Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hello and welcome to my 4th guide! Thresh, the Chain Warden, is currently on of the most played support chamipons in League of Legends. His INSANE amount of utility and damage is absolutely ridiculous. His natural tankiness makes him an amazing support when paired with nearly any A.D. Carry champion.

Statistics

HEALTH 452 (+89)
ATTACK DAMAGE 46 (+2.2)
HEALTH REGEN. 6 (+0.55)
ATTACK SPEED 0.625 (+1.0%)
MANA 200 (+44)
ARMOR 18 (+0)
MANA REGEN. 5 (+0.7)
MAGIC RES. 30 (+0)
RANGE 475
MOV. SPEED 335

Explained later in the guide, his base armor is not that of a tank's, but his passive, runes, and masteries make up for it.

"Who is RuneHigh?"
I was a Platinum player back in Pre-Season 3. Silver in Season 2, and I got to all of these ranks playing support. I've played support since season one. I took a long-term hiatus from League of Legends after Season 3 began, and I have yet to do my placement matches (lol). I was a part of the team "Lazurah" before they went pro. I decided to leave after LzH Dejester denied me the opportunity to switch to the main-team's support.

When playing a champion, I find it rather key to understand what the champion is about and how he/she/it joined the league and what he/she/it stands for. Thresh is sort of like a grim reaper. His joy comes from torturing his victims and watching them wraith in pain. His past is unknown, except for a few nursery rhymes speaking of a sadistic jailer that relished in the screams and cries of his wards. After a large riot, his wards, without hesitation, hanged him from the same chains used to abuse their friends. His one goal in after-life: Consume every last soul in all of Valoran, and now, the League.

Who works best with Thresh?

I decided to put this section here so you can see if you should even contemplate playing Thresh or not.

If you haven't visited the top of the guide, there is a button that says "Counter Picks". If you click that, there is also a "Partners" section.

Let me preface this section by saying that all of the champions mentioned in this section are extremely viable with Thresh. The rating system is based on my experiences with these champions and how I feel the synergy with them works.

The more a champion has, the better Thresh works with him/her.

Draven and Thresh are like 2 peas in a pod. Where Draven lacks, Thresh makes up, and vice versa. While Draven only has a movement speed steroid, Thresh gives him the extra jump. Their combined damage is pretty crazy as well - 2 auto attacks, plus Draven smacking away = 1 kill.

Miss Fortune(MF) and Thresh are a fantastic combo. The ammount of combined CC between these two is unbelievable! For example, When you cast have MF cast Make it Rain! (the bullet shower thing). The enemy player will HAVE to blow flash, or else you are going to cast your and that's automatically a kill. Her ult plus your's is also something to be feared...

Caitlyn lacks mobility. That simply put, Thresh helps her with this by his . As well as MF, Caitlyn and Thresh have some pretty sick combos as well. Have Caitlyn throw a trap in the bush. You walk into the bush, as Thresh, and use your to pull the enemy into the trap in the bush. Proceed to demolish. This can also work in the opposite direction: enemy gets trapped, Thresh uses .

Any offensive support works well with Graves. If you land your , all Graves has to do is Quickdraw + Buckshot. The rest is self explanatory. You also have your shield with you in case shit hits the fan and you need to get out.

I've never really been a fan of Ezreal, but he does work well with Thresh. Both Ezreal and Thresh have tons and tons of poking potential. If the enemy team is too stubborn to recall to base, Ezreal ults. "An Enemy has been slain."

Masteries

When using :[http://i.imgur.com/JjZ2z5R.jpg]
Explanation

In most cases where you want to be safe and supportive, you are going to want to have 1/13/16 with Exhaust and Flash. In this 1/13/16 build, you get most of EXACTLY what you need for laning and surviving. You'll be able to harass and take harass without many repercussions. You'll also get your bonus gold. This is the same exact mastery page Xpecial uses. He also agrees with me in the fact that "Pickpocket" isn't worth losing the point in "Block".

When using : [http://i.imgur.com/r7ZW5Dj.jpg]
Explanation:

Ignite is REALLY good on Thresh when it comes to early game kills and lane presence. When he combines with champions like and, the bot-lane killing potential rises by tenfold. Switching to a more utility-based page when taking Ignite is almost necessary. Thresh loses an escape when you drop exhaust off. Having the bonus 6% CDR is also really beneficial to harassing, as well as supporting.

Runes

Thresh has so much penitential in the laning phase. With the skill build that I take, you will be focusing on harassing your opponent as much as possible, taking them down with the coordination of you and your jungler/ADC. Taking AD reds would be a surprising factor in the laning phanse. Your opponents would believe you were a simple-minded support, then BAM. First blood. Armor yellows are completely mandatory, being that you are a support. MR blues because you need to protect yourself from possible burst damage from AP carries and other Magic-damage-dealing champions. And gold quintessences because you are a support and you need to be buying as many wards as possible, which is hard to do when you aren't getting any CS.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

In 90% of my games, I will take and. You can never, under ANY circumstances, take flash away. Flash HAS to be there. You only have one other one other escape () and you need the extra escape Flash provides you.

You can easily switch out for . I don't really recommend switching it for anything else besides ignite. Flash + Exhaust/Ignite is the combo that I've taken into all of my games. I might experiment with other options once I play ranked more often.

Skills

Passive: Damnation

Explanation:
Okay. Let's get a few facts straight about before we continue. Thresh does not gain armor and magic resistance per level. Instead, Thresh collects the souls of dead enemies by walking near. Souls permanently grant armor and ability power.

Champions and large minions always drop a harvest-able soul. Small minions only sometimes drop a soul. Your opponents can see dropped souls ONLY IF THEY HAVE VISION OF THRESH. Souls remain on the ground for 14 SECONDS after they are initially dropped. Thresh can also collect souls with if they are in the casting range of the spell.

Q: Death Sentence

Explanation:
The one mistake I find a lot of Thresh players making is that they don't take advantage of this skill at it's early levels. The passive damage scales off of 2 factors:
  • The amount of souls collected.
  • Thresh's attack damage and the amount of time since your last auto attack on enemy/neutral champion or minion.
Besides the insane amount of damage offers, the fact that it's like a hook with movement and a jump is just... When you combo this skill with , you can easily lock your opponent down for ages while your teammate(s) pummel them into the death.

W: Dark Passage

Explanation:
Everyone seems to love to use the lantern. Every. Time. I. Throw. It. Knowing how to use your lantern and the uses of it can make the difference between getting a kill, or getting killed. Also knowing the shield values is extremely key. You can throw it as you are leaving base to help your ADC get to lane faster. You can throw it over a wall to save a fleeing teammate. One of the more, oddly, uncommon uses of Dark Passage is the fact that it gives vision around the area where it lands. Familiarize yourself with its mechanics.

E: Flay

Explanation:
There isn't to much to say about Thresh's E. It has great potential in the fact that it can interrupt many different channeled abilities (i.e, etc.). It can also help aide in your teammates escape in a time of need. As well as these two things, it allows you a brief immobilization. Plenty of time, when combined with your Q to secure a kill.

R: The Box

Explanation:
For the amount of potential Thresh has, his ult seems kind-of underrated. The range away from Thresh isn't that far. The pentagon design is good, but it's too easy to get away from. offers a 99% slow - the highest in the entire game. The damage also is extremely good based on the fact that his gives you free AP.

Skill Order

Debate:
Here is where loads and loads of pro support players begin to debate. "Q is better than W!" "NO W IS BETTER THAN Q" etc, etc, etc. As a general player you have to understand this: Not all skill builds are the same/correct. There is NO SPECIFIC BUILD. There are preferred variations of it, but there is no one CORRECT build. In some cases, you don't need damage at the beginning of the game - max your first. Sometimes, your ADC wants you to harass more than support - max first.

My, USUAL, PREFERRED, skill build is what I have at the top: >>>. I can change this around quite willingly and I do often. I usually will never max first under ANY circumstances - you might want to. I don't recommend it, but you certainly can.

Item Builds

Starting Items (IDEAL): rejuvenation-beadmana-potiontotal-biscuit-of-rejuvinationexplorers-wardsight-ward3health-potion2

This can change to or more s. Just take what your ADC would prefer and/or your jungler.

Rush (NEED TO BUY): sightstoneboots-of-speedphilosophers-stone
MOST THE TIME:aegis-of-the-legion

These are usually the items that you need to focus on getting ASAP. is really self explanatory - 3 free wards and HP. #GG. is for the mana regen mainly, seeing as how you will be constantly buying Health Potions - oh, and GP5. Boots are boots. IS SO FUCKING GOOD OMG. It provides you and your teammates with a plethora of useful stats. This item is of the same importance as Sightstone - a MUST have on every team.

OFFENSIVE: shard-of-true-ice

I rarely get this, but you can get a and it'll be just as good and better for your team. Just look at your team comp. before you buy items past .

DEFENSIVE: locket-of-the-iron-solariranduins-omenbanner-of-command

All of these are REALLY good for loads of defensive stats. Randuins will provide you with HP and an AOE slow (like you don't already have one). You can also get a . That shit's just as good.

BOOTS CHOICES: (IDEAL)ionian-boots-of-lucidity (optional) boots-of-mobilitymercurys-treadsninja-tabi

USUALLY, you'll want . But the other 3 are really good choices based on the situation in the game. You might want to rush if you are having trouble in lane. You could get if the enemy team has a lot of CC. are really good if you aren't having trouble with skill cds, or no pressure from the other team.

ENHANCEMENT OPTIONS (ONLY THESE 2): enchantment-captainenchantment-homeguard

Like, seriously, please only take these 2. You are support for a reason. I recommend in 75% of cases. The other 25% go for . if you're stomping, if you're getting stomped.

IDEAL FINAL: aegis-of-the-legionionian-boots-of-luciditylocket-of-the-iron-solarishurelyas-reverieruby-sightstone AND DEFENSIVE/OFFENSIVE ITEM OF YOUR CHOICE, DEPENDING ON HOW GAME IS GOING.

The main thing to note is that this build is an ideal final build. This is based on a standard, current-meta team comp. You can, and most likely WILL, have to alter your build to cater to the needs of your team. That's how LoL works.

Early Game

oh, and btw, .

Seriously, ward. You start off the game with a free 60s ward; use it to your advantage. Coordinate with your ADC and your jungler and get early game kills and feed your ADC. Let him/her farm and harass your opponent every single chance you get - but be safe. Collect all the souls you possibly can whilst being safe and preserving your cooldown for the necessary moments. Don't spam and waste your mana - your auto attack does enough damage on its own. Use your for ganks and going for kills. Contemplate dragon, and get a on/around the den. Refer to the warding guide I provided for key warding zones.
Feel free to take small Golems if your jungler is fine with it.

Ward Placement

ZOOM IN TO SEE THE WHOLE MAP AND THE "X's"!!!!

THE GREEN X's ARE FOR !

THE PURPLE/GREEN REPRESENT AREAS FOR AND/OR !

THE BLUE X REPRESENTS THE AREA FOR YOUR !

Having proper ward coverage and map awareness is what makes a Gold player into a Diamond player. It's THAT important. Buy a ward; save a life. Pink wards on dragon's lair are useless anytime before 8:00 into the game. Pinks on baron are useless before 23:00. Again, with the whole IDEAL thing. These placements are IDEAL! You might need to place them in the most obscure of places in the whole world. If you do, that's fine. Half of your gold goes to wards anyway.

Mid Game

I consider mid game to start when you have finished building your . Around this time, teamf ights will break out - and I mean the 5v5 ones. (more on team fights in the next section.) You should be pretty tanky by now. You will stick out as a target as well. Keep buying wards during this time and pink baron/dragon as you can. Roam around a little as well, but don't leave your ADC too much. He/she will still need your help until he/she finished a lifesteal and BF item. But you two can roam around the map and gank for kills/assists. Remember to combo your and for tons and tons of CC. Your ult's CD is pretty long, so make sure you preserve it for team fights, or for securing key kills (e.g. mid or top)

Team Fights

Around late/mid-late game, team fights will break out around the map - usually around dragon or baron as one teams contests the objective. YOUR JOB IS TO KEEP THE ADC SAFE. AT ALL COSTS, KEEP HIM/HER SAFE. If that means you have to die and the ADC gets a kill, do it. They are worth more than you and you'll get the assist for helping them. Try to get your ult off before they start to run away so you can get the slow on them and they won't have a chance to flash out of it. If the enemy has an in the fray, make sure your inventory includes a pink ward in case of a team fight. As the fight beings, Akali will more than likely drop her Twilight Shroud and go invisible - DROP YOUR WARD IN THE DEAD MIDDLE OF IT. She won't be able to hide behind that now, but will still get the armor and MR bonus. Remember that you have items with effects. all have really good actives, but what's the point of the active if you don't use it? Stay close to the back AND PROTECT YOUR CARRY AT ALL COSTS.

Late Game

If the game happens to progress to Late Game, you probably are running out of room for wards - which is why we buy the . You shouldn't really need Pink wards anymore, but if you do, go ahead and chip out the gold for . Remember where you belong in team fights throughout the entirety of the game. Baron contests should be beginning around here, or already began. Make sure you tank as much as you can; same goes for dragon. You're still a support and should keep supporting your team - morally and physically.

Video Example

Not the best game I've ever played, but take notice of ward placement, usage of skills, and harassment. I took the wrong rune page, sadly. So my damage was pretty slack. Wards definitely saved my ADC's life and mine on SEVERAL occasions.

Final Comments

Some people will tell you that support is the easiest role to play. In a way, it is. But you also have to remember how much we have to pay attention to and, especially as Thresh, do for the team.

Thresh is, in my opinion, the best support around right now. His extreme versatility and potential in lane is exactly what we've been after in a support-role character.

The main thing that you have to remember as Thresh is that you can make or break a life or death situation. Though annoying sometimes, your lantern is one of the coolest features about Thresh and you need to be sure to utilize it as much as possible.

The ability to adapt under any sort of situation is another breaking factor in a game. You aren't promised the best game every single time you queue. You need to learn to adapt to whatever happens and respond in a positive way.

As I stated in the video, you have to remember that you are playing support. I know it seems odd, but you do forget it sometimes and you try to go balls-deep - just stop. Lol. Remember your position on the team and fulfill it.

I sincerely appreciate you stopping by and looking at my Support Thresh guide :). I did spend a lot of time on this, so some feedback would be much appreciated - positive or negative!
