Champion Matchups

Introduction

Darius is one of those champions that everyone either thinks he is overpowered and hard to run from or underpowered and too easy kite. In the end, both of those are true, it is up to the player to decide what he is. Darius will either snowball till late game or he will fall off and never recover, he will almost never be in between For the most part though, Darius is normally only seen in top lane unless he is trolling a team or doing something no one thought he could do, like go mid lane. I will tell you right now, this guide is a LEGITAMATE GUIDE TO MID LANE Darius. I can guarantee that you will receive a lot of shit if you try doing mid lane Darius, but it works about 80% of the time, depending on your teammates (I'm assuming they don't feed or they can play their roles without causing you too much trouble). Please note that I am NOT a gold or higher ranked player, BUT I have been able to successfully use this build in games against people WHO ARE gold or higher.

I decided this needed its own Paragraph: Whatever you do, DO NOT RAGE. As soon as you rage you can kiss your win goodbye, you will win most of your games by not criticizing your team. Try to keep team morale up by making jokes about doing Darius mid. If you do well you will make them believe in you and make the game much easier to win.

As a side note, no one has commented or left any reviews, so I don't know what people think of this guide. If you can give me some feedback, that would be great, though it helps to mention why you hate the guide if you dislike d-.-"b.

Starting Items

Here are some starting items that are near essential, each is good for a different situation.

1.: To be honest, I don't use this starting build very often because I find it doesn't really help kill all that much (for most mids). This is more for if you plan on ganking other lanes often and early to secure kills. It helps a bit for killing the enemy in lane, but really only get this if you need help closing the gap or running from a gank. This is really only viable for games with a skill cap of Silver III and lower.

2.: This is my preferred start. I picked this one up after playing with my friend, thehappypumpkin, who has recently been beating Diamond I players. This provides good sustain and decent vision, so staying in lane longer is easy. A trick I picked up was placing the ward on either the top or the bot of the lane and staying on the side you warded, this helps prevent ganks.

To be honest, go with whatever fits your play style, these are just basic builds that work 50% of the time.

Masteries

Explanation:

For the most part, everyone knows that Darius has a lot of damage if he can get to you, which is why ranged characters with a lot of CC are often picked to counter him. The masteries that are shown above are to lower the effects of CC enough where you can get to them while they are stopped for a brief moment to cast a spell or auto attack. The reason behind only 9 points into the offensive mastery tree is because Darius already does a decent amount of damage with his Q and his passive, so anything after that is not necessary, however, you NEED the 21 points into the defensive mastery tree in order to reduce the amount of damage you take and lower the effects of CC.

If you don't like these, take what you want, these are mostly based on preference.

Runes

Explanation:

Honestly, any Physical Damage or Magic Resist runes will do. I personally prefer getting the 9 flat Attack Damage Marks and 3 Attack Damage Quintessence because I find that helps deal the most damage considering most mid players only buy Ability Power Runes, making them really squishy. You want Flat Armor seals because they help you if get basic attacked or ganked by an AD champion. As for the scaling magic resist, I prefer those because like most other champs, Darius doesn't have scaling magic resist and it helps a lot when going against AP champs (its good the whole game because you already start off with a decent amount of magic resist from the masteries).

These are mostly for early game, getting armour penetration marks will help you a lot more in late game.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

Darius doesn't have that many escapes and so is pretty much standard with him. I prefer to pack just so I can make sure I can get kills early game and then snowball into late game. If that doesn't happen, it helps with taking out people with a lot of sustain and making sure the damage you deal stays. If you know you are going to be needing to gank lanes a lot, or need to that extra boost of speed to run away, grab instead of .

I have also experimented with a couple of other spells like , ,[ imgsmall=summoners/heal.png], , and , but most are only good for specific kinds of play styles.

and : Status: Not Recommended
I don't suggest getting these because most people who play mid will still be out of range and able to kite you even if you pop them.

: Status: By Preference
This is more for the people who like to rush the lane, or make a random gank at bot or top lane, other than that, there is no other use for this spell so I don't use this often.

: Status: Viable
This is a more viable than most of the other spells because paired with , it will make it very difficult to escape from you.

: Status: Situational/By Preference
If you are one of those people who love just spamming you skills and don't want to wait for your mana to regen, take this, it can be useful, but only if you stay in lane long enough to utilize it.

: Status: Situational
You really only need to get this if you are afraid of being locked down by enemy CC. Other than that it is preference.

Skills

Passive: Hemorrhage

Explanation:

Rule number 1: Never depend on this for securing a kill.
Compared to other champs who have good DoT (Damage over Time) like or , this is only a pin prick. You will almost NEVER get full stacks of this on anyone unless you are facing someone who refuses to run. The only time you will ever need to worry about this is when you are deciding when you want to finish off the enemy with your .

Q: Decimate

Explanation:

This skill is Darius's main skill that is used for almost everything. You want to get and max this first because it can deal damage at a decent range, for a melee character, and it is AOE. Through out the whole game, use this to poke and harass the enemy champ, most people who go mid are very easy to kill, so getting hit by this once or twice will force them to pop a or just flat out kill them.

W: Crippling Strike

Explanation:

The reason why you don't get this after you get your is because this is short range. When you are going mid you will almost never be able to run up to them and hit them, so this is useless unless you are pushing the lane, you them to you, or they are a melee champ who is stupid enough to get close to you. You want to get this up second though because it is the only non-ultimate damage skill Darius has besides and . In addition, if you activate this skill after a basic attack, it allows for a second hit to be done in quick succession. I don't really care for its passive cooldown because I don't find it very viable for killing unless you are taking out dragon or baron. On the rare occasion you can though, utilize it as much as you can and chunk out whoever has full stacks first because the cooldown of this skill is about the same as the cooldown for and you will do about 3x the amount of your basic attacks.

E: Apprehend

Explanation:

This is Darius's key to winning mid lane. is going to be the only way you will ever be able to deal damage to the enemy champion. Make sure to memorize its range and how long they are stunned for when you pull them because this will save you many times. If you miss your pull, chances are you will be harassed like there's no tomorrow so don't waste it and wait for the perfect moment to pull them in. You only need to have this skill because the only thing upgrading it will do is reduce its CD and your passive armor penetration (which you should already have a decent amount of). One last note: This is also technically a miniature knock-up because when you pull them in, they can't do anything for a brief moment, so use this to nullify some skills or stun them for a little bit if they decide to go head on against you.

R: Noxian Guillotine

Explanation:

Darius's signature move that everyone knows him for. Due to the nerf, it is not as effective and fun as it used to be, but it is still deadly and useful when it's used right. The problem with most people who play Darius is that they think they should only use this in order to kill someone, and/or wait for full stacks, WRONG. Yes, this skill shouldn't be wasted, but sometimes it is necessary to use this skill to chunk down someone really quickly and then finish them off with basic attacks and other skills while they are running away. With the nerf, it doesn't matter if you use it like this or not because either way it is going to go onto CD after it is used. It is better to get one kill and have no ultimate for a minute and a half, than die without accomplishing anything.

Item Builds

Explanation:

Darius's builds are all about situation, however, the core items are amazing with him because they allow him to just run through all of the CC and chunk out anyone who gets too close. Anything else you buy after the core items will just depend on the situation.

Core Items: You want to get because of the tenacity added on and movement speed. is just good overall because of the added on damage from Sheen, the extra health and slow from Phage, and the extra movement speed from Zeal. This item will allow to run, chunk people out, and push towers. has both damage, armor shred, and health, all the things Darius needs. If you are trying to secure kills for some one like the ADC or are trying to kill a tank, this item will allow to so, and when stacked with , it makes it really easy to see how much of their armor has been shred and show who the ADC should target.

I know that most of the items don't counter AP Champions, but for the most part you can still tank the APC damage even without Magic Resist. I have talked to several people about what to stack for MR (Silver I-Platinum III players), but none of them seem to believe in stacking it in the first place, so getting a little is good, but don't focus on getting it too much because you will most likely have problems with AD champs late game.

Example Endgame Build:

Champions to Watch Out For and How to Deal with Them

; Difficulty: Medium: She can deal a lot of damage and her stun can be deadly. To fight her, just make sure to count her spells and attack her when she goes in for farm or gets too close

; Difficulty: Hard: He can get too much range on Darius and as soon as he hits level 6, its GG unless you are snowballing hard and can take his hits. I haven't found a way to fight him because I have only faced two of them, but I will update if I figure anything out

; Difficulty: Easy: Don't let her get farm and harrass and you will probably be fine. Most people who play her can't play her well, but if they do just poke as much as you can while avoiding her poison.

; Difficulty: Medium to Hard: Stay out of the way of his shurikens(throwing stars) and his marks of the storm and you will be fine. If he starts building AD Kennen, make sure he doesn't stun you or you will die very quickly.

; Difficulty: Medium: Only faced a few, just watch out for her burst and poke her as much as you can. Don't pull her if she has her jump back skill otherwise she will get the advantage.

; Difficulty: Medium to slightly Hard: The only thing you have to watch for is her glowing ball, that should be the only thing you should have to worry about. Her restrain shouldn't be too much of a problem unless you run from your minions, so stay behind the minions until you see a way to get her.

; Difficulty: Stone Wall Yorick: Only seen him a couple of times, but almost every single time he will beat you whether its a head on fight or just harassing eachother. Try to poke him and keep him as low as you can without letting him play too passive, have your jungler gank as often as you can. Just as his name implies, he is a stone wall which few can beat.

;Difficulty: Really Easy or Really Hard: Range and stun, he will either be one of the easier champs to face or one of the harder ones. Make him waste his mana and attack him when he has little or no mana left.

; Difficutly: Hard: I have faced many and only won and lost equal amounts. All I have to say is play smart, don't be stupid, and don't let her snowball and you will win lane. What I mean by that is don't let her farm and get harrass off, if she harrasses, harrass back and force her out of the lane, or play passive until your jungler ganks or you can pull her into tower range.

; Difficulty: Extremely Hard: 4 words, Out ranged and Out damaged. She can easily hold her own against you if she can hit you with her combo. Try to stay ahead of her in damage and health and avoid her stun and you may have a chance. That is all I can say, if I find a more effective method, I will post it up.

; Difficulty: Medium: Try not to take too many hits from him and you should be fine. If you keep up the pressure on him and keep him around half you should be fine, just watch out for his stun or things can go from great to really bad fast.

Another ?; Difficulty: Easy-Medium: Almost never see this unless its a normal game and they think the APC and bruiser are switching lanes. If this happens just switch lanes to go against APC and keep doing that till they decide to just face you or give up. You will tend to have more damage than him making his normal tanky-chaser build useless because you can deal a lot more damage than him. Why I mentioned this, I don't know, because most people think you are retarded going Darius mid.

Final Comments

This is just my personal build and opinions, and it is still a work in progress. If you have any suggestions or questions about the build and/or how to make this guide better, feel free to comment and let me know (please note that it may take a while because I can't be on 24/7). Remember, people will think you are a troll unless you get them to believe. Ones they believe, you most likely win the game. Keep dunking and have fun. Thank you.
