Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hi, I'm Perfect Riven NA. I'm not perfect of course, but I fell in love with Riven when I realised how much she fit my play style.
I am not the best player, but I've been a Riven main for a while (hence the name change) and I just want to show you my views on her.
I started to play well with Riven around the end of Season 2. I improved as a player and I became a lot better mechanical wise.

Riven is often very strong when fed. She requires for you to be able to farm well, and hit your combo's well. If you mess up a combo, you will definitely lose the trade. She has a great early game, mid and even late. She drops off if she is completely useless.
If she is denied farm, then it will become a very difficult lane. She is really item dependent, so try to get kills when you see one instead of farming.

Pros:
- Deals a lot of damage
- Mobile
- AD shield
- Wave clears

Cons:
- Squishy
- If CC'ed hard, can be focused down.
- Has to be near someone to do damage, possibility of being bursted down.

Pros outweigh the Cons, although this isn't to say Riven is the best.
Riven definitely has some flaws, and then there are areas in which she can excel in.

Item Builds

First trip back, if I'm forced back and have 1100 gold.

I pick up .

If I'm really fed, I pick up a OR .

If I'm losing to an AP I pick up a . Losing to an AD: .

Once I'm finished laning, I want to aim for a as it gives you a tremendous power output. You should be farmed up, and aiming for your
OR if you feel like you're being targeted a lot.

After picking up these core items, I aim for a as it gives you a shield, lots of AD, and some magic resist.

Lastly, you want to aim for as everyone's stacking armor and you will be doing a lot more damage.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS:

The only thing I recommend, if you're having trouble getting farm, survivability, and damage issues.

over

The other thing I would recommend, is picking up a

over .

This acts like a but it has the active of a so it saves you an item slot, so you can still purchase your

This will help you survive more, and clear waves faster.

NOTE: Still buy if they have lot's of hard CC such as Malphite Ult, Malzahar Ult, Sona Ult, Vi Ult etc.

ITEMS NOT TO BUY:

People are asking me "Why shouldn't I buy this? It's great for Riven."

It's really not, and I'll tell you why.
It gives her HP, something she does not necessarily need at all. An
is something you should buy just before large team fights. Considering Riven needs a lot of AD, her shield will provide her with innate tankiness, and the cooldown is low at maxed rank so it will be up every few seconds. And the slow, is not needed either. Riven has a stun, a knockup and can potentially chase you down very easy. The AD is what? 20? That's not enough, when you could buy a or a and get a lot more bonuses from it.

Crit is a luxury. Considering Riven deals a lot of AD, she doesn't need the actual crits. They don't offer anything much to her. Don't buy this either.

This is just a horrendous item on Riven.
It does nothing for her, she doesn't need the movement speed because she is mobile, and the attack speed is useless, and the crits are just wasted.

Do NOT buy this item. She is manaless, doesn't need crits, the AP is wasted and the Sheen proc is terrible. Riven's base damage on her abilities are low enough, and don't do any extra damage.

Again, this is a HP item. Not as bad as the HP/5 regen is great, because Riven's base HP/5 is good. But still, don't buy this.

We all know Thornmail is trash, and I don't know why you would buy it on anyone.
But for Riven, just don't. That's all I need to say.

Skill Order

I max

You want to aim for damage and defensive.
It's much better to hit 3 s, rather than a measly .
The shield is much more viable over , as it gives you more survivability.

Riven excels at dealing a lot of damage, and winning trades because of this shield.

Note: I chose to max over , because it is:
- 3 over 1
- More damage
- Procs passive 3 times
- More reliable to hit

I'm not saying you cannot max , I just find that is much stronger and reliable.

Masteries

I chose 21/9/0.

This gives her a bit of everything. Ever since the masteries got changed in S3, things are looking much better for bruisers at Top lane.
She gains a bit of HP, cause she is fairly squishy, lot's of AD and armor penetration and some other defensive stats.

There are other options, but top lane is such a snowbally lane if you cannot snowball yourself, then you may as well pick up some defensive stats too.

Runes

I chose these runes because they are definitely the best for Riven.

With over 600 games with Riven, I've used these runes for pretty much 95% of the time.
They are the best because they give Riven exactly what she needs: Defense, and lots of attack damage.
Considering her scales with full AD, it gives her a lot of survivability.

Considering Riven has 58 AD at level 1, you basically gain 19 AD from Runes and Masteries.
Not only does this give her MR, Armor and AD, it makes her a fairly tough champion to fight at level 1.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

Flash and Ignite.

Pretty self explanatory. I wouldn't choose anything over this. Teleport is useless, because Riven is already mobile as hell.
Heal is useless, and Ghost just isn't worth it due to her mobility.

If you don't bring Ignite, you will definitely miss out on some kills.

Not worth it, shield already is enough.
You don't really need this, Riven is already able to escape fairly well.
You already have a stun and gapclosers, this is not really needed.
Gapclosers, and mobility. Enough said.
Heal is ok. Shield already gives you enough survivability.
You don't need this, you will rarely die given your survivability.
Don't grab this, you're already mobile enough as it is. You will get to your lane very fast.

Skills

Passive: Runic Blade

Riven's abilities charge her blade, causing her basic attacks to deal 5 / 5.59 / 6.18 / 6.76 / 7.35 / 7.94 / 8.53 / 9.12 / 9.7 / 10.29 / 10.88 / 11.47 / 12.06 / 12.64 / 13.23 / 13.82 / 14.41 / 15 (+100% of bonus attack damage) bonus physical damage. Riven's blade may be charged up to 3 times and expends one charge per attack.

Explanation:

Fantastic passive. Q + Runic Blade x3 as early game harass, and you will nearly kill them.
It gets stronger as the game progresses, and it's great for a top laner.

Q: Broken Wings
Riven strikes out in front of her in a short line. This ability may be reactivated 2 additional times.

1st Use: Slashes forward, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all units she comes in contact with.
2nd Use: Slashes forward, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all units she comes in contact with.
3rd Use: Leaps into the air and slams the ground dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+60% of bonus attack damage) physical damage and knocking nearby enemies away from the point of impact.

Cooldown 13 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

Very good ability.
Very mobile, activates your passive and deals a lot of damage. Definitely max this first, as it is very easy to hit.

W: Ki Burst

Riven's sword emits a burst of runic energy that shocks nearby enemies, dealing 50/90/130/170/210 (+100% of bonus attack damage) physical damage and stunning them for 0.5 seconds.

Cooldown 11/10/9/8/7 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

This is also good.
Stun, high damage dealing. Although, this is much harder to hit and a single Q nearly does more damage than this at full max.
Still very good, just not worth maxing over Q.

E: Valor

Riven does a quick dash in the direction of your cursor and becomes shielded, blocking up to 40/70/100/130/160 (+100% of bonus attack damage) incoming damage for 2.5 seconds.

Cooldown 11/10/9/8/7 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

This is a fantastic defensive ability. Not only does it scale with full AD, but it makes you really tanky. It has a low cooldown once maxed, and you will block a lot of harass and win trades with this.

R: Blade of the Exile

Riven's weapon surges with spiritual energy for 15 seconds, granting her 20% bonus attack damage, increased range on her damaging spells and attacks, and the ability to use Wind Slash once.

Wind Slash: Riven fires a shockwave that deals from 80/120/160 (+60% of bonus attack damage) to 240/360/480 (+180% of bonus attack damage) physical damage to all enemies hit, increasing based on how much health they are missing.

Cooldown 75/60/45 seconds

Cost none

Explanation:

This is your ultimate power.
This gives you a lot of stats.

Increased melee range, more AD, and it gives you the chance to use a powerful ranged ability called 'Wind Slash'

Definitely get this whenever you can (of course) and make sure you use it BEFORE you start a trade or a teamfight.

Early Game

Early Game, Riven is pretty nice.

She settles into the game, just by farming, harassing a bit and just playing pretty passive.
Just remember, if you're going to go for a trade use:
Three s to spam, and one AA if your opponent is fairly strong and will beat you if you try to use your passive, them and then away to take no damage.

To harass: You want to be able to win trades, and not take any damage.
So: + 3 AA's to proc your passive, them, and then away to take no damage.
Generally, you won't kill them early game unless your jungler ganks hard.

But if they come to lane, without a lot of HP, + 3 AA's while they're running, just as they're about to escape, and to act as a gapcloser, for an autoattack, and then use to finish them off.

Aim to win a lot of trades early game, whilst being on top of your farm.
Farm the golems, then aim for a or to maximise your damage output.

Remember, and are great wave-clearing tools.
Use 2 's and to clear the first 3 minions.
Then use the last to hit the last 3 minions, then just AA to kill them all.

Mid Game

Mid game is still pretty good.

She is just the same, except a lot more dangerous once you've picked up that Bloodthirster.
Aim to roam a bit, as you can often score some free kills off a low health champion. ('Blade of the Exile' deals more damage as the enemies health is lower)

She will often snowball around here, try to farm up and kill as much as you can.

Now, if you want to initate a fight against your laner.
activate this before you fight.
Then, x3 AA's, then walk while AA and , then to close the gap and negate any return damage, then use your and use 'Wind Slash' to finish them off.

ITEMS:
Now once you've farmed up well, and have gotten a few kills from lane dominance, aim to buy a and

Late Game

Riven is honestly just scary late game.

Once fully build, you will smash squishes and dominate team fights.
Just pretty self-explanatory, that's all you need to know. She's a machine late game.

FOCUS THE SQUISHIES.
You must focus them, mainly ADC's as they are basically glass cannon.
Activate your , run in doing lot's of damage with your combo's, and then their ADC or fed AP mid.
And then and you'll literally take minimal damage.
their ADC or fed AP mid, and then just finish them off with a ranged 'Wind Slash'.

Remember, once a team fight is won in your favour, Riven is able to just chase due to her low cooldowns, just find them and finish them off.

BUILD:
or

This makes you a machine, it's nearly impossible to die unless they blow everything on you.

Who destroys Riven? - Lane Matchups

No one really destroys Riven, unless you are a terrible player. Riven has no traditional counters, except for maybe Jax and Irelia.

EASY:

Fairly easy matchup, you negate most of his damage with your E.
Although his R deals true damage, you are much stronger because of the stats it gives you.
Just combo him, away to take less damage from his Q.

Also another fairly easy matchup, he doesn't do a lot of damage besides he can wave clear very quickly.
If he silences you, force him to blow his cooldowns on E and Q, by using and then just use and to beat him in the trade.
Beware of facechecking a brush though, he can do some hefty damage if you're not looking.

If this is AD nid, it's going to be a very fun early game for you before she hits 6.
Just try to kill her before 6, because then she becomes quite stronger at 6.
Combo her, as she can not do any damage besides harass before level 6.
Extremely easy matchup, if you beat her pre-level 6.

He is super easy, even when you've been blinded. Just harass him with your Q's, and you'll dominate him.
His harass is super annoying, but you will be able to kill him quite easily due to how squishy he is.

Also very easy, just block his 'Parrrley' and you'll be able to dominate him in trades.
If he does harass you until you're low, you'll end up being able to trade with him because he will be out of mana.
Just block his Q, and you'll be great.

Poppy is easy, fairly easy.
Just look at her weapon, and wait for when you see the Q activation, she will try to jump on you to use it. Just use your to absorb it, and then + 3 AA's and to win the trade.
At level 6 though, her ult will make it hard for you if you're trying to kill her or she's diving you.
Just be wary of that, otherwise you should be able to dominate her.

Just absorb his Q with your E, and jump onto him when he has his abilities on cooldown.
You'll force a pool, and then if he's foolish enough to come back and farm you'll just be able to quickly snipe him down.

This is a fairly easy lane, besides those annoying random crits every once and a while.
Just dominate him, as he's fairly weak at the moment.
Post level 6, try to force a 'Undying Rage' and just snowball from farm there on.

Rengar is easy.
Just don't let him get the farm advantage, or he will start to beat you up with his items that you don't have.
Just try to farm, harass and just stay out of his way until your jungler ganks.
Get the advantage, and your lane is super easy.

Poor little fella will just get dominated, if he harass' well, then you just need to absorb them with your and you'll beat him due to your combo's.
Just stomp him, and you'll be fine.

MEDIUM:

She is quite annoying to lane against.
She can gapclose, or run away, she can parry your attacks, and return the damage to you. And worst of all, she gains a massive AD steroid from one of her abilities.
She can also negate any damage that your 'Wind Slash' will do, due to her ult making her untargetable.
Annoying lane, just try to farm and play passive.

He is just fairly strong to play against.
At the first few levels, you can just beat him easily. But once he gets a few points in his abilities and is able to transform, the trades can go either way.
(I think this lane is purely skill based)

He has lot's of sustain, a gap closer (or escape), stealth, and a nuke from his Q (if you're isolated)
He is fairly annoying, but you CAN beat him fairly easy. He is just strong once he is itemised, just try to farm and wait for his mistakes.

Super annoying guy, like a really potent slow, a wave clear and a sustain passive.
So he can harass you fairly well, just try to farm and negate him.

Just him as soon as you can, try to get the advantage due to a gank too.
Do NOT let him get free farm, even if it means sacrificing some of your own.
If he gets farmed, he can gets items. And the item proc such as Tri Force, and his Q will do a LOT of damage.

Just absorb his Q with your and you will be able to harass him well.

Malphite is the AD counter, very hard lane.
Although, you can win if you harass him REALLY well, try to absorb as much damage as you can.
Pre-level 6, he can farm well and harass you. But he burns mana super crazy fast, so look for that.

Rumble is annoying, simply because of his 'Flamespitter'.
He can farm well, and annoy you. That's his job.
When fighting him, make sure to use your to absorb his Q.
Don't get caught in his ult, and you'll be able to dominate.

Vi is annoying.
Has a wave clear, can hurt you bad and has a nice gap closer that is sort of unreliable.
This lane isn't extremely hard, but you have to pick out her mistakes and make her pay.
Her ult is devastating, try not to waste your ult.

Just something about Volibear.. he is annoying.
He will bite you, and it hurts. Try not to push to the tower, or even harass him at his tower. He will just flip you and get a lot of damage out on you.
He's annoying, just ignite him if he tries to heal with hia passive.

Just don't get hit by Q.
That's all, if he misses his Q, you'll beat him in trades.
If he maxes his shield, you try to break it, then he'll break yours.
Even lane, just try to get his mistakes and turn them on him.

HARD:

Irelia is hard.
Her true damage cannot be negated by your .
She will just farm, and will beat you in trades.
The fact that she can build tanky and just do more damage, is a lot more difficult for Riven.
Just TRY to beat her. This is PURELY skilled and stat based matchup.
Try to find her mistakes and punish her, just like most matchups.

Jax is annoying.
A gapcloser, stun, lot's of damage and tankiness.
Don't fight him, unless you have a severe advantage.

Super hard.
Does true damage, lot's of sustain, tankiness and a CC blockable ult.
You won't do much, and your stuns won't work.
You can't block his true damage. Just try to farm up, and wait for a gank.
He is the hardest matchup.

Cho'Gath is also pretty hard.
If you don't know how to play against a Cho of course.

Don't get hit by his ruptures, just absorb his W with and wait until he pushes to your tower.
His ult does true damage, which is of course another thing that Riven cannot beat.

Who synergizes well with Riven?

This guy has two forms of hard CC, and will help Riven a lot, especially if he is a jungler.
This is almost a guaranteed kill if he can combo well, and Riven just needs to stun and finish.

I'm pretty sure everyone loves to have Kennen as a team mate, and Riven is no exception.
Once Kennen ults, Riven just has to stand back and ult.
No chasing involved.

Self-explanatory.
A huge AoE knockup + Wind Slash is pretty devastating.

A pull, that will drag the enemy to Riven. She can just finish him/her off with ease.
(You may say that any Level 6 Skarner gank is a guaranteed kill, well most of them don't have a stun to back it up, and will just flash away. But Riven has a multi-target nuke and a stun.)

Same as Malphite, it's devastating.

Fun to play with, Leona is pretty much CC all around.
Too much devastation with this combo.

AoE stunning ult that deals a lot of damage.
This is just too fun for Riven, dangerously fun.

The ganks, are just too good.
Double stun/snare, gapclosers, knockbacks.
Definitely a good jungler for Riven.

So, basically.
Anyone that has a hard form of CC (stun/snare, immobilizers, etc.)

What items synergize well with Riven?

NOTE: These are not items that are supposed to be bought on Riven. These are items that a team mate may have bought, and have unique aura's, etc.

Believe it or not, this actually helps Riven. Because Riven can get kited fairly easy, the fact that it slows AS by 20% can help stop the kiting, and can actually help Riven get away easier.

This slow helps Riven catch up to enemies even quicker than before. It is a huge boost to gap closing, which she is already good at.

This is a really good item to help Riven. If she is locked in hard CC, she is most likely dead.
This removes the effects of CC from an ally, and heal them. Fantastic item to benefit her.

This is a good item that has really top of the range defensive stats. Try to make use of it's aura, it gives you a lot of added bonuses.

Life steal, and cool down reduction.
Enough said, no more explanation for this.

Armor, makes her even more scarier.
This will help her survivability.

(I didn't name them all, I am still in the experiment stage)

Experimentation

So lately, I've been testing out some new items on Riven, since S3 has bought out a whole new branch of items for AD bruisers.

Honestly, this item is actually pretty good.
It gives you a ton of AD, nice HP/5 and life steal. The passive also gives you a massive ability to split push and clear waves faster, if you feel like your team isn't pushing objectives.

I'm not sure if it is worth getting over but it has some potential.

I don't really think this item is all that good, it just doesn't give what Riven needs.
The passive is OK I guess, but besides that it really isn't that good.

Ok, this isn't a S3 item but I wanted to test it out as everyone told me that it was a core item for Riven.

And I still am going to tell you it was not. I rushed this over , and I can definitely feel the damage changes.
I was much weaker, and the only upside was I didn't die as quickly.

So basically, you sacrifice health over damage.
And it really didn't help, the fact I died anyway.

Don't buy this. Too much attack speed, and crit chance.
It's just trash on Riven, enough said.

I don't know why people actually consider this a good item on Riven.
The active is pretty much used for an assassin, something Riven is not.
It also has critical chance, it also has really low AD.
The CD is average, but the cons outweigh the pro's.

This isnt' all that bad, but still not worth buying.
Too much attack speed, low AD and the movement speed is meh.
Again, the CD reduction is average, and the passive is OK.

Feel free to try some more items out, as I'm pretty busy at the moment.
Send some feedback.

Final Comments

Thanks for viewing my guide.
I hope to make some more in the future, as this was my first one.

Thanks, and happy killing!
