Champion Matchups

Introduction

Blitzcrank has gone from one of the best support to a situational pick in competitive play. His reliance on catching players off-guard still makes him a strong pick in solo queue, but there are counters to him at the highest level of play.

Champion Overview

Strengths
+Tanky with mana shield
+Long range, non-Cleansible grab
+Decent burst at level 6
+Does very well against Cleanses
+Decent mobility with a few ranks into W

Weaknesses
-Hook is very skill reliant against experienced players
-Melee, making it difficult to assist AD to last at tower
-Easily harassable when hook is down
-Easy to gank early on, especially if mana shield is down

Masteries

1/13/16

Blitzcrank needs the extra tankiness to win all-ins and the extra points in utility help him transition well into the mid game with additional gold.

Runes

Marks:
Armor
Armor is the best option when playing against a lane that may focus you (support) and try to burst you down.

Attack Damage
AD is the best option when playing against a weak lane and you want the additional damage to burst down a target.

Seals:
Armor
Armor is pretty much always the best option for seals.


Glyphs:
Magic Resist (Flat/Scaling)
MR is needed against any team that has a decent amount of magic damage. Take flat ones if the opposing lane has magic damage and scaling if they don't.


Quints:
Gold per 10
GP 10 help you scale better into mid/late game.

Health
Against a lane that wants to kill you, extra early HP is nice.

Summoner Spells



Explanation:
Exhaust is good in all situations.



Explanation:
Ignite is a viable option, especially against AD carries with Cleanse or if you simply want to burst a target down.

Skills

Passive: Mana Barrier

Explanation:
Mana Shield makes Blitzcrank surprisingly tanky and it can be very difficult to burst down a Blitzcrank by catching him unaware, as a full MP Blitzcrank has even more health.




Q: Rocket Grab

Explanation:
Rocket Grab is Blitzcrank's signature ability. Being able to pull an enemy target into your team is scary even for tanks, provided your team has some CC to lock the victim down.




W: Overdrive

Explanation:
Overdrive is excellent for moving into an advantageous position and is useful for running around the map. Early on, Overdrive does cost a ton of mana, making it not worth using in lane.




E: Power Fist

Explanation:
Power Fist allows whatever victim that is grabbed to suffer for even longer by Blitzcrank knocking the poor fellow into the air.




R: Static Field

Explanation:
Static Field helps compliment Blizcrank's kit by giving him much needed burst damage to finish off targets.

Skill Order

Maxing first:
Rocket Grab is the best skill to max first as the extra damage and lower cooldown will help Blitz get more chances to pull.

Maxing or :
Often when roaming around the map, I will put extra points into W, but if I am still laning or there are imminent teamfights, maxing E for the lower cooldown will be preferable.

Item Builds

Start: ( + )

Start Rejuvenation Bead for an early Philo Stone or save for a later Aegis of the Legion or Locket of the Iron Solari.

Starting with all consumables a strong level 1 start, allowing you to play more aggressive by bolstering your team's vision and denying the enemies'.

Rush: / +

Grab any of these items early. Sightstone is a must, while Philo Stone is option. A Doran's Shield is also a great option if bot lane is constantly trading as the passive and additional tankiness is extremely strong.

Boots: / +

Ninja Tabi is excellent for tankiness and is a cheap upgrade for additional movement speed. Boots of Mobility gives Blitzcrank the movement speed needed to to catch targets.

For enchantments, you'll most likely go with Captain or Distortion. Distortion is excellent if you want to be the one initiating, as you need to lower cooldown on Flash, and Captain is nice for additional maneuverability.

Important: + /

Sightstone and Ruby Sightstone are extremely valuable items. Both these items allows you to forget about buying wards, saving a ton of gold. Getting these items as early as possible will give you the greatest return on the investment, plus the HP is awesome.

Aegis of the Legion is needed on every team. The defensive stats granted are extremely gold efficient, but if someone else on the team has it, then just get a Locket of the Iron Solari.

Locket of the Iron Solari has everything you need as a support. HP, CDR, Armor AND an active shield, Locket is a solid item for any match-up.


Utility: //////

Warden's Mail's passive allows Blitzcrank to lower the attack speed of AD carries that choose to attack him. The upgrade into Frozen Heart or Randuin's Omen are great options too.


Frozen Heart gives Blitzcrank tankiness, CDR and additional mana. All of these stats help Blitzcrank stay in the fight for longer periods of time to allow for multiple usages of his spells.


Shurelya's Reverie gives Blitzcrank a strong initiation tool that is upgraded from a Philo Stone, but gives relatively low tankiness for the amount of gold.


Zeke's Herald is a strong aura item, but is rather expensive. Zeke's is still awesome when the team consists of multiple AD champions, but it is definitely difficult to rush. I would aim for this item third or fourth after some of the other items.


Runic Bulwark is the upgrade for , but is really only useful when going against a lot of magic damage. The upgrade is extremely costly, so make sure that the extra MR will be useful before purchasing it, simply having an Aegis is sufficient in many cases.

Randuin's Omen is also an option, as the additional HP and passive helps Blitzcrank survive longer in a fight.

Mikael's Crucible gives Blitzcrank a ton of extra mana regen, and builds out of Philo Stone. This item doesn't provide much tankiness, but the active is quite useful for actual teamfighting.

Laning

When laning, the goal is to try to build an advantage at level 1, you can accomplish this by trying for an invade (if your level 1 team is stronger), taking mini golems if you are on blue side or taking wolves if you are on purple (after asking the jungler nicely, of course). Blitzcrank's main weakness is being pushed in early as he can not assist the AD to last hit under tower for fear of taking too much poke damage. However, if they are pushed up to your tower, there are opportunities for Blitzcrank to land a Rocket Grab.

Teamfights

Before a teamfight starts, the goal is to try and catch a target with Rocket Grab and quickly burst him down. However, if your tea gets engaged on before this happens, try to grab an enemy squishy target to the front of the fight and combo him, or help your team's squishies by Ccing them with your abilities.

Final Comments

Blitzcrank is a strong support in the right hands. His weak early laning phase can be mitigated with brilliant Rocket Grabs and/or correct usage of jungler ganks. Despite the many nerfs to the godhand, Blitzcrank still is able to make plays for his team.

can you upload a video of how to play him as you did with allistar for example, i love playing with blitz and i really like the way you play and learning from the best na support will help me a lot, thank you in advantage
