Champion Matchups

Introduction

Who is Veigar?


Veigar is a High burst AP caster. He excels in farming, assassinating the enemy APs, and following up initiates in team fights. Your Job as veigar is to 1. Farm well 2. Smoosh Squishy APs 3. Peel for your ADC or follow up initiates with his playpen.

When to pick Veigar.


While Veigar is a fun champion, he shouldn't be picked into everything. When I mid I see the role as a 1 1/2 v 1 1/2 lane. Jungler's impact mid on veigar a whole hell of a lot. Veigar is best picked against farm champions with little CC or burst casters who depend on skill shots.

Veigar pairs great with junglers who have a gap closer or hard CC. If your jungle has both, you already know mid is 90% won post 6. The same jungles that pair great with Veigar are also the best against him.

I suggest you do not pick Veigar into a game where the jungle has a hard CC and mid has high burst, as most of the time mids who have CC/burst can be avoided or zoned. With a jungler who can gap close/flash onto you into a hard CC or burst cycle can often lead to a quick death.

Masteries

Masteries are straight forward, either go a 21/0/9 or a 21/9/0 build depending on the match-up
  • 21/0/9 When you expect to farm and trade very little.
  • 21/9/0 When you expect to be harassed.

Runes

Very Standard AP caster runes. If you're fighting a AD mid, use armor runes instead of flat mp5 and either ditch MR glyphs for MR/Level or flat MP5.

Summoner Spells

1st Spell
Flash = must. Veigar has no gap closers or escapes and this spell is simply too good to not use.


2nd Spell
  • Get Ignite when you want to be aggressive in lane. He doesn't usually "need" ignite for kills. Even when people expect Veigar's burst, they seem to always underestimate the additional true damage from ignite.
  • Get Teleport if you either A. Don't expect to be able to kill your lane and want more map presence. TP is very versatile, I love it. One of my favorite things to do is shove my lane,and back when I have enough gold for a major damage item. Then gank through lane @ bot or top and TP to another lane for an additional kill with the jungler. (make sure to inform the jungler to be near the 2nd gank and ready for you.
  • Get Barrier if you expect your jungle to be passive and you get counter picked. A well timed barrier baited turret dive w/ Veigar's playpen can get a kill under towers.

W->E combo. AKA the pro Veigar's key to victory.

So if you're playing Veigar for the first time you probably think the Combo is E->W->Q but you're wrong. A good Veigar can cast Dark Matter THEN playpen to achieve full damage that is impossible to dodge from without tenacity.

It does take some getting used to, I suggest going into a bot game and smart casting both spells until you get the area down. If you mess your stun up, best case scenario all your spells miss -Q and you wasted a boatload of mana. Worst Case you get traded into unequally and lose mana, possibly die if they're on the outside of the playpen.

Skills

  • Baleful Strike [Q] : This spell is fantastic, it let's Veigar scale incredibly high. I get this first and stagger level it with Dark Matter [W]. Once you get to around 45-60 AP start poking the enemy champion with Baleful Strike. If your opponent is looking to harass you and you have to eat it, make sure to leave Q off CD so you can trade back.

  • Dark Matter [W] : This is Veigar's bread. butter, knife, and spork. While Q is great for poking and trading, Dark Matter is the tool that CHUNKS huge bars of life. This spell is great for shoving and champion kills. At around 5 You'll be looking to do 1 or 2 W->E combo's to get them ready for a kill or force them out of lane. It has very high base damage and a 1:1 AP ratio making it amazing with spell penetration.

  • Event Horizion [E] AKA "Playpen" : The First point of this skill is massive. It's a 1.5 second stun @ rank 1, which for anyone without merc treads, is a long enough time for a skilled Veigar to get in a W and Q + 2 auto attacks. Roughly 350-400 damage without being able to trade back into Veigar. Ouch. Each point you put into it after the first increases the stun by 0.25 seconds, nothing special and not needed for good Veigars.

  • Primordial Burst [R] : This spell is a little silly. Not only does it have a HUGE base damage (250/375/500). Not only does it have a HUGE coefficient (1.2!). It also scales with 80% of the target's AP. This and Dark Matter is why I love my 38.55 + 8% spell pen build. True damage on this and Dark Matter is epic.

Item Build

Veigar Scales Great with AP and Magic Penetration. Flat Magic Penetration will make for a stronger early through midgame which usually allows you to snowball and get caught up/ahead while shutting them down the enemy for late game.

Since most junglers are more passive and don't even start with boots nowadays, you don't need to match them to avoid ganks. Also with the buff to everyone's Movement Speed, you now have enough to avoid most skill shots. That's why I say Flask + Faerie Charm and 2 health pots is the best start. You can still go boots + 3x health pots if you want, but I find flask too good to delay it.

In a perfect world your first shop back would be at 1,910 gold. Allowing you to get haunting guise, boots 1, and a ward.
The next trip back will be to get Deathcap, or parts for death cap + sorc boots. (Straight Deathcap 3,200 > NLR + Sorc Boots 2,350 > Blasting wand + Sorc boots 1,610 > NLR 1,600 > Sorc Boots 750g > Blasting Wand 860g.)

Obviously sometimes you have to back just to stay alive, buy what you can but try to stay on track with items.

DFG is a great AP+CDR Item + an amazing on use. With near true damage it makes your spells make the enemies simply vanish.

Void Staff is simply a must late game eventually when people buy MR in order to have you 5 shot them instead of 2.

Guardian Angel, Because GA OP 6th item.

Situational items

Zhonya's if you're being focused or having to initate. Abyssal if they have AP AOE dmg you can't avoid. And of course, Lich Bane if you're 2 items ahead of everyone.

For the 5th and 6th slot needed for super late game, sell flask then guise.

Early, Mid, and Late Game

Early

1-3 Farm as best you can and don't die.
4-5 Start trying to land W->E combo's and chunk your opponet down, either get him ready for a kill at 6 or force him out of lane and get levels above him. Make sure to trade with Q while E is on cooldown!
6 If you didn't get him ready for a kill poke with Q until ~ 40-50% and R him. This will force him out of lane for fear of a flash E->Q+ignite. KEEP FARMING!
Mid

7-15
Use your dominance in mid to land more kills, zone the enemy player, or shove him to his turret and roam. Mid game team-fights should be starting soon, your job in them is to nuke 1 person. Don't waste cooldowns on someone you can't finish.
16+ Late Game


Use your playpen well with a good initiate and get ready to smoosh any high priority targets.
