Champion Matchups

Introduction

Welcome to my first guide! This guide will teach you how to play Zed mid lane, which i prefer over zed top or jungle. Many people like to play Zed top and jungle, which is still very good. But for his play style, building him as an AD caster with lots of burst damage, along with AA potential is the best way to go.

Zed is a ninja assassin, and is most useful to pick off high priority targets. Similar to a Hit-Man. This guide will show you how to make the most out of finding the most high priority target, singling him out, and making them explode, quite literally.

Remember, Don't get too frustrated if you don't do well! Zed is a tough champion. He is up there in skill cap with Draven, Lee Sin, Jayce, and Fizz, so many people think he is a bad Champion because they don't know how to play him. Zed is very strong if played effectively, so don't give up! Enjoy the guide!

IF you know the basics of playing Zed, refer to the build order. If you would like to know more about the strategy and play-style behind him, look below for helpful and detailed tips!

UPDATE NOTE
Zed is getting a buff/nerf soon! The BUFF is for and the NERF is for , all the more reason to prioritize the Q!

And remember, if you know your death mark will kill your target, walk away like a bad ass. Cool guys never look at explosions.

Masteries

This masterie page is typical for almost all AD casters. I recommend 21-9-0 with a focus on attack damage, and Defense. Utility masteries are not really needed on zed, and are not nearly as useful as putting your remaining 9 points into Defense.

Runes

The runes can vary slightly from what is stated above. Keep the AD marks, and Armour Seals. If needed, swap the glyphs of scaling magic resist for flat magic resist runes. Besure to run 3 AD quints or 2 AD quints with 1 Armour penetration quint.
To Sum it up:
AD Reds
Flat Armour Yellows
Scaling/Flat MR Blues
AD/Armour pen Quints

Summoner Spells

:
Explanation:Perfect for getting the first blood kill. ALWAYS IGNITE BEFORE DETONATES! This ensures maximum damage. Take flash for escapes.

is not really needed once you have a phage/frozen mallet. Chasing potential is much better, and ghost is not necessary.

Could be useful early, but not needed after laning phase.

Other Masteries are not really needed, is the best choice.

Skills

Passive: Contempt for the Weak Great passive for getting early farm. Almost impossible to miss farm unless you're being zoned hard.

Q: Razor Shuriken Usually max this first. Especially if you are god at hitting skill shots. Great for farming when you are countered and don't want to get close to your laning opponent. Large output of damage, especially when using

W: Living Shadow This is zeds trademark shadow. It mimics all of Zed's abilities along with a few extra perks! It passively gives you extra AD, and if you hit an enemy with the of Zed's shadow, that enemy is slowed. For comboing, i recomend throwing out , slowing the target with , and hopefully landing both . (This is before level 6.) When you have , make sure to immediately throw your shadow for maximum damage.

E: Shadow Slash Many guides say to max this ability first. This is useful if you are top or jungle, but for mid-laning, continue to max first. If you are REALLY BAD at hitting skill shots, you can max first, but I do not recommend it.

R: Death Mark Death mark is Zed's ultimate. It is EXTREMELY useful for picking out single targets who are very high priority. Try to target the enemy's ADC, AP carry, or anyone who does high damage during teamfights. As far as the combo goes, use first, then , and spam .

Remember to listen to the sound of death mark exploding! Your can hear the enemy's bones all collapse at once.

Early Game

On your first recall, you should be able to purchase and after that, make sure to build as your first major item. Followed by your choice of boots, and [imgext=].

Mid Game

By mid game, if one or more of the enemy mid towers are gone, you are pretty much free to roam. Go to lanes that are in need of a gank, while your jungler handles the other lane. Then both you and the jungler can gank mid lane. It's a strategy I've come to like. Since you are Zed, you can farm entire creep waves in one swift move. Just throw down your living shadow, shadow slash, and hit the remaining, already injured minions with two shuriken. You can proceed to do this for two or three lanes or so and then move on to something else. Whether it be stealing enemy jungle, ganking other lanes, or backing to base to buy. This is mainly a strategy if you are ahead. If you are not ahead mid game, consider the following:
  • Slay the dragon
  • Dont forget to farm wraiths!
  • Let the enemy push bot, and gank

Late Game

Late game you should be a supportive player during team fights. As Zed, your job is to take out the highest priority target. An ADC attacking from safety is an example. Generally a squishy ADC such as Kog'Maw will MELT if Zed ult combos him. That is why Zed is perfect for taking out those annoyances.

Also late game, consider back-dooring. Around 350 AD, Zed has enough AD to take out entire minion waves using the combo stated in the "Mid Game" section. You can clear minion waves so fast that the enemy team will not even see you show up on the minimap. Before you know it, your minions are at their tower. If you happen to get caught, you can easily use as an escape over a wall.

Remember, dont forget to get a defensive item!

Final Comments

Zed is a very powerful champion, and best played mid. He is still viable top. Lets recap:
  • Max first, then , , and when available.
  • AD runes, and AD Masteries!
  • Ignite and Flash are the best choice for Summoner Spells
  • ALWAYS FIND THE HIGHEST PRIORITY TARGET!
  • Back door, and be an all around nuisance for the other team.

I hope you enjoyed my first guide, I HIGHLY recommend following this guide by heart, but you can find what works for you. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment, and have fun!

Very nice guide. I also lane mid as Zed, though I've tried every lane with him (lolbotlanezed). I usually replace armor seals with flat ad, use flat mr glyphs, and armpen marks. This set up gives me 12 armpen with 10 ad.

For masteries, I prefer to take the 2.5 from both resists instead of getting any perserverance. Also I rarely get critical strike items so put those points into Summoner's Wrath and 2%AS.

All of this adds up to extreme damage with strong defense against magic damage, while still being able to withstand a bit of physical damage once mid-game rolls around Zed begins roaming more.

Also, counter-jungling if they have a weaker jungle is huge. Pay attention to your jungler's progress (buff spawns, jungler locations, etc.) and, when their jungler tries getting a buff, pop in for a quick kill and free buff. This is obviously a high risk play, but that's what makes Zed so fun.

Just some suggestions. All in all, great guide. :D
