Champion Matchups

Introduction

Welcome to my guide on Akali, the Fist of Shadow. Akali is an incredibly unique champion with the ability to dash 3 times with 800 range, ranged harass that actually encourages an all-in melee playstyle, and what is most likely the cleverest stealth mechanic in her Twilight Shroud. If you enjoy spamming /j and being the terror of solo q then LOOK NO FURTHER. AKALI DUNKS and if you follow these instructions you will possibly maybe not be as bad as you were when you started reading this incredibly obtuse and poorly written guide.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

These summoners are taken by nearly every Akali. Ignite because of how it adds to her killing potential and flash because of the insane utility. Flash to have almost 4 ultimate charges, flash to kill pre 6, flash to escape, flash out of a tower dive the possibilities are seemingly endless.

Masteries

http://s1272.beta.photobucket.com/user/mysticslash/media/masteriesakali_zps579f1439.png.html

This is essentially the generic Akali mastery set up. I really like the hp regen in defense to help throughout the laning phase, especially if you aren't rushing spellvamp, and the hp is necesary because of how all-in Akali is and how much she needs some added durability. As far as offense, I get 1 Ap at level 1 from the Ap/lvl mastery and 4 from the flat ap mastery, which gives me 20 Ap at level 1 allowing me to proc the Ap passive. I also get the flat ad to allow me to proc the Ad passive at lvl 1 with the 6.6 ad from the marks. This is pretty standard but you can slightly alter it depending on playstyle. Please note that defense Akali, while having its time and place, should not be done very often as one should pick Akali when they believe they can snowball the lane and therefore the game.

http://s1272.beta.photobucket.com/user/mysticslash/media/DefenseAkali_zps5825dfe4.png.html

This is an example of a generic defense Akali page, obviously subbing the armor out for MR if necesary.

Runes

Now that they changed her passive you can do a lot of different things. I'll explain it for each rune type.
1.) Reds- Mpen, Hybrid Pen.
Hybrid Pen is better than Mpen on Akali but I personally use Mpen because I am a cheap person ^^
2.) Yellows- Armor, Hp/lvl, Ap/lvl.
Armor is pretty much always the best seal in the game. It helps against early game auto attacks, AD champs, and jungler ganks. If they have all AP jungler and mid, like Karthus Fid, then you can use Hp/lvl for more durability or AP/lvl if you have huge balls.
3.) Blues- AP/lvl, AP, MR, MR/lvl
AP/lvl if you want to scale better in terms of damage into the midgame. Typically you do this if you aren't going to get much early AP or you feel like you can just dominate no matter what you bring.
AP if you feel like the opponent will let you get a lot of early double Q combos on you. Melee's who trade a lot would be the only people I would bring this against.
MR or MR/lvl if you are scared of magic dmg in teamfights or in lane. These are the runes i usually get because these combined with masteries and bulwark is more than enough MR to survive the AOE in teamfights.
4.) Quints-AP, HP Regen
This is simple. You want AP unless your lane opponent made you soil your trousers with how much poke they are going to bring. Then you want to get HP regen so you can survive it til 6 or get AP and try to all in earlier on. HP Regen is really good if you feel like you get poked down really hard early on

Skills

Passive: Twin Disciplines

Explanation:

Akali's passive. It is the biggest contributor to why people think Akali is mainly a hybrid champion. Regardless, all AD will give you more spellvamp and all AP will cause her to deal bonus magic damage with her auto attacks. This is fantastic as it helps her become the snowballing beast that you will soon discover Akali to be.

Q: Mark of the Assassin

Explanation:

Akali's Q. A unique ability to say the least as it provides both the ability to farm and harrass from a range while also encouraging the player to enter melee range as a squishy AP assassin. This is your lifeline. This is what allows Akali to survive, and sometimes thrive, pre-6. Against the multitude of champions that will punish you for getting in melee range this will allow you to get through the early laning phase.

W: Twilight Shroud

Explanation:

Akali's W and probably the one ability that bad Akalis do not use properly in the slightest. It essentially gives Akali a small, circular zone where she remains invisible if she has not attack someone recently. When combined with her R and her spell vamp it makes for a deceptively hard to kill champion.

E: Crescent Slash

Explanation:

Akali's E and her worst ability by far. However, it still has its uses. Relatively recently Riot instituted a change that allowed it to proc the mark from Akali's Q, which therefore allows Akali to proc her Q mark out of melee range. Also, this ability helps Akali clear waves as it is her only AOE damage ability.

R: Shadow Dance

Explanation:

Akali's R. This is what makes her the terror that you will soon learn (or already have learned) of. Three 800 range dashes and she obtains another charge whenever she gets a kill or assist. One of the less obvious uses is dashing to minions to both juke and to chase down targets further than 800 range away

Item Builds

While Akali's skill order is binary to the point where it is redundant and demeaning to repeat it, her item choices are extremely reactive and her builds are very versatile. There are two major Akali builds that I enjoy to use.

First, there is the tanky, spell pen Akali

Rush and situationally and sometimes a. Then, if you are roaming a lot buy a . Rylai's is a severely under appreciated item on Akali because of how it is supposedly not cost efficient. While this may be true what that does not factor in is the utility that it brings to the table. When Akali dashes on someone with Rylai's they will not escape and when you are roaming heavily this is a huge boon to her presence in the game. Then you can purchase either a if you need more damage or a if you need more survivability. If the game keeps going you can replace the least necesary of your items with a .

Then there is the famous "Carry" Akali build which is also very reactive in terms of item choices.

I generally rush either a or a depending on if I need the extra all-in potential that Haunting Guise brings to the table or if I can get away with rushing spell vamp. Then I buy some sort of boots 2, generally although and can be viable options. Then I rush a . This singular item allows you to have absurd levels of both burst and sustain. Then I complete depending on what item is needed. GA if teamfights are imminent and you already purchased all the damage you will need for awhile, void if they have a lot of MR, Zhonyha's if you need both damage and durability and you need both in spades, and deathcap if you are just that fed.

Matchups

Here I'll go over every realistic lane matchup you will face on your journey becoming King Akali.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Stand to safer side of lane (IE where you know their jungler isn't or where your jungler is) and spam Q on her and on low hp minions to last hit. This makes her charm not give the jungler enough time to kill you before the CC wears off or gives your jungler enough time to back you up on ganks. Also, it prevents her from both pushing the lane and hitting you with the same Q since minions block pathing so well. After 6, do the basic double Q combo (where you Q and wait for the CD to almost be up and then jump on them, proc it, throw another, proc it, and then shroud) and Ahri should be chunked and unable to fight you.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Start boots and dont take autos for free. Anivia is essentially a free farm lane pre-6. Afterwards it depends on the Anivia. If she plays it correctly she will shove you in hard and any attempt at counter attacks will be met with a swift R-E combo. To beat Anivia you outroam her and/or deny her blue. If you do one of those two things successfully and stay close in farm you will be able to do more good overall to your team and if you get some early kills then you will easily all in her.

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: This matchup is much trickier than the Anivia matchup. Annie autos have a HUGE range and she will punish you really hard for any CS you try to get. Also, the targeted hard CC and huge burst of Annie wreck you and you can't all in at 6. However, she is really easy to gank and has to play super aggro in order to fully shut you down, allowing your jungler to easily swoop in for a kill. Consider Merc Treads

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Farm from a range with Q. If he wastes his Q or W on minions post 6 try to all in him immediately. Merc Treads aren't that bad against him since he beats you mostly through stunning you as you dash on him and W'ing.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Cass punishes melee's really hard in general. Boots are a necessity vs Cass and just get all the CS you can get with autos and get those out of range with Q. After 6 you can all in her as long as you double Q and immediately shroud and dodge the ult that is surely incoming. That is the key to beating Cass.

Difficulty: Easy-Hard

How to play: The difficulty of this match up is based on how well you play it. You can take all his poke with spells with the amount of pots you can start with now and just zone him off creeps so he cannot sustain. He will run oom and then you will have complete control of the lane. However, if you play it wrong he will poke extremely hard and burst you down with tons of CC.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Darius severely out trades you early game but it is simple enough to simply farm from range with Q and stay away from him. After 6, a simple double Q combo into shroud craps all over Darius in terms of trades. However, you still have to be careful if he rushes hexdrinker.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Diana is essentially a tankier Akali without a few of her more exciting characteristics. With this in mind she is very, very difficult to lane against. Her shield and Q harrass is very difficult to deal with but she isn't as hard as she used to be after all of the nerfs. Whenever she wastes her Q try to get in some harrass and you can go win this lane.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Elise smashes Akali pre-6. It isn't very nice what she does to our poor ninja during that phase of the game. However, after that Akali can easily jump on Elise and combo her. If done properly, Akali can severely out trade Elise especially when Elise is in ranged form. Don't double Q combo her unless she wastes Q on creeps as that will simply give her a free neurotoxin on you when you initially walk up to Q her.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: The strongest part of Eve's laning phase is obviously her roaming. Other than that her Q harass is silly good. If you avoid the Q spam levels 1-4, you should begin to crush Eve in lane.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Fiora's Q burst is way higher than yours early game. To win this, spam Q harass and try to double proc it every time she gets a CS levels 1-2. If Fiora is good, she will begin to try to double Q combo you after that point. If she does that at that point in the game, land a Q and use E to proc it (if lvl 4 onwards) if possible and then shroud if she continues the aggression. She will take over a hundred damage from creeps if you position yourself properly in creeps. NOTE:SHROUD WHEN SHE ULTS YOU IT CANCELS IT. If you have shroud you can outduel her post 6 after first buy.

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: You got countered. You can't really kill Galio, he has a ton of CC for you in fights, and will poke you and shove you to tower in lane. On the bright side, without a gank he can't really kill you if you play it correctly. Since Galios tend to just instaclear the wave after they get blue and go do wraiths, you can push the lane and go gank yourself. This is a farm lane where the person you are facing makes your teamfights very difficult. Try to continuously make pressure on all the lanes in order to get them ahead enough where it doesn't matter.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: GP's lvl 1 harrass is deadly. Just farm from range. You can always punish a bad GP who is willing to walk into your shroud but pre-6 all you have to do is farm. Then, once you are 6 and base, you will just dunk him really hard. Just go all-in whenever he is far enough from tower and you'll kill him over and over.

Difficulty: Asian

How to play: You can run. He is far too fast. You can hide. He will find you. If you afk now, that'll be the end of it. But if you dont, he will run you down. He will find you. And he will ult you.

No but really, if you get Garen you are going to have a bad day. If he ever combos you, you are likely dead. Knowing this, farm from range and use your shroud to stop his aggression. He will try to spin in your shroud so don't be afraid to leave it unless he is about to ult you. You can honestly do ok but he is going to be far more useful to his team as you will be unable to snowball unless you roam both heavily and successfully.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Gragas is a skillshot based melee. Be the aggressor, spam Q on him every time he is in range and try to double Q proc whenever he is in melee range. After 6 a simple double Q combo will likely bring him to around 1/3 hp and he will be forced to farm solely with Q's. He does move around the map a little faster than you by spamming his E but if you are both there you are far stronger in small skirmishes. Overall a very easy matchup that you should be glad to get.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Irelia is really weak pre lvl 6 or so, even moreso than you. Spam Q and try to double Q proc whenever she Q's in for a cs. She will have to use a ton of potions but she will not die if Irelia doesn't mess up big time. At about lvl 7 she will be able to stun you and destroy if you dont get shroud down. While she will stack MR if she understands the matchup, she will likely be unable to buy the pink ward she desperately needs to kill you because she spent so much on pots at the beginning. This is a matchup where you should rush haunting guise and punish her as much as possible early game before she gets out of control later on in the laning phase.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Jarvan does a lot of damage and is not someone you just roll over. Early game his autos chunk you and he can easily dunk you with a combo or out poke you with Q. However, he will easily run oom trying to poke you even with flask and then just land a double combo post 6 and he will be chunked. Do this repeatedly and you will shove him out of lane and begin to get ahead.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: This is similar to the Irelia matchup but doesn't get out of hand until a little later. At the same time, you can't freely punish Jax early game like you can with Irelia. When he uses E you can still proc Q with E and then shroud, preventing any further aggression. His stun has a similar cooldown to your W so you shouldn't be killed without a gank. After 6, spam Q's on him but don't double Q combo unless his auto is essentially on CD from using it on a creep. You can't all in him if he has hexdrinker up, but if you proc that and run away he is killable until it is up again.

Difficulty: Very Easy

How to play: I am likely going to get a lot of people telling me that I simply have not faced good Jayces but I have faced several popular top lane streamer's Jayces and I have absolutely murdered them. Basically, you don't take free auto harass early game and then once you hit 6 base, buy spell pen, and begin to dunk. This matchup is basically GP but Jayce doesn't have a self heal or the dumb lvl 1. Wait til he swaps to ranged form then immediately go on him. He has no way to CC you and you can chunk him extremely hard.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Karthus will basically just look to farm but if creeps are pushed past the middle of the lane after level 6 ,which they will be because Karthuses (Karthi?) generally look to shove and then go farm wraiths or wolves, look to jump on him when he comes to farm the next wave. You can easily all in any Karthus early game and at the very least force him to recall. That is your cue to shove mid and roam. Akali is a fantastic roamer and killing Karthus then taking dragon or diving some lane makes Akali a definite counterpick to Karthus.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: O yes, Kassadin, the terror of low elo. Kassadin is a melee with only one real ranged ability early game. Who does that remind you of? O that is right, Gragas. Spam Q's on Kassadin, double proc it if he tries to melee a CS, and he will quickly be out of pots no matter how many he stacked. While typically Kassadin lanes turn around for him after 6 because of his generally superior mobility, you will both be ahead in terms of items and levels and be able to chase him down. Eventually a decent Kassadin will try to roam and make plays around the map but your job is to always chasing him down as your team will likely win the skirmish because of how much stronger you are than him at this point.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Katarina has one basic ranged spell that she doesn't even always max first. It does do a lot of damage early on but abuse its significant cooldown by playing it similarly to the Gragas/Kassadin matchup. She will be forced to use it to last hit and that will allow you to pull ahead in farm. After 6, a basic double Q combo with just an Hp crystal will be too much damage for Kat to handle and she will be unable to burst you down.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: This is basically a harder version of GP. Really strong early game harass, easily killed (don't dive if she has ult up) with two double Q combos, and overall not that difficult after 6 and one base.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Kennen early W harass is a good bit of damage as well. However, what makes him decent against you is that he can build tanky and do a lot of damage with a lot of CC to go with it. He can also poke you with Q. However, if he doesn't have W up he wont be able to stun you if you avoid his Q.
Land a Q behind minions then jump in for the double Q combo and most Kennens wont be able to react quickly enough to EQW stun you before you double combo him. Not that bad but be careful of his level 6.

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: This is one of the match ups where you go tanky spell pen Akali regardless of team comp.
Stack Hp pots and live through the laning phase as best as you can. Get tanky enough where lb can't one combo you and you've done a swell job. Once her QR is down it has a decent cooldown pre lvl 16 so you can try to abuse her low W cd and double Q combo her. Remember, going even is winning in this lane and you will out scale her.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: It is a common misconception that Lee counters Akali in lane. While Lee might enable more ganks on her, 1v1 Akali will beat Lee Sin. Spam Q, stand in creeps, double proc Q when he goes too close, and you will easily beat and out scale Lee.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: A good Lux is surprisingly difficult to beat as she can snare you mid R and combo you then. If you catch her out without snare you can easily kill her. Bait snare win lane.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Malphite can rush haunting guise abyssal vs you and do significant damage and be really tanky versus you. Try to spam Q on him and double Q proc when he goes to CS. You'll have enough pots to out sustain his poke and can then kill him easily. Force the early advantage and it'll be really easy.

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: Malzahar will shove you out of lane if you aren't careful to avoid his space aids. He will also one combo you at 6 onwards. Try to farm and roam as well as you can as he is basically a slightly stronger mid game LB with a weaker early game.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Nasus has a lot of sustain but you can still make him burn all of his pots and flask pretty easily by simply being unrelenting in Q spam and double Q proccing. He can't ever fight you and after 6 you will just dunk him if he ever comes out.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Avoid free autos early game. After 6 jump on her if she ever switches to ranged form as she will essentially be defenseless. She may be hard to kill but after some spell vamp this will be a free farm lane against a smart Nidalee.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Avoid trading in Melee range early game. Spam Q and make him start trades. If he lands an E, don't panic, simply retaliate with a Q and proc it. Olaf will get really tanky really fast but there is a stretch around level 6-7 where he won't be that tanky and you can try to kill him. If he gets out of hand he will be an unkillable Viking that you can't kill in teamfights. Outplaying him is the only way to win this lane but if you get a small lead you can easily win the lane.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Avoid autos early game. Ori does a ton of damage with her autos but once you are 6 just continuously all in her. Pretty simple matchup.

Difficulty: Hard (Mid) Medium (Top)

How to play: Pantheon poke at lvl 1 is once again so good it is dumb. He will kill you very easily early game but try your best to farm from range. After 6, because your ult boosts your figting ability and his lets him roam, you will begin to win the lane if you stayed close. Try to pressure him hard and guess where he is going to roam before he does it (Usually bot lane).

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: Renekton does a lot of damage, has sustain, will seemingly never die if played correctly, and all in all is one of Akali's hardest matchups. Farm from range, he will try to E WQ you, stay far enough where he wastes his rage and abilities before ever fighting him, and basically you have to lure him into a feeling of superiority in order to win this lane.

Difficulty: Easy-Hard

How to play: This lane is hard if he gets a double Q on you early game. Your job is to insure that does not happen. You beat him if you maintain bush control and dont eat a double Q. Double Q combo post 6 if he doesn't have 4 or 5 stacks and this lane will be easy.

Difficulty: Medium-Hard

How to play: Riven severely outdamages you. Especially if she gets lvl 2 before you, she can gapclose onto you and easily chunk away large amounts of your health. Even if you kill her early, be careful as she can still all in you if she goes doran's blades and gets a pink. Basically, you want to save an ult stack to jump away if she ever ults. If she doesnt have ult post lvl 7 or so you can usually win the fight.

Difficulty: TBD

How to play: Spam Q on him lvl 1 as long as you stay behind creeps as Rumbles typically start E. Once he has W he will try to shield your Q spam but you still out trade him if he walks into melee range. The key is to not take flamethrower harass for free. If you do Rumble will just smash this lane. Land a Q, walk away, if he chases wait until his Q is down. It has a short CD so use that time to double Q combo him. Be really careful of his Q and ult damage though, he will easily destroy you.

Difficulty: Hard

How to play: Ryze can afford to Q you a lot and after lvl 3 they begin to hurt. Ryze can buy a Catalyst first back and be very tanky and do a lot of damage with CC but he cannot push if he doesn't use his abilities. Once he uses his abilities jump on him and combo him. Without the CD reduction using all his abilities gives him you will crush him in the trade. However, because he gets really tanky and can just save snare for when you jump on him, he is very difficult for Akali.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Spam Q on him and double proc it if he tries to melee a CS. Punish his early game before he can stack tankiness and kill him at 6. Not that difficult until later on in the game when he has 3k Hp and a bunch of MR.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Play like the Shen matchup but only enter melee range vs him if you have a double Q combo ready. Singed will eventually be able to push lane and be unkillable when his ult is up. The difference between shen and singed is that singed will punish you if he catches you out in melee range.

Difficulty: Easy

How to play: Don't throw Q on Vlad as you wont be able to whittle him down at all because of how Vlad works. After 6 jump on him whenever you can and combo him. You crush him post 6.

Difficulty: Medium

How to play: Wukong does a lot of damage but as long as he can't combo you you will be able to do more sustained damage because of the low CD on your Q and the shroud mechanic.

Difficulty: Easy-Medium

How to play: Yorick harass isn't that difficult to live through until 6. Then, if he rushes a tear, he won't do that much damage or be that tanky. Just all in him and kill him with ignite. After you obtain an item and level advantage from the kill and shoving the wave to tower you will be able to do it without ignite. Shroud also loses ghoul aggro just like bushes do.

Teamfights

Teamfights for Akali are very depending on your power level and your team's power level. Some games you can start otherwise silly fights that turn out very well because they have no stealth reveal and/or you are fed. Otherwise play it like a normal assassin. Try to jump on their carries in the chaos of the teamfight and murder them ASAP. If they die and you live you can usually spellvamp through the rest of the members of their team and clean up. Even if you don't, you still did your job and likely made several of their teamates go to peel you off, allowing your carry to have free reign.

Early Game

You are usually fairly weak early game but not horrible. Many people get overconfident vs Akali pre 6 and you can punish over aggression with your decent Q dmg and creep damage. Once you get 3 stacks of your ult you transition into mid game.

Mid Game

Before the other team gets a pink ward or oracles you are a terror. Jump on their squishies and zone them with a well place shroud. If they blink away you can chase them down if you saved shroud or kill the tanks that are now cut off from the rest of their team with the help of yours. You are a very scary champion in mid game team fights, abuse that to snowball the game out of hand if it isn't already.

Late Game

This is where Akali begins to weaken. While many people mistakingly believe Akali to be a bad late game champion (she isn't), she isn't the monster she is in the mid game. You simply want to kill their carries but just make sure to let your tanky teamates enter the fight first. You don't want to be turned into Ninja Stew.
