Champion Matchups

Introduction

This guide will teach you how to play Jayce from my point of view. Jayce is pretty much in the same class as Khazix except Jayce follows more of the squishy ad carry role, with longer range poke and some incredible CC/utility. A fed blue buff Jayce alone early mid game with brutalizer can 1v5 a team if they don't have enough armor to survive his poke. It's very game breaking and abusable. Even if he falls behind he still has some form of poke and wave clear, although he will get destroyed by high armor targets like Malphite. Jayce is a very viable champion in today's meta with very few weaknesses.

Masteries

Basically the same masteries as I would use with Khazix except without the attack speed. Your W maxes your attack speed so there's no point of putting any points into it. From this you will just put it into the last hit mastery which is the only thing you can put it into and the most useful masteries you can use with the remaining points.

Runes

Go 15 ad if you're going for the first blood, but generally these runes are the best. It offers you AD to last hit and armor pen for scaling your ad into the early to late game.

You can swap blues out if they have 0 AP for CDR.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:

Ignite finish offs your opponents and also gives you 5 ad / 5 ap. which is useful in trading.


Flash: Universal OP spell. Use to last hit for a kill or to escape.

Skills

Passive: Hextech Capacitor

Explanation:


When harassing with melee form, you usually want to save the passive for the auto combo into E.

When in melee form and preparing to peel out of melee form, you will reduce mr/armor from the first auto which goes well with your skill set and item builds.


Q: To the Skies! / Shock Blast

Explanation:

Gap closer/slow.

Long range poke. (this poke makes jayce a ridiculous poking machine that destroys squishies)



W: Lightning Field / Hyper Charge

Explanation:

his W in melee form doesn't do much but it's just extra mana to burn off.
his W in ranged form makes him a scary peeler with the correct items and cdr. it's also an auto attack canceler


E: Thundering Blow / Acceleration Gate

Explanation:


both of his E's give utility and some kind of movement. except 1 is individual against enemies and the other is for your team. you can also use it for your ridiculous poke e->q combo. or in melee form Q->auto->E combo


R: Transform: Mercury Cannon / Transform: Mercury Hammer

Explanation:


changes up the stances and procs a special effect to the first auto attack.


Item Builds

Basically the same concept as Kha'zix in this item build except you can rush Muramasa


Starting:

Core Goals:
tear-of-the-goddess+dorans-blade great for adding extra sustain and preparing core item

Follow up core:
the-brutalizerthe-bloodthirster (go last whisper if enemy is stacking armor)
the-brutalizerhexdrinker good vs ap/ triple ap. shield saves you 5ever
best anti armor item for ad dmg.

Boot Options:
mercurys-treads good vs ap/cc
ninja-tabi good vs ad
ionian-boots-of-lucidity great when there is no threat of being killed when poking. Increases poke efficiency by reducing the cd by 15%
boots-of-mobility great for roaming if you beat your lane very badly. lane ganks/ fog of war ganks/ following up/farming

Good Items to buy:
dorans-blade same concept as dorans shield except even better vs ap's.
Sometimes provides the extra sustain you need against certain laners such as yorick.


Late Game Goals:
last-whisper anti armor, usually bought every game.
warmogs-armor if GA is not in reach and HP seems to be more effective, go for warmogs. You can never go wrong with HP once you have the damage if you sit on giants belt.
muramana ridiculous with the Q, hits really hard.
spirit-of-the-elder-lizard Solid poke item, clears waves, true damage, regen on hp and mana.
the-black-cleaver shred is usually good if they have lower amounts of armor or if you have other ad's on your team.
randuins-omen wardens mail is the god anti ad item for it's value. HP + slow great combo vs tons of AD.
guardian-angel can't go wrong with a GA if you can afford it after damage.
blade-of-the-ruined-king Not recommended but you can make it work since it gives you a lot of useful tools like hp gain, movement speed, survivability.

Team Fights

Stay in ranged form 90% of the fight. IF you go into melee form you'll be kited or you're being baited into a kill or you're getting a kill.

Go as close as possible in range of your long range poke to poke the enemies and make use of your full muramasa mana.

If you start the fight off in melee form and you get jumped on, immediately E the target away if in danger.

Peel for your AD super late game, your late game W is ridiculous when it comes to damage output when you have the necessary items. You can even do more damage then your ad carry if you're fed or really farmed.

You should be one of the last ones to die in a fight unless the enemy uses all 5 ults on you and you get caught out or misplay.

Conclusion

Jayce is really annoying to deal with top lane because of his range and capabilities.

his Q provides excellent poke at lvl 4/5 with tear brutalizer early mid game.

W scales extremely well and can make jayce into an ad carry that peels with massive damage procing muramasa.

has a knockback magic % dmg spell + a team speed boost which also makes your poke work for the speed up to go.

synergies with pretty much every champion in the game due to his utility.

AOE wave clear

High ganking potential

Fair amount of CC

Can potentially 1v5 with poke.

In the end Jayce can be picked top/mid/ad. He is a very strong champion that can single handedly win the game if extremely fed. Dealing damage without even being close to the enemy which can create opportunities for objectives such as baron, dragon, or buffs.

I like the guild, I play Jayce a bit differently myself, but as you said everyone has their own styles with him. I have no doubt you are far better (even if just due to much more experience) with him. Personally, I like to focus on the Black Clever first (or as you said brutalizer, top other item, then BC), Manamune can be a great choice due to his high cost. I have been toying with the idea of using some attack speed especially when in a marksman role (going for Black Cleaver first for quick armor shredding). How to do this I'm still debating, currently I'm using the boots (attack speed version) and a Wit's End along with other on hit effect based items such as Frozen Mallet. This set up is based mostly around his w due to the three rapid auto attacks applying all these effects (such as Black Cleaver and Wit's End to cut both MR and Armor in team fights or fights against both adc and support or juggler and anything). Of course you would only want Wit's End if you have high AP based team. Let me know what you think and give me advise on how I can improve this strategy if you think it is usable. I also like the high attack speed because it allows me to get mana back really fast in the Melee Stance.

A little tip for you Dyrus. The ult helps to max his tear even though it costs 0 mana, and has virtually no cd. Spamming it helps to get to 700 stacls faster than Singed afking at fountain with q on.

@BoshyTime Iceborn isn't a great item for Jayce, but could potentially be picked if you REALLY need it for kite.

@Boneshanks also if Dyrus has taught us something its that 1 point in masteries isn't really a GAME-BREAKER so basically he stimulates you guys to basically decide how to spend your not-so-important points around the mastery tree. If you don't want to hp regen then take 1 more armor/mr... it's not gonna make a difference anyway.
