With the announcement of a Master Yi revamp. I will not be updating this guide. Have fun while it last!


Hello all! Thank you for taking the time to view my guide. I'm always looking for new tips and tricks for AP Yi. If you have any, I'd love to hear them! Also, my guide isn't geared towards high elo play(since I'm not high elo) but more towards someone wanting to try out AP Yi mid for the first time. This guide will go into detail on how to use his abilities, when to use them, and where to use them. AP Yi mid is my favorite champion.

Yi is highly vulnerable when playing against champions with CC abilities. Meditate, his healing ability, relies on it not being interrupted. Unfortunately all forms of CC will cause the interruption to occur. From, fear, silence, stuns, and Knock-ups. But what is important is how and when you use any of your abilities while playing AP Yi.

Along with Yi's many flaws, there is a high upside. AP Yi spits out some insane damage, especially in team fights. He has great mobility to back up teammates in the jungle as well as other lanes. His ganking potential is also very good.

Cons

  • Vulnerable to CC abilities while trying to heal
  • Really only one source of damage, his Alpha Strike
  • He can't backup low health teammates in lane unless the enemy is low
  • He's not a team player
  • If Meditate is down, he is squishy and very vulnerable

Generally, you don't want to pick AP Yi unless you already know who the other team has picked. If the other team has (maybe) 2, (definitely) 3, of these champs, stay away from Yi




It is important to treat AP Yi as an AP ASSASSIN!

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

These are the ONLY two summoner spells you should consider. Nothing else should be chosen.



Very important during the lane phase for two reasons.

Number 1 You will eventually burst your opponent in mid lane down to a percentage of health that you feel comfortable with being able to use one last time to secure the kill, and...
Number 2 You will use this to your advantage when lane roaming (when your mid falls back to base or is killed), to surprise either the jungler or any of the other lanes.

Flash is also very important in team fighting as you want to surprise the opposing team by flashing in and using alpha strike. (explanation in Team Fight chapter)



Very important during all phases of the game. It is used to secure kills. Pre-level 6, use ignite on mid lane or when ganking any of the other lanes to secure a kill. Level 6 and above, make sure to only use it to secure a kill while using so all of your cooldowns are refreshed.

Masteries

Explanation of Masteries

Offensive (21)

  • Summoner's Wraith - You gain an extra 5 AP while ignite is on cooldown. This could help secure a kill. It seems too little of a boost, you can possibly go with an extra point in Havoc if you wish.
  • Sorcery - +4% Cooldown Reduction. Will allow you to cast your abilities faster.
  • Blast - +18 AP at level 18. You gain 1 AP per level. Just give you free AP to do more damage.
  • Arcane Knowledge - +8% Magic Penetration. An important mastery, gives a nice boost in magic penetration.
  • Havoc - Only 2 points in this. Gives +1.33% overall damage. You can give this 3 points and get rid of the point in Summoner's Wraith if you wish.
  • Mental Force - +6 AP. More AP at the start of the game.
  • Spellsword - Deals 5% of AP power in magic damage on each basic attack. Great for adding more damage to last hitting minions. Also can help late game to secure kills after using
  • Archmage - Increase your AP by 5%
  • Executioner - Increase damage dealt by 5% to targets below 50% health. This is a nice Mastery option for AP Yi, as he typically tries to assassinate enemy champions with health below 50%.

Defensive (0)

  • None - There is no need for any kind of defensive mastery on AP Yi. AP Yi relies on the use of , so any defensive mastery isn't going to make a difference.

Support (9)

  • Summoner's Insight - Reduces the time you are able to cast again by 15 seconds. Important. Yi needs flash whenever he can get it.
  • Improved Recall - Reduces the cast time of recall by 1 second. This could save your life!
  • Wanderer - Gives +2% movement speed when out of combat. Nice little boost for roaming lanes quicker or getting back to yours.
  • Mastermind - Reduces the cooldown of summoner spells by 10%. Nice addition to Summoner's Insight for flash. Also allows you to get ignite a little sooner.
  • Runic Affinity - Increases buff duration by 20%. Very important mastery. AP Yi needs blue. This allows you to keep it longer.

Runes

Runes!

I have tried multiple variations for AP Yi's Runes. This is the only one that you should use. If you do not have the correct amount of Runes and/or Masteries for Ap Yi, I suggest not playing him until you do.

This rune page is focused on early game AP power, rather than scaling AP power for late game(which is not recommended). The reason for this is so you gain an advantage against your mid lane opponent. You want to kill him first, don't you? It's a snowball after that.

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration - An important boost in Magic penetration for early game.
Greater Seal of Ability Power - Gives AP
Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power - Matches flat AP @ level 7
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power - Gives AP

At level 1, with a , masteries, and your runes, you will have 56 AP. At level 1. your will do 100 + (56) damage, and will heal you for 140 (+218.612) health over 5 seconds.

With everything together, this allows you more sustainability early game as well as allowing you to harass more for a chance to snowball early game.

Skill Order

Skill Order

Skill order is important. Max your alpha strike first as this is your main source of damage. Next max out your meditation as this is your main source of sustain. Lastly, max out your Wuju Style. Some guides I've seen suggest Wuju Style as the 4th skill point. I do not recommend this. It's pretty much useless, Id rather spend it on some more sustainability.

Skills

Passive: Double Strike
Master Yi strikes twice every 7th attack.


Explanation:
This is a nice passive to AD Master Yi...not so much for AP Yi. Although it does have it's benefits, it should be utilized two different ways.
  • Number 1 - while last hitting minions in mid, pay attention to when you see your passive icon pop up . Once the icon pops up, try and save it for when you want to secure a kill agaisnt your opponent. After using (if that doesn't kill them) you still have a double hit left in your arsenal.
  • Number 2 - Use it to clear the jungle faster. I.e you push your mid lane up, retreat back to either wolves or wraiths.




Q: Alpha Strike
Master Yi leaps across the battlefield striking up to 4 enemies, dealing 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 (+100% of ability power) magic damage to each enemy with a 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60% chance to deal 400 bonus magic damage to minions.

Cooldown 18/16/14/12/10
Cost 60/70/80/90/100 mana
Range 600

Explanation:
This is your main (and only) source of damage. The downside to this is that you are pretty much useless if this is on cooldown. So using this ability wisely is the key to your success (further explanation in the early-late-team fighting chapters). The best part about this ability is that it scales 1:1 AP; meaning, that if you have 138 AP and has 3 skill points, will do 200 + (138) for a total of 338 Damage. It's a nice amount of damage and will take chunks out of the opposing mid player, especially if they are squishy.





W: Meditate
Master Yi channels, restoring 140 / 280 / 420 / 560 / 700 (+165% of ability power) health over 5 seconds. While channeling, Master Yi gains 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 armor and magic resistance.

Cooldown 35 seconds
Cost 70/85/100/115/130 mana
Range 20


Explanation:
Meditate is AP Yi's most annoying skill for anyone on the opposing team. You use this ability to restore health rapidly, while having a nice increase in armor and magic resistance. This is also an ability that needs to be used wisely. Pay attention to whether the enemy has a CC ability to cancel your . (further explanation in the early-late-team fighting chapters)




E: Wuju Style
Passive: Increases physical damage by 15/20/25/30/35.

Active: Master Yi can activate this ability to double its effectiveness for 10 seconds, but this removes the passive bonus until Wuju Style becomes available again.

Cooldown 30 seconds
Cost 40 mana
Range 20

Explanation:
Wuju Style is pretty straight forward. It increases your damage per added skill point. Activating it will double the damage for the duration. Max this last. I don't put any skill points in it til level 13. Its uses are really only for clearing the jungle faster late game, using it during a team fight, and using to to finish off an enemy champion.





R: Highlander
Increases Master Yi's movement speed by 40% and Attack Speed by 40/60/80%, and he becomes immune to all slowing effects for 6/9/12seconds. Additionally, killing a champion refreshes all of Master Yi's cooldowns. (Assists reduce half of the base cooldown amount.)

Explanation:
Highlander is the most important ability that AP Yi's has. The reason for it being so important is that by killing a champion it refreshes all of Yi's cooldowns (assists reduce half). Max this out whenever possible. It's important to realize that if you do not have this ability during a team fight, you are almost useless. Whenever you know you are going to kill an enemy with one last , make sure to use just before initiating. Doing this allows all cooldowns to be refreshed just in case another enemy champion is lerking nearby. Also if you recently used , you will have it again to heal up if you are low. [/title]

First Trip Back:

The sheen is a good pick because it enables you to rush a Lich Bane. By going with the sheen route this will enable AP Yi to do some extra needed damage against enemy champions or minions/monsters. It won't give you much. but at this level your Alpha Strike will do most of the damage needed and the Sheen is an added bonus while you wait for enough money to buy a Lich Bane.

Early Game (How To Play AP Yi)

It is essential for AP Yi to have a strong early game, whether it is getting kills or farming.

  • Harassment
There are two main ways to harass with AP YI.
  • Option 1 - Last hit minions until there are 3 left, then use ON THE MINION CLOSEST TO YOU. Make sure the enemy champion is near the group of minions. Example images below.

  • Option 2 - Use The Fog of War to your advantage. AP Yi's will only target minions and champions that he can see. Wait for one or two minions to appear out of the FoW. Anticipate that the enemy champion is following closely behind them. Start to move forward and use as soon as the enemy appears on your screen. Example image below.

*Note 1 - Make sure when you push your lane that you revert back to farming your jungle, either wraiths or wolves. If you see an opportunity in other lanes to gank, take it. Also, always follow your mid!

*Note 2 - After you help your jungler get first blue. You need the rest! It gives great cooldown reduction on your abilities and allows you to spam that while losing little mana.

Mid To Late Game and Team Fights

At this point in the game, you should be fed.
  • Towers are destroyed.
  • You should be roaming lanes.
  • Focus on farming.
  • Pay attention to other lanes on your minimap.
  • Particularly notice enemy champions with low health.

Team Fights AP Yi


In team fights, this is where you truly should act as an AP ASSASSIN. As bad as it sounds, to utilize AP Yi most effectively; KS your team. Sit in a bush or somewhere away from the opposing team, wait for an enemy champion to be at a low enough percentage of health towards where you know will kill them. Once you feel good about it, activate and rush towards that enemy. in for an increase in suprise and use by targeting the champion DIRECTLY. This guarantees that your alpha strike hits that champion. Hopefully you get the kill, if not, use and whack him a few times to secure the kill. Once the enemy is dead. continue to use on the remaining champions, prooritizing the champions with the least amount of health. Pay attention to the amount of time you have left on . If your ult is done, use it again before you kill another champion so everything is refreshed once more. Example Images Below.

I leave Yorick with low HP, but I don't kill him, So I used ignite on him to secure the kill. While waiting for the kill to be secured, I used Meditate to guard myself and wait.

Other Techniques

Flash and


AP Yi can use flash to his advantage by not only flashing out of a sticky situation by flashing in to a kill.

If you are successful in bursting down your opponent and don't have the opportunity to to secure the kill (because is on cooldown or they some how retreated back to their tower to recall back to their base). If you have , use it, once you are close to their tower and see them recalling back to base, use to get in close. Then use to kill them. If you don't kill them, use to finish them off.

*Note it also help to have for your next attack for a double whack of damage. Example images below.

  • Strategy - Follow the normal guide. Push him up. You should be able to farm more than him. Use his turrets to your advantage. Sometimes a Heimerdinger player will place turrets behind him to be able to retreat. As he is falling back use on the one closet to you and chain attack to him. Once you get a , you should be able to use on his turrets and kill them in one use.
  • Watch Out! - The only thing to watch out for with Heimerdinger is his , If it hits you directly, it will interrupt your .

  • Strategy - To EZ. AP Yi can dodge all over her abilities with , so use this to your advantage. Anticipate it when she moves closer to you. Just use the tactics in this guide to harass her. Just like any other player, push the lane then farm the jungle.
  • Watch Out! - Cassiopeia's can be pretty devastating, so as AP Yi, you should be aware of it at all times. Avoid using when low HP; if you have no other choice, make sure you are facing away from her as it wont cancel (not 100% on this, someone please confirm)

  • Strategy - Any mid squishy with no CC ability is going to be a cake walk for AP Yi. Just use the tactics explained in the previous chapters to attack and push back. I feel like putting as much pressure on her as possible, so she doesn't have the opportunity to gank other lanes; especially bottom lane. Always keep and eye on her and call MIAS.
  • Watch Out! - There really isn't anything to watch out for. The only thing would be to use when she and you're golden. I would typically focus her more in teamfights over their AD carry because of her AOE ult.


Easy

  • Strategy - Ahri is a fairly simple champion to lane against (as you can see in my tutorial screenshots). Her abilities are skillshot based and are easy to anticipate and dodge. Just like any other easy opponent, focus on harassing her as much as possible. Push her lane, then fall back to your jungle; and gank top or bottom when possible. I typically wait for her to use her and miss me, then go in for a directly on her. She wont be able to burst you and then you can just reheal the damage with
  • Watch Out! - There really isn't anything to watch out for other than keeping your distance while using . She can cancel it with her

Very nice guide! A few questions- why do you list gunblade as an OK option? It doesn't seem that great...

Second, have you done the math on deathfire vs. deathcap as 2nd vs. 3rd item, or is that merely your preference?

Third, could the new nashor's tooth be considered as an option for 5-6th item if steamrolling? It seems like it'd add to your DPS and tower pushing significantly

@Compostoru - You should make a guide, it would be nice to see something different on AP Yi. I like your suggestions and I think I'll give them a try. Thanks man!

You only need 1 point in meditate early. Max q and e. E gives you a lot of ad so your auto-attacks don't tickle enemies. Always auto minions till they are 3 left. Then use Q and hit the champion 100% thru them. Maxing W with no mana regen on runes will only deplete your mana pool and you will be useless when a gank comes and you can't even hit R to run.

Cocnclusion: All you need on AP YI is cdr, some mana regen and ap. Your role in game is to push turrets (6 seconds Q clears waves in 1 sec) and Lich Bane destroys towers very quick. Your role in teamfight is to clean up. Hit your ult when someone is low, q him, kill him to get the reset and continue on the next low target.

I always go CDR boots, Morello, Lich Bane, Death Cap and Malady. I will probably make a guide myself about this :)

just change 1 thing so it will be at the top of the yi guides otherwise this guide wont be seen anymore it is getting hard for me to find it now so had to make bookmark and again love the guide (i am the who said about goin bot lol ) have a good day and MAKE MORE GUIDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@TomHaze - Ya man Atenes is nice, but I usually go for an item with more damage output, only because I usually get every blue buff.

This is really good. I am an ap yi main around 1900 (i peaked at 2.1k though) and think that you pretty much are doing everything right (=



I am planning on making a guide too! I think it might be a bit redundant since yours is so good (=



I know this sounds greedy, but your pictures for how to utilize Q are incredibly well done. Would you mind if I used them in my guide, and made a big shout out to you?

I think athenes is a must have ! I usually build it right after rabadons because you usually are oom at the end of every teamfight and you really need the mana if you want that penta :D
