Champion Matchups

Introduction

Nasus has become more popular after his recent buffs to his ultimate and Siphoning Strike. This will look mainly at jungle Nasus, whose power was shown by Diamondprox in the LCS and IEM global finals, and picked up by many other players including hyrqBot of SK Gaming. Nasus is also picked by top laners like HotshotGG for his powerful scaling damage and utility.

Strengths

Nasus’s main strength is his Wither. When maxed, it’s a 5 second movement and attack slow that goes from 35% up to 95% over time, making it almost impossible for the affected champion to walk anywhere or even auto attack. It has 700 range (800 when he ults) and the cooldown can reach 6.6 seconds with 40% CDR, which gives it only a 1.6 second downtime. In addition to his amazing slow, he has an AoE armor shred with Spirit Fire that instantly lowers armor by 40. Combine this with an ultimate that gives him AoE %max health damage, AD, and bonus health, with an auto attack reset with decent scaling damage and you have a very formidable lategame threat. The old problems with Nasus were twofold, one his lane phase was always weak and two he was too susceptible to kiting. With the increased Wither range while in ult and jungle Nasus’s ability to get double stacks on Siphoning Strike when killing a large camp mob, these problems become much less relevant.

Skills

Passive: Soul Eater

Explanation:Nasus drains his foe's spiritual energy, giving him a natural 14 / 17 / 20% lifesteal.

Q: Siphoning Strike

Explanation:Active: Nasus' next attack within 10 seconds will deal additional damage. Siphoning Strike permanently gains 3 stacked damage whenever it kills an enemy. This bonus is doubled to 6 stacked damage if the enemy killed by Siphoning Strike is a champion, big monster or big minion.
Physical Damage: 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 (+ 100% AD) (+3 [+6] per enemy killed by Siphoning Strike)

W: Wither

Explanation:
Active: Nasus ages his target, slowing their movement and attack speed by 35%. An additional slowing effect increases over 5 seconds. If the duration of Wither is reduced, the added slowing effect is applied faster.
Slow over 5 seconds from 35% to: 47% / 59% / 71% / 83% / 95%

E: Spirit Fire

Explanation:Active: Nasus unleashes a spirit flame at a target location, dealing magic damage to enemies caught in the area. The spirit flame burns for 5 seconds afterwards, dealing magic damage each second and reducing the armor of enemies within the area.

Initial Magic Damage: 55 / 95 / 135 / 175 / 215 (+ 60% AP)
Magic Damage Per Second: 11 / 19 / 27 / 35 / 43 (+ 12% AP)
Total Magic Damage: 110 / 190 / 270 / 350 / 430 (+ 120% AP)
Armor Reduction: 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40
Diameter of AoE: 800

R: Fury of the Sands

Explanation:Active: Nasus summons a sandstorm to empower himself for 15 seconds, gaining bonus health, 50 bonus attack range, and 100 bonus cast range.

While the storm rages, nearby enemies take magic damage equal to a percentage of their maximum health (max of 240 magic damage per second per enemy). Nasus converts 6.375% of the damage done by the sandstorm into bonus attack damage for himself.
Health Gained: 300 / 450 / 600
Max Health to Magic Damage Ratio Per Second: 3% / 4% / 5% (+ 1% per 100 AP)
Total Max Health to Magic Damage Ratio: 45% / 60% / 75% (+ 15% per 100 AP)
Total Magic Damage Possible (to a single enemy): 3600
Total Bonus Attack Damage Possible (from a single enemy): 229.5
Diameter of AoE: 350

Masteries

Goes for 9/21/0 masteries for more tank stats and more powerful ganks. Along with the armor shred of Spirit Fire the 8% armor penetration allows for Nasus’s damage to become relevant through the game.

Runes

Mostly defensive runes, taking attack speed marks, armor seals, flat magic resist or scaling magic resist or a mixture of flat and scaling magic resist glyphs, and movement speed quintessences.

Item Builds

As with most junglers, Nasus starts with a Hunter's Machete and 5 Health Potions, which transitions into an early Spirit Stone. Diamondprox opts to take a more defensive and utility focused build, going for aura tank items like Locket of the Iron Solari and Runic Bulwark if relevant in the situation, along with either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads. He also chooses, interestingly, to get a Crystalline Flask. This gives him access to free mana and health potions every time he recalls, which allows him to stay and farm the jungle more and have enough mana to contribute to team fights. After the basic team defensive auras, Diamond goes for full tank items such as Randuin's Omen, Warmog's Armor. Eventually, upgrade the Spirit Stone into either a Spirit of the Ancient Golem or even Spirit of the Elder Lizard.

Skill Order

While many people who play Nasus enjoy maxing Siphoning Strike to gain the maximum possible stacks, Diamondprox opts to max Siphoning Strike last. The move heavy utility focus brings Nasus into more of a supportive role than a carry bruiser, which fits better into Gambit Gaming's playstyle. Diamond takes 1 point into Siphoning Strike at level 1 just to start stacking it on the large monsters of camps for the double stacks on large mobs. He then maxes Spirit Fire for extra armor penetration as well as jungle clear speed. Next he maxes Wither for better ganks and utility. He also takes Fury of the Sands when available.

Team Fights

Nasus’s ult allows him to tank through more damage than he seems like he is able. Along with stopping an AD carry with Wither, he is very hard to kill. Alternatively to shutting down an AD carry, wither is used to help peel for your AD carry by putting it on whoever is diving them. Usually Nasus is able to zone away the enemy team even out of the jungle due to the low damage coming from the AD carry. Getting down Siphoning Strike and Spirit Fire on valuable targets will quickly remove them from a fight. Usually Nasus has trouble engaging on the enemy, but combining Ghost, the range increase with Fury of the Sands, and Wither will allow him to get on a valuable target that may have been out of position. Diamond usually chooses to zone away the AD if it does not put him too far out of position, otherwise using Wither to disengage and peel.
