Champion Matchups

Introduction

The purpose of making this guide is to help those who like to play Draven, but want a little bit of freedom or that extra boost in early game to catch their axes, or to help burst down the damage nobody else can. When playing draven early game the most important thing is keeping your q active! If you are not juggling your axes, you need to. If you can, try to juggle 2 at the same time. If timed right, you should be able to stand close to the minions, throw both your axes, catch one, throw it again, catch the other one and repeat without stopping. This is difficult at times but worth the practice when you get this down. Try not to stand in one spot with your axes as this will result in the other ADC noticing the axe drops and shooting you. (they do this anyway but it's harder if you are constantly moving)

Pros:
  • Great 1v1 dueler and strong early game
  • High damage all game (along with critical strike)
  • His ult is global (great for stealing baron, dragon if timed right)
  • If you are caught out of position he will chunk your health down.

Cons:
  • No escape late game.
  • Hard to use on purple side
  • You need to know how to play him. (practice in custom games or against baby bots)
  • Might take some people long time to learn the ropes.

Masteries

My masteries are standard to most of those already out. A 21-9-0 lets you take the extra movement speed after a critical strike (helps when catching your axes) and some extra critical strike without putting them in your runes. On the defensive 9 masteries the extra health makes you last just that much longer when fighting. As well as the armor.

Runes

The runes I use are also a standard ADC rune setup. The armor and magic resist gives you some sustain against their support/adc and lets you farm without having to worry to much about being bursted down before level 6. The attack runes grant you that extra damage to kill the minions a little earlier. The problem with this is if you take the minions out to early, you push your lane. If you can, freeze your lane or let the other team push. This lets you play a little more passively and grants your jungler access to gank you if your in need of it.

Summoner Spells

Explanation:

Flash guarantees a small escape late game. Considering your only escape is flash, your slow, and your 1.5 seconds of speed boost. You need flash. GHOST is the worste possible summoner to put on Draven. Ignite as always secures the kill if you cant. For instance, if you turret dive and have to pull out, but they are less than 150 health and you cant hit them. Ignite, for the kill, then flash away so you don't get killed by the support.

Skills

Passive: Wicked Blades

Explanation:Draven's wicked blades makes his early game really strong with an extra 30 damage every auto attack when he has spinning axes active and it also stacks per hit.

Q: Spinning Axe

Explanation:This skill is what Draven is known for. If you do not have 1-2 axes at all the times, you are not playing Draven correctly. This is Draven's bread and build skill and is a very huge damage steroid as it also processes your passive wicked blades and resets your Blood rush. You must be able to catch axes at a decent level otherwise this is not the champion for you. You can practice in custom games to get better at it if you still want to play Draven.

W: Blood Rush

Explanation:Resets everytime you catch an axe just a nice att speed and move speed steroid to have, sometimes you can add this at level 2 and just harass it's safer to take than stand aside

E: Stand Aside

Explanation:This skill could be used for a cheese at level 2 you should try to learn this trick if you guys haven't already when you kill a creep and level up to 2 instantly add your stand aside (Ctrl+E) and use it on them with 2 axes you may be able to pick up the kill. (make sure you practice this though as you can also get killed if you play this move wrong)

R: Whirling Death

Explanation:Nothing much to say about his ulti just a global and high damage ulti
if you are skilled enough you can pull it back early before it hits and get the full damage on a running target,

Item Builds

Start:
  • The only time you want to buy a for a starting item is if you want to go all in against the enemy adc. This means you have to harass every chance you get and farm while doing so. If this does not suite you I would suggest going the alternate route and the safer route of + ] This ensures that you can farm without taking to much damage and you don't HAVE to harass but it is still highly recommended!

First Back:
  • When you come back for your I mentioned . The reason for this being when you are attacking with your spinning axes you don't always want to activate your w to go catch it. gives you that extra boost you need to get to your axe quicker, and sometimes even let you escape sticky situations if you know how to kite.
  • Also you want to pick up your to help you sustain in the lane. That small life steal does help when you are trying to gain cs and are constantly being harassed.

Mid game goals
  • At this time you are very vulnerable and can die the easiest at this point in time. gets you that extra life steal if you are still in laning phase. This should be your primary goal if you are ahead in the game and cs. This will grant you enough damage to potentially kill the adc earlier than normal. Grants you that life steal so you can muscle your way into the fight without taking full damage.
  • When you build your you can activate this + your and speed your way into a fight if you need to. This also helps if your jungler wants a quick dragon and you don't have much time.
  • If you are still ahead in kills and cs go ahead and build your this will give you a small speed boost permanately and grant you extra attack speed. Although this does make catching your axes a little trickier to some. If you play right, you can have a constant 2 axes going and you will murder your lane from here on out.

Alternate route:
  • IF you are hurting in cs and are falling behind even just a little. Build your first! This will give you the sustain you need to build up your cs and continue to farm throughout the game without having to worry to much about getting ganked. You can play this right and get a couple of kills just from this.
  • After you get your you want to build your This gives you the crit chance you need for your q to take chunks out of the enemy health. Although if they are building armor it wont hit AS hard but you can still do hefty damage with this.
  • After those two items you should be pretty well off in the game. To garuentee your spot in late game and to keep you from loosing you now need some attack speed. Build You can use this to get your attack speed up and decimate your foes with your axes.

If Your Team Does Not Have A Tank/I'm To Squishy:
  • If you think you are to squishy or you want to tank a little bit more damage then a normal adc to help you sustain late game you can go with the items as follows. + + + + + OR

The frozen mallet is if you need health and a slow for those pesky mid laners or top laners who poke and get out before you can do to much damage. Or if you just want to slow down one of their players while they are running to secure the kill. (not always the case) If you just need health then go for the warmogs.

Early Game

Early game you should decimate with Draven. is counted as a counter towards Draven but I have yet to have a game where a has shut me down. The best support to have is ! The reason for this being has blood boil and can grant you that extra attack speed/move speed. He also has the slow and his ulti that can chunk off the enemy's health and let you finish them off. ALWAYS harass when playing . If you are not harassing you are giving the enemy adc a chance to get cs and a chance to harass you back and then in turn you trade off damage. If they know how to play you can loose the trade very easily if you don't catch your axes.

Mid Game

Mid game is not really Draven's strongest point. Here he is between builds and just cannot shoot out enough damage if the enemy has built up enough armor. Also if they concentrate you in a battle, your escape means are very small. The best thing to do in mid game is to farm up past 200+ cs. After this you should be set and also have between 3-5 kills if played properly with nunu. After this you own the game as draven. Just stand back and let your team tank for you.

Late Game

During late game Draven is practically unstoppable. Unless the enemy team kills you before you can chunk out some damage, your set for the game. Don't get caught, and don't go alone ANYWHERE. Late game it is hardly ever that someone travels alone. So why would you?

Team Fights

In team fighting many people think go for the adc because they do the most damage. In most cases this is correct. But when playing Draven. Chances are, you shut down their adc and concentrating them only gets you a kill, and the enemy team an ace. When playing Draven you want your team to build tanky because you are going to be taking chunks out of the enemy health. When your team is tanking. They need to create a distraction so you can come in and kill the DAMAGE. By this I mean go for the player that is dealing the most damage. Don't go for the ADC just because everyone else is. If everyone is going for the adc and they don't do damage. You need to make up for this and take out the enemy player doing damage and redirect your team next team fight.

Final Comments

Draven is not the easiest champion to play on Lol. Though he is not the hardest either. When playing Draven always have 1 axe going. If you don't. your playing wrong and you need to practice some more. Cant juggle the axes? Go to practice mode! Your axe juggling skills need to be top priority before you attempt to go kill anyone. The critical strike cripples the enemy team. Get your juggle down, stay back, and catch ALL your axes if possible. Also, watch out for traps when catching your axes. If you know something bad is about to go down when you catch your next axe let it drop. Pick up your q again and start over. It's worth dropping your axe then getting half your health dropped trying to catch one.
