Introduction

I don't know which bothers me more; the complaints I get in queue when I pick Udyr, or seeing other Udyr's build terribly during his frequent freeweeks, who then proceed to claim that Udyr is worthless. Udyr is one of my favorite characters; I am of the belief that many people build him incorrectly. My goal with Udyr is not to carry; it's to force the enemy to choose between focusing a tank or getting constantly stunned by his bear form. The beauty of the character is that he doesn't need much gold to do this; he just needs enough to get somewhat tanky. This is my first guide, so please, tell me what it is you need from me to make this useful.

Pros:
  • High natural damage
  • Great jungle clear once Wriggles is acquired
  • Great counterjungler (Udyr's very difficult to fight 1v1)
  • No ult or long cooldowns means Udyr is always ready to fight
  • Drops towers quickly
  • Surprisingly good at escaping bad situations (, , repeat)

Cons:
  • Easily kited
  • Mana must be carefully managed without blue buff, slowing his jungle clear
  • Useless if not tanky
  • No poke; because he's all auto-attacks, Udyr has to either be all-in, or not doing any damage

Masteries

0/21/9 is pretty standard on most junglers, and really requires very little explanation. Going 21 into the Defensive tree really helps make becoming tanky easier. I chose the tenacity that's offered further into the tree because Udyr is worthless if he gets kited. The 9 points in the Utility tree will give Udyr a little more mana to help his jungle clear, a little extra movement speed when out of combat to help him gank, and prolong the duration of buffs.

Runes

Attack speed runes on Udyr is for obvious reasons; he's all auto-attacks, and nothing else will do as much to help his jungle clear. It's especially helpful for procing Wriggles more often. The movement speed quints will help reduce his vulnerability to kiting and making ganking easier. The armor is standard for junglers, and the scaling MR is to give a little help surviving late-game, seeing as the build has very little magic resist.

Skills

Passive: Monkey's Agility

Explanation: Make's Udyr tankier and gives him more attack speed; when mana isn't a concern, I'll typically start a jungle camp in Turtle Stance, then switch to Tiger as soon as possible in order to immediately get two stacks of this passive going.

Q: Tiger Stance

Explanation: Gives Udyr a great amount of damage without needing to build any; the attack speed boost is also useful for taking towers quickly.

W: Turtle Stance

Explanation: Gives Udyr a great amount of sustain. Seeing as crits aren't a part of this build, the fact that turtle stance can't crit isn't really a concern. The mana and life-steal allow Udyr to stay in the jungle indefinitely; the shield has the same effect, and is also great for getting out of lost fights, as well as blocking tower shots when it'd be easier to just walk through a tower than go around. I also use it to clear things such as Cait traps and Teemo shrooms for my team.

E: Bear Stance

Explanation: The CC and movement speed buff given from this are crucial to Udyr being useful. The extra movement speed makes him frustrating to chase or be chased by, and the stun can be used to disable entire teams during team fights, as well as set up unfair ambushes. I typically wait til level 4 to put a point in. However, this is only because I often wait til level 4 to gank; bear stance should be leveled once you plan to start showing up in lanes.

R: Phoenix Stance

Explanation: This is many people's go-to for jungle Udyr, because of the AoE. However, with the way the health has been distributed among the jungle creeps, AoE really isn't that important anymore; Tiger Udyr's clear time is fine. That isn't to say that Pheonix Stance isn't good, I just believe Tiger is better. A point may be considered before level 16 if pushing becomes crucial, because it is great for waveclearing.

Item Builds

I used to start on Tiger Udyr, and I maintain that it's great if you can get some early kills with it. However, this guide isn't made for Udyr to carry, but instead for him to be a tank and a constant cc-machine. is really the best way to go, because will make Udyr's jungle clear insane.

On my first recall, I typically buy . will vastly improve Udyr's jungle clear, and the is necessary because without a gap closer, Udyr is dependent on his movement speed to gank. The serves one specific purpose; to steal the enemies blue buff (this will be covered in greater detail in "Gameplay").

Next, I typically build , because doing so will allow you to solo dragon at level 6 (this will be covered in "Gameplay"). However, if you're ganking frequently, will be great to help you close gaps quickly. can also be useful, but I prefer in order to reduce Udyr's vulnerability to being kited.

Next, build a , and build it into a . The health, CDR and armor will make you much more resilient, and the active allows you to help your teammates when ganking or in team fights. A well used Locket shield can turn a death in your bot lane into a double kill very easily.

Next, . I'm not sure if I really even need to explain why one should build a ; it's the go-to for getting tanky. It is, however, very expensive. If you find yourself behind, and needing to complete an item quickly to keep up, a may be better to buy in its place because it can be completed quicker, will give you some health and the passive will work well with the lifesteal from and .

After completing , your main items are done, and the others should be dependent on what you need. For example, if you're in a situation where you can chase and fight individual enemies, will be great; it provides a pretty massive amount of health, and makes escaping from Udyr impossible. has a similar effect; while it doesn't give the same tankiness, it gives a lot of extra damage, and will make escaping from Udyr almost unthinkable. If your team doesn't have an , then build one, but hopefully someone on your team has completed it before lategame. This responsibility doesn't rest purely on the shoulders of your support; you may have to change up your build to include an if you have a support it wouldn't make sense on ( and being great examples) or if you need it sooner than your support can build it.

Gameplay

Here's a few things that I do very frequently with Udyr.

Stealing blue:Place the ward you buy during your first back at the enemies blue buff before the 7:00 mark, and then just wait for one of several things to happen. If the enemy jungler ganks a lane that you can't get to in time to help, take their blue buff while your have vision of them. If the enemy jungler attempts to give their blue buff to their mid, use the vision your ward grants you to steal it with smite. If the enemy jungler keeps it for themself, and you can take them in a 1v1 (which, in most situations, you can), then ambush them.

Soloing Dragon: Once you are level 6 and have , you're reading to solo the dragon. Be sure to inform your team of what you're doing, and pay attention to mid and bot lane; if anyone leaves, you should consider yourself in danger. Use the from to ward the enemy jungler's most likely entrance to the river (if you're blue team, the ramp leading from their blue buff; if you're purple team, the ramp leading from their wraiths or the small bush near the ramp). At this point, as long as you pay attention to the map, you should be able to kill the dragon quickly, safely, and without taking much damage.

Counterganking: As a jungler, you can often tell when somebody is about to get ganked. They're pushing towards the enemies tower and the enemy jungler has been out of sight for awhile. At this point, instead of pinging for your teammate to fall back, there's another option; wait for the enemy jungler to show up, and take him out. As said, Udyr can fight most enemy junglers 1v1 pretty easily, and if you let your teammate know what's about to happen, it can be a very easy kill, if not double kill. You simply need to wait in whatever bush you think the enemy jungler is going to enter in , stun them immediately before they enter, switch to , and watch their health drop.
