Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hello there, I'm Detroph, a 18 year old LOL addicted player from the EuWest server and this is my first guide ever. I personally like to experiment with new champs and to try out some silly builds with them like AD bruiser Draven ( which wasn't a very good idea :P ). At first I wanted to play Thresh as a jungler, but after some testing I dicovered sadly that his clear speed isn't great at all, even compared to the most played jungler since S1 , Annie. Nahh kd.

Well, after some reflexions, I thought Threshs whole kit could perfectly fit a new role in the toplane that only Kayle and Jax could partially fill, a tanky hybrid bruiser, this means taking maximum 3 slots for damage items so it is still possible to build tanky. First of the passive of his Q grants him a on-hit effect that does magic damage, but scales of his attack damage. Also his passive helps him to gather early armor and ability power, without buying items at all, ergo his spells that scale of ability power still do decent damage.

This little paragraph was supposed to explain my thoughts, now let's start with the initial guide :).

Masteries

The Offense tree

In the offense tree we pick up both of the penetration masteries, because we will basically deal 50% magic damage and 50% attack damage with the help of his Q passive which will be explained later. To reach this you can also skill the CDR mastery, I still prefer the attack speed :).
We also do want the "Brutal Force" masteries for the extra 3 attack damage which can be important a level 1-2 harass.

The Defense tree

In this tree we take the masteries that helpful too survive the toughest lane , the top lane. We take every mastery point we can afford to mitigate the auto attack damage of the trades. We also take some points in Magic resistance because our build will lack some until the very end :/.

Runes

Marks

[http://www.solomid.net/guide/runes/mark3.png] For marks we take the hybrid penetration runes for the same reason as in the masteries, we want to counter most toplaners that stack one type of resistance, or even force them to waste their precious gold for tanky items that offer the both type of resistances that are quiet expansive.

Seals

[http://www.solomid.net/guide/runes/seal1.png] For seals we take the most overused runes of the bot and top lane, the flat armor runes seals. [http://puu.sh/1SHd3]

Glyphs

[http://www.solomid.net/guide/runes/glyph4.png] As our build will lack magic resistance we will need some so you might want to take the flat or scaling magic resistance glyphs.

Quintessences

[http://www.solomid.net/guide/runes/quint1.png] For Quintessences we take the flat attack damge quintessences in the same spirit as with the "Brutal force" mastery, flat attack damage helps to do sustained hybrid damage with the Q.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
Flash is an exceptionally strong Summoner spell throughout the game, especially because it can be used both offensively and defensively. Early game it can save you from ganks or invades, and especially it can net you a lot of kills because you can flash in to the range of a low HP enemy and then finish them off. With champions like Thresh flash can help your team to initiate and win fights with the help of your heavy crownd control.

Explanation:
Ignite increases your killing potential strongly and is always a very vital Summoner spell for sololanes, this summonerspell sometimes wins you the lane.

Skills

Passive: Damnation

Explanation:

This passive ensures us a quite relax early game because of the heavy armor buff you gain from it, but il also synergizes well with the idea of a tanky, hybrid bruiser because of the free ability power you gain from it that helps you deal more damage with your spells like Flay and Death Sentence

Q: Death Sentence

Explanation:

This Spell is your bread and butter with this build, first of all the active is a mix of a micro Blitzcrank grab and a Amumu Bandage Toss, although you can choose to dash to your target or not by reactivating the ability. But the most important part of this ability is its passive, a on-hit effect which deals magical damage equal to the total number of souls collected plus a percentage of his attack damage, based on the amount of time since his last attack. Combined with a Muramana and a Iceborn Gauntlet a fully charged autoattack with 220 attackdamage can deal up too 600 magical damage (without counting the initial autoattack).

Also this ability should be maxed by level 9, always!!.

W: Dark Passage

Explanation:
This ability is places a lantern on a selected area which shields you and your allies around it for a certain amount, upon clicking on it a ally can be pulled towards your actual position. This ability allows you to save your carries, to win trades in lanes, and to make plays that can change a whole game. The usage of this ability differentiated a good Thresh form a bad Thresh.

This ability should be maxed second, because the shield is needed to win effectively trades.

E: Flay

Explanation:
Using this ability will push your enemies away or towards you, depending on where your mouse aims at
( in front of you=pushes in front of you and pulls behind you ; behind you=pulls in front of you and pushes behind you)

We take an early point in this ability for the utility, which means the slow an the knock back, but it should be maxed last because the damage provided is minimal and the utility stays the same.

R: The Box

Explanation:

This ability is your ultimate, upon activation it places a pentagon shaped box around you. If an enemy collides with a wall it is consumed and the enemy takes damage and is slowed.

This ability should be used in lane to give the finishing blow to a practically dead opponent in lane.
In teamfight you should use this ability to trap.

Items

Starting items

+

You may start with cloth+5 pots when you're against a strong early game champion, or any champion that do ranged auto attacks like Riven or Kayle.

+

This is a classic, and you may want to start with these if you play against a champion that rely on skillshots, or any other champs that may deal ridiculous amounts of damage if they are near you like Singed ,Darius and Olaf

Boots

Mercury treads

These boots are always good to have, with these you don't have too fear cc ass much ass you would without them. Also you might take them if you're against an AP top, because well you know we still lack magic resistance :(( .

Ninja tabi

You might pick up these boots if you're against a full AD team, as we see them more and more in season 3. You should also pick these boots if your lane opponent deals alot of damage with his auto attacks like the fearsome Riven or AD Nidalee.

Final build and options

Muramana

This item offers practically no manaproblems that most tanky bruiser have in late game, also the passive is awesome as it provides you more magical on-hit damage that scales of mana. When trying to stack your Tear of the Goddes you should upgrade it as fast as possible to a Manamune because you don't want to use your spells too often on lane in risk of a gank, so you can simply stack

Iceborn Gauntlet aka Frozen Fist

This item is plane awesome, as it synergizes well with the Muramana. But wait there's more. Thresh is already a champion that has allot of crowd control, but this item adds a AOE(area of effects)slow which is very nice for peeling for your teammates, or to prevent them from fleeing from you. The Sheen component of this item also adds some serious damage after hitting a Q .

Blade of the Ruined King

You should use the Vampiric Szepter bought during laning phase to build this item, or a Bloodthirster which will be explained next. The Blade of the Ruined Kingadds a good on-hit passive which does attack damage in height of 4% of the targets maximal health, this helps you to deal sufficent damage to tanks which stack HP,and this more likely than ever in S3.
Also the active helps you stick to your target and win trades by stealing HP.

The Bloodthirster

This item grants you alot of sustain and AD once stacked completely, but this should only be build if you're really ahead because you're an engager which will most likely die, die very often in teamfights, this will cause that you loose half of the BT stacks.

Warmog's Armor

This is the new most build item in Season 3, but there's a reason why. It is very cost efficient and it provides you good sustain with its passive. Also this item is great because you will already have a lot of resistances with Thresh when you follow this build, so you gain allot of effective health (I can't really explain this concept but there are a lot of guides which explain this very well).

The Wit's End

This item is great because your base attack speed isn't that great, and the passive helps you to do more sustained damage per auto attack. When you lane against an AP top champ like Vladimir, Teemo or Rumble it is a must have and then, only then you should delay your Manamune, ergo your Muramana to build it.

Other items which can replace Wit's End

Runic Bulwark or Spirit Visage

If you don't want to build a Wit's End or you need way more magic resistance because the enemy AP mid is fed or they have double AP, you can choose between a Spirit Visage or a Runic Bulwark. The Spirit Visage grants you more health and sustain. Whereas the Runic Bulwark grants you also armor and a nice aura for your team.

When should I play Thresh top??

Thresh is a very special pick and shouldn't be picked against special teamcompositions and against some toplaners.

Against whom should I pick Thresh?

Thresh shines against champion that have no real or only small gapcloser and don't deal any ranged damage. He is also really good against champions that only have a small movespeed steroid.

The champs you counter are:

  • Darius
  • Singed (against Singed I suggest you build early magic resistance for a Wit's End, a Bulwark or a Spirit Visage)
  • Garen
  • Nasus
  • Shen
  • Cho'Gath ( same as with Singed)
  • Maplhite

What are my counters?

Any ap top that deals sustained damage and is able to zone you from your souls like:

  • Vladimir
  • Rumble
  • Kennen
  • Teemo

Any top laner that have good gapclosers, good movementspeed steroids, and soft or hard CC like:

  • Riven
  • Kayle
  • Nidalee
  • Kha'zix
  • Jarvan IV
  • Alof
  • Yorick
  • Irelia
  • Xin Zhao
  • Pantheon

Team composition around Thresh

As Thresh you shouldn't play when you have a too AP oriented team, because the enemy will start building magic resistance.
Thresh is really good when you have a strong AD mid or jungler, because when the enemy team looks at what your teams biggest damage source will be, they will think you have a team that dashes out mostly attack damage, which is really wrong since most people don't know that even when Thresh builds attack damage his main damage will be mostly magic damage.

Final Comments

I hope you enjoyed this guide, and that there are not to many mistakes because I'm not a native English speaker :/.
This Thresh build and play-style are fun and I really enjoy playing him on a sololane, and I hope that this fits yours too :).
