Champion Matchups

An Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my Ryze guide!
Ryze has been my main champion for a long time, so I figured it was about time to share my thoughts on how to maximize his potential. This is my first guide, so be gentle :-)

About the author: My Summoner name is Gollum, I'm from Denmark and I play on EU-NE.

I played alot of Ryze in season 2, but due to recent changes jungling has become the least wanted role, so usually I end up doing it - And when I Duo Q I usually play ADC. But I do still play Ryze occasionally.

Why pick Ryze?

When I first started playing Ryze I found it to be very frustrating, due to his short ranged abilities. However, when I really learned how to build him and get a hang on his playstyle, I actually enjoyed playing him in basically every match-up.

There are different ways to set your masteries and runes in order to win almost every match-up, but more on this later :-)

Pros:
  • Hyper mid -and lategame Carry
  • Tanky with high DPS
  • Very mobile (strong for teamfights, ganks and preventing ganks)
  • Large Mana pool
  • Fairly easy to pick up

Cons:
  • Tough laning-phase vs champions with strong early game pressure
  • Item dependent
  • Blue Buff dependent (more or less)
  • Short-ranged abilities. This is why you have to build Ryze tanky

Runes

After spending ~17k IP on my previous Mana-based Ryze Rune Page, I really wanted to keep using it, even after his rework. But eventually I had to realize, this was simply not the best way to set up his Rune Page anymore.

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: Enemy mid will have some MR. Best option for all AP mid.
Greater Seal of Scaling Health: Ryze is a short-range mage, this helps him to get tanky late-game.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist: You'll be facing AP mid (most often).
Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed: This is very efficient to catch up and avoid ganks.

Alternatives: Mana-Based: mPen Marks - Mana/lvl Seals - Mana Glyphs - MS Quints.
This gives you some extra mana throughout the game. But it's really only efficient for some extra early Mana, to spam a few additional abilities, due to the nerf to his Mana scaling.

Versus AD: mPen Marks - Armor Seals - MR/lvl Glyphs - MS Quints.
If you face AD mid you probably want some extra Armor. Replace flat MR Glyphs with scaling MR.

LOOK AT MY BALLS: mPen Marks - HP/lvl Seals - AP/lvl Glyphs - MS Quints.
I guess you could consider this setup, if you're versus or someone else, who you're most likely to crush from lvl 1 or 2. But consider if it's really worth giving up the MR.

Masteries

Basically 9/11/10 gives you everything you need. I'll go into detail for each tree:

Offense Tree: So is it really worth giving up 2% CDR for 2 points in Butcher?
Ryze is actually pretty bad at last-hitting with basic attacks. 2 points in Butcher helps him last-hit better.
You'll build plenty of CDR-items + you have your passive. However, CDR is not as important early game, since you can't spam your abilities whenever they're up anyway. You need items first!

Defensive Tree: Extra HP to make him more tanky, MR or Armor depending on your matchup and reduced damage from champions.
I also take a point in Tough Skin, since you should be attacking your opponent with your ranged basic attacks, which will draw minion aggro onto you.

Utility Tree: Mana, Mana Regen and Movement Speed. All 3 things are very awesome on Ryze. Obviously, 21 points in Utility would be nice - but I don't think it's worth giving up the early tankiness from the Defensive Tree.
I take Runic Affinity since an increased duration of Blue Buff for 20% is pretty sweet.

Alternatives: I have 2 other Mastery Pages for Ryze, which I rarely use, but can be efficient.

9/0/21:
I use this if I feel like I can give up the 11 points in Defense. But this is rarely the case. We have to face it - Ryze just has a weak early game. So 11 points in Defense really helps him through this difficult part of the game.

9/21/0:
If you're facing an opponent you're struggling against, this can be efficient. But beware, you're giving up some Mana & Mana-Regen. Sometimes, if I have a premade jungler and we agree on me getting first Blue Buff, then I go for these Masteries.

Summoner Spells

As you probably know by now - Mobility is key on Ryze.
This is great for catching up, and getting into good position in team fights.

I go for this if I assume high kill potential on mid, or if I predict my opponent to build alot of spellvamp like or if they naturally have high sustain like .

I sometimes go for this if I'm vs Twisted Fate to counter gank, or if I play as a ranked 5s team to coordinate ganks with teleport.

Nah, you don't need this.
Can be viable if you have the Zombie Ryze skin - otherwise, why?
First time jungling Ryze, will most likely be your last.
Attack speed? Lol. Extra AP is not worth taking a SS slot on Ryze.
Could work if enemy team has alot of CC or if you face mid.
Decent early game, but gives you roughly 2-3% of your total mana late game. No!
Leave the stalking to Pedobear or your support.
Someone else on your team should definately take this. Only if absolutely necessary.

Skills & Combos

Skills: Passive: Arcane Mastery
Ryze's passive is broken. It's basically what makes Ryze as strong as he is, since he's able to spam all of his abilities one by one, while the cooldowns are getting down to 0, making him ready for another round of spamming abilities.

Q: Overload
This ability is Ryze's main source of damage - and on top of that it passively gives you CDR (up to 10% at rank 5).
Early game you should use it to harrass and, if necessary, to farm. After you start building up a serious mana pool, you should just use this skill as often as possible - to harass and to farm.

W: Rune Prison
Rune Prison is probably one of the best roots in the game. It's great for setting up a gank with your jungler and for invading.
While in lane, his W is good for setting up for his other abilities in a trade. However, the Mana cost of this is fairly high, so I wouldn't use this too frequently in lane, unless you have Blue Buff.

E: Spell Flux
I sometimes consider maxing this second, since it has great damage, especially for team fights. But as long as you're primarily facing single-targets, 1 point in this is enough. It takes off some of your opponents MR, to maximize the damage output of your other abilities.
When the 5v5 fights start happening, you should begin maxing this.

R: Desperate Power
By the time you have your ultimate you should go buy, get a Blue Buff and if you were struggling in lane before - things will be very much different now. For laning his ultimate is great for:
  • Pushing the lane back (To prevent you from farming under turret, while your opponent roams)
  • Sustain in lane, with the Spellvamp it provides
  • The Movement Speed boost is good for picking up kills and to prevent ganks
On top of that, his ultimate makes his abilities do AOE damage, which is great for team fights.

Skill Order & Combos: > > >

This way you can maximize your damage output - but as I said earlier: If you start having 5v5 team fights, you want to start leveling up your E earlier. If you invade the enemy jungle, start with W.
Your Q is your main damage output and you should consider when to use your W and E, before getting your Blue Buff, due to their fairly high (and increasing) Mana cost.

But when you do get your Blue Buff and you're able to spam those abilities, there are a few great combos to make use of. For trading in lane, my favorite combo is:
Q-E-W-Q
You hit them with your Q, wreck their MR with E, snare them with W, setting up for a final Q.
Depending on your CD's you might want to wait roughly 0.5 seconds, before the final W-Q to make sure your Q is off Cooldown. This way you're able to get out of the trade, with less risk of taking too much damage.
Q-W-E-Q <- This way you don't maximize the effect of your E, so try using the above mentioned combo instead.

While your W is an instant root, your Q has a 1400 projectile speed. This means, you can cast your Q THEN activate your ultimate and still get the effect off the ultimate on your Q.
Q-R-E-W-Q
You can use this combo for trading in lane, or simply pushing the lane.
Don't be afraid to use your ultimate often, due to its short fairly short cooldown.

Item Builds

Starting Items: OR
With the nerf to , starting is very viable.
It depends on your match-up though. Basically, if your opponent is skillshot-based, you probably want to start , since you want to dodge those skillshots. I'll be more specific on this, at the match-up section.

Early Game:
Whether to get or first, depends on how well you're doing in lane.
If you can, you should really get first, since you want to stack it, early. But if you're struggling, starting off with a is definately not a bad choice. After you have both, you should get immediately.

Core-Items: OR
From here, everything depends. For example, if you're versus and has to deal with alot of burst, you probably want to get a quick - and if you're facing high AD damage from you might want to get .
On the other hand, if your lane is going well, just rush .
Do get fairly early though. It's by far the best Armor option for Ryze, with the additional Mana and CDR.

Situational:
Build into or ? They both give 20% Vamp, gives 10% CDR, so only build if running double AP comp.
If enemy team doesn't have that much MR, but lots of magic damage.
If enemy team is stacking MR.
Works great if enemy team is stacking HP.
Extra survivability - but most often, I find Spell Vamp more efficient.
Both good items for Armor, however should be enough most of the time.
With the buff to Ryze's AP ratios, you'll do insane damage at a short CD with this item.
I always build into AA, instead of for the extra AP.
If you're facing a team with strong CC.
Mobility is very important on Ryze. I literally go for this everytime.

Example Full Builds:
Defensive VS High AP dmg:
Defensive VS High AD dmg:
VS a Balanced Team-comp:

I rarely build more offensive than the "balanced build". It's simply because Ryze is short-ranged, and he needs to be tanky. However, if you like going ballsy, consider exchanging for since it's such an awesome item! :-)

Early Game

At the early stages of the game, you generally just want to farm, farm, farm. Depending on your match-up, you might find yourself farming under turret at times. But you do not want to practice last-hitting when you're playing ranked - team up with a friend, let him push you to tower and practice this in a custom game. At this stage, only use your Q to farm if absolutely necessary.

Early game is Ryze's weakest stage, but you should avoid pushing your lane, with no wards, and risk getting shut down.

Another important factor, is to know your enemies cooldowns. If they hit you with an ability, that means it will now be on cooldown - so give them a Q to the face (this is where the power of MS quints kicks in).
However, before you get blue, beware of not wasting too much mana on your W and E.
If you're pushed to tower and your jungler is coming to help, you still want enough Mana to Rune Prison.

Mid Game

At this stage, you have + Blue Buff and well on your way to getting the cores. Do not let your opponent push you to tower, so you can farm under turret, while he's off contributing to his team.
When your ult is up, use your Q-R-E-W-Q-combo and clear the wave. In that way, if your mid is roaming, you can either call for help mid, to take down their turret - or you can go help out the lanes being ganked.

The laning phase is over! Don't sit mid, just because Ryze has to get farm. Already at this stage Ryze starts to show his true potential, so use it! Ward both sides of your lane and when you see your opponent leaving for top or mid - follow him!
Unless ofcourse, you're sure enough that they will be fine and you can just take down mid-turret instead.
- You should not go for the turret-takedown, unless you have a jungler/top near to help. Most of the time, you should just rush to the lane getting ganked.

Ryze is great for ganking aswell. For example, if you see a potential kill bot-lane, you can just recall, walk through the lane, activate ghost and you will easily be able to catch up on them.

Late Game & Team Fights

This is where Ryze really shines, but with great power comes great responsibility!
At this stage teamfights will win or lose games and since you're one of the strongest on your team, you can determine the outcome of these.

Most of all, it's important that you stick to your team. Nothing is worse, than throwing a game, because you just had to get those 6 extra minions. It's not worth it! STICK TO YOUR TEAM!

When teamfighting, remember that you're pretty tanky, so you can afford to take some damage. If the enemy AD Carry is in a bad position, I usually go and try nuke him down first, but generally you want to stay close to your AD Carry and quickly take down the enemy bruiser trying to get in your Carry's face.

Always use the Q-R-E-W-Q-combo to shred their MR, and you'll see their HP bars drop from the AOE-damage, while you target high-priority champions.

Lane Matchups

Hard Matchups: Start since you want to dodge her skillshots. Buy early Magic Resistance to deal with her burst - consider going for an early and most importantly: don't let her harass you for free - If she hits you with her E, trade back or you'll simply loose the lane too hard.

Start since she doesn't have many skillshots. Annie and Ryze's laning is pretty simular. You have roughly the same range, but she will win most trade and stay away from her stun! You scale better into late-game, so being behind a few CS is okay.

Start to dodge his skillshots. Beware that his abilities outranges yours, but try and stay behind minions to avoid his stun, so that if he does hit you, you don't have to hesitate to trade back at him.

Possibly the best counter to Ryze. Start and try your best to dodge her poison. Get some early magic resistance, since there's not much you can do about her constant harass, due to her range. You'll get behind, but don't play risky to keep up. It's better to lose a few minions, than to get shut down completely by a fed cassio.

Start to dodge her ball. She can be pretty mean in lane, because she outranges you and her basic attacks hurt. If you straight-up fight her, never stand on her ball - if you can predict her ult, flash towards her before it hits and spam that shit at her.

Start to dodge his skillshots. He out-ranges you, so getting some early Magic Resistance will help you deal with his early harass. You scale better into lategame, so getting behind by a few CS is okay.

Start and just try your best to farm. This is a very very mean match-up, since he can harass you constantly and just heal up doing it. A lane-swap may be adviced.

Start to dodge his skillshots. I wouldn't recommend trying to exchange, but don't hesitate to flash out of his ultimate, if you do end up fighting him straight-up 1v1.

Start . This match-up is somewhat simular to Ziggs, since you generally want to try and avoid exchanges. works great vs Zyra, but remember that she excells at close-range fights, which you're kinda forced to as Ryze.

Medium Matchups: Start since you want to catch up on her, and give her a Q to the face. Don't be afraid to trade with her - however, don't get to close when she uses Twilight Shroud and buy a after she hits 6.

Start . Dodge her Q, by moving anti-clockwise. It's fairly hard for you to kill eachother, so focus on farming and don't let her roam freely! At level 3 you can start trading with her, play cautiously untill then.

Start . Pretty boring match-up. Farm, farm, farm.

Start to dodge his skillshots. Possibly early MR due to his high burst. Try and stay close to minions, to reduce his damage from body-slam + forcing him to push the lane, and in that case you can ask jungler for a gank.

Start . You don't see Heimer much, and I honestly havn't played this matchup often. Don't get into close fights, since you will suffer damage from turrets as well as his other abilities. Try and farm and ask jungler for a gank, since he's likely to push.

Start . Karthus' main goal is to farm. He can be pretty hard to kill, so the best thing to do, is probably to push the lane and farm enemy wraiths or gank other lanes.

Start . You both have a pretty weak lane, but be sure that you get a Q off on him everytime you get one in your face. Be sure to call MIA if he leaves lane, since Kassadin is a dangerous ganker.

Start . This is fairly easy if you play it right. I pick boots, because I want to hit her with Q everytime the opportunity presents itself. Just zone her early and if possible, ask jungler for a gank, to shut her down early. Katarina wants to snowball, so be sure to call MIA everytime she leaves the lane.

Start . Don't let her harass you, without you harassing back. Get early to deal with her burst and to call MIA everytime she leaves lane. Build defensively enough to be able to farm, since lategame you will be much scarier than her.

Start to dodge her skillshots. You want to close-up fight Lux, but it can be hard, as she outranges you. Try and stay behind minions, to avoid her snare. Possibly get some magic resistance and avoid getting blown-up when she hits 6.

Start . He's very decent at pushing lane, so getting a blue buff to farm better, will be very usefull. If you intend to fight Malzahar, consider getting .

Start since you want to catch up on him and hit him with Q. Mordekaiser HAS to be held down early or he'll get out of control. Harass him as much as you can early and ask jungler for a gank, since he lacks escape machanics. Ward your wraiths, since he will most likely push you to tower and farm your jungle - so a ward will possibly set up for a kill.

Start and run Seal of Armor. Don't let him harass you without you harassing back.

Start . The problem with this lane, is that Swain can spam his abilities more than Ryze. Play passively untill you get and then start trading with him.

Start to dodge her skills. Start trading at level 3, and maybe get some magic resist to deal with her burst.

Start and run Seal of Armor. Talon is a pretty good counter to most mids, but Ryze is actually decent at dealing with him. Building an early could be usefull, since you don't want to see him snowball.

Start . Screw this champ. Don't let him hit you with Q without trading back. Consider getting an early to deal with much of his damage from Q and shrooms.

Start . Remember to warn your team-mates when he hits 6. Sometimes I choose to countergank, when he ults. He can't beat you 1v1, so try forcing trades and ALWAYS call MIA when he leaves lane.

Start to dodge his skillshots. Don't let him harass you freely and consider getting MR for his burst. Ask jungler for an early gank, since he lacks escape machanics untill he gets Gravity Field.

Easy Matchups: Start since Ahri relies on her skillshots. Avoid her charm, by standing behind minions. She's a strong ganker after she hits 6, so be sure to call MIA when she leaves lane. If you can avoid her snowballing, you've practically won this matchup.

Start to dominate the lane - you want to hit him with Q and AA everytime he wants to CS. You can basically zone him at level 1.

Start to dodge his Q. Kennen relies on hitting his Q, so getting an early will put his changes of winning vs Ryze close to 0%.

Start . Just don't get hit by her snare, by standing behind minions and you should be able to trade with her just fine.

Start . Try to avoid building too much AP and instead build more Mana. Veigar will do less damage the less AP you have - and your abilities also scale off Mana. Punish him in lane - you will win the trades.
Don't overextend, since his Event Horizon compliments a jungler ganking very well.

Start since you wanna close the distance and hit him when Q whenever you can. You out-trade him, so punish him for his weak early game.

Final Comments

Generally Ryze works best as a counterpick, since he's easily shut down by a great deal of champions.
However, if played right, and with correct Runes/Masteries, I've found myself being able to deal with most of the champions I used to struggle against.

I have played quite a few games with Ryze, but I'm still learning and would love to get some feedback on this.
Also if you have to suggestions/requests for some things you would like to see covered, don't hesitate to leave a comment.

need more explanation for summoner spells. your skills chapter is not going to cut it. it is far to underdone for a proper skills chapter. please either create a full skills chapter, or put a greater amount of information into your skill descriptions.

game phase chapters are lacking a bit, but they don't need a drastic improvement, just a few more lines to beef them up, except for you late game. late game and team fights MUST be separate chapters, and each much have enough information to warrant being it's own chapter.
