Champion Matchups

Introduction

Pros:
  • Volibear benefits a great deal from health which is the primary stat for most tanks in S3.
  • Strong duelist due to his passive
  • Can be built as full tank and still be a damage threat
  • Strong ganks
  • AoE slow
  • He is a bear

Cons:
  • Easily kited
  • His passive is easily countered with ignite
  • Long cooldowns on all spells

Masteries

Defensive tree is very useful all game for most bruisers/tanks as it makes them more durable early game while making their late game durable as well. Considering tanks will be in the front lines constantly, there probably isn't a situation where defense wouldn't be useful on Volibear as it's his job to block for his back lines and the other 2 mastery trees wouldn't help if we put 21+ points into them.

The spec that i went for in the defensive tree is focusing on armor, health and overall damage reduction which will help Volibear vs both jungle camps and champions.

The 9 points in the utility tree grants increased movement speed, less cooldown on summoner spells and increased buff duration.

Runes

My marks are attack speed solely to speed up the animation of my auto attack while giving me an easier time in the jungle.

My seals are currently still armor, it helps greatly in the early phase and even later in terms of facing the enemy physical attacks. Adding up the damage every camp does to you early game, these seals can reduce the damage dealt to Volibear by a large amount

My glyphs are just plain magic resistance per level, they'll give the most bang for your glyphs later on in terms of durability which is what we're aiming for in terms of playstyle/build. The reason these are per level rather than flat magic resist is because we don't expect to be hit by many spells at all early game (especially pre level 4) and by the time we're in teamfights, we'll be past the breakpoint of when the scaling glyphs surpass the flat glyphs.

My quintessences are flat movement speed as the current trend is ganking often and early. Movespeed allows us to do both as you're walking between camps faster and you have an easier time ganking.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

Smite is obvious. Flash allows for aggression and defensive play as being able to instantly relocate 400 range can be a lifesaver or what decides a gank. + can really catch an opponent off guard.

Skills

Passive: Chosen of the Storm

Explanation:


As i mentioned before, Chosen of the Storm gives you great dueling potential. However, don't rely on it too much as it's easily shutdown by ignite. Chosen of the Storm will renegerate 30% of your MAXIMUM health. That's the first reason why Volibear is really good with additional health.


Q: Rolling Thunder

Explanation:


Initiation and best ganking spell. Grants you 45% movement speed boost while running towards an enemy. Rolling Thunder gives you a movement speed boost even though you are not running towards an enemy, but only 15%. This can still be used to move around camps faster. I normally max it last because the movement speed doesn't increase with higher ranks.


W: Frenzy

Explanation:


your most IMPORTANT skill. It deals damage based on your bonus health and based on your targets missing health. This is the second reason why Volibear is so good with health. You will become tanky and still be a damage threat.


E: Majestic Roar

Explanation:


Try using Majestic Roar in a group of enemies because of the aoe slow, its an excellent spell for protecting your carry or chasing down enemies. Remember, Majestic Roar works on Tibbers, Zyra plants, Shaco boxes, Heimerdinger turrets and Malzahar pets.



R: Thunder Claws

Explanation:

This is the reason why Volibear builds Attack Speed and not Attack Damage. More AS means more procs off your ulti, which means tons of damage.


Tip: If the enemy is escaping and there are minions nearby, Thunder Claws will send lightning through the minions, and if the enemy is within range they can get struck by the lightning as well.


Skill Order

Maxing first is very important because its your primary damage spell and the attack speed bonus will help you out a lot in the jungle.

Max second because of the increased slow and clearing speed.

And max third because the movement speed buff will stay the same, even with higher ranks.

should be taken whenever available.

Item Builds

Your goal is to get tanky fast. As mentioned before, health is your primary stat but you should also focus on cdr and attack speed. Some people like to go for a more damage oriented build but i find a tank build more effective on Volibear.


A lot of people seem to think rylais is a good item on Volibear. I mean, it's not bad, but it's expensive and Volibear doesn't need additional slow.


Rageblade is also built on some Volibear's. It's cheap and deal a lot of damage. It's not a bad item if you are going for a build that's focusing on damage, but i dont recommend it. A tank build is more effective in my opinion.
