Champion Matchups

14.12.2012

Say goodbye to any Rengar who maxed W first.
My way to play Rengar was made completely useless while the lvl2-oneshot-toplane rengar still works fine.
I have no idea what riot was thinking but well.

This guide frozen now the not glasscannon rengar sucks balls now.

Thanks Riot!

Introduction

Hello, I am an EU-West ~1850 elo player. I do almost always play Jungle or Top in Soloq and ever since Rengar came out I was able to push up my Elo hard. Rengar is my main champion and I would say I know a lot about him and his matchups.

This is not a guide about how to rip faces with Black Cleaver or how to jungle Rengar.
This is a guide about a very tanky Lion that trades well, wins a lot of lanes, and helps his team with his tankyness and aggressive splitpushing.
I don't say that this is the only way to play Rengar and that the AD-Builds suck ass, but I like this kind of build the most, because you do a lot of damage to squishies while not taking any damage what will help to take out the enemy carries and let your carries do damage.

I hope you "like" my guide and that you will tell me your impressions about it in the comments!

Masteries

Rengar doesn't really profit from the utility tree, also going deeper into the Offense tree would give away that you are playing AP.
Also the later points of the defense tree are really good and make him very tanky in the lane and lategame.

You can trade in "Perseverance" for "Hardiness" or "Resistance" if you are scared of dieing early.

Runes

Marks:

For marks I take Magicpen because most of your opponents wont have a lot of magicresistance early on what makes it even more effective.

Glyphs:

Depending on the matchup I either take magicresistance per level, flat magicresistance or I go for cdr.
Against heavy AD I would always get the cdr because it helps you all game long and helps you sustain better.

Seals:

Against AP you can take the health per level or stick with the armor against autoattack-harrass or jungle pressure.
Against AD you should always get the Armor.

Quintessences:

In most matchups I use movementspeed to get into bushes faster.
Sometimes i take flat magicpen to do more damage if I feel like not needing the movement speed.

Summoner Spells

For summoner spells I take and

If you are against a very aggressive lane that you just want to survive against you can take or Barrier instead of .

Against you should always get to escape his ultimate.

All posibilities:

No.

No.

This might help against hard CC enemies but it takes away the pressure of ignite. Get Merc's instead!

This works OK in the laning phase and works well if a high burst jungler at ganks. It is great in teamfights to shut down the enemy AP/AD for some time. Get this if you think ignite wont do a lot for you in laning phase and the enemy team does not have somebody like

You can get this instead of ghost, it's sometimes better but it has a higher cooldown.

No.

No.

Yes!

This can work well and will be even better if you get . It does not really help in teamfights though and is countered hard by ignite.

Yes!

No.

If you plan on dieing a lot during keypoints of the game -> Best summoner spell in the game!

This is not a jungle guide.

Might work, and makes your lion bigger what looks great but its still a lot worse than ignite.

If you plan on splitpushing a lot this is a great summoner and you can pull off nice ganks/counterganks in the botlane with it.

Skills and Skill-Order

Passive: Unseen Predator

Explanation:

This is what makes Rengar a very funny champion. It puts a lot of pressure on your enemy in the lane and it works great as an escape and initiating tool.

Q: Savagery

Explanation:

How I play Rengar this skill doesn't provide a lot to you. Just spam it on creeps to get ferocity.
Though you are not going AD this skill helps pushing down towers fast.

Get this on level 3 and max it last.

W: Battle Roar

Explanation:

This is what makes you outtrade a lot of champions. Max this first, no matter what.
It helps you push waves very fast, it helps you a lot to not die to a gank.
It makes you very tanky in teamfights and makes your HP very much more effective.
Almost always use this when you have 5 Ferocity to sustain and do more damage!

Get this on level 2 and max it first!

E: Bola Strike

Explanation:

This is great for chasing down people and harrass in lane.
When you maxed this the cooldown will get pretty low.
It's very good to get your ferocity maxed in the lane fast.

Get this on level 1 and max it second.

R: Thrill of the Hunt

Explanation:

This is what makes Rengar awesome!
When you have this up, you are pretty much ungankable and when you use it you will see your enemies splitting up searching for you like idiots and then you can just jump on one of them to kill him or just run away.
If you try to make plays with this be sure to wait for your ferocity to max until you go in or you will end up leaped to an enemy and not doing any damage to him.

Get this at level 6 and skill it whenever you can!

Combos:

With 2/3 ferocity + out of the bush to your enemy or a creep and use to catch up. Then use twice and back off into your bush and wait for the next lasthit.
When you allready have 4 ferocity just don't use until you used your double-W.

When you are having a fight you cannot disengage try not to use both at once because you want to have the Armor+Magicresistance buff for as long as you can. Also do this when you are running away from a gank.

When you try to kill an enemy go in for a double- and disengage into the next bush (THE BUSH CAN'T BE WARDED BY YOUR ENEMY!) use your and run up to him while stacking ferocity. When it is maxed jump on him and + all the other skills you have ready. You can dive the enemy turret pretty easily because your makes you pretty much immune to the tower.

Item Builds

In General:

Rengar generally profits from pretty much everything but Mana and AttackSpeed/Crit.

But in my opinion CDR is the best you can get on him, though it's difficult to find good items without Mana/Attackspeed but with CDR.

Shurelias, Frozen Heart, Stinger - all make Rengar pay for stuff he doesn't want.

So the other 2 upgrades of Kindlegem are basically your only options but cdr-boots (but I really dont like them). Also they both work very well with Rengars skillset and with the cdr runes and masteries you get about 35% cdr once you finish Spirit Visage and have another kindlegem/Locket of the Iron Solari.

Against AD:

cloth-armor + health-potion5 or just start with boots-of-speed + health-potion3.

After your first back you should be able to afford kindlegem what makes you tankier and a lot stronger because of the cdr it provides.

Next you should finish your ninja-tabi get a or (if you are doing well in the lane) get a
Afterwards get a sunfire-cape to raise your tankiness and your DPS.
As soon as you have this you can often just stand and fight while sustaining with .

Against AP:

null-magic-mantle + health-potion2 or just start with boots-of-speed + health-potion3.

kindlegem + chain-vest/negatron-cloak

After your first back you should be able to afford kindlegem what makes you tankier and a lot stronger because of the cdr it provides. If you are having problems with burst in the lane you can rush a .

After you finish your spirit-visage you can start building armor with a sunfire-cape or if they have more AP on the map or you want more damage yourself get an abyssal-scepter

Situationally:

- Get this if you are doing good or it is a farmlane, it will pay for itself because you don't have to ever buy wards again. It's basically the new heart of gold but a lot better! Don't think this item is for supporters and sucks for toplane, it's great and will raise your vision by a lot.

Your Mid/Lategame Build should look like this:

mercurys-treads/ninja-tabi/sorcerers-shoes+spirit-visage+locket-of-the-iron-solari+sunfire-cape

If the game goes even longer or you got fed you can buy more damage because you are allready immune to most of your enemies abyssal-scepter and rylais-crystal-scepter work really well on him because of the magicpen/aoe-slow they give. (don't get abyssal if you allready have one on your team)

Alternatives for those are

Most of your enemies wont get that you are not playing AD until you build an AP item, use this to your advantage (I've seen a lot of people rush Ninja Tabi after I first blooded them what throws them even more behind, and what makes the Magicpen-Runes even stronger)

Early Game

Early game can be pretty hard for Rengar or pretty easy, that depends on the matchup.
You give your jungler a leash with 2-3 or if you are on the other side wait for a 4th and then run to lane (you can the jungle creeps on your way to gain some ferocity).
Now poke with your e when you can, and if its an easy matchup you can also jump on them and get 1-3 autos in.
Generally you just keep standing in your bush and jump in for a lasthit or for some harrass.

When you are lvl 2 you can already go in and do some nice damage and sustain up any damage you got earlier with .

Always spam your and onto creeps or if possible on your enemy to get some free damage in.
Once you got 4 ferocity jump onto/near him and .

Whenever your enemy trys to fight back, don't fight, but kite him to the next bush and use everything that gets off cooldown during that onto him. When you reached the bush you can jump onto the next creep and disengage fully, or if you got enough ferocity back allready you can also go in again.

This form of harrass will make you push hard onto your enemy and will lure the enemy jungler towards your lane pretty fast so be careful when going in.

Once you get lvl 6 you dont really need to be careful anymore, just do the same thing over and over and your opponent will drop hp constantly.

Now your opponent can do 2 things:

- Going back will make the creepwave hit his tower, since you push with your harrass, what denies him farm and exp (Good for you!)

- He stays and tries to farm under tower and waits for is jungler to help him out:
-- You can now dive him if he is low enough by disengaging after a harrass and walking into a bush that he has (!!) not warded (!!) -- will do the rest.
-- Or you wait for his jungler to come while you try to harrass him under his tower and try to kill him when he engages you with his jungler and then run away with or just fight the jungler if you have enough hp left and the midlane doesn't come.

Mid Game

Once you got the first tower by pushing constantly it will get riskier to push. On this point you can try to steal doublegolems and ward the enemy red or tell your team to group up for a tower or dragon.
You can also just keep on pushing since only or could really gank you when you have your ultimate up.
But no matter what, they will always try:
- If you are ahead and sure its only 2 of them try to fight as long as you can before disengaging with the ult (also check for oracles/pink wards in their inventory)
- If you know it will be a gank with more than 2 people just lure them as if you didnt know and fight them a bit before running with your ult. Your team can do dragon or get the bottom/middle turret or just some kills on the botlane for this.

You basically function as a lure to take pressure off of your teammates so they can get towers and dragons.

Late Game

Once you have farmed up a lot of hp and cdr your teamfight potential is very very high. It can be pretty hard to initiate but with a or ult on you after you in they will have to fokus you, or give up 1-2 of them while running.
Try to not fight in the middle lane, since there are no bushes, fights around baron and dragon are where you really shine, jumping towards safety, to finish a kill or into the enemy team.
If you still have your up once the fight has started that works great as a chasing reinitiating and disengaging-tool!

Team Fights

In team fights you can do two different things:

Either you peel for your carries or you go and dive for the enemy carries.

If you dive into them all by your own your damage will be too low to kill them, but you can take pressure off other divers/assassins. You should try to get a full combo off on one of the carries to ult and then go on the same guy again to finish him. If you really wanna play to dive into the enemy team you should get at least one AP item like or .

If you try to peel for your carries make sure to stay near them. Always have an eye on the enemy assassins and divers. Try to either kill them with all you got or just them and let your carries do the damage.
Try to always run into the next bush to wait for your cooldowns before going in again. You cannot peel or dive in if you have all your abilities on cooldown, your aa doesn't do anything.

Why should I play Rengar?

Rengar is (sometimes) a really mobile Champion with his and .
He is a lot of fun to play in the lane, since you basically harrass your opponent all the time.

Here is a pro and contra list about how I play Rengar:

Pro:

- Strong pusher
- Very very high sustain
- Strong harrass
- Good disengage
- Good engage
- Can escape ganks with ease (even before level 6)
- Very tanky and disruptive lategame
- Doesn't need help to win the top lane most of the time

Contra:

- Low 1v1 killing potential
- Less effective early game than the AD-Rengar
- Weaker midgame teamfight potential than the AD-Rengar
- The lane gets very snowbally against AP-Toplaners like
- Stealthdetection can hit him hard

Items in particular

Items you can build on Tanky-AP-Rengar and what they are good for:

Provides a lot of stats for your team, get this if you don't think that you will be able to do a lot in teamfights.

This item can be very costeffective if you jungle Rengar, but for this Rengar it doesnt help at all if you don't get at least 9 stacks on it fast.

More to come soon ...

Boot Enchantment

I don't really like the boot enchantments for any role except AD-Carry
But they can be usefull sometimes and do actually help a lot lategame.

- 475 Gold

The movementspeed is nice, but I'm not sure if it's worth the gold.
If you really just need to move that little bit faster get them, but I don't like them and 475 Gold could be used more whisely.

- 750 Gold

This is what I would recommend for a champion that tanky. If you are chasing or initiating you give your whole team a nice boost in their movement speed what helps the other tank/s to catch up, the ad carry to position himself etc...
I don't really know about the MS for the creeps but I guess it's not bad and helps you push a bit.

- 475 Gold

I don't think this is usefull at all, if you run Teleport+Ghost/Flash I guess it's profit is doubled, but there are better ways to spend your gold. Could be good for a splitpush-comp though.

- 650 Gold

This can work pretty well on Rengar but I don't think it will help you a lot. If you use this to chase somebody you will get farther away from your team what can get you killed in the end. It could be nice for chasing somebody in the laning phase but early game you have other items you should get.

- 475 Gold

Get this if you are defending your base with your last forces and you really have to hold on. If you got a Vayne+Nunu in your team and really want to get to that lategame but your enemies are hitting down your inhibs you can use this to defend better. If you end up in such a situation get those boots. Dont get them to get to your lane faster or something like that, its not worth the gold.

Matchups

I will add a lot of Matchups here over the time:

- Average

Lee Sin is not a huge problem toplane, if he maxes anything but w you can outtrade him pretty hard.
If he maxes w he can't do a lot of damage to you and you both just farm up until midgame.
The problem with Lee is that if you push on him you can get ganked and die to it because of Lee's stealth detection.

- Hard

Rumble is the only one who can really hit you hard.
His damage is insane and his cooldowns are just as low as yours.
Try just to outfarm him and call for ganks cause if you can get ahead of him it becomes an easy lane.
Don't die! If you give him first blood or some other advantage you will be stuck under your tower for a long time.

- Average

Vladimir is not a hard lane, unlike Rumble he can't outtrade you if you go in with a lot of ferocity. You can push on him early and use the fact that vladimir can't lasthit under tower and doesn't really help his jungler when you are getting ganked.

- Easy

Riven can't do anything to you. Her damage early on is too low to outtrade you, and her sustain until BT is pityful. Just spam everything you have all the time and she will be forced to go back early and that will give you a nice advantage in cs and exp.

- Average

You can outlane Jarvan most of the time but when he ultis on you with his jungler nearby while your flash is down, the chances of you surviving suck.
Anyways you can beat him in cs pretty easy and will be more usefull later in the game.

- Average

Irelia can be a hard matchup but you will be able to outtrade her and if you trade a lot she will get oom soon. Also she is a bad pusher and you can do a lot of damage to her tower early on.
What makes her OK against Rengar is the fact that she can run after you when your CD's are not ready and sustain up with Hiten Style and do some damage to you.

- Easy

Dont die to her early on, outtrade her, nothing more to say.
Pushing on her is very easy and her lategame sucks if she doesnt get fed.

- Easy

Trade till he is oom, spam everything on him and he will have to back soon.

- Hard

You can trade with him from level 3 till 5, before and after that he just beats you.
You can't disengage him because of the movementspeedbuff he gets when you are bleeding. If you stay near your tower he can't chase you, and so you can get good harrass of, but you can't really harrass without pushing.
Fear him from lvl 6 on, farm under your tower and try not to push. Sustain with your and call for ganks, darius is very vulnerable to ganks.
But be careful to not die when you are ganking him, use your ultimate before he can execute you.
Rush the usual items against AD and you can beat him lategame if you dont feed.

- Average

Early levels he will trade pretty well but he will get oom before you get low. Start Cloth+5 against him and he will go oom when you are still full HP. You can now just push on him forever and once you got your Kindlegem he wont do much to you while you push on him, making him waste all his mana to push back and farm under tower. (yorick can farm decent under his tower but he wont get every creep)

- Average

He can be pretty annoying early and his silence can screw you up sometimes but you can trade well with him and push him to his tower. His sustain is very low early game and you will get a cs advantage. You can kill him after level 6 and you will be more useful lategame.

- Easy

If the Warwick plays good he can sustain against your damage and if he gets a you will both just stand there and farm. Anyways you will be more usefull late. A little problem can be when he pairs with a high dps jungler like etc... he can ult on you and if you go low enough you cant stealth away with your ulti because of his E and they can burst you down. Be careful against junglers like that, but if they have a support type jungler you can just push on him and even fight when they gank.

- Easy

His damage earlygame is way to low to do be any threat to you. You can trade so well with him, it makes the matchup really easy. His lategame sucks if he doesn't get fed and he won't be able to play his role. Trade with him whenever you can. If he starts roaming push his tower and ask your team to do dragon with you.

- Average

A lane against shen will get a farmlane pretty fast. You trade pretty even for most of the game but his splitpushing is just better. Though you can't stop his ultimate with your 5-Ferocity- it is still nice to use it because he will be rooted whereever he lands and cannot go in there instantly.
If he doesn't take Teleport you will be able to get his tower very fast but he will put pressure on the whole map and you cannot splitpush against him.
You can get Teleport against him to denie his pressure.
Another thing to be aware of: if you are in your his taunt will reveal you and this will very often get you killed.

Final Comments

I hope my guide could help you raise some elo and have some fun with this champion.

I am sorry for all the spelling mistakes (especially missing ' and i instead of I), but English is not my main language and my English teacher prefers sleeping over teaching us. (actually true!)

Please comment on this guide with whatever you did/didn't like about it or any mistakes I made and give me some love by clicking "like"!

Good luck and have fun playing Rengar, the pridestalker!

next, please spend more time on this guide. You need far more information through out the whole guide.

on a personal note, you might want to rethink your build, as rengar is taking heavy nerfs here very soon, nerfs that are rendering AP rengar useless. just a heads up there bro.
