Champion Matchups

THE INTRO

Howdy, I'm LessThanDeath from the NA servers and I'm going to teach you how to play Jayce, the best top laner in the whole god damn game. Jayce is a ranged dps carry melee tank jungler initiator. He does it all and he does it well, and that's what makes him a great top lane choice for almost every single game. His versatility allows you to change your play style and adapt to the opponent. Its pretty great I know. But anyway this guide will contain how I play Jayce, MY current runes (not Jayce specific, use your own), the masteries I run which ARE specific for my playing Jayce, Item choices, and explanations for everything mentioned.
LETS GO!

Masteries

Alright, masteries, here we go. The masteries I have set up in this guide are designed to Optimize your lane phase AND your end game. This mastery page will bring you some Cooldown Reduction, Attack Damage scaling, and Armor Penetration from the offensive tree. In the defensive tree you will be getting Scaling Health, Armor and Magic resist (flat and per champion), Reduced incoming damage (from turrets and overall damage), Percent Health Increase and Reduced Respawn Time. Thats a lot of stuff, I know, but its all good for your early and late game.

Runes

Ok now I just want to say that this runepage is what I use on every top lane ad I play, but I made it originally for Jayce. It provides an immediate +15 Attack Damage, an immediate +12 Magic Resist, and 175 Health at level 18. I made this runepage because it gives you strong level 1 damage and, personally, Ap tops always give me trouble. So early magic resist makes that just a little bit easier to deal with. Now in the late game, this extra health really DOES make a difference in team fights and 1v1 skirmishes with other champs.

Other runes that might work are scaling magic resist, flat armor, flat health, and armor pen. Try them out for yourself and see what works.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
These are the summoner spells I run with Jayce pretty much every game. Take ignite for kill secures to push an advantage in lane. Take ghost to chase and escape the enemy, it works very well with your acceleration gate and passive IMO. Other good choices for summoner spells are flash (definitely take this if you have jarvan on your team) and teleport. Both of them are provide good mobility and make it easy to gank and escape ganks.

Skill Order

The skill order I've shown in the guide is what I use in top lane. It keeps your damage high enough to fight, gives you good sustain from your W in hammer form, and keeps your poke damage high. Once again THIS IS WHAT I USE. If you don't like it then level your own way. GOD!

Skills

Passive: Hextech Capacitor

Explanation:

This is a great passive in my opinion. Every time you swap stances you get a speed boost. Its great for chasing and escaping.

Q: To the Skies! / Shock Blast

Explanation:

This ability is your bread and butter. In hammer form its your gap closer, in cannon form its your poke. It does TONS OF DAMAGE.

W: Lightning Field / Hyper Charge

Explanation:

This is your sustained dps ability. An area of effect damaging spell in hammer form, a quick burst of auto attacks in cannon form. Pretty damn good.

E: Thundering Blow / Acceleration Gate

Explanation:

Your E has a variety of uses. In hammer form you can knock back tanks in team fights, knock away enemies when getting ganked, or use it for the damage. It does percent damage too, which is great. In cannon form you can use this to power up your q, and to help your team escape or chase an enemy. Mixed with your passive speed boost this does wonders for your mobility.

R: Transform: Mercury Cannon / Transform: Mercury Hammer

Explanation:

Lastly your "ultimate". Keep using this skill to change stances to suit the situation and role you are playing, speed up ganks or escapes, and to activate sheen procs for damage. you also get an onhit damage proc based on what stance you switch into. VERY COOL.

Early Game

Ok so you've picked Jayce as your top lane champion and you started the game. Follow the build order in the guide vs almost every single opponent you could get. Deviate from the guide if you need to counter build, ITS OK! COUNTER BUILDING IS GOOD! That's how you win. In fact this whole build was derived from me counter building Faggoty Fuck nugget Garens in top lane for like 4 games in a row. ITS GOOD, DO IT.
As for actually playing what you should do is take advantage of your early sustain and just shoot shock blasts at the enemy when you can. If somebody runs up on you and you aren't particularly excited to fight them, just swap to your hammer, knock them back with E and run away. Now if you aren't careful you could end up pushing the lane pretty far which will make you prone to ganks, so pick up wards when you can afford it and if you do get ganked by any chance, knock back the enemy ganker with E, swap to the cannon and run away using the acceleration gate if you need to. Dont be afraid to use summoner spells to escape either, You do have ghost to escape and barrier if you need to absorb some damage. Keep an eye on those cooldowns though. now when you've pushed too far and you want to keep farming, as purple team you can go do double golems and come back into lane suffering only minimal damage. As blue team you could maybe convince your jungler to do double golems and leave wolves for you to take when you over push. Another thing you can do while over extended is counter jungle their team or gank mid over and over again. Its very funny. and effective.

Mid Game

Alright now we're in the mid game. Hopefully you are fairly fed or farmed and are bringing the hurt onto the enemy team. Some towers are probably gone and you are probably roaming. In my experience Jayce can easily 1v1 most champions, so what I like to do is hunt down the enemy jungler and just keep killing him till he either quits or is too afraid to jungle farm. Play it safe though, bring some wards and keep an eye on the minimap, or you might get ambushed yourself. And that sucks. As for lane ganking I tend to focus on mid, so that you are still close enough to protect your tower if you need to and you can still go back top to farm. Farming is important. KEEP FARMING.

Late Game

Ok its late game, we're teamfighting now. Shit is important and you need to be the hero of tomorrow that your team needs, not the one those idiots deserve! You should be tanky enough to take a hurting and initiate if you need to, and you should have enough damage and sustain to keep poking the enemy. When the team fights start up, throw out an accelerated shockblast then switch to the hammer and jump on the enemy carry if you can, otherwise just go for any high priority target. Unload on them, knock them to or away from your team and swap back to the cannon for another shock blast and a W burst. But keep an eye on your carry, its more important to keep the carry alive than it is for you to just play manmode Jayce and attack the enemies. You may do A LOT but the carry does A LOT MORE assuming they aren't bad. Just trust me, go for that high priority target, drop em, and fallback to help protect the squishies on your team. If you just aren't bursty enough to get that initial kill for some reason, just focus on protecting your carries and helping keep them in the fight. Don't feel bad if you die either, If your 1 death gets that miss fortune 4 kills then embrace it and brag. Call the other team stupid for focusing you and laugh. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Team Fights

As Jayce, you have a variety of different roles in team fights that can vary from being the designated tank to playing a carry role. By following my guide you can play both of these roles quite effectively as you will be tanky enough to take a beating and you will do ludicrous amounts of damage between your items and abilities.
When you see a possible team fight coming along you want to poke poke poke as much as you can. Maybe you can get blue buff to help with this but remember to check with your jungler and mid lane first. Keep using accelerated shock blasts to chunk the enemy until either your team tank, you, or any of them initiate on you.

Initiator/Tank role: Your goal is to find an opening in the enemy team's defense and jump on it. Jayce has a great kit for initiation, just remember to keep your team in the loop or things could end very very badly. Try poking them down with your E/Q combo in cannon form to create some of these openings, you might even get a kill or force a member of their team to go B to heal. Now is your chance. Find a high priority target like the Ranged AD, AP carry, or their jungle (those are ussually the best targets but not the only ones) and use your Q/W combo in hammer form to jump to them and start the fight. Knock back their tank with your hammer form E and your job is done! You and your team should be able to handle the fight from this point on just remember to focus the proper targets.

Carry/Damager role: If you've built more on the damaging side then the tanky side, this is probably the role you'll be filling on your team. Now this doesnt make you the ad carry, when I say carry I simply mean you are prioritized as a damage dealer for your team instead of a tank. When playing this role I prefer to stay in cannon form as generally getting too close can end up with my death. So, anyway, stay in your team and just keep poking with your E/Q combo. When the team fight starts out, find your target and just let them have it. unload every ability you have in both cannon and hammer form, then swap back to cannon form to take them out. Just don't get caught, and focus whoever your ranged ad is focusing.

Final Comments

Alright, that's all folks. If you have any input or questions just let me know in the comments section and I will get back to you ASAP, I mean it. If you find anything that could be improved let me know, and above all go try it out in some normals. If you like it then practice and bring it to ranked. Good luck in those games, everyone.

This is an all right guide. Your item builds are pretty sensical, only if you're going against a counter or somebody like Yorick. That's when you would get regen items like that. Your double points into W early game personally I think would hurt you; you should have better mana control than that. Other than that, your skills are leveled in the right order. Again, personally, I take flash, but ghost is okay too. All in all, being a Jayce main player, I like this guide. Throw in some alternative guide pieces; you've earned a thumbs up from me.
