Champion Matchups

Introduction

This guide is to show an alternate way to play draven. and my favorite way to play him. while it doesn't change his play style to much. it changes where his strengths rely and at which points in the game he is strongest

This is a build that i cannot ENTIRELY take credit for. everything in this guide was taken from different people and mashed up into one guide for one champion. i have influence from many different people.

This build you are ment to be a bully in lane. as well as a very high sustained dps for mid-game. where alot of ADC's fall off with the crit gap. and after lane phase there really arn't many people you have to be scared of unless they out number you.

I will add to this guide as i get more familiar with the jungling and alternate laning. and once i get some gameplay footage that's mine to show. i don't want to rip off someone else's youtube videos

Good, Bad, and the ugly

Good:
-High sustained DPS
-Can lane anywhere
-Carries over to lategame well (Strong early game)
-Very fun champion
-He can do it all. With style

Bad:
-No escapes
-High skill cap
-easily focused
-lowish attack range
-relies on support in bot lane more than others

The Ugly:
-His Soul reaver skin looks cool. but he deserves better :(

Masteries

Theese masteries allow you to be somewhat tankier than usual with the 9 defensive, ignore the crit in the offensive tree as this build does not include crit and get the minion damage. as we start with a fort potion out last hits will be slightly inhibited untill that is used but shouldn't effect anything atall because lasthitting with spinning axes is very strong. generally early game you should win against most comps bot lane

I feel that these are the best masteries for draven. he is an all out ADC. and thus should be heavily based in the offensive tree. and because there is no real offensive gain in the support tree having a bit of extra defense is the next best thing. i prefer to choose the bonus health and armor in the tree because it also includes an intimidation factor. even though draven is still squishy. alot of times people could be intimidated by a high health pool combined with this kind of damage even though they might win in a straight brawl. so they run. and because of that they lose the trade or even die.

The way the current meta is with tanks and bruisers running the show. it can't hurt.

Runes

Therese Runes i find to be best for draven. The combination of armorpen and AD i find gives him the best early game damage output. the 1% crit just so you have it. i have had crits at level 2. sacrificing 1 ad for 1% crit just so there's always that chance is completely worth it. the bonus AD from glyphs i prefer as i don't run into much magic damage bot lane. so when mid game rolls around you should have enough lifesteal to not worry about casters and then sit on your giants belt so you don't get bursted

Early game draven AD will out-preform armorpen. but once you back and get your B.F Sword. armor pen becomes stronger. having both armorpen and AD runes gives you a nice between zone where you have your fortitude potion and Ad runes. + armor pen for just a boat load of early game damage. then when you get your B.F sword you have armor pen to fuel that.

Other choices of runes would include a full page of armor pen or AD. Life steal quints, as this build is a focus on life steal. and movement speed quints are not a bad idea too. preferably these runes give you the most lee way while you farm up for the B.F sword.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
Flash Ignite, i don't take clense on draven as he is ment to be a bully and early game killer. so if you can force clense without using ignite you're golden.

Flash most people use as an escape. but what draven does is he can flash into the enemy carry use stand aside and assault with ignite. more times than not i have gotten first blood or a kill by flasing into the enemy and before they flash away pop ignite and one spinning axe for the damage over time to finish them off.

I used to run these Summoners. and they still work outstandingly well because draven is such an assaulter and bully in lane. it's nice to have a consistant movement speed increase rather than just a burst of movement. and exhaust with the armor reduction from the mastery wasn't really noticable but it could potentially lead to a kill rather then the enemy living with 10 health. mostly taken for the slow and lock-down + the inability to fight back

I personally don't like clense on draven. he is an aggressive ADC. while clense could save you from being killed or get you out of a sticky situation, i feel that ignite or exhaust would be a better choice for early game kills which cause draven to snowball hard

Same reasons as clense

Skills

Passive: Wicked Blades

Explanation:
Deals ALOT of damage, don't disregard this. this can lead you to VERY many kills and harass early game. it deals physical damage so armorpen is a great in runes. it rolls pretty quick so don't worry about holding off on auto attacks to get more ticks before throwing another axe. and it scales up with level. so keeping your level high is a big aspect for draven.

Q: Spinning Axe

Explanation:
Don't worry about missing an axe or two. the main priority is to get 2 axes and catch atleast one so you can keep bloodrush up. this is our main damage early game. max it first and watch the chunks. the axes with land in your general direction of movement when the axe HITS the target. it is NOT based on where you were moving when your THREW the axe. so it is a good idea to step shoot with draven. with 375 mmovement speed is the golden zone. gives you enough time to throw run catch and throw without stopping to wait for the axe. but you have little to do anything else before catching it.

W: Blood Rush

Explanation:
Great steroid, long cooldown. make sure you catch atleast one axe to keep this up as mid-late game this gives draven more dps than spinning axes itself. This is an attack speed and movement speed steroid. it is great mid-late game, this combined with spinning axes is what draven is all about. make sure this has as high of an uptime as possible. you should wait to pop it untill you're about to catch an axe. this way it refreshes for when you need it or for when you're about to catch another axe. makes for a great assaulting buff.

E: Stand Aside

Explanation:
Simple and effective, it's a slow and a small knock aside. it's great for chasing down running champions
The range on it is very nice, you can hit most champions from their auto attack range from it if they don't move. it knocks them away from the center. so when you're running away make sure you angle it so it atleast hits. but it does not knock them into you or a teamate. or if you're chasing from an angle. you want to hit them away from safety.

R: Whirling Death

Explanation:
Works like sivir's Boomerange blade. it goes out. deals damage and comes back, dealing damage on return. I try to save this for executions and dragon/baron. if you're good with timing you should press R to return it before it hits anyone so it slows down and returns AS it hits, giving less time for the enemy to dodge the return damage. it has a great AD ratio on it. and deals massive damage with alot of AD and armorpen which this build has... it is not a bad idea to use this at the start of a teamfight if the enemy likes to group up. punish them. you will chunk their entire team for alot of damage which could give your team the edge to win. or late game to stack your cleaver

Skill Order

Spinning axes gets up to 85% of your damage at rank 5, naturally this is the best option for poke and dps. so max it first.

Get stand aside at level 2 for the initiate potential of someone who gets just a little to close

Level 3 Blood rush, when you have your whole kit as draven you can really bully the enemy ADC, max it second beacuse it's a strong steroid and is usefull for chasing them down

Item Builds

This is an odd build.

DISCLAIMER: This build uses 0% crit chance as a base. and therefor in order to keep your dps up late game is a high armor penetration build. thus why Black cleaver is recommended in the core Build as a last item rather than any of the alternative items

The openeer: The opener alone is weird to most people. i personally prefer this build. draven dosn't need much early game to be a bully. so the added sustain of 5 HP pots and a mana pot is amazing, the fortitude potion is amazing for ealy game skirmishes bot. and has led to baiting the adc or the junglers death by poping it right before one dies and getting a kill. if you farm 1550 gold without using it. go get your BF sword and get back to lane. pop it right before you initate a fight just for the added damage bonus, at this point in the game you won't need to bait anything.

The build. [imgext=]

To most this build looks foolish or weird. no crit on an ADC. well this build is better for people with high micro skills. as it focuses on catching axes. rather than going crit based which eases the burden of axe catching a slight but but also adds in the added crit chance.

Rather than having to worry about hitting with a spinning axe and hoping that crits. or a regular auto attack that dosnt crit. there's a big gap in damage with draven. so i opted out of the chance.

Dravens Spinning axes at rank 5 is 85% of his attack damage. that's nearly a crit without an infinity edge. 15% off. but aslong as i keep my axes going it's 100% of the time. so by rushing two bloodthirsters rather than getting an infinity edge at some point. spinning axes will hit for a consistant very high damage. add in all that armor pen and even tanks will fall. The lifesteal is also amazing as you now have the ability to go toe to toe with some (not all) bruisers and tanks that are carry killers. i have had jarvans and garens run at me with sunfires and warmogs. just for me to completely lifesteal tank their damage

As this build focuses on high damage over anything else i don't think that is a good choice. it is less lifesteal and less damage. yes it has 4% on hit but at the same time this build has no attackspeed aswell as it's damage is based off spinning axes and auto attacks. so less damage = less fueling spinning axes

vs : I preferably say warmogs is much better, at the moment it is League of Warmogs. it's just a stronger pick. all that extra health will help disperse burst damage allowing your lifesteal to catch up. aswell as with a GA if you do die. the enemy will most likely sit ontop of your body and wait for the respawn anyways.

This is a non-crit build. so i will not review items like I.E, PD, or anything like that. the only time i will ever suggest a PD Ghost blade of zephyr. is in place of boots. after you finish your entire build

This build is a FOCUS on the dual bloodthirsters and getting as much out of them as possible. this is why i prefer double armor pen items. because there is no crit to fuel them and thus makes everything in dravens' kit stronger rather than his auto attacks alone. but say you started slow or your team has alot of magic damage. so even by late game they have low armor. preferably the last whisper would be better as it doesn't require a stacking time. but the stacking time of Black cleaver is not long at all with dravens' passive and everything about him dealing physical damage.

There are only a few items i can recommend that accent this build nicely other than armor pen

A third bloodthirster. one of the better items i would get other than armor pen. another bonus 100 damage, 20% more lifesteal. the focus of this build is around the two bloodthirster core and armor pen. if you have nothing to buy after a lastwhisper or a black cleaver and a warmogs. rather than getting the latter armor pen item against a squishy team. get a third Bloodthirster

. You get more AD from the black cleaver depending on your health. but you lose armor pen and you gain crit. while not a bad thing with the high damage count you will crit very hard. but again that's a chance thing and a very low chance. It is also cheaper than the Black cleaver

A decent trade item aswell. gives some nice Tenacity for stuns. as you cannot lifesteal if you're stunned. some movement speed to help your kiting. a bonus 20 AD as this is a high AD build. and a massive increase to attackspeed. which combined with all the AD and Lifesteal, against a reletively squishy team this will increase your DPS much more than any other item.

. If you feel like you deal enough damage. get a GA, you can never be TOO safe if you're winning. just make sure your team has enough damage as the ADC before going double defensive, you still have to be one of the highest DPS champions on the team. generally a warmogs is enough but some teams can be annoying. with the added Resistances your effective health goes up. meaning each point of health is worth more in damage. which also means each point of lifesteal is also worth more. this is why i used to prefer GA first. 1000hp with High resistances gives alot of effective health, but low numerical health. yet 300hp with low resistances gives low effective health. but high numerical.

And yes it is possible to have less effective health than you have numerical health. this is if somehow you get into the negative resistances. such as black cleaver + spirit fire. or anivias' egg at early levels

Again a strong item because it has AD on it. and armor pen. The crit chance is nice when it does happen. the steroid combined with your W is amazing only when you don't need to run to catch axes. great for fights where your enemy is in an auto attack duel with you. which with the dual BT core. you should win easily

Early Game

in lane, Make sure to last hit with spinning axes. you can lead the spinning axes with movement.

After you toss the axe. run in the direction you wish the axe to go. you will lead the axe.

You have 5 health pots. let your support know and be a bully. if you have anyone with a cc as a support you should beable to pick up a kill easily. just pay attention, you have no escapes if things turn sour

Be a bully in lane. that's what dravens ment to be. spinning axes will chunk generally you wont win a fight 100% hp to 100% hp. but you have harder poke than others. so make sure you're always poking. keeping up your CS is a big point too. you want to first back with a BF sword. you want that asap. so dying trying to get a kill is not worth losing the CS but by all means getting a kill is just that much more of a snow ball.

once you do get your BF sword. it's time to be as big of a bully as possible. if you're lucky you should get your BF sword around level 6. get it get back to lane. and get ready to fight. you should out damage the enemy ADC by far. so just poke around till you can get an initiate. with your ulti you should beable to deal massive amounts of damage in just a short amount of time. if you feel like you dont need the burst save it incase they flash away and you can use it to execute them.

Mid Game

By mid game, you should be hitting like a truck with twobloodthirsters. make sure to keep your farm up and keep them stacked if you die. as with all adc's you want to attack the least risk target. alot of times you will get engaged on. if it's only the enemy tank generally you can sit and fight him with the lifesteal. but try and kite/disengage because his team may show up. aslong as you can catch one axe to keep bloodrush going you should be more than fine.

Draven also makes a killer split pusher. hitting a tower while your q is active refreshes it. allowing you to keep two axes on standby. aswell as you will ahve so much lifesteal they will be forced to send more than 1 person to stop you. allowing your team to push down another lane or win an engage. if you're feeling ballsy and you have an advantage. see what you can do vs the people they send. i have taken on two people at once and came out scott free because of the lifesteal. just depends on the champions they send at you and how fed/farmed they are.

Getting red buff also helps immensely. the slow will help you assault aswell as the Damage over time from red goes well with your passive. if you want to split push a bit draven is great for split pushing and 1v1 fights mid game. but remember you have no escapes.

Late Game

if you get your full build you should be a tank as well as deal massive amounts of damage. that doesn't mean to run in first though. you are still the adc and will be focused. the warmogs is just for burst dispursion. and the life steal is for sustain during a fight so you can get back into it immediately. I rarely find the necessity but after a point you can sell boots for a phantom dancer or a ghost blade. both work very well. i like the phantom dancer. but the ghostblade is nice. the extra armor pen is amazing and you can destroy tanks like they were paper. with as much damage and armor pen as you have. there's no need for an infinity edge. i have hit crits upwards of 1.2k with this build. and that was on bruisers with armor.

At this point in the game it's your job to deal as much damage as possible with as little risk as possible. that's why i like this build. you have consistent high damage without the worry of crit. aswell as the two strongest armor pen items. this means attacking the tank that's closest to you will still cause massive damage as well as the life steal keeps you safe. make sure to down any towers that might be low on health before participating in a team fight. as an ADC you need the be in the least risk. and downing that tower is the least risk there. it's your teams idea to tower dive. that doesn't mean you have to die for it. get the tower down then fight. you have the most damage and seigeing power out of all of them.

Team Fights

Like all ADC's your job is to attack the least risk target. The whole point of this build is the double bloodthirsters. During teamfights you can tank the Low-Damage Tanks that try and break you apart from the fights.

The most you need to do in fights is catch axes. the damage comes from your axes and armor pen. don't be afraid to fight someone. Draven is weakest while HE is the one doing the running. now that doesn't mean sit there and tank the enemy team. but it does mean fight. if someone is chasing you. run away from the team fight so it's a 1v1 with light-moderate kiting on your part. you should beable to out sustain any damage they deal to you. allowing for two options.

A. they try to run away to re-enter the teamfight. meaning they take alot of damage from you if not die.

B. you turn around. being that you can tank their damage with lifesteal and attack a slightly squishier and higher priority target... This one being the rarer case of the two as most of the time they will die sooner than this will happen

Top Lane

Draven is a solid top laner. i follow the same build and the same skill order. but being that top lane you are now mono-e-mono with someone else. the feeling of being free is amazing. you only have to worry about one enemy. not two enemys and your support. his sustained damage is so high for top lane that at level 3 if they are not a tank. you could easily burn a flash or get a kill. if the enemy is a tank. just poke them down. most tanks are not good ealy against high poke damage. and if hey get close you still have stand aside to run away.

Make sure to ward top lane!!!!!!!!!

as draven you only have a small movement steroid. not much of an escape. keep top warded to prevent from being camped and you will be a happy executioner.

Mid Lane

My Personal Favorite lane with draven. most people dont see this coming. you put a cass or leblanc bot lane with a stun. and they are good to go as a kill lane. you in midlane have the luxury of being free. once again. but with the element of WTF on your side. most casters won't know what to do against an adc at theese levels. not to mention alot of casters have amazing ultis that could win lanes at level 6 that they rely on. however since dravens dps is based on auto attacks and spinning axes and not cooldowns. you could easily go toe to toe with mid laners. even more so alot of mid laners do not have armor runes at the start. so you have a clear advantage there. play aggressive and watch out for the jungler. same for top lane you should beable to burn a flash or get a kill at level 3 easilty. if you are going against a talon or khaz mid. you may have a tougher time. but it's all the same. poke agressivly and if they jump to fight you. fight back. that's what the potions are for. specially that fortitude potion.

also ask jungle for blue buff. Dravens blood rush is a real hit to his mana.

Jungling

YES! your favorite adc and mine can infact jungle

The openeer and runes/masteries are obviously changing. summoners are Flash Smite but nonetheless he can infact jungle...

Runes.

Physical damage marks
Armor seals
Physical damage glyphs
Lifesteal Quints

Masteries
Same as before only take one out of magic resistance in defense and put it to smite mastery for the gold

Opener:
I prefer hunters machete 5 health pots. but as draven you don't need the extra damage. cloth armor would also be a very strong start with the lifesteal quints

I prefer the hunters machete start because i don't build a Wrigles or a madreds. i go for spirit of the elder lizard before all else. it gives an amazing amount of AD. + the true damage dot on hit + dravens passive + red buff makes up for alot of poke damage when you walk into a lane or if you cannot finish off a kill

Ganking: i have little to say here as i'm not in the higher up leagues. but in the current silver div 1 league draven has decent ganks. he might not be the fastest movement speed champion. but if you happen to see an over pushed lane or your teams support is pink warding the river. his stand aside makes for exellent cc as it has a nice range and it's a slow + knockback if aimed appropriately.

The lifesteal quints make rushing a spirit of the elder lizard possible with very little gold spent on potions and no need for a vampiric scepter.

After your spirit of the elder lizard Boots 2 (zerker or mobo)a bloodthirster is next on the list. all that's left is to follow the build as if your spirit of the elder lizard was your first bloodthirster. so you'd move on to a last whisper. warmogs and Black cleaver

Draven really can do it all...

Supports

Probably your best bet as a support. when doing draft pick. one. he isn't on the enemy team, which means they get no bonus armor from taric. aswell as he has a nifty stun AND he reduces armor. you can play very aggressive with taric.
Not only do they not have bonus armor but taric lowers their armor. letting you chunk like nobody's buisness.

AGAINST: Probably your worst nightmare. make sure your team picks up a lulu or leona. you can still win this lane, you just need to play smart. alot of tarics will stun you from range so try and pop him with an axe and run away. generally the stun will hit you just in time for you to be standing in your axe's landing zone.

Second best Support in my opinion. Lulu can be played very aggressive and with the added damage from pix ontop of your chunking aswell as a big movement speed buff and a polymorph which renders someone basically useless. she is great to be aggressive with.

AGAINST: lulu is fairly squishy. you shouldn't have much trouble with her in lane depending on her ADC. just watch for poly. and poke her down

Third best support. Leona. A.K.A Stun bot 9000 can do some very nice damage on the adc, and lock the ADC down in place for you to chunk down with axes. very good for aggressive play.

AGAINST: Tough lane. Draven is squishier than he looks, being that she can lock you down and that draven has no real escapes. she can be quite a hand full. play smart and you can still come out with a kill. dodge her E and laugh as you poke her while she trys to flee.

Those are the Top 3 supports. other supports are MEH at best

Worst 3 supports to lane against are Taric, blitz and Thresh followed by leona

probably the fourth best support on dravens side. has wonderful poke just the same as draven. and his Q is a nice lockdown and mediocre pull. he's tanky so he can initiate a brawl bot lane and his ulti is really nice if someone gets caught in it.

AGAINST: Pain in the butt. just like blitz you need to stay behind minions, so it makes aggressive play hard. he pokes pretty hard thanks to his Q and his ulti makes chasing stupid. if you can dodge his Q you basically just got some free poke. but carefull of his E as it will knock you back and his lantern for shielding. stand ontop of his lantern to prevent someone from taking it back to him.

Meh support. he's good when he hits his pulls and gets a knock up. usualy means a kill. but generally does for most adcs. not really the best for aggressive play because if he cant hit a pull then we have nothing.

AGAINST: can't play aggressive against blitz. if you leave minions he has a clear shot pull. + he is very tanky most you can do is hope the ADC gets slightly out of position for you to initiate on

Honorable mentions:

Decent support. can't really initate herself but if she lands a zephyr and a tornado it has some decent CC along with her shield for added chunkability. a moderately aggressive support good for trading. no so much a hard initiation fight untill they are low because of the extra poke.

AGAINST: A squishy support. dodge her tornados and you should beable to chunk her to death along with the adc

Decent support. Like jana dosn't initate. but can keep you healed while dealing some nice poke damage. and giving you some AD. at level 6 you should get a kill with your ultis combined. deals an amazing amount of damage + CC

AGAINST: probably your easiest lane pre-6. sona is the squishiest support atm. just poke her a few times to send her running.

Brothers in arms. Darius support is nice because of the sheer damage output. not really a conventional support lane. and with a small pull range it's not hard to stay out of range of it. but being that it pulls over minions it has it's moments. the dual Bleed lane is also great for escapees with 10 health

AGAINST: Watch out for flash pull and you should be fine. it has a long cooldown so if he misses it just poke him or his ADC.

Annie is actually a really nice support. her burst damage even with support items is phenomenal. + she gets a stun so at level 6. flash tibbers and then a spinning axe + Ignite generally spells death for anyone.

AGAINST: if she dosn't have her stun up in 2 spells you should be poking her. or the adc. the lane is very squishy so you should be fine aslong as annie doesn't have her stun

Like annie, has high burst damage. she also has long range poke and a snare. not the best support but has her moments.

AGAINST: dodge her snare then destroy. her E will slow you so careful of that.

Match ups

Best matchups. if you see this bot lane

With

Any combination of these champions bot lane. makes for an easier time than others. that dosn't mean you counter them entirely. you still have to play to win and play smart. they are just the squishiest of the bunch so you should beable to bully them very very easily

in my opinion. Caitlyn and Corki don't really counter Draven. the range on caitlyn just makes it harder and corki has some intense burst damage. that's why it's only strong when they are combined with someone like taric nunu leona thresh...ect... More supports counter draven than the actual ADC themselves

Final Comments

This is a draven build that has taken inspiration from many different players. and put into one champion, my favorite, draven. While i'm not some plat ranked player. hell i might not even know what i'm talking about here. but all i know is that Draven is my adc. my go to guy. and this is the build i use with him. it has won me and lost me my fair share of games. i hope this guide helps some Draven players out there as it has me

Well this is an Alternate build entirely. yes there are more choices but this guide is not about choices like critical strike or the "vanilla" ADC choices like the Bloodthirstier I.E build most people throw up here for Draven. this focuses on an entirely new itemization for him

I have updated. and will be updating the guide and will re apply for approval after the 7 days. hopefully i can get some videos in by that time

Overall not enough information. The item build section needs a lot of work. There are always a plethora of choices that can be made.

Also, you are completely missing a team fighting section.
