my bad English :( What i mean is:

The only reason i would skill Taunt would be if the taunt duration would increase or the CD would get less but as with skilling it only the DMG increase i max it at last.

I like your guide its given me some insight, however I found a flaw you put, ranking up shadow dash doesn't increase the taunt duration. Just thought I'd let you know.
