Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hello gentlemen. Welcome to my Lissandra guide.

About me: I'm just your regular player, currently playing around silver 3-1, and still relatively new to this game. Altho this is not impressive, I think I know quite a bit about the game already.

About Lissandra: As a new champion, I think I ought to say my opinion about her. I don't think she's op, I actualy think she's nearly balanced to perfection, and any nerfs/buffs coming her way will make her underpowered or overpowered, in my humble opinion. She is a cc machine, has great kiting potential, quite decent poker, quite decent burster, quite decent mobility. To trade off for this, she has really low ranges on her spells(wich isn't very good for an ap carry), and quite low ratios(again, for an ap carry). She also has some skillcap, has 2 of her spells are skill shots, and the other two are close to that.(she's not as hard as syndra or orianna, but probably in the stage right below)

So in my opinion, she can be compared alot to Elise. (in the sense that she can be played either top or mid and should be built more of an "ap-bruiser", not in her mechanics wich are very different)

Why Lissandra top too?
Well, first of all: I also suggest Lissandra top for a simple reason: I think that her kit can really abuse close ranged champions. And alot of the cast at the top lane are those. I wouldn't reccomend using Lissandra at the top lane against the likes of tho. I mean, think of Elise. You already build yourself pretty tanky either way, and your Q is a really good harass tool. Other than that, all your skils are great for kiting, so if you get a bit ahead, I can see you even winning trades 1v2 when the enemy jungler comes. But still, I have not tested her as intensively as I did in midlane, so most of the guide will be about her midlane. Altho I pretty much build her the same way, the only big difference is the lane gameplay.(one last time, think )

So lets get this going shall we.

Masteries

Well, not much to say here. Pretty standard ap mid masteries. Thanks to her passive you can harass quite a bit in early game, so going down the offense tree makes sense. I was considering going a bit in utility to increase her kiting ability and sustain, but because of her close range I think the defense tree is important.

Altho I will still try some different masteries, and update later if I find anything that seems better.

Runes

Again pretty standard runes for an ap caster. I don't think there's not much to change here. Other runes options might be ability power/mana regen seals, and ability power/cdr glyphs.
But I think the ones listed at start are the best.

At start I show armor seals, that's because I would pick them if I was going top vs ad/mid against ad. If I'm pretty sure I'm facing an ap champion, I'll usualy switch to the runes in the screenshot above. Changing the armor seals to ability power per level. It's really up to you, I prefer this little extra kick in damage.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
One more time, pretty standard.

- Ignite is always really important, and very useful thruout the game.

- Altho her gives her good mobility, it is on a big cooldown for most of the game, and not as realiable as say Playful/Trickster, to consider trading the Flash for something else.

Other summoner spells to consider:
- If nobody in your team has it, you might consider this. You will loose some trading/kill potential, but as Lissandra that's okay. Will make you able to gank other lanes better, or just help you get ahead in a hard lane by always being there. Very viable, mostly in the top lane. The reasoning is that toplane is a very snowballing lane. If you get killed soon into the game for some reason, you can use this spell to keep yourself in the game and try to recover fast. Also, as top is very far from the biggest early-mid game objective(dragon) its good to be able to instantly go and make a big play around it. Always remember that if your enemy has another summoner spell, he probably is in an advantage in an all-out fight, so choose your trades wisely.

- Still testing. But this would make you the ultimate kiting machine. Might be good, but still need to test it further.

Skill Order

>>>
R>Q>W>E.
Quite simple:

Maxing ultimate is a given in 99%/100% of the champions.(yes, I'm looking at you )

By maxing Q it becomes quite spammable, the slow is great to kite(mostly at the top lane) and using the shards via minions is a great harass.

Now between W and E. The thing about W is that it's reliable damage(alot of times you use E to escape/gap close without hitting any opponents) plus by maxing it you increase the snare duration. So imo it goes first.

Skills

Passive: Iceborn

Explanation:
Really nice passive early game. Later in the game it's quite unnoticeble.

This passive shows it's "greatness" right at leashing to the jungle. You can hit all the wolves/wraiths not wasting mana, then you can also hit the red/blue buff for decent damage without wasting mana again(you'll probably have to wait 1-2 secons tho.)
After that, in lane, it's quite awesome, as you get to keep your mana really high at all times if you use it wisely. Just keep checking it's timer, and everytime you have your passive up, try to aim some Q shards thru minions. In the top lane, as most enemies are close ranged this is quite easy to achieve. Keep in mind that by doing this you will be pushing your lane, so don't do it when you don't have a ward and want to keep yourself save.
When the passive is on cooldown, try to refrain from harassing too much unless you really need to. I mean, if you have full mana, go ahead and drop an easy Q if the oportunity arises, then keep playing with your passive cooldown. This way, everytime your jungler comes you have near full mana, so you are always ready to pull a play off. This also aplies for when the enemy comes to gank you, if you use your passive you'll never be oom to make your escape or pull some crazy stunt. = )

Q: Ice Shard

Explanation:
Really nice skill. At max rank it has 4 seconds cooldown, and if you get or blue buff it goes down to 3. Pretty spammable, the shards make it a good harass skill in lane, and the slow gives you a really good kiting ability.

W: Ring of Frost

Explanation:
Awesome skill aswell, also adds up to your kiting ability. It has many uses, you can use it to escape/peel for teammates, you can also make engages with this together with your E. The range is a bit small, so in lane you'll pretty much only use it when your jungler comes/escaping enemy jungler or going in for the kill.

E: Glacial Path

Explanation:
Great skill, very unique. The max range is quite amazing, and the projetile speed isn't THAT bad. This skill makes Lissandra(imho) the best laner in terms of gank synergy. Basicly you pop this on when jungler is about to show up, pop again when your in rage for your W, and then hit a Q. This will 99% result either in flash burned or a kill, or both.

Also, when escaping, you can play alot of mind games. You can try to force enemies into flashing(kinda like Phreak does in the spotlight) or just throw it to one side and run to the oposite. If they follow you, you just reclick and you are very far away now. If they follow your skil, just keep walkin'!

R: Frozen Tomb

Explanation:
Another great skill. The free zhonias really comes in handy, and when you have you can pull off sick plays.
In my opinion this is the hardest skill to get a hang off in Lissandra. Deciding wether to use this on your or the enemy can be quite tricky sometimes. Also, it's range is really small(in my opinion is the only thing that might be kinda "underpowered" in her). Altho it makes you invulnerable on self cast, sometimes stunning a high priority target or peel for your carry is more important.
This is a risky statement, but I believe that after you get zhonias, you might aswell use this for the stun.(unless ofc your really fed and carrying yourself)

Item Builds

Here we go:

I usualy start because it allows you to stay in lane quite awhile.

Altho I believe a start like if you manage to use your passive to perfection.

Also the old might still be good against heavy skill-shottas like .

From there it really depends alot on the game. If things somehow are not going great, I tend towards building either or the .

Either way, your goal early game is finishing your asap. I favor building "tanky-ap" items on Lissandra because her scalings aren't so strong, and her skills range are quite small. You tend to be quite near the middle of the fray most of the times, so some tankiness comes in handy.

.
The Twin Shadows is a nice item imo. The extra mov speed and active will increase your kiting potential quite alot, it also gives you an extra niche of utility. I usualy go for this, also you can try to rush the kage pick early, making this item coming off a bit cheaper by the time you finish it. Even without this "trick", this item is really cost-efficient.

After this I usualy get . This item is quite good in the current meta, especialy on Lissandra. The magic penetration does wonders nowadays, a bit more hp is always apreciated, and the passive is very good in the league of warmogs. Lissandra Q applies slow to the first hit, so it deals the double passive damage, all hit by her W are hit likewise, and her ultimate aswell. Only her E won't do the double damage per-se, but alot of times you won't even be hitting this skill anyway. This item is also great for kiting champions, and as you already have the kiting potential, it works well.

Then, I believe it's a choice between and .
I find myself going towards Zhonyas most of the time. Maybe because I havn't tested rabadon's as much, I don't know. But I think that, because of her weak scalings, going the more tankier and utility item will be better most of the cases. Also, if the enemy has the "new meta" all ad team, don't forget to rush this even before or right after your catalyst.
Attention: I'm saying you have to choose between these two because I'm assuming you'll build a , because by the time you'll finish your build there should be atleast two enemies with more than 100 Magic Resist. If this is not the case, go ahead and get both Rabadon's and Zhonias.

I think the other good items to consider are pretty self-explanatory.(like void staff, mag pen op)

I usualy build this one. It is very very good, as you'll basicly be everywhere very fast. If you are loosing the game, this enchantment is a must, as it helps ALOT defending the base. If you are really winning, it is still good, but maybe a might be better.

Very good item. Been playing with it recently. It's quite cheap(you also can buy kage's pick early, making it even cheaper) and as I said sometimes.. I love the CDR. After you get the RoA the mana regen is not really needed, but dat ap and cdr.. Really good. If you feel you won't need the mag resist/utility from , or you want more AP/damage, this is definitly the right choice. Furthermore, its passive is quite the thing to piss off healing-reliant champions. If somehow the enemy has a comp with some of those champions, please counter them with this.(like , , , , , , , )

Another item that simply isn't core imo because you don't really need to pay for the mana regen. The Athene will give you some, quite precious, CDR, and (not as much needed) mana regen(not the mention the obvious ap). It also gives a bit more ap than while still givin you some magic resist. If you somehow feel you need some more mana regen, go for it. Together with the RoA, you will NEVER run out of mana.

Really good item. The aura might help your team, and certainly helps you, stacking with the mpen from both your boots and liandrys. If you have double ap lane, are vs more than 1 ap damage dealer and your other laner won't build it, I'd probably trade it off Twin Shadows. I prefer Twin Shadows in the other games because of it's great cost efficiency, and the high kiting ability/utility it gives, but Abyssal Scepter just gives you more trading power(against other ap obviously) while also helping your team's overall ap damage.

Most of the games stay away from(items that might seem tempting, but probably are not optimal):

It usualy is built together with Liandrys, but you already have in-built slow on Q, your W is an aeo snare, and ulti is aoe slow already. I don't think the stacking slow is worth the cash, and you can get the hp from RoA anyway.

I have sometimes looked at this item when faced against full ad teams. It might seem tempting, but it's just not there. If you really really wanted more armor, wich you probably won't need, I believe you'd better go crazy and get a , altho I mostly advice you not to, unless you're toplane.

This item seems pretty tempting. Sometimes during teamfights I've used all my skils, and that auto-atack empowered with a lich bane between Q's seems, like I said, tempting. But I don't think it's worth it. I will test it and make sure, but in theory, you're not getting enough ability power to make this viable. Also, since the magic resist has been removed, it doesn't fit this "tanky" build. Once again, if someone finds this item worth it on Lissandra please correct me, but I really believe it's not.

General gameplay

So, as for mid lane:

Generaly you want to play it safe. Focus on farming, and harass with your passive thru minions. Try not to waste your E, always save it either to escape or to work out ganks with your jungler. Warn your jungler that you can synergize very well with ganks. When he's about to show up, start your E to get in range to hit your W. Do it, and then use your Q, try to hit the slow. By this time your jungler had plenty of time to get in range to throw in his kit to the mix, wich will most likely result either in a flash or kill or both. If you have ulti, this just becomes way more deadly. I've been finding that you cannot win a full blown fight vs most of the meta cast right now. Not until around level 9-11 atleast. But during mid-late game teamfights, you end up being alot more useful/powerful than most. That's why I think you should play it safe(quite easy as Lissandra) farm as much as you can, gank other lanes whenever you have the chance, and wait for your jungler to come do plays.

If your enemy is close ranged, like Fizz or Gragas, try to abuse him when he goes to farm. Altho if it's Fizz keep your distance, as he is pretty deadly once he gets in range. (even tho you still have your very reliable W to take care of those situations) So, in these kinds of matchups, I advice going a bit more agressive, and try to harass alot with Q until they're around near half hp. If this happens, you can try a full combo of E>W>Q>R and will probably result in a kill.

Lissandra is one of the hardest champions for the enemy jungler to gank aswell, on par with champions like or . Just start running back to your turret, and wait until they have used their gap closer. (for example, if it's -the recently very popular- , wait until he starts running with his throwback on, when he's in rage for your use it. After that you probably won't even need to use , and just walk away without a problem. Anyway, just keep in mind that if you get disabled while your is active, you won't be able to teleport to it! Always take that into account when using the skill to escape.

As for toplane:

Always have a , and harass alot. Everytime your passive is up try to get them with your Q. If they jump on you, just W, go back a bit, and Q them. It will be really hard for them to kill you, and they'll have a pretty hard time farming aswell if you keep up the constant harass.
Your auto attack range is also pretty neat, don't forget to throw in some of those when you have the chance aswell. If the enemy is ad, don't forget to rush .

Once again, don't forget you have great synergy with your jungler, so ask for some ganks. Again, don't forget top is really a snowballing lane, so get a bit of advantage on the enemy, and enjoy the roll!

Mid game-Late game:
As most other champions, by this time try to walk with your team. Lissandra has really fantastic assets for teamfights, so abuse that. Try to help your support to keep objectives(baron/dragon) warded at all times. If you are fed, you can even engage fights if you see a good oportunity. Just E, W everyone you can and hit a Q. If they try to focus you hard just ulti yourself and wait for your team to clean up.

If you are behind or around same level as everyone else usualy you'll have a better engager(jungler/top sometimes even support.. yes, lookin at ya ). Then depending on the game do what you have to. If the enemy carry is very fed and your team focus is to clean him out, probably try to hit your W on him and maybe even your ulti. If your carry is strong, then try to protect him, you have an awesome kit for that.

Don't forget Lissandra has very good AoE, so in champion select try to ask for more champions that benefit form this.(,, , , , etc etc)

Teamfights.

So, what should you do with Lissandra in teamfights?

Well, your job is similar to any other regular ap-carry. Either kill or peel.
Generaly you will want to stay in the back lines, together with your ad carry and nearby your support. As the teamfight gets engaged, Q whoever gets in range, and keep kiting them.(Q, move back, Q, move back) The Q's shards will most likely hit some more of their teammembers, and the slow on the front line keeps them from getting them to you and your ad carry, who should be doing the same as you with his autos/skils. As soon as any enemy uses a gap closer or somehow gets close enough, use your W. This is where this skill really shines, it's usefulness in a teamfight is amazing. Well, in this scenario, you now have two choice:
-Go relentlessly on a rampage to kill the enemy carries, or keep protecting your ad carry. If you decide to go rampage, hit your E thru the enemy, and teleport to it getting behind the enemy team, this will probably get you close the their carries. Use everything you've got on them, including your ultimate. I find that most of the times it's more useful to ulti their ad carry keeping them stunned than to ulti yourself. Also doing this gets the slow more inside their team, making it dificult for them to react.
-You can also use your ultimate to protect your carry. This may seem bad, but I've won alot of teamfights thanks to this. You hav eto keep in mind (I'm talking about when games are around or over 30 minutes mark) the ad carry is(or atleast should) be the character doing the most damage. If your ultimate on a bruiser that would otherwise kill him, manages to save him and lets him keep shooting away, you will most likely win the teamfight.

Keep in mind this is all very hipotetical. But usualy if the enemy has a carry that is very fed and I think I see an opening, I go choice A(all in on him, and use ulti on him to keep him from making damage and make it easier for my team to clean him). If our team has the fed carry, I'll go option B and just try to keep him from dying at all costs.

Don't forget your is on a low cooldown, keep shooting them away at all times, trying to get as many enemies as possible.

Final Comments

This is it. I'll be updating this with anything I'll discover. Please help me with feedback. = )

Also I'm sorry if sometimes what I wrote is confusing, it's kinda late when I wrote this and english is not my native language, but I think and hope it's understadable most of the times.

So I hope you enjoy this build, and that my guide helped with anything in your gameplay with Lissandra. She's a very unique and fun champion, so go ahead and destroy!! = )

Valyon, thanks first of all.

I kinda see your point there. The thing is, I tought, because of her low scales(only +-60% whereas other ap carrys usualy have 70%+), I'd rather build her tankier. But I was thinking when reading what you said, going for more damage and rely on kiting and zhonias/ult to survive might be good idea. I will try it out, I imagine that with Twin Shadow, Lich Bane and Mov speed runes she'd be moving quite fast.

Maybe it'll be good when you get a bit ahead, I'll make sure to try it out and give a better opinion. = )

May 4, 2013 - 04:17 PM #2

I was actually going to build a guide based around Lich Bane and Move. Quints for Lissandra because I believe that as being super-mobile (boots of swiftness, etc.) can be quite fearsome for roaming/post-laning phase.

I only mention this because you have a part about Lich Bane. If people want to do that, my suggestion is that they'll have to play extra careful, because she becomes much squishier. However, the chase ability is second-to-none and she will literally keep the other lanes frozen with fear (pun intended). My suggestion for those wanting to go this route would be a build like this: Boots of Swiftness, Lich Bane, Morellonomicon, Liandry's Torment, Abyssal Scepter, Zhonya's Hourglass. Yes, you won't have tons of AP, but your Magic Pen. makes up for it and you usually initiate into a crowd/chase with W/R and/or Zhonya's. Only use when the other team is more mobile than you, though.

Other than that, I'm loving this guide man. Will provide more appropriate feedback as you update.

May 4, 2013 - 01:28 PM #3

Thanks alot guys.

I will update further into the teamfights, just been with kinda tight schedule ever since I wrote this. But probably tomorrow I'll have some freetime to go into more detail. Stay tuned! Any tips you can give me about your games aswell would be apreciated.

I also plan on doing a matchups chapter, but I'll take awhile to know how she works vs all matchups as I usualy only play ranked or customs, but I'll do it asap.

May 3, 2013 - 11:54 PM #4

Amazing guide! Carry my team every time!

May 3, 2013 - 07:38 AM #5

if u have some mana regen problems you can also put some manaregen runes (2/3 in seals, 2/3 in glyphs). Otherwise good guide but I'd like you to explain something more about teamfights

May 2, 2013 - 03:40 PM #6

Thanks alot Karlhead.

I wish more people give me some feedback instead of only voting. This is one of my first guides, and this becomes even more needed as we're talking about the newest champion in the league. Please give me your toughts, so we can all strive to turn this Lissandra into the full beast she can be. = )
