Champion Matchups

Introduction

Ahri is a very strong champion in solo queue and she specializes in picking people off, with her abilities- she can easily burst down targets. Ahri is known to be a strong duelist, however she is also a very squishy champion and can easily be killed if you're out of position. Most of Ahri's abilities are skill shots take quite a bit of time to master. Ahri is one of the harder champions to play.

Masteries

I go with 21/9/0 on Ahri mainly because with the new season 3 changes, I no longer need mana regen. With the early game flask, you don't really need mana regen, so I prefer the 9 in defense to have more survivability. You get enough mana from your starting items.[http://i.imgur.com/kTZGZ.jpg]

Runes

For runes, I generally go with AP Quints , Hp per level seals, and flat mr glyphs . Sometimes I switch out the FLat MR glyphs for AP per level glpyhs depending on the match-up. [http://i.imgur.com/ESnlS.jpg]

I go with these runes when i'm playing against a weak jungle with almost 0 presence and a weak mid lane. These runes will me scale much stronger into late game. I don't really need defense runes unless i'm playing against a hard match-up.

I go these runes when i'm facing AD carries middle. I go with the armor because it helps me survive early on. When you're against an AD middle, you typically out scale them into late game. Armor runes will help you significantly.

Skills

Passive: Essence Theft

Explanation:

Ahri's passive is a spell vamp every time she stacks of 9 charges from her abilities. For each target Ahri hits with her abilities, she gets a charge and the maximum charges she can get per spell is 3 charges. You want to stack up charges to heal yourself and sustain in lane so you can save your pots further into laning phase.

Q: Orb of Deception

Explanation:

Orb of deception is a very simple and basic ability, it's a long range nuke that retracts and does damage both times as the orb hits a target. The best way to land the orb twice is to land the orb at max range, so as it reaches it's maximum lengeth, it retracts instantly. If the target is at maximum range, it'll be dealt double damage in an instance.

W: Fox-Fire

Explanation:

Fox Fire is Ahri's shortest cool down and does very high sustain damage. It is very important to use this ability correctly in order to be proficient at Ahri. The trickiest thing about this ability is using it while activating your ultimate. Fox Fire focuses the closest target and prioritizes enemy champions first. You want to be able to jump towards the target you're interested in targeting first before activating this ability , otherwise it'll hit other targets. ;)

E: Charm

Explanation:

In My opinion, Charm is Ahri's most important ability to land and is her bread and butter skill. Although the majority of Ahri's damage is through her other abilitiy, charm is the most important one because it helps catch other players. Charm is a long CC that taunts the enemy target to physically attack her. By landing Charm, it helps you land all of your other abilities and increases your damage significantly. If you're able to land charm on important targets, you can easily win your team the game very easily. There are many ways to use this abilitiy, you can flash charm or flash+ult and charm to catch other players off guard. Poking with charm also works very well as well because it sets you up to land a full orb of deception and also helps your allies land abilities on the disabled target.

R: Spirit Rush

Explanation:

Spirit Rush is Ahri's ultimate and is her highest mobility spell. It an ability that gives you the ability to jump 3 times in a time span of around like 10 seconds. This spell is very versatile because it can be used as an escape, to chase enemies down, or to kite and deal damage. In most cases, you would be using ahri's ultimate to kite in team fights and chase people down in early game skirmishes.

Item Builds

The Basic Items you Need: 1 or 2 Dorans

Whats boots do you go? Are you against a Maokai or a team with a lot of heavy CC?

Either : or

Core Builds:

You generally want to build Doran's as an early game item , buy 1 or 2 depending on your lane opponent and then go down a build order that fits your match-up. I would go with Zhonya's hour glass if I was facing a stacked ad team, DeathFire's Grasp if i was playing against multiple squishy champions and Abyssal against multiple AP champions. After choosing one of those routes, you usually rush DeathCap afterwards and then Zhonyas followed after with voidstaff.

I usually build 1 or 2 dorans ring for early game because Ahri is a really squishy champion and I like the survivability. Doran's Ring are always good, depending on who you play against , you build differently. The early mana regen, ap and health is a must.

Abyssal is a very strong item against strong AP champions. I would go this item against Kassadin, leblanc , annie , any heavy burst ap champion or even double AP. If they stack AD champions, build zhonyas.

Rush this item very early if you're playing against several AD champions. Zhonya's hourglass is extremely effective against multiple AD champions. I would generally build this right after the doran's and sorcerer shoes if you need to. Using the active ability is key for this item.

Rush this item against a team with several low hp/ squishy champions because its free kills. DFG is very strong with ahri because it's an assassins item and helps a lot. IF you rush this early, its really easy to kill targets because it amplifies all of your abilities damage by 20% including your ignite as well. DFG is an essential item on ahri, however building it at the right time is key.

You generally build this item as a 5th or 6th item after you've finished your core items and your opponents start to have massive MR items. This item is very common to be a 5th or 6th item and usually is never bought before that.

Rabadon's DeathCap is a core item on almost all AP champions and an absolute core item on Ahri. You usually never rush this item first though because you generally build for more defensive items or burst damage items; ex dfg or zhonyas. I would generally get this item as a 2nd or 3rd core item. Deathcap increases your damage overall your abilities and is a very very strong item, however it doesn't really give you any survivability at all.

Most of the time you build this, its a very standard item on ahri, however if you're playing against a heavy CC team , I would go mercury treads.

Getting this as a last item isn't too bad either , it gives you more survivability and helps you play more aggressively. Generally though, you really just need the hourglass.

Ryalai's is uncommon nowadays on Ahri, however its not really that bad for a 5th or 6th item if your team is lacking cc. Rylais Scepter works really well with ahri's fox fire.

The Right MindSet

Playing with the right mindset with Ahri is really important. You have to always remember that you're an assassin and it is very important you anticipate your enemies paths to catch them off guard. The element of surprise is key on Ahri because she is very squishy, but she does very high amounts of damage. Usually if you land your abilities on ahri, you can easily win a fight if you get the initial engage. You have to always look for opportunities to pick off your opponents.

Counters

In my opinion, these champions are the hardest counters to ahri because of their skill set. Everything in common with these champions are that they have short cooldown gap closers and they all do burst damage. Ahri is very weak against burst because she has very high mobility. Ahri is weak against burst+ CC. All of the champions either specialize in CC or gap closing . I'll explain why each champion counters ahri below.

To play against these match-ups, you'll have to very careful and safe. Try to avoid all of these champions in championselect.

PLEASE REMEMBER ahri's biggest weakness is CROWD CONTROL = STUNS,SNARES, SILENCE. AVOID AVOID AVOID AND DODGE.

In my opinion katarina counters Ahri because of her ability to close the distance between her and Ahri. Katarina has the ability to win all trades against ahri because of innate tankiness and burst damage. If katarina jumps on ahri, it is very hard for ahri to trade against katarina. As Katarina builds more health items, ahri's chances of killing her lessen to almost 0 and she'll solely need to rely on ganks. It is very hard to gank in this current meta against kat because she can jump back to creeps and wards and oracles early game are also non existant.

You need to watchout for talon because he has all of the skill sets that amazing against ahri. Talon has Silence,Burst damage, gap closing , and hes also an AD champion.

Diana is naturally tanky, so it is very hard for ahri to kill her and she also has a gap closer and a CC. IF diana lands her crescent strike, she has 2 gap closers and a flash to catch ahri. Diana has multiple gap closers and a CC .

Kassadin has silence and rift walk . He is also naturally very tank to magic damage due to his passive. Once Kassadin reaches level 6, ahri will have a significantly hard time laning against Kassadin becahse he can constantly riftwalk forward and silence her. Ahri has to be able to charm kassadin as he rift walks in to her.

Leblanc has a chain, silence and insane burst damage.

Avoid Maokai jungle, he stops your escapes completely. His twisted advance follows your flash and spirit rush.

Use Armor runes. Pantheon is really strong against ahri early game, but he falls off.

Lane Match-Up

Match-Up: Medium
1: Avoid Noxious Blast
2: Build Abyssal
3: Land Charm
4: Dodge Ultimate

Its really hard to fight against cassiopeia because of her high damage. If you can dodge her ultimate with flash, or spirit rush. You can easily take the battle and win. You'll have a really rough time in lane before 6. If you have a strong jungle , it'll be harder for cassiopeia to harass you. Once you hit 6, your killing potential increases significantly against Cassio. If she lands her ultimate on you and stuns you, you will die. No matter what, do not let her stun you. Ahri is weak against CC.

Match-Up: Hard
1: Build Abyssal
2: Call for counter ganks
3: Play passive and harass.
The match-up against Diana is fairly hard, once Diana hits level 6 .. she always wins trades against you. Your ideal situation is when she lunar rushes onto you, your jungle comes and counter ganks. If you play overly aggressive , you'll die. Once Diana gets blue buff, she'll constantly try to harass you with crescent strike. No mater what, try to avoid crescent strike and farm. If Diana misses crescent strike, go in and try to harass. It is easy for her to land spells on you, if you're being aggressive. Wait until you can pull off a good gank when Diana is out of position.

Match-Up: Easy
1:Harass
2: build dfg

Ahri's match-up against karthus is very easy. You naturally win your lane just by your skill set alone. If you can land your charm at any point pass level 6, karthus should die . The biggest thing about this match-up is that you need to be careful of the jungler. If you play overly aggressive, the jungle champion can come in and just kill you. This match-up somewhat sucks because if you mess you, you'll just go even and karthus scales harder than you do. Once you fall behind, you can't bully karthus anymore, so don't! Make sure to ward properly and harass him for every cs once you turn 6.

Match-Up: HARD
1: Buy health potions
2: Build Abyssal
3: Get MR

Play passively and farm, you really can't do anything against unless he is bad. Just farm farm farm and play passively. Buy lots of health potion because he'll try to harass you. Wait till mid game and late game fights. You have no business trying to out lane kass. If you can call for a good gank pre 6 , then do it. Once he hits 6 , you wont kill him.

Match-Up: HARD
1: LAND CHARM
2: Land charm
3: Play passively unless you land charm.

In all honesty, if you can't land charm- you're screwed in this mtach-up. A good katarina will jump on you, press w, and then run away to the left or right. Katarina can freely harass you and win trades if you don't land your charm. The best time to land charm is as she is running away after a shunpo and harass. If you can land a charm, you can easily fox fire and orb of deception her for more damage. However that is insanely hard, so you lose trades most of the time. They can run unpredictably. In Lane, your goal is to auto attack kat every time you can. You can also be defensive and farm . Ahri is strongest mid game, so try to go for that. If you want to do well against this match-up , you need to be able to charm her and counter harass.

Match-Up: HARD
1: MR runes
2: play pasive
3: go for mid/ late game.

You have to really watch-out for early game aggression because leblanc has very high early game burst. She falls off really hard if she doesn't snowball so your goal is to play extremely passively. I recommend building a lot of mr and rushing abyssal against leblanc. You also want to always keep your high above 90%. Keep yourself at full hp and you'll be okay.

Match-Up: easy
1: Dodge her Q

Ahri versus lux is a really good match-up because it is very easy for ahri to dodge lux's Q when you're going all out on her. You can easily dodge her q with spirit rush and thats the only cc that can stop you from killing her. Lux is sniper, she has really long spells and she is very squishy. You're an assassin with gap closers and ranged spells as well. Your skill set is naturally good against her. You can easily put yourself in a position to die if she lands her q on you. IF you can avoid her q ( Snare) , you'll win the lane.

Match-Up: medium
1: Dodge Bindings
2: Farm
3: Farm

IF you're playing versus morgana as ahri, you really don't have a chance of killing her unless she makes really big mistakes. A good morgana will black shield all of your charms. The only time you will have kill potential is if your charm lands. I would just farm passively into mid game and fight 3v3 skirmishes. Ahri does more sustain damage than Morgana, so she is stronger in 3v3 or 2v2 battles.

Match-Up: HARD
1: Armor
2: Farm
3: Ward

It is very easy for pantheon to setup kills on you with his jungler because he has a gap closer that can stun you. You need to play insanely passive and just farm. As the game progresses, you will out scale him. I would go zhonya's hour glass with some doran's ring. In this match-up , you just want to farm. If you have a strong jungler. you can bait his leap and counter gank him.

Early Game

Early game for Ahri generally varies depending on ahri's opponent, allied jungle, and opposing jungler. If you have a strong ganking jungle like maokai or lee sin , getting kills should be pretty easy if you're able to land charm. Most of time I play passively with Ahri and farm up until level 6 before I make any plays. Ahri is a really squishy champion, so you need to be very careful of ganks. On your first trip back, make sure to buy a ward and ward one of the sides. If you ward the right side, you want to stand towards the right side because you already have the vision there, vice versa for left side. By doing that, the opposing jungler will need to travel more distance to get to you.

Mid Game

Ahri's mid game is her strongest point. Once Ahri hits 6 and onwards, she begins to scale up really hard because of her skill set. The biggest thing about ahri is that she is a snowball champion and she snowballs really hard. When Mid game comes around, you usually start to fight for objects like ; towers, dragons, and buffs. If you're playing against a weak middle , the idea it to ward both sides and play very aggressive on the middle lane. In the middle game, your goal is to fight in 1v1,2v2, and 3v3 skirmishes because ahri is especially strong.

Late Game

Ahri's late game is really similar to her mid game. Your main goal is to try to pick people off with your charm and mobility. The more late the game goes, the more you can actually penalize people for picking people off. A kill early game means you can take objectives, dragons, or towers and it'll give you the advantage for winning the game. Once it hits late game, if you pick someone off- you can end the game if you catch the right target. It is important that you make smart plays and calculated plays on Ahri. Ahri has the skill set to catch people and snowball the game, but she can also die very easily because she is very squishy . Positioning is very key late game and getting off guard once can lose you the game.

Team Fights

Team fighting usually varies with Ahri depending on the situation. If you're playing in an even match, your main goal would be to focus fire the closest target because ahri does high sustain damage and also is very mobile. If you're playing against a team that is far ahead, your goal is to be able to snipe down the opposing carry champions depending whose the biggest threat. If you're far behind, the only way you can really win a team fight is to be able to pick off an enemy carry and force a fight. Ahri has a very special skill set that allows her to make amazing plays if you're very comfortable with her. If you're in an even match, it is much more safe to just hit the cloest target and kite back because ahri has high sustain damage, so that means that you'll be doing as much or more than the opposing carries, thus meaning you'll have the advantage. The ideal team fight is catching an enemy with charm and focusing them down. Charm is a very strong spell and is very useful is picking people off. Knowing how to poke and start off fights with Ahri is essential to being a good ahri. Charming tanks is good to start off fights because you can easily poke down their health to around 50~70% before the battle actually starts, which means you'll already start with an advantage.

If you're behind try to go for BIG Plays in fights, as you play more you'll improve.

If you're far ahead, don't go for big plays, go for safe plays and secure your victory.

Always look to catch people off guard with charm.

Regi you smell like a Brazilian its disgusting. they are horrible. have you ever watched a BR game? its like watching retarded monkeys play league without being told what any of the buttons do. you need some old spice. or fa-breeze. please regi. for all our sakes.

January 11, 2013 - 02:40 PM #3

@Barph

Seems your correct, I thought it was spell DMG too, but it indeed is Magic damage. :O

On Kata-match-ups (which seem to be quite frequent), do you guys reckon trying to charm her out of her ulti is worth it, or would it be better just to dash away once to get out of range and then bring hell once it's over?

January 11, 2013 - 01:30 PM #4

I don't know why he says DFG amplifies the dmg ignite deals, it doesn't it only amplifies MAGIC damage.

January 11, 2013 - 09:52 AM #5

misspelled "match" in the Katharina match-up "you're screwed in this mtach-up."

January 10, 2013 - 10:47 PM #6

Awesome guide. Do you think running MReg seals/masteries is a bad idea for ~beginners (Both together sum up to 6mana/5seconds which is quite a bunch)? I seem to struggle with mana whenever I'm not supplied with blue. Guess I should be less poky with Q and focus on landing the full combo whenever possible.

It's just such a temptetaion to spam those low-cd spells of hers to force people out of lane. :F

January 10, 2013 - 04:19 PM #7

I dunno why, but I laughed at the Katarina Match-up Part xD

January 10, 2013 - 01:18 PM #8

What about Ryze?

January 10, 2013 - 12:53 PM #9

as of season 3 i miss some of the common midchamps for lane matchups like Cho, Eve, Kha'zix etc. would be cool if you add some of them, besides that solid guide, would recomment if anyone wants to play ahri nowadays

January 10, 2013 - 03:24 AM #10

First "Team Fights" paragraph you spelled "closest" wrong. PHENOMENAL guide. It helped a ton.
