Introduction

Sup guys, I'm Soapybubblez i play top lane on EUWEST however have started a smurf on NA which is only Cho'gath. Think of me as the Cho'gath invertedcomposer. This guide shall teach you how to play Cho'gath to a high standard whilst also helping you with the tricks of the trade of Cho'Gath.

WHY CHOGATH SOAPY?

Well Jimmy, Cho'gath offers a wide range of CC whilst also offering AP damage and quite possibly the most tankyness out of any champ because of his ult.

WELL SHUCKS SOAPY, HOW DO I PLAY CHO'GATH?

It's simple Jimmy, all you need is the 5 D's of Cho'gath: DEFENSE, DURABILITY, DAMAGE, DIVING and DEFENSE.


Masteries

Basically 4 masteries are viable

Tanky with some damage:

Runes

For runes you will want to keep the recommended however they are flexible to your play style.


Reds: Magic Pen or nothing. So nice on cho. Makes your spells kick people's ass's, really useful for an bruiser who is rushing merc treads against you.

Yellows: Armor, Its OP vs Brusiers. However you can go any health yellows to combat well against mages such as <--- your arch nemesis.

Blues: Flat MR, some people go MR per lvl, i never have and never will. You wanna win the game early on then use these.

Quints: Flat AP, TONS OF DAMAGE also the missing AP needed to use your Magic Pen Reds.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:


Flash is a great spell on Cho'Gath it offers a lot of flexibility with its use e.g Flash Q to initiate or obviously to get away.


Instead of Flash it kinda sucks, Cho has to stop for a split second before any ability he uses which makes chasing with ghost almost useless. However is good to re-inact the Great Escape from ganks.


Ignite allows Cho to snowball early game, often i find myself in the position of pushing towards the turret because of and ignite allows me to tower dive as long as i land the Wombo combo. Also useful for damage in between Cho's long cd's.


Teleport is another great spell on Cho, offers a scary presence on the map and obviously a chance to assist or even get kills on other lanes, also allows early roam as long as you TP back to top when your opponent pushes.

Skills

Because most of you aren't fucking retarded you know what his skills do at this point. This section is going to be on facts about his skills.

Passive: Carnivore

Explanation:

Sustain = GG



Q: Rupture

Explanation:


This ability has many useful functions, it can reveal areas, is one of the best AOE forms of cc in League of Legends the damage is pretty good the fact that it triggers after a short delay makes it so you can lead it to where they will run. Rupture will prevent any bruisers top with a gap closer by knocking them up when they get close. Remember to use this ability on the carry's in the team fights because it will completely shut them down.


W: Feral Scream

Explanation:

This ability is a really simple to hit form of CC it is a large cone in front of Cho'Gath which silences and gets wider and longer as Cho'Gath builds more stacks, not only this but even if the opponent runs out of feral scream just before it hits they will still be hit by it, making its range bigger than one would assume. Shhhh about it. I don't want it hot fixed!



E: Vorpal Spikes

Explanation:

Makes your auto attacks hit hard. This ability will let Cho win auto attack trades early on. Helps you last hit and farm much easier. But always turn off when trying to freeze the lane or getting pesky tower CS.


R: Feast

Explanation:

OMNONMNONMNONMNOMNONMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM

(remember you can always use this on objectives such as dragon and baron. 1000 damage to minions at level 6 means no smite can beat you until smite is equally as powerful!)

Many people are confused at when to use this ult because they feel as if they use it on a minion they will need it in the next min, dw about using it. Normally i get an early kill using feast with ignite and from there on unless the top is pushing really hard and is an easy kill i use it on minions. THE MORE STACKS THE STRONGER YOU ARE. 6 stacks is BETTER than using your ult on someone. AFTER 6 STACKS
omnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNONMONNMONMNOMNOMNMON time.

An Amazing Tip

Cho'Gath is so big at 6 stacks, especially with the newest legendary skin, that you can engage a fight and if you stand near your adc, their adc will be frantically trying to kill on the adc but all they will do is click on you. Cho'Gath is literally a shield for your whole team.

Skill Order and why max W

Use your for level 1 fights other wise you can start

Why max W?

Firstly, maxing Q does not really bring much to the plate, It will offer some decent damage, good cdr but as known Q is sometimes very hard to hit. Also if you think maxing Q is usefull for teamfights, team fights don't usually break out until at least level 9 where as Cho maxing W you will already have two points in Q.

Secondly, maxing E would not be viable at all. It would make your lane push too fast, if your opponent knows what he is doing he will just freeze and you will not be able to stop it without risking death. Also E is not a good source of dmg to hit it you have to be infront of minions or atleast in mele range and since you are usually going to be against bruisers top, they can just trade with you and win easily.

Finally, maxing W offers a huge amount of damage and a long silence. During the laning phase, you can W over minions for easy poke. Not to mention if you maxed any other skill there is no way that you can win a trade as well as you can with W. To put it simply. W is the way forward.

Early Game

Early game cho is one of the best champs in the game, he has 2 forms of CC at level 2 which makes you hard to gank and hard to trade with. Use the combo's mentioned in 'How to win the lane' and there is no way you can lose early.

Mid Game

This is where some champs begin to thrive against cho. The majority of champs are predominantly mid game thrivers. Be careful at this stage, but if you have done well early game you should be items ahead once you reach mid and you will have no problems.

Late Game

Pretty simple, Cho is a hyper carry and becomes a god in the late game. Just group up with your team at this stage and force team fights against the other team. which with your cc and hopefully your tankyness you will carry.

Team Fights

In team fights cho has two simple roles when played as a tank. CC and soak damage. You can start the fight with a however make sure you tell your team you are going to do this, or just land a good and engage. on the carry and get in his face, soak his damage and you win. If they get a good engage such as a bandage toss you can amumu before he can ult or just silence their AP carry cutting a ton of damage and Q their AD. GG!

For straight AP cho, you will still be tanky but your role is probably off tank. Wait for an engage and just shit all over their carry with a combo and then OMNOMONMONMNOMNONOM the AD is dead gg (:

How to win the lane

You have 1 choice in lane. Push and win by sustain. Keep on combo'ing with easiest combo to hit or the combo which denies a flash (use when team ganks)

What shall i remember?

Well cho'gath is one of the champs which people always try to bully in lane because he appears weak early game. This allows you to force fights which with the help of your jungler or just your sheer MANLYNESS you will win.

How do i escape ganks?

Buy a ward. xD

Seriously.

If this fails when their jungler jumps on you rupture the ground just behind yourself or underneath yourself and run. ON CHO GATH NEVER UNLESS THEY FLASH FOR YOU, OR YOU ARE SURE YOU WOULD HAVE DIED IF YOU DIDNT

Item Builds

This section is where i go in to depth about each of the items picked above and some other viable picks.

Great item. It offers the essentials; MR, AP and because it reduces enemy MR it also offers magic pen which works for your whole team. You do not have to pick up this item if your mid lane already has.

Also another great item which offers good stats in both MR and Armor not to mention gives your whole team these bonuses also, however this item is usually brought by either your support or jungle but if no body has it feel free to pick this item up, it can literally alter a team fight.

This is a great item for all tanky ap's you will often see champs such as ryze and ahri pick this item up. It works really well and gives you health mixed with high AP and a strong 35% slow which procs off of your skills.

Many cho's pick this item up but i really dont see its full potential. It offers great source of mana and ap which scales as the game goes on, which is similar to cho because he also scales as the game grows longer but this item doesn't offer large amounts of AP or tankyness and the mana problems are easily covered by a frozen heart.

Obviously a great pick, High armor, great health and a slow. With this item cho can dive with ease, if the adc is fed this item is THE ITEM for you. You dive their ADC soak up his damage slow him and eat him.

Raba's is good on cho because it offers a retarded amount of AP, if you feel like playing cho mid then pick up this item because your along with could potentially 1 shot somebody, I only ever take this item if we are lacking AP and my tankyness is unneeded.

MOBIS!! run run run run run !!!! an amazing pick on cho if you have forced top tower down early and you want to roam or if you are mid cho mobis allow you to run bot lane and top so fast the lanes cannot prepare themselves for the rape which will insue

Good cdr however your Frozen heart already offers good CDR

Good early vs bruisers however i always end up selling to get mercs or mobis

Amazing for tenacity and some MR pick these up against AP's

Bread and Butter of cho'gath. I feel like this item is a must have on cho because it offers a awesome amount of mana, great CDR for all of cho's long cd's and of course some armor in my opinion its a must have.

Only good as a last item on cho and only really useful if your not so tanky that you can withstand everybody focusing you in a team fight. I don't usually pick this up because cho can only die if their whole team is focusing him. (secures your stacks)

People think this item is op because of your however it actually sucks dick. Dont take this item on cho, you already have a slow from raba's or rylais.

Wards and health. Always useful!

You can take this item because it offers health and small CDR along with its amazing speed passive however usually your support will take this item and if they aren't completely retarded they will use it at the correct times. Feel free to take if support has not got it.

You can take this if you are mid and building full AP

Another great pick but i really don't see its usefulness. Great you get MR and health and cdr but if im honest i would rather have the passive from shur's or the passive from Abysals than this because cho wont be getting much cs to get his hp back during a team fight. Simple. Pick this up sometimes though and see how you like it, some players believe this item is a must have.

MEH, armor and a lil damage when you are in the middle of everyone. Not useful because everyone will try kite you and if you do end up in the middle of everyone the damage from this will be unnoticable.

HP is always great you can go this item on Cho, also secures stacks.

Good AP and some armor but you wont need to Zonya's anything because you are suppose to be soaking in all the damage rather than avoiding it.

I'd rather have a bowl of Abyssals scepter but you can go this if your mid has got Abyssals

Match ups

Sigh these are cho's matchups more will be added after i face each champ at least 5 times each.



So easy to beat, Harrass non stop with don't forget you can rupture the ground beneath you before or during his jump. Keep farming against Jax and harass out of lane. BEWARE Jax is an easy lane to gank with because he has a gap close and stun. Always ward bush and river. If jax becomes strong because you are being camped or Jax is getting kills by roaming, don't fight him, unless you are equally as strong. him and fucking run.



Finally a strong counter to yorick. You can last hit his ghosts for extra sustain, keep farming it out and at level 6 you should be able to kill him with a combo and



Pretty simple to beat, harass this bitch non stop and eat her at level 6, she is really squishy and can be nomnom'd easily. Should always ward against her because she is a easy lane to gank for because of her stun and gap closer. Also she can go spider and jump your combo, so always use so she cannot do this.



Sigh. Pretty hard match up. Eve just goes to lane pushed with her spikes into turret whilst also harrasing you and then roams. Not only this but it is very hard to hit her with because of her insane movement speed. To beat eve when she went SS or MIA i would push as fast as i could into the tower to force her to lose cs and xp, after wards i would roam to a random lane and sometimes she would be there and sometimes she wasn't. I placed 2 vision wards and i was all over eve, you can even buy to roam equally as well as her. Eventually she got annoyed and stayed on lane pushing, i would just freeze the lane and try harass and she could not do anything. By level 25 mins, her reign of early/mid game was over and we won every teamfight.



Easy matchup. He can blind you but he cannot blind against a teemo you want to farm until level 6 because he will be able to kite you around all day. Quickly pick up second tier boots and once level 6 force a fight. If you hit a this teemo will find himself being eaten by if the teemo tries to kite you through shrooms you can just wait for your cd's land another combo and hopefully get to him even with the mushroom slow.



Can go either way. Warwick's Q scales with % of max HP so you will often find yourself being hit really hard by Warwick, You both have amazing sustain on lane and decent CC. I advise pokeing at WW and if he decides to fight just him and walk away. You can only fight a warwick once you pass level 6 and you can on him.



In my opinion your worst match up. Vlad can just pool your combo's all day long. You will want to farm against vlad and only fight when he uses his pool offensively. Along with vlads pool his poke is just as good as yours. To poke him just also you can Vlad when he is full Hp in hope that he pools and wastes 20% of his hp, But he will get his health back anyway due to his equally as good sustain.



Can go either way. If darius rushes an MR item such as hex drinker then he will win the lane. Early game just poke him and farm, don't try to fight him. He will dunk you if you try to exchange at level 6 and usually his true damage is higher than your even if you did survive the dunk the bleed will finish you. Don't fight a darius 1v1



Congratulations you win. Quite often i will swap with my mid lane if kata is picked. You have two ways to stop her ult. You will not land many combo's due to shunpo so just farm it out and follow her when she roams, buy mobi's if it helps you follow. if she trys to trade combo her when she ults and feast all over her pretty little face. Have fun with this match up and imagine a fat man behind his computer ripping his hair out as you faceroll him.



Requires high level of skill. You must combo a Riven after he uses his combo otherwise he can combo out of your combo (comboseption) By this i mean you wont hit a combo on riven because he can jump out of your combos. To poke him use and just farm it out. You can fight riven at any time as long as you land your combo. P.S if riven uses her ult and you are both dieing you can to stop her bunkae and feast to win the trade and hopefully land a kill.




In between average and difficult. For the most part morde will win trades because of his high MR. You both have skills with cone range, yours is . He will win poke with this but if you land a Q W combo or even a W Q combo then you will win. The best advice i have for this matchup is to out farm morde and fight when you have better items.

If you're behind.

If you are behind as cho never give in. A lot of games i end up going 0/2 by 10 mins because of ganks. You must do 2 things when behind.

1. Farm like a champ.

2. Attend every single team fight.

After doing these two things i found myself carrying team fights with my cc and stealing a bunch of kills with Got items and ended up being the biggest problem for the other team.

Never lose faith with cho'gath. His cc and insane tankyness will carry the game eventually.

Why Cho'Gath is so fun!

This final section is why i find Cho'gath so fun to play with and my background.

I loved playing Cho'Gath on Europe West League of Legends that i decided to make a smurf on north american League of Legends. I quickly got bored and a friend lent me his old north american account. I decided that this smurf would be Cho'Gath only because Cho'Gath is really fun to play, he wins almost every single match up including the lord of the top lane Yorick, Cho'Gath can get back into the game from even the worst of circumstances. I have been 0/8 before and came back in the teamfights, Cho'Gath counters ganks really well also. As mentioned in a section above Cho'gath can rupture the ganker and walk away, however i have also found times where my 6 stacks makes my hit box so big that an amumu bandage toss could be miles off of hitting me and still hit me, haha. Finally the main reason that i love Cho'Gath and why he is so f'in fun to play is that Cho'Gath is the largest champ in lol making his animations hilarious to look at and watch, not to mention the newest Cho'Gath skin with boom boxes on his shoulders, which he dances to! always makes me laugh.
