Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hi Everyone,

This guide is not aimed at teaching you the mechanics of Janna, this is strictly passing on my knowledge of the new items and what can work with Janna. It is very likely I have missed a few key points in this guide as we are all new to s3 still.

I wrote a Janna guide during season 1 and it was pretty successful, here is my second guide to Janna who I have mained since she has been released.

Key Notes in this guide:
The new patch has been released and this is just my idea of what can be good, I'm not claiming it's perfect because we all need more practice with the new items so hopefully this guide will help a lot to the players who need to catch up in S3.

A little about myself

I don't claim to be a professional or full time player but I am a quick learner, I've read every single new item throughly and feel as though passing on my knowledge will help people.

I am not a very high ELO player, I am 1350 on the EUW and 1650 on the NA server.

Enjoy the Read

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
These two Items are core to most supports. However with the recent changes I feel a these twi are now also vital too.

heal now can grant you hp per level on the mastery tree, this is actually pretty good, but whats better is the fact it gives the same ammount of health to your ally as it does to yourself, combo this with barrier and you suddenly become really hard to kill in lane

This has now got a lower cool down, but has a lower range, this also reveals champions and when they have been spotted you can see where they go for 5 seconds. Great weapon for supports is being revived, you can use items now to gain better cool downs too, I have wrote more about it in my final notes.

Masteries

Masteries.

Wow this will be a lot of writing!

OK! some masteries are actually identical to the old season 2 ones, some are completely new.

So, lets split the masteries up in terms of usefulness.

Core Masteries-

Greed(4) - This gives 2 gold per 10 seconds, this helps you buy items, its definitely core.
Pick Pocket(1) - You can apply shield on your self, go hit an enemy and get 5 gold, CUTE.
Wealth(1) - Starting off with 50 extra gold lets you pick up an extra ward, necessary, in this build.
Mastermind(3) - Better cooldowns on summoners means more use of summoners especially with CV/
Biscuiteer(1) - This will let you start off with a potion which you wont be able to afford with my build
Explorer(1) - This provides you with an extra defencive ward which helps a lot since you can only start
with two wards now

None core masteries, still useful though
Wanderer(3) - Movespeed with Janna is one of her main strengths, lets keep it, whilst out of combat you
you gain movement speed
Nimble(1) - Same as above.

Other masteries.

I believe all the other masteries are self explanatory and were used in season 2 any way so I will skip explaining the rest of the masteries for now.

Runes

21 armor - 13 magic resist - 3 gold per 10 runes

I find these runes are really effective right now, it gives you the armor you need to take a few hits from their adc and most of the time you are against a support that deals magic damage, so the magic resist also helps.

I know there are alternative runes such as mana regen and cool down glyphs however I dont feel the mana regen glyphs are needed any more since you can now get a lot of mana regen items very quickly, this helps a lot

Starting Off The Game

Since you are taking the extra gold mastery and the ward and biscuit mastery you can quite easily rush a philosophers stone now.

First Items to buy
faerie-charm + rejuvenation-bead + sight-ward2

What you get to start with
+50 Gold
total-biscuit-of-rejuvination
explorers-ward

So together this gives you 3 wards and a hybrid hp/mana pot to help keep you in lane.

Pre Mid Game Towards End Mid game

Pre Mid Game

Pre mid game you will be hoping to have achieved the build of your philosophers stone, level 1 boots and starting to work on sightstone.

By now you will be generating an extra 10 gold per 10 seconds with the philospher stone, runes and masteries and I feel with the new global gold buff and pickpocket you no longer need to rush into building kages lucky pick (heart of gold wouldnt be needed either but thats been removed). However if you arent picking up many assists or the lane is deadlocked and you feel the game will last a long time rush into that kage, otherwise avoid it, it can hurt your core build.

So pre mid game objectives for me would be to have these items.
boots-of-speed + philosophers-stone + sightstone

Mid Game Objectives

During mid game your objective should always be to build towards the enemy team and towards helping your own team at the same time, there is a key item I feel is possibly the best support item in game now and I will explain why shortly, but remember deciding on your build is essential.

O.K. here are the items I am going to talk about for your mid game.

zekes-herald
This was the item I was talking about earlier, being possibly the best item for supports in game right now. As you have noticed the changes between vamp scepter and dorans blade have made a huge impact on adc's I now feel it is really difficult for an ADC to get life steal, this greatly benifits a lot of champions who cant sacrifice their build well for the life steal, I usually always buy this item in a game, it is really effective. Remember it gives +20 AD now instead of attack speed so I think it is even more effective on caster adc's

aegis-of-the-legion
This item is still great, it no longer gives some attack damage but it is a lot tankier than it used to be and it is still very useful to your allies, I would generally build this against champions that can really burst people down swiftly, your aim will be to help stop that, protect the adc any way you can. It also benefits your team on a whole, everyone can use its aura not just the adc.

Finishing the item can work out really well, its saves you a lot of money on your warding but be careful, if you need to finish your other items quick, I suggest you do so, but in the long run this can save you a lot of money on wards if you use its active well.

Giving team mates spell vamp and ability power is really key if you have a lot of champions on your team, its ok to build this and not help your adc as much if you feel it benefits the team better

Notes
So far you may be thinking I should of listed items like and however I dont feel janna needs the extra slow from the kages last breath nor do I think its wise to get mikaels so early, I genuinly think it is a better late game item.

Towards Eng game and End game

Introduction

Building is essential to a support, you need to make the best choice you can make and have less money to spend than the rest of your team.

I feel the best suited items in season 3 here are very very situational, everything will be based around not getting caught and ending the game, what do you need? Can the enemy team quickly engage on your ADC, can they Stun him? Does your mid get shut down by silence so on so forth, these are just a few things you need to think of.

Well, the answer is the same as the answer in s2 for the quick engage champs you can get to your adc, use your monsoon and the use shurelyas.

If they have a lot of cc or shut down your mid with ease so on so forth there is a fancy new item called Mikaels Crucible.

If your team is getting heavy poke from range or just simply going down easily you can always upgrade your aegis too. There are plenty of options and I will discuss each new item below and when to purchase them.

Towards End

Always been a great item all round for supports, its the best item to help your team to engage or get out of trouble, it can be used offensively and defensively you should all be familiar with this and as I mentioned earlier you can use it to save your adc from harm.

This item is such a strong strong item, it can remove debuffs from champions such as silense, stuns and various other effects, it can realy turn a fight around, you can shield your ally, heal them and remove the stun in one go. This item takes a lot of practice to grasp though it is very easy to miss its activation and not get enough out of it.

End Game

This is the upgrade from aegis of the legion, basically it gives better defensive stats to everybody

This is an item I'm always curious about, now you know in soloq when you beg for people not to tower dive. Well now you don't have to worry as much as you can actually disable towers? This can be a great ally to you and your team, use this when your with tower diving crazy people. This item is also viable in mid game too, if it is absolutely necessary since your team loves diving!

Boots

I tend to find my self not buying boots as much any more, janna is really fast with just level 1 boots, if I am going to buy boots its either merc treads or ninja tabi depending on the opposing team, even when I do this I rarely buy the upgrade of them boots.

Final Comments

Situational items for yourselves to consider.

If you take CV build philostone early into for the cool downs on it, when I do this my build slightly changes and I take a kage lucky pick to compensate or another philostone. I usually get sightstone later too because of the cost.

This is not a guide teaching you how to play the game or how to support, this guide is just my thoughts on the new items and what to build as a support now.

I hope you have enjoyed the read and feedback I don't mind criticism at all and feedback is good.

I would love to hear all your thoughts to so please leave a message and I will have a good think about what you say.
