Champion Matchups

Introduction

Hi guys. I'm known as Angel Ark on the NA server, and I'm currently sitting in Gold 4, maining primarily top, mid, and AD. Even though my elo isn't impressive, ever since Sejuani got reworked, especially with most of her skillset tweaked, I tried solotop sejuani.

Who am I?

My first game was 11/4/11 against a renekton.
Immediately, I came up with three conclusions:
1. he sucked, I got fluky.
2. i knew renekton enough (i main renekton, check out my other guide)
3. Sejuani works top.
I assumed it was mostly 2, but 3 as well. So, I decided to yolo, and go for it, and this is what happened.
that was my first 6 games as sejuani post-rework, and I came up with the pros and cons.

Pros:
  • High armor
  • Tanky
  • Good in teamfights
  • Farms well
  • You ride a boar
  • Slows all day long
  • BACON.

Cons:
  • A little mana hungry until you get
  • Doesn't really do well against AP
  • Can get kited
  • Can get harassed badly by ranged in top lane
  • Not that strong vs APs.

Stats with her as of 8/13/2013

Change Log

8/13/2013
  • Math crunch:
Pre 3.8 Patch, Sejuani's base health= 535. Cloth armor gave her +15 armor, and her W dealt 85.6 per sec with just her 535 health.

Post 3.8 Patch, her W scaling got nerfed to 10%, and the new Doran's Shield came out. Doran's shield 100 hp+10 hp regen+passive. Her base health= 535+100 = 635, and so her W dealt 63.5 per sec with her 635 health.

Patch conclusion:
Due to the decrease from 16%-10% of her max hp, Sejuani's W lost 22.1 damage minus the base damage. However, Doran's Shield offers more sustain with the Unique: Blocks 8 damage from champion basic attacks as well as Health Regen.

Overall, you lose 22.1 damage, so it's a nerf essentially, but her early game is still unchanged.

Patch 3.8
  • Northern Winds

Bonus maximum Health ratio reduced to 10% from 16%
Permafrost

Reduced slow duration to 1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 seconds from 2/2.25/2.5/2.75/3
Glacial Prison

Reduced stun and slow duration to 1.25/1.5/1.75 seconds from 1.5/1.75/2

  • Boar got nerfed, W damage decreased her early game trade a lot, but Doran's Shield also became a good starting item, will try it and see if it's viable.

Masteries

The tanky 9/21/0 is used so that you will survive harass and you can survive the bursts of AD Casters and bruisers you'll face top.
  • Note: The 3 points in Hardiness (Armor) should be traded for Resistance (Magic Resist) if you're against an AP.
  • I don't take the Summoner's Resolve because you won't use ignite in lane unless you want to kill them

Runes

Quints: Flat AP
Marks: Magic Pen
Seals: Flat Armor
Glyphs: Flat MR

Explanation:
  • For Quints, you can also get Movement Speed Quints if you're afraid you'll get kited, and that'll give you the advantage in some lanes against ranged champions, but most of the time, you'll want Flat AP Quints. The reason for that, is because you have Magic Pen runes, and without AP damage from your skills, it's not going to be penetrating anything (insert sexual comment here).

  • Marks. You want Magic Pen marks because you actually do a lot of ap damage, which is the reason why sejuani mid actually works. (i tried it. her passive doesn't help at all in mid lane, and you'll vulnerable to extreme kiting since they're almost all melee, so top is better for piggie.)

  • Seals. You'll be against ad casters/bruisers, and they deal tons of AD damage, and without flat armor seals, you will die and be slaughtered and cooked into bacon. do you want that? NO.

  • Glyphs. Normally, I would take Per level MR Glyphs, but because Sejuani does pretty badly against APs, going flat MR is safer.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:
  • Flash is almost essential. +can make huge plays, and ++lets you go so farrrrr, that it'll seem like you're as fast as an ulting .

  • Ignite is another neccessity, because as sejuani playing passive really sucks. She loves to push, loves to just dominate and zone the enemy top laner by getting an early lead. Ignite helps you win trades, get kills, snowball, kill carries. :)

Skills

Passive: Frost Armor

Explanation:
Damaging enemies with abilities or auto attacks give you armor, and Sejuani then gains tenacity for 2 seconds. This stacks up to 8 seconds. This passive helps Sejuani not get kited as much and is why top sejuani works in the first place. 10 bonus armor will help you a lot against ADs top.

Q: Arctic Assault

Explanation:
Honestly, I have a love-hate relationship with this skill. I love how it now knocks enemies up into the air, and deals damage+% of the enemy's max health. The bad thing is though, that you don't go through champions anymore, meaning if there's a champion between you and the wall, you can no longer dash through walls like that :(

W: Flail of the Northern Winds

Explanation:
Sejuani's next basic attack deals more damage to the target and enemies near it, then starts swinging her flail, dealing AoE damage to enemies nearby for 4 seconds. If you don't auto attack and reactivate w, Sejuani starts swining her flail. Tbh this ability didn't get changed much from pre-rework, but they made it a bit stronger I guess, and it's cooler now that she's actually spinning her flail.

E: Permafrost

Explanation:
Passive: Sejuani's attacks n abilities apply Frost for 4 seconds.
Active: All nearby enemies with Frost take magic damage and are slowed.

This can actually kill enemies that are running away, making it kind of funny, and it make it so that Sejuani can catch up to them. Pretty useful.

R: Glacial Prison

Explanation:
Sejuani throws her bola, and if it hits an enemy, it shatters, creating an AoE stun. If it reaches its maximum range without hitting anything, it explodes and slows enemies by 90% instead. I'm pretty sure that either the hitbox got smaller, or the range got shorter, but it doesn't feel as explosive anymore. However, it does explode now if you don't hit anything, and that's kind of cool since you can use it for an execution ultimate, although it's not recommended.

This skill is really really good for initiating, setting up easy combos for your team.

Skill Order

Explanation:

Obviously, you want to max R () whenever you can. Secondly, you'd want to max W (), because it's your main source of damage. Third, you max E (), because it increases the slow and damage per rank. Why max Q ()last? Because 1. the Max Health to Damage Ratio increases as you rank it, and its more effective late game than mid game because they'll have more and more health as the game goes on, so maxing it later would make more sense. 2. It deals less damage than e, and you want to slow them more.

Item Builds

Starting Items

Explanation:
  • New Doran's Shield is amazing with it's passive blocking auto attacks, good against range DPS people like and

health-potion5
Explanation:
  • In most lanes you'll be facing AD casters or bruisers top, like . Because most of them actually deal a lot of damage, even though we have our passive to mitigate some of that damage, it's important to have more armor, ensuring an easy lane.

crystalline-flaskhealth-potion3
Explanation:
  • You can go crystalline flask when you know you're against AP champs like , because cloth armor wont help you at all, as they deal almost all magical and next to no physical damage.

Core Items:

philosophers-stone
Explanation:
  • First of all, Philo stone grants GP10, and after 23 minutes and 20 seconds, it pays for itself, and you're gaining more gold for any time after.
  • Philo stone gives you all the health regen and mana regen that you need. This will help you not need crystalline flask if you went cloth armor, as you have good mana regen, and good health regen.

haunting-guise
Explanation:
  • This is a MUST.
  • Every stat in this item benefits Sejuani; the health from Ruby Crystal() gives you more damage for your w (), and the AP from Amplifying tome() and the Magic Pen helps you deal more damage for all your skills.

kindlegem
Explanation:
  • CDR and health really help Sejuani for her W(), and it makes Sejuani overall very tanky
  • Also builds into Locket of the Iron Solari () and Spirit Visage ()

Boots:

ninja-tabi
Explanation:
  • Get this if they have a lot of physical damage/auto attackers

mercurys-treads
Explanation:
  • Good against APs and CCs.

Late Game Items:

locket-of-the-iron-solari
Explanation:
  • Wonderful Mid Game Item
  • All stats benefit Sejuani - Health, CDR, Armor, Health Regen
  • Very good utility active - Shield for all allies near you

warmogs-armor
Explanation:
  • Helps your W () damage a lot.
  • Makes her the beefy tank that she's supposed to be.

liandrys-torment
Explanation:
  • Make all her damage DoT, which is very strong, and since the damage doubles when they are slowed/stunned/knockup/cced in general, it increases the damage a lot.
  • Health and Magic Pen helps her damage ans survivability as well.

frozen-fist
Explanation:
  • R.I.P. Iceborne Gauntlet. Honestly, I liked Iceborne more, but whatever.
  • Helps with your enhanced auto attack from W (), and procs the sheen().
  • Give you armor and MR and a bit of AP, all of these benefiting you

abyssal-scepter
Explanation:
  • AP and MR shredding helps you and your AP Carry deal more damage.
  • MR helps you deal with the enemy AP Carry.

spirit-visage
  • Increased healing->More health->More health regen
  • MR to deal with against AP top.
  • Health and CDR from Kindlegem() gives you more survivability

sunfire-cape
Explanation:
  • Freeze them, then burn them. The AoE damage from her W () combined wit the sunfire's passive is pretty sweet, although I would opt for Randuin's Omen () because of it's active.
  • Fire+Ice

randuins-omen
Explanation:
  • Lowers Attack Speed and Movement Speed, this item shuts down AD carries, it's very sweet.
  • Makes you real tanky.

athenes-unholy-grail
Explanation:
  • Works, since you consume a lot of mana, but I think there are better items than this.
  • The AP, Mana Regen, CDR, and Passive does all help Sejuani

lich-bane
Explanation:
  • It's like the AP Iceborne.
  • This is more of an luxury item than an actual strong effective item.
  • Fun lol.

shurelyas-reverie
  • Builds out of Philo stone ()
  • Movement Speed active allows your team to get speed steriods and a strong engagement.
  • More for utility, and most supports get this, so you don't need to, unless you're a Usain Bolt fan.

Early Game

Levels 1-5
I trade with most champions level 1, because I know my continuous damage from W () deals a lot, and I'm not afraid to start zoning them from farm already.
Level 2 onwards, I'll play more passive, but sometimes I'll just charge in and deal some damage.

At 6, this should be your combo - R->Q->W->E->Ignite. Throw out your glacial prison, then arctic assault in, and kill them. :)

Mid Game

By this time, you should have your locket/spirit visage/liandrys. You are now the frontline tank of your team, and you should be having dragon fights. Shove your lane out, and walk down. Either pressure mid tower, or take drag. or do both. Talk with your team, and call some plays.

Late Game

You are now a tanky AP beef. You guys should group and start to push lanes. Don't stray too far from your team, and try to create fights or split push. Sejuani is actually a decent split pusher, as her Northern winds allow her to clear waves really easily.

Team Fights

Throw your ult, dash in, start dealing damage to everyone. mark their whole team with Northern winds, and when their enemy assassin or bruiser goes for your ADC, permafrost them to help your ADC peel, or permafrost the enemy ADC so your carries can kill them.

Final Comments

Thanks for reading my guide on Piggie Top lane, and I hope you all have fun. :) I'm pretty sure I'm one of the if not first to innovate Sejuani top post-rework, and I hope I have helped you guys understand her mechanics and expand your game knowledge on her. This is probably my most in-depth guide, and i'll be updating the change log whenever I can. :)

Have fun out there, RIDE THE BOAR TO THE TOP.
